LAS VEGAS, September 16 – The official weigh-in for the Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez fight will be more entertaining than anticipated with addition of the undisputed original king of comedy D.L. Hughley and the undisputed Latino king of the airwaves Eddie “Piolin” Sotelo as co-hosts the grand event on Friday, September 18 at 2:30pm PT.

The six-time world champion in five weight divisions Mayweather and five-time world champion in three weight divisions Marquez will meet in the ring Saturday, September 19 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas live on HBO Pay-Per-View®.

Hughley and Piolin will join legendary ring announcer Michael Buffer for the official main event weight call, setting the stage for what will be the biggest collision of comedy and entertainment in boxing weigh-in history just a day before one of the most highly-anticipated boxing events of 2009 takes center stage in the sports world.

“I am looking forward to being a part of this mega-event and watching my main man ‘Money’ Mayweather weigh in and get ready to kick some butt Saturday night,” said Hughley. “He’s the man in the streets and I am glad I can be there for him too.”

The MGM Grand Garden Arena will open doors to the public at 1:00 p.m. PT. The pay-per-view undercard bouts will step on the scale beginning at 2:30 p.m. PT with Mayweather and Marquez taking to the stage at approximately 3:10 p.m. PT.

A standup comedy legend whose appearance on the “Original Kings of Comedy” launched him to superstardom, D.L. Hughley has since made his mark in television, radio, on CD and in the movies. Hughley Breaks The News” and he is back on the road and appearing at the Monte Carlo in Las Vegas from September 16 through 19.

Mendes vs. Farrar to headline inaugural show

Lemoore, Calif. – The Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino shocked the mixed martial arts community in Central California and throughout the state on Wednesday announcing that it had teamed with Ted Williams and Gladiator Challenge to develop a new promotion titled Tachi Palace Fights.

Tachi Palace Fights will debut on Thursday, October 8 at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino and feature a loaded 9-bout card that features an intriguing main event which pits Hanford, Calif. wrestling phenom Chad Mendes (4-0) against Yuma, Ariz.’s Chance Farrar (7-2).

Mendes is the young protégé of Sacramento, Calif.’s Urijah Faber, who once fought Farrar for the World Extreme Cagefighting Featherweight strap.

Also, on the card is an exciting welterweight bout which pits Las Vegas, Nev.’s War Machine (10-2) against the up-and-coming star from Santa Rosa, Calif. David Mitchell (7-0).

The card also features Bellator Fighting Championship featherweight champ Joe Soto (7-0) of Porterville, Calif.

“This will be one of the most exciting and action packed fight cards to ever hit the Valley,” Tachi Palace Fights matchmaker Richard Goodman said.

The Palace took several months to decide on a direction to head in for its future in MMA. The Palace is widely recognized as one of the premier properties in the country for MMA and was the birth place for two of the biggest and brightest regional MMA promotions.

“We worked very diligently to figure out what was the best direction for us to go in with mixed martial arts. Our Entertainment and Marketing Department and Tribal Management team put in hours and hours of hard work,” Palace Entertainment Coordinator Jeremy Luchau said.

“We received proposals and bids from all over the country and from some of the nation’s top regional promotions, but at the end of the day we still wanted to do our own show and brand the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino,” added Palace Interim Entertainment Manager Joey Perez.

Enter Ted Williams, who has been a mainstay in the MMA community on the West Coast for well over a decade.

Williams will help build the Tachi Palace Fights not only with his knowledge but also using his nearly 30 Gladiator Challenge shows over the next year as a launching pad into the Tachi Palace Fights.

Gladiator Challenge will virtually be a feeder program to the Tachi Palace Fights, which will utilize the California State Athletic Commission for its shows despite being on Tribal land.

“This is a great opportunity for us to brand the Tachi Palace and to put on some great fights. We are going to groom the next Rock Stars of the sport right here,” Williams said. “I’m honored to be part of the team here at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino and to be able to utilize Gladiator Challenge as a tool in building Tachi Palace Fights.”

Tachi Palace Fights will also feature action taking place within a cage and feature 5-minute rounds.
Tachi Palace Fights will close the 2009 season with a show on Thursday, December 3 and then have five shows in 2010.

The MMA Fight Tulsa Fans Have Been Longing For Is Here: Unbeatens Thomas Longacre And Travis Calanoc Ready To Settle Rivalry At STRIKEFORCE Challengers In Tulsa, OK On Friday, Sept. 25

NEW YORK (Sept. 16, 2009) – A mixed martial arts (MMA) fight that area fans have been clamoring for will finally transpire on Friday, Sept. 25, when promising, unbeaten local favorites Thomas Longacre and Travis “The Dark Knight’’ Calanoc clash in one of the top fights on the Strikeforce Challengers card at SpiritBank Event Center in Tulsa, Okla. (SHOWTIME, 11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

Longacre and Calanoc, both 4-0, are no strangers to each other. They may not be the best of friends, but the talented prospects have trained at the same gym and known each other for years.

Both have lived in or around Tulsa for the majority of their lives. The 31-year-old, 5-foot-8 Longacre was born and raised in Sapulsa, Okla., and went to Kellyville High School in Kellyville, Okla. The 28-year-old, 5-foot-8 Calanoc was born in Anaheim, Calif., but moved to Tulsa when he was an infant. He attended Union High in Tulsa and, later, Tulsa Community College.

“This is a huge fight for Tulsa and one that people have been talking about for a long time,’’ said Longacre, who currently resides in Tyler, Tex. “My fights sell out almost every time there and with all the fighters from the area that Strikeforce has put on this card, I can almost guarantee this one will too. Fans are going to come out big time for this.’’

Said Calanoc, whose wife also fights MMA: “Longacre and I have always known it was only a matter of time before we’d fight. We’ve trained some together and both work for LA Boxing. I work for the one in Tulsa. He works for the one in Sherman, Tex.

“Tulsa fans are in for a tremendous fight and a tremendous night. Tulsa fans continue to become more educated about MMA. Sure, they still love the all-out action but now they understand that MMA is more than just getting punched in the face. It’s still the most exciting, but it is only a facet of the sport.

“Longacre was already fighting Muay Thai fights before I turned pro, so I’ve actually watched him fight for real. His standup is very good. So is mine. This definitely has the makings of a stand-up war and is a great, natural fight for the city of Tulsa and SHOWTIME. It could be the fight of the night.’’

Longacre wrestled in grade school and junior high but played baseball and football in high school. He had an opportunity to play football at Haskell Indian Junior college, but “it was too far from home, plus I was a mama’s boy and wanted to stay close,’’ he said.

His foray into the martial arts started with karate. “I was doing OK in karate but one day an instructor said ‘why not do full contact?’ so I got into kick-boxing, which I did for seven-eight years. I had about 30 fights in Las Vegas, Texas, Germany and Oklahoma. I fought in Chuck Norris’ World Combat League. Then I got into MMA,’’ said Longacre, whose parents met at an MMA gym and are still active members.

Longacre made his pro debut in October 2008 and last fought on July 25, 2009. “I love MMA,” he said. “It doesn’t do as much damage to my body as kickboxing. I couldn’t walk for two weeks after some kickboxing fights. My shins, knees, everything hurt. But striking is my game in MMA and I’m doing the kicking. So I don’t have to worry about taking the same shots. I can fight the next day. Don’t get me wrong, MMA is tough, but it is easier on my body.’’

On his upcoming encounter with Calanoc, Longacre said, “There’s no doubt that Travis is well-rounded, but he doesn’t possess the skills in any one area I have to worry about. I don’t think he is better than me, or has an advantage where he can overwhelm me in any area.

“It is going to be great fighting again in Tulsa. I will have had more than seven hard weeks of preparation. It’s great this fight is televised, but I’ve fought in front of the TV cameras before. Travis has never fought on TV, much less SHOWTIME, and he is coming off a layoff.

“My engine will be in top gear. He’s going to be rusty. I think he should have taken a warm-up fight because he is in for a rude awakening. I’ve been in wars and had blood all over me. I’ve been tested multiple times. He’s never had a tough fight. His heart hasn’t been tested yet. But it will.

“I can’t wait to showcase my skills. Getting ready for the fight is the hardest part. The easy part is the fight itself. The one who worked the hardest will win, and no one works harder than me.’’

Longacre has been married four years. His wife, Holley, “wants to fight MMA,’’ he says, “but I won’t let her. She knows a lot, but this is my job.’’

Calanoc’s wife, Niccali, meantime, does fight MMA. “She started after meeting me,’’ Travis said. “Originally she wanted to box but her mother wouldn’t let her. But after we started dating, she started training and went from there. We have fought on same card before.

“With her doing a lot of the same things as I do, like going to the gym and dieting, it actually makes things a little easier for her to understand what’s going on with me. But watching her fight is very hard for me, more difficult than when I fight. We train together and have the same coaches.

“The Cyborgs made a name for themselves but we have no such aspirations. Our goal is to always try and win our next fight. In training, we try to beat the hell out of each other. It’s a different form of marriage counseling,’’ he added, jokingly.

Travis Calanoc, who turned pro in December 2004, will be making his first start since July 2008. The interruption in his career was due to military obligations.

“I put my MMA career on hold after 9-11 hit,’’ he said, “and enlisted in the Marines. After seeing what had happened, I wanted to give something back, get a piece of it. I volunteered three times to go to Iraq, but I think the only reason they didn’t send me was because I was an MMA instructor.

“So I went to Norway and Japan. I’ve done seven years and am currently stationed in a reserve unit in Broken Arrow, Okla.’’

Calanoc, whose four MMA starts took place in Oklahoma, was introduced to the sport at an early age. “I started with the traditional martial arts, taekwondo and jiu-jitsu,’’ he said. “My dad was a body builder.’’

This is a tough assignment for the comebacking Calanoc, but he’ll be prepared. “I am very excited about fighting on SHOWTIME. More people will see me than ever before. This is definitely the biggest fight of my career and I’m hoping to make a good show and give people what they want.

“I won’t be boring, that’s for sure. It is going to be a war. I prefer to stand and am very aggressive, but I feel I am well-rounded. I try and be as good as everything as I can be.

“I’m looking forward to fighting more consistently now that I have more time to train. Both my wife and I are going to give it our best the next five years and see where it takes us.’’

MANCHESTER, Conn. (September 17, 2009) – WBC Youth and USNBC champion Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard fights fellow unbeaten prospect Rafael “The Dominican Man” Lora for the vacant NABF featherweight title Saturday night in South Winsor, Connecticut.

Remillard (18-0, 10 KOs), fighting out of neighboring Manchester, faces Lora (11-0, 5 KOs), WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation title-holder, in the 10-round main event.

“I’m excited to be fighting in my first main event at home,” Remillard said. “It gives some of my family, friends and fans a chance to see me fight live, something they may not have had a chance to do so far. I’ll have a lot of supporters there. The fight is being held only five minutes from my home. It’s a great chance to build my fan base. I feel that the show will be a sellout. It’s going to be a classy show at a small venue that will bring some new fans.

“I’m more comfortable fighting at home. I get to sleep in my own bed and train in my hometown. There’s pressure fighting at home, of course, but pressure brings out my best. I believe this fight is going to bring me to the next level. I believe, in boxing, if you can’t perform well under pressure, you’re in the wrong sport. I’m 18-0 and want to move up. I have to win and look good. I don’t have a choice. I can’t just get by and that’s the way I’ve looked at it through this entire training camp.”

Remillard has faced much tougher opponents than Lora, who has fought only as a pro once outside of his native Dominican Republic. “I know that he hasn’t fought opponents up to the stature of mine,” Matt explained, “but he’s still undefeated. He’s definitely a banger who, I’ve heard, is awkward with fast hands. Hey, he brings a lot to the table. We’re two undefeated featherweights fighting for the NABF title. An impressive win will help move me up in the rankings and open up bigger, televised fights for me.”

After overcoming a hand injury that sidelined him for nearly 1 ½ years, the 23-year-old Remillard is looking ahead to a break through year in 2010. “I’m happy with the ay my career is going and I’m hoping 2010 will be a big year for me,” he added. “Fans see an aggressive puncher when they watch me fight. I love to hit the body. But I want fans to see me boxing more. I can do it all. I have good boxing ability but have only showed it once against (former world champion) Mauricio Pastrana (Nov. 13, 208 – WDEC6). I’m working had to become a more complete fighter, which will allow me to have a longer career.

“Even back in the amateurs, I knew I could take and give a good punch. I’ve always like body punching. You’re legs may go from good head shits, but good body punching knocks the wind out. That’s my definition of hurt. Working the body slows down a fighter to where they’ll stand in front of me and I can pick ‘em apart with shots. Sometimes you’re stunned from a body shot but don’t really feel the effects for a few seconds. It’s delayed. Fans will see a lot of that from me this Saturday night.”
