It was an easy money bet that Floyd “Money” Mayweather wouldn’t stay in retirement. Is it due to financial problems stemming from the IRS or ego problems stemming from the love affair that boxing fans and writers have with the man who ascended to Mayweather’s former “Best Boxer in the World” status, Manny Pacquiao? Since Mayweather couldn’t get Pacquiao for this fight, he is taking on the man who is recognized as the “2nd Best Boxer in the World”, the man who gave Pacquiao two of his toughest and most-closely contested bouts, Juan Manuel Marquez. It will be an intriguing match-up of Mayweather’s speed and flash against Marquez’s consistency and steady attack. Is Mayweather back as the gold standard? Or will Marquez send the “Money” market crashing?

STYLE
Mayweather: A pure boxer with great speed who does everything well with an arsenal that includes a snapping jab, accurate right hand, and left hook that can be doubled and tripled with tremendous effect. Uses feint moves to freeze opponents and open punching lanes. Tucks his chin well behind his shoulder to roll with punches. Even on the ropes, he is a difficult target to land a solid punch. He doesn’t have great punching power. Most of his stoppage victories come from outpunching and outclassing his opponents but rarely scoring clean knockouts.
Marquez: A patient boxer who will take a few rounds to figure out his opponent’s style and then implement a strategy as the bout progresses. Boxes well from the outside and likes to counter punch but is also proficient of forcing the action and wearing down an opponent with an aggressive attack, mainly focusing on the body. Is most hittable when standing planted or moving backwards but also able to counter from this position. Not a traditional power-puncher but can wear opponents down in a war-of-attrition.
STRENGTHS
Mayweather: * Experience – Boxing is in Mayweather’s blood since his childhood. Completed an extensive amateur career by winning the bronze medal in the ’96 Olympic games. He has been competing successfully on a championship level for the past 11 years, facing and defeating all styles.
* Speed – Speed Kills. Mayweather has incredible hand and foot speed, which allows him to move inside, unload his offense, and dart out of range before his opponent can set himself.
* Ring Generalship – Mayweather knows every inch of the ring and how to control a fight. He knows when to attack, when to box, when to turn up the heat, and when to coast. Mayweather owns the ring when he is in there.
Marquez: * Technical Expertise – Marquez is a natural counterpuncher, who excels best when an opponent is coming forward but years of experience have improved all assets of Marquez’s game including fighting as the aggressor and body punching.
* Durability – In 55 career bouts, Marquez has never suffered a stoppage defeat. Even in bouts where he has been hurt or floored, he has shown tremendous resiliency in recovering and continuing to fight.
* Increasing Power – For years, Marquez’s brother Rafael was seen as the superior puncher between the two brothers. But lately, Juan Manuel has been living up to his “Dinamita” nickname, sitting down on his punches with explosive results.
WEAKNESSES
Mayweather: * Brittle Hands – Mayweather has been plagued throughout his career with hand injuries. The soreness in his hands, especially the right hand, reduces Mayweather’s exceptional offense, often forcing him to rely on his foot speed to dance around and pitter-pat opponents.
* Distractions – Floyd Jr. has reconciled with his father Floyd Sr., who has been assisting in training camp, which often causes a battle of egos with his brother and head trainer, Roger. Compounding issues with assault charges brought against Roger for a separate incident. During a time when there needs to be a harmonious training environment to combat Mayweather inactivity, this could be potentially disastrous.
* Punching Power – Most of Mayweather’s stoppage wins have come from an accumulation of punches. The usual result is the referee or opposing corner stopping the bout to prevent further punishment. It is rare to see Mayweather finish a bout with one punch dating back to his days as a 130 lb boxer.
Marquez: * Cuts – While it has yet to noticeably hamper him, Marquez has had problems with scar tissue around both eyes, resulting in cuts and swelling, which can turn into a significant handicap against such a sharp puncher.
* Slow Starter – The 1st round of his first fight with Pacquaio saw Marquez floored three times. In the rematch, Marquez was hurt early and floored in the 3rd round. He also encountered troubles early in his bouts with Diaz and Casamayor.
* Size – While he has appeared stronger and more physical in recent bouts, Marquez was fighting at 130 lbs just 18 months ago. This will be his first bout at 147 lbs after competing his last two at 135 lbs.
PREVIOUS BOUT
Mayweather: (12/08/07) –Mayweather last competed 21 months ago when he took on Ricky Hatton, both putting their undefeated records on the line. After nine rounds, Mayweather was still undefeated. Once Mayweather figured out Hatton’s pressure style, it became a one-sided affair until Mayweather closed the show in the 10th round, first flooring Hatton with a counter left hook and then finished him with a blistering combination.
Marquez: (02/28/09) – Marquez captured two vacant lightweight titles by going into Juan Diaz’s hometown and dismantling the younger and stronger fighter. Diaz had his moments early but as the bout progressed, Marquez used the younger man’s aggression against him and sapped his strength with a punishing body attack. With Diaz bleeding and stunned, Marquez scored the first knockdown with a combination of right hands and put Diaz down and out with a single uppercut.
3 BEST PERFORMANCES
Mayweather: * Diego Corrales (1/20/01) – Experts were torn on who to pick in this one with many leaning towards Corrales to win by KO. Mayweather never let him in the bout, knocking him down five times before the bout was halted in the 10th round.
* Arturo Gatti (6/25/05) – Although Mayweather was a solid betting favorite, many expected Gatti to make things rough for Mayweather. It never happened as Mayweather floored Gatti in the 1st round and dealt out a severe beating before Gatti’s corner stopped the bout after six one-sided rounds.
* Ricky Hatton (12/08/07) – Hatton was undefeated coming into the bout and set a gameplan of constant pressure to wear out Mayweather. After a few uncomfortable rounds, Mayweather was able to find his range and take over, flooring Hatton twice in the 10th round and forcing a stoppage.
Marquez: * Juan Diaz (2/28/09) – Against the younger Diaz, Marquez had to weather the early storm before starting to break his larger opponent. With Diaz rapidly weakening from a sustained body attack, Marquez increased his attack, flooring Diaz twice, the final time with a fierce uppercut, registering an impressive knockout win.
* Joel Casamayor (9/13/08) – The Cuban southpaw Casamayor was a multiple time champion with a rough and often foul-filled style and never stopped in 40 bouts. The bout was fought on even terms for the first half when Marquez started to assert himself and handed Casamayor his first stoppage defeat in the 11th round.
* Manny Pacquiao (3/15/08) – In Marquez’s rematch with Pacquiao, he countered the Filipino’s aggressive style with boxing and counterpunching, fighting Pac-man on even terms and winning in the eyes of many spectators. Recovered from a hard knockdown in the 3rd round and survived a vicious follow-up assault. The razor-thin decision went to Pacquiao but also helped enhance Marquez’s legacy.
QUESTIONS
Mayweather: * Will Mayweather be rusty after a near-two-year hiatus?
* Can Mayweather’s legs stand up to Marquez’s pressure and body punches?
* Will the distractions in training camp with Floyd Sr. and Uncle Roger carry over into Mayweather’s performance?
Marquez: * Can Marquez carry his power and speed with him in his first foray into the heavier weight class?
* Will the tender skin around Marquez’s eyes slice open from Mayweather’s sharp punches?
* Will the toll of many wars finally catch up to the aging Marquez?
PENECALE PREDICTION
Mayweather will open the bout by boxing from a distance, using his footwork and angles to keep the bout in the center of the ring and Marquez off balance. Marquez will take the role of aggressor and move forward, trying to cut Mayweather off and trap him against the ropes.
Mayweather’s superior speed, coupled with Marquez’s traditional slow start, will allow him to carry the first three rounds. Marquez will make a subtle adjustment in the 4th round, jabbing with Mayweather both to the head and body, in an effort to disrupt the faster man’s offense and create openings to land other punches. While Mayweather will prove an elusive target for head shots, Marquez will find success landing single but hard shots to the ribs and torso.
While Marquez continues to press the action through the middle rounds, Mayweather will alter his strategy and allow Marquez to advance, feinting his jab, firing quick right hands and pivoting out of danger, regaining control of the action.
Slightly ahead on points going in to the 8th round, Mayweather will show signs of rust and his legs will start to fatigue from Marquez’s pressure and body punches, forcing him to stand stationary. Marquez will continue the pursuit with single punches, trying to outwork Mayweather and seize the momentum.
With the bout virtually even going into the 10th round, a Mayweather combination punctuated with a stinging left hook will tear the skin around Marquez’s right eye. While the cut will not endanger a fight-stoppage, it will bother Marquez and energize Mayweather, who will pick up the pace and use his advantages in youth and speed to outwork and outdistance Marquez down the stretch until the final bell.
Both fighters will raise their hands in victory. As the decision is announced, it will go in Mayweather’s favor, in a unanimous nod, by close but accurate scores.

Las Vegas, Nev. (September 16) – Floyd “Money” Mayweather is known for his extra special ring walks and he’ll deliver another fan special Saturday night when Triple H®, one of the “BIGGEST” names in World Wrestling Entertainment, accompanies the six-time world champion to the ring for his fight against the five-time world champion Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and live on HBO Pay-Per-View®.
“Triple H is one of the greatest guys in the world and represents a whole universe of WWE fans that appreciate what he does,” said Mayweather. “He and his stature are huge and I can’t think of a better person to escort me to the ring for my return to boxing.”
“It is an honor to walk the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world back into the ring,” said WWE Superstar Triple H. “Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather has shown WWE tremendous support and it is my pleasure to return the favor this Saturday by standing at his side as he defeats Marquez in what I am sure will be boxing’s fight of the year.”
Mayweather is known for a long list of creative ring walks including past performances by famed entertainer 50 Cent and his former ABC DancingWith the Stars season mates Helio Castroneves, Wayne Newton and Mark Cuban. Other memorable walks included being carried to the ring while standing aloft a Roman Emperor’s throne and brought to the ring by a six-man drawn chariot.
Always accompanied by music of his own choosing, Mayweather’s past selections have used Bruce Springstein’s Born in the U.S.A., 50 Cent’s Straight to the Bank, Jay-Z’s What More Can I Say, 50 Cent’s Whip Your Head Boy, Queen’s We Will Rock You and Another One Bites the Dust, 50 Cent’s How We Do and Jay-Z’s Hove, to name some of his favorites. Saturday night’s selection is still a mystery and will only be revealed in the arena when his walk starts.
Triple H is 6’4″, 255 lbs and has won countless championships in WWE. He began his career by enrolling in Walter “Killer” Kowalski’s Pro Wrestling School in Malden, Mass., where the future WWE Superstar trained four days a week under Kowalski’s “tough love” tutelage, then divided his weekends between wrestling in the independent circuit and managing a Gold’s Gym in Nashua, NH. Montreal, Tuesday September 15th 2009 – Only 10 days separated from his first defense of the prestigious WBC World Light Heavyweight, young gun Jean Pascal (23-1-0, 15 KO) will meet with the media this morning during a press conference at Houston’s Restaurant in Laval. Jean is extremely satisfied with how preparation went for this Bout. “I did everything that needed to be done to keep the Green belt around my waist next Friday night. I cut no corners, and training camp was excellent. I will be very surprised if my opponent stays standing for the full 12 rounds” stated Jean, more confident than ever. His trainer, Marc Ramsay, did not disagree! “Jean has gained an enormous amount confidence and maturity since winning the World title. In my opinion, his preparation is actually superior to the one that beat Diaconu last June”.

Jean’s opponent, WBC #1 rated Mandatory challenger Silvio Branco (59-9-2, 36 KO), will arrive with his Team from Italy this Saturday. Branco will also come prepared, having set up training camp for the last 2 months with fellow Countryman and WBC Cruiserweight champion Giacobbe Fragomeni (26-1-1, 10KO). Branco was shocked at the victory of Pascal over Diaconu but remains unimpressed with the Laval born Champion. “I fought the majority of my most important fight in hostile territory and nobody has or will ever intimidate me. Pascal has some strengths but is far from my experience level. I am convinced I will return back to Italy with the shiny green belt”.
Adrian Diaconu will be an interested spectator:
Adrian Diaconu (26-1-0, 15KO) is back in Montreal after a much needed vacation with his family back in Romania. He has already begun training for a rematch with Pascal that, if all goes well, could take place December 11th at the Bell Centre. He will be one of Pascal’s biggest fan in his fight against Branco. “I admit that Pascal surprised me last June but the fight was much closer than he thinks. The difference in the fight was one or two rounds out of the full 12. Next time I will not over estimate him. I wish him a win vs. Branco so that we can settle the score”.
The return of Adonis Stevenson:
Undercard bouts for the « Ultimo Tango in Montreal » Gala are all set, and all of them promise action! Montrealer Adonis « Superman » Stevenson (12-0-0, 9KO) will lace up the gloves in the main supporting bout of the evening against Commonwealth and WBC Caribbean Champion Jermain « Choo Choo » Mackey (18-3-0, 14KO) in a Super Middleweight fight for one of the most difficult minor belts to hold and defend; the WBC International title. Stevenson returns from a 3-week training camp in Germany where he served as WBA 168 lb champion Mikkel Kessler’s (42-1-0, 32 KO) sparring partner. Stevenson has not boxed in over a year due to injuries but is now extremely motivated to make a run up the super middleweight latter. “Those rounds of sparring with Kessler made me realize I can any 168 pounder!” states Adonis. Mackey will be boxing in Quebec for the second time in his career, looking to avenge a 12 round decision loss to Jean Pascal in 2006 in his last visit.
A challenge awaits Sebastien Demers:
World rated Mascouche born Sebastien « Double Trouble » Demers (28-2-0, 10KO) will also box on the card, but will be facing a major challenge in front of talented American fighter Henry « Sugar Poo » Buchanan (17-2-0, 12KO). Demers put in some excellent rounds as Pascal’s sparring partner and declares himself in tip top shape for this challenge. “I know Buchanan is a good fighter but the rounds I put in with Pascal will be the determining factor”. This will be yet another super middleweight bout for Demers, who feel more comfortable at that weight.
Whittom vs Handy: An interesting rematch
Quebec native David Whittom (10-9-1, 6KO) and adopted Montrealer Carl « Kojak » Handy (23-7-2, 12KO) fought a furious bout in 2006. Handy won by majority decision. It is only fitting they do it again, for the benefit of a larger audience this time.
Bizier and Cote, Quebec City’s best crop of young talent:
The two most talented young fighters hailing from Quebec City, Kevin Bizier (5-0-0, 3KO) et Pier-Olivier Côté (7-0-0, 5KO), will round off the card in separate bouts and will both try to keep their undefeated records alive. Bizier will face Jose Leonardo Corona (8-9-0, 6KO) from Mexico and Cote will face his toughest challenger yet, Leonardo Rojas (8-8-3, 2KO) of Montréal, who fought bravely in decision losses to Antonin Decarie and Benoit Gaudet.

Niño puts himself in hospital with left hook
Texas Heavyweight Champion David Rodriguez punched veteran Robert Davis so hard Saturday in Monterrey, Mexico that he injured himself.
Rodriguez, who improved to 32-0 with 30 knockouts, was rushed to the hospital after registering an exciting third-round knockout over Davis .
The injury? A bizarre inch-and-a-half gash near the index finger of his left knuckle. The cause? Davis’s tooth, which punctured Rodriguez’s
glove, handwrap and skin and produced a grotesque injury that will sideline “Niño” for at least a month.
How’s that for a slicing left hook?
“I didn’t know my hand was messed up – and that he was missing a tooth — until after the fight,” Rodriguez said.
The El Paso fighter, ranked No. 13 by the WBA, sustained the freak injury in the first round.
“When I went back to my corner, I could feel that my energy was sapped,” Rodriguez said. “I didn’t feel right. Something was wrong. It felt
like someone was pouring warm water down my glove. Later, blood was dripping down my forearm.”
Despite his sudden weakness, Rodriguez showed guts in winning every round against Davis in a thrilling fight that had 10,000 in Monterrey
on its collective feet.
It wasn’t until after Rodriguez’s victory that the El Pasoan and his team noticed the cut.
“It was a deep gash,” Rodriguez said. “It’s amazing that it didn’t hit any tendons. It was bleeding profusely.”
The handwraps – soaked in blood – were kept by the fighter as a souvenir.
He was also issued a Tetanus shot and prescribed antibiotics, as such injuries can be dangerous. Former heavyweight champion
Evander Holyfield was also given a Tetanus shot after Mike Tyson bit his ear in their infamous 1997 title fight.
“Any more rounds, and it could have been bad,” he said.
Rodriguez will be out of action for at least 25 days, though he is hoping to fight again before the end of the year.

Tough Dominican Veteran Replaces Injured Damian Fuller
Fairfax, VA (September 16, 2009) – Ice Promotions officials announced today that DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley (35-11-1, 21 KOs) will meet Harrison Cuello (18-11-3, 14 KOs) in the eight-round co-Main Event at the live boxing card featuring Jimmy Lange scheduled for September 26, 2009 at the Patriot Center. The hard-hitting Dominican-born Cuello now fighting out of Albany, NY is stepping in as a solid replacement for Detroit southpaw Damian Fuller who suffered a broken rib in training camp last week and had to pull out of the anticipated fight.
A Washington, D.C. native and former WBO world champion, Corley is making his first area appearance since 2004. Looking to get back onto the national scene, he has recorded four wins in his last five fights, earning an eight-round TKO victory over Kenyan James Kimori in Astana, Kazakhstan on August 15, 2009.
An active fighter, Cuello lost to undefeated Ray Robinson in his last fight this past July, his sixth fight of 2009. He fought Mike Arnaoutis for the vacant USBA light welterweight title, dropping a 12-round decision back in 2008. Cuello and Corley share a common opponent in Randall Bailey. Cuello lost to Bailey last year for the IBA Intercontinental light welterweight title, while Corley split his two fights with the heavy puncher including winning the WBO belt in front of a hometown crowd at the DC Armory.
Presented by Valcourt Building Services, “Saturday Night Fights” features WBC USNBC champion and Northern Virginia fan favorite Jimmy Lange defending his title against former “Contender” teammate Jonathan Reid in the 12-round Main Event. Other beltway boxers slated to compete on the card include Bayan Jargal, Jennifer Salinas, Tony Jeter, Tracy Brewer, Barry Trotter, Keith Gross, Kendrick Walker and Alexander Johnson.

ADCC Northwest is Only a Week Away!

ADCC Northwest is only a week away. It is very important to know that this competition is open to everyone, no matter age or skill level.
For Children, this is a great way for them to learn the rules and grappling style that ADCC has to offer. They will have great medals and all kids get participation medals.
For Adult Novice and Beginners, this is a great no-gi grappling tournament. If you ever want the chance to compete at a higher ADCC level in the future, this is your shot.
For you Intermediates, this is your next step to represent America at ADCC. Test your skills against some of the best Intermediate grapplers in your area. This also gives you the chance to learn all the rules and become a better ADCC Grappler before you turn Advanced.
For Advanced grapplers, this is it. This is your shot to make it to ADCC Nationals in 2010. If you have any desire to fight the Nation’s Best, come test your skills this weekend. They currently have four grapplers per weight class who have made it to Nationals, and only need another 12 spots before June of 2010. They will be taking 1 more per weight class from this tournament. Come get it!
