SAN JOSE, Calif. (Sept. 24, 2009)–Premier Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promoter STRIKEFORCE and SHOWTIME Sports, have teamed up with the American Forces Network to deliver live MMA events to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces serving overseas via AFN, the worldwide television broadcast network. The deal calls for all STRIKEFORCE events for the remainder of 2009 to be distributed on AFN including the Nov. 7 M-1 Global co-promotion of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers, airing live on CBS Television Network.
The debut offering—this Friday’s Strikeforce Challengers event on SHOWTIME—features American military hero Tim Kennedy, the 29-year-old Special Forces soldier who has served tours of duty in Middle East, versus undefeated middleweight Zak Cummings in the main event from Tulsa, Okla.
“We are proud to be able to bring live Strikeforce events to the men and women of The United States Armed Forces,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said. “These are people that have dedicated their lives to protecting our country so it’s great to be able to give something back to them. And the timing couldn’t be better. Having Army Ranger Tim Kennedy headline a terrific Challengers event is the perfect start.”

The U.S. Department of Defense operates the American Forces Network which is carried on bases in 175 countries and aboard 140 U.S. Navy ships at sea around the world reaching nearly one million American service men and women.
“We are delighted to add Strikeforce mixed martial arts programs to our AFN schedule,” said Corey Slutsky, Sports Director at the American Forces Network. “We provide a touch of home to U.S. military service members and their families deployed around the world and we salute the Strikeforce team for their support of the troops.”
An elated Kennedy said: “This is freaking fantastic news. Right now, the Special Forces group that I recently left are deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Every single friend of mine is over there and I was planning on emailing every one of them the results of my fight right after it finished on Friday, but instead they get to watch it. I’ll be emailing everyone tonight and telling them and letting them know.”
Kennedy spoke to the popularity of MMA amongst his fellow soldiers, “It attracts the same kind of people: Intense, excited, aggressive, athletic type people. Also, the skills that guys use in MMA are skills that guys use to stay alive in combat. Boxing, wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, that’s stuff that soldiers use to survive. Some of the Special Forces guys train in that stuff everyday. And for them to get to watch some of the guys that are the best in the world at it is exciting.”
Kennedy, (10-2) recently accepted an offer to serve in the Texas National Guard after spending six years in The United States Army, the last three as a sniper in the Seventh Special Forces Group.
He feels no pressure whatsoever being the main event Friday. “If I’m not getting blown up or getting shot at then it only means it’s going to be fun for me,” he said. “This is not life threatening. This is me going out and doing something that I enjoy and I enjoy fighting.”
In his last start, on June 19 at ShoWare Center in Kent, Wash., on Strikeforce Challengers, Kennedy dominated Nick “The Goat” Thompson, stopping him on the ground with an onslaught of punches in the second round (2:37).
“After 9/11 happened, I wanted to do something for my country,” he explained. Kennedy’s new job will allow him to remain in the armed services while maintaining enough flexibility to take his MMA career to the next level.
“The military is my life,” said Kennedy. “I am going to serve as long as they’ll let me. I’d love to retire in uniform.”

FightZone TV To Air Action Fight League MMA Event “Rumble at the Rock”

Mixed Martial Arts history is about to explode in South Florida and FightZone TV’s Jay Adams will be their to call all of the action for a future broadcast as some of the nations top teams send their best champions to Rumble at the Rock on Friday, September 25 at 8 PM at Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL.
Fights will feature Miami native Keith Johnson vs. Michael Bernhard, Ariel Gandulla of Bradenten, Fl. takes on Danny Babcock from Palm Bay, Fl. and Bounmy Somchay of West Palm Beach will square off against Rene Martinez of Miami.

Sheika wins slugfest against Kruger; McLean upsets Saleem in shocker; O’Connor, Gingras and Sujak all winners

MANCHESTER , N.H. (Septe.ber 23, 2009) – Three-time world title challenger Omar Sheika won an entertaining slugfest tonight against a game Theo Kruger in the main event on the 8th annual “Fight To Educate” card at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire.
The 8th annual “Fight To Educate,” presented by MB Tractor & Equipment, in association with Cedric Kushner’s Gotham Boxing, benefitted the SEE Science Center, Bobby Stephen Fund for Education, and The Veterans Count Club.
Sheika (28-9, 19 KOs) wore-down Kruger (9-9-2, 3 KOs) and took a knee in the seventh round after Sheika unloaded a barrage of punches. The onslaught continued in the eighth as Kruger was decked again. He beat the 10-count on shaky legs, but the fight was wisely halted by the referee at that point.
In the co-feature, light welterweight Danny O’Connor (9-0, 3 KOs), 2008 U.S. Olympic Team alternate, kept rolling along with another impressive boxing performance. The slick southpaw stopped Patrick “The Raging Bill” Cape (6-8, 3 KOs) in the third round with a perfectly placed left uppercut to the body.
New Hampshire favorite Richard Gingas (10-2, 6 KOs), star of The Contender IV, a game Robert Davis (5-19-3) in an action-packed light heavyweight bout that ended when Davis was unable to continue after seven rounds.
New York heavyweight Shawn McLean (4-4, 3 KOs) upset previously undefeated Faruq Saleem (38-1, 32 KOs) by way of a fourth-round technical knockout.
New York super middleweight Hajro Sujak (4-0, 2 KOs) kept his unbeaten record intact, flooring Joel Lopez (0-4) twice with left hooks en route to a first-round TKO.

LAS VEGAS (SEPTEMBER 23, 2009)—Undefeated and world ranked Cruiserweight contender, BJ Flores wants a title opportunity and he wants it now as he has pinpointed WBC champ Giacobbe Fragomeni and potential WBO champ Marco Huck as the men whose belts Flores wants to take.
Flores, 24-0-1 with fifteen knockouts has been on a roll since signing with promoter Square Ring.
Flores opened eyes with a stoppage victory over former world title challenger Epifanio Mendoza on August 15th as part of the big Roy Jones Jr. – Jeff Lacy card in Biloxi, Mississippi. That was Flores third victory in 2009.
The Las Vegas native is willing to face Huck or Fragomeni anywhere, anyplace anytime.
“Fragomeni does not have an opponent for his November fight.” said Flores
“I am more than willing to go to Italy. A top rated American is just what he needs after a close and controversial draw over a Krzysztof Wlodarczyk. I would be more than happy to be on a plane the next day to the Dec. 5th fight to watch the Huck v Afolabi fight and challenge the winner.
“Afolabi is a very good fighter and there is a good chance he can beat Huck, so I want to fight him as much as Huck.”
I’m cleaning out Europe. Fragomeni or Huck , whichever comes first. I also believe that It does not matter. I will love to challenge Fragomeni and show I am a top cruiserweight in the world. The rust is off and I’m ready to fight the champions and show the world I am a major player in the division. The talk is over. I want one of the champions”!
