This will be Doug’s first fight outside of the WEC where he was once crowned their Light Heavy Weight Champion and also outside the recently debunked PFC promotion. I’m sure Doug is very excited to re-enter the official forum of “MMA” THE CAGE …This is a fight that KO KID Keith Berry asked for………and as the old saying goes “be careful of that”…. Keith, now representing LA Boxing, has fought for the WEC, KOTC and ShoXC productions and has won 90% of the time by KNOCKING OUT his opponents with that massive right hand.

We also have Anthony “the A Train” Ruiz back again……and we feel he should change his name to “The Giant Slayer”…..Anthony has KO’d 13 of his 22 Wins and has taken on some HUGE opponents like Big Jimmy Ambriz in our FROM THE ASHES event and Gan McGee in our last event HOME TURF held at the Visalia Convention Center July 25th of this year.

Mike “The Animal” Cook is back with us again looking for a win over his opponent Paul Mince from the Underground in Bakersfield. Mike took a devastating Liver kick in his last fight at Strikeforce which was delivered by K1, Pride and PureCombat Veteran Scott Lighty so this is an important fight that Mike really needs to win. We also have a couple of local favorites who we understand have a vendetta to settle…….So in the spirit of communication “LETS TAKE IT TO THE CAGE” and see who is the badest.. Josh Herrick or Joe Morales.

Also back in the mix is LeAnn Jenkins out of the Valley Fight Club in Hanford…LeAnn came against Zoila Frausto in PureCombat’s last show in July, HOME TURF, and she saw that fight all the way to the end with a decision. LeAnn is very tough and is very ready to take on Angela Samaro from Salinas. Angela has a bit more experience but LeAnn has the home town advantage and the training that can make up that difference. This fight is guaranteed entertainment and we should be looking for a knock out with this fight.

And what many are looking forward to at this event is the 2nd leg of the 8 man 155lb tournament which began at the July 25th event, HOME TURF at the Visalia Convention Center. The names were pulled from a hat and the combatants for this portion of the tournament are……..Darren Crisp vs Doug Hunt and Marc De La Cruz vs Josh McCartney……. Both of these fights will be exciting as they match very well and the fighters in each bout are similar in their styles and backgrounds. This tournament will continue to a 3rd and final leg either December or early in the New Year and will end with someone holding the PureCombat 155lb Championship Belt and a multiple fight contract. Opening the show will be a very interesting mix with debuter’s Travis Hughes against “TJ” Frausto Caballero at 185 … these two guys will come out brawling from beginning to end and its sure to be a war. Introducing Drew Bittner; who’s coming out to make his mark by impressing PureCombat with his best against local 145 lb Carlos Costa from the Valley Fight Club in Hanford.

BOXING PROMOTERS ASSOCIATION HOLDS SECOND MEETING

Monday September 14th marked the second meeting of the much anticipated formation of the Boxing Promoters Association (BPA). Progress continued to be made in this historic venture, as once again close to thirty of the United States top promoters met together at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City.
After an all-day meeting, the promoters established and elected a Board of Directors, three Officers, as well as created eight working committees that will report recommendations to the Association.

The Association’s board of directors was voted on by all the members in attendance. After the voting was tallied, it was determined that the Board would be made up of Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing, Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment, Art Pelullo of Banner Promotions, Jimmy Burchfield of Classic Entertainment and Sports, and Don Chargin of Don Chargin Productions.

The Officers elected by the membership were:

BBU news: Big victory for Kauramäki in fight of the year in Finland – Glowacki-Rusiewicz for BBU International title

The most experienced active Finnish professional boxer Kai “Ironman” Kauramäki was the second boxer in history to defend his BBU title while squaring off with Czech-based Russian Magomed Abdurakhmanov. Abdurakhmanov, 25, was having record of 15 (8 KO) – 3 – 0 when stepping into the ring to challenge Kauramäki for BBU Middleweight title.

The Russian boxer started the title fight very strongly punishing “Ironman” with many heavy punches to head and body. After two minutes at the first round Kauramäki was quickly down for a count from uppercut to the jaw. Although Abdurakhmanov tried to hunt the quick end Kauramäki was able to hold and survive the round.
In the second round Kauramäki was able to use his height and reach advantage and experienced Finnish ring warrior dominated especially the end of the round with a couple of hard straights with both hands.

Early in the third round the Russian boxer was again battling back more actively than in the previous round and also was the aggressor by punching many times Kauramäki to the body behind his high guard but although at the later part of the round Kauramäki was again taking the control and the round.

In the 4th round Abdurakhmanov started to show some signs of tiring while both boxers continued fiercy punching; especially Abdurakhmanov concentrated on body punches. During the round the challenger was warned and taken a point away for punching to the back of head and the defending champion was moving into the lead on points.

In the next round while Kauramäki was taking the control more clearly the challenger was again taken a point away for an illegal punching. Although being forced to back to ropes a couple of times in this round Abdurakhmanov continued his power punching to Finnish boxer´s head and body.

In the 6th round Kauramäki showed his sharpness and experience; “Ironman” blocked and avoided the last desperate punches thrown by Russian Abdurakhmanov and then backed him to the red corner with 12-15 unanswered power punches forcing the referee Anssi Peräjoki to step in right at the same time when Abdurakhmanov was knocked down. After the fight the audience rewarded both boxers for an exciting and dramatical entertainment with loud applauses.

With the victory Kauramäki, who is managed by Jaakko Helminen, improved to 17 (6 KO) – 15 – 0 and has now won 4 consecutive fights.

The show which was promoted by Pro Box Team contained five entertaining professional bouts. Especially the main event has been afterwards praised by many Finnish boxing experts by saying it to be absolutely the fight of the year in Finland this far.

Glowacki-Ruciewicz for BBU International title in Cruiserweight division

The next BBU fight will be fought on next Sunday when Tomasz Babilonski with his Babilon Promotion will promote a show in Jozefow, Poland. The main event will be scheduled for 6 rounds and for vacant BBU International Cruiserweight title.

23 years old Krzysztof Glowacki (6 (3 KO) – 0 – 0) is the other challenger in this all Polish fight while the another challenger is more experienced 27 years old Lukasz Rusiewicz (7 (0 KO) – 6 – 1). Glowacki who is making his first title shot as pro boxer was a successful amateur as a youth boxer. In his latest pro fight Glowacki made a convincing performance by knocking out an undefeated Latvian Kaspars Ozolins in one round back in August 18th.

Rusiewicz, who is coming back after a decision loss to former heavyweight champion Herbie Hide 10 months ago, is now making his second attempt for a title as a pro boxer. Rusiewicz, who is known as very durable boxer, scored a biggest upset of his career this far back in June 2008 while beating Jean Claude Bikoi as an away boxer over 6 rounds in Luxembourg.

SPORTS FANS WEIGH IN ON MAYWEATHER VS MARQUEZ; YAHOOSPORTS.COM POLL SHOWS FIGHT “VERY” CLOSE TO CALL

Looks might be deceiving but they can’t fool everyone. A yahoosports.com poll (Who will win Mayweather vs. Marquez?) published last week showed the public is nearly split down the middle as to who will win the September 19 super fight between Floyd “Money” Mayweather,returning to the ring after an 18-month layoff and and Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez,the number one Mexican fighter in the world right now and moving up in weight to face the dangerous Mayweather.

With close to 55,000 (54524 total votes) fans participating, 51% think Mayweather will win; 46% say Juan Manuel Marquez will win and 3% think it will be a draw.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Marquez is coming to fight and fight hard Saturday night,” said Mayweather. “The fans have known all along this is going to be a great fight and their votes tell it like it is. But I can tell you right now that the 51% of them that are picking me are the ones that are right.”

“I am happy to see the people believe in me and my abilities and they will witness a great upset September 19,” said Juan Manuel Marquez. “I am bigger, stronger and faster, all of which I will bring to the ring with me Saturday night to beat Mayweather.”

The Evolution of a Champion: Wagnney Fabiano

The MMA Fight Council (MMAFC) was able to chat with Wagnney Fabiano recently. We got a much deeper insight into what makes this past (IFL) and future (WEC?) champion tick, and you will be surprised to learn just how he might become a champion again! What follows is a summary of our conversation combined with some public information about him, that we hope will help you come to know the man, the athlete, and the Champion better.

The Man

Wagnney Fabiano-Santos was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, thirty-four years ago. He is married and has a two year old daughter. He and his family live in Toronto, Canada. Wagnney moved from Brazil to Canada in 1998 in the hopes of pursuing greater employment opportunities than he had at home. He has been a teacher for over a decade. Wagnney is a deeply spiritual man, with a strong Christian faith. He is a very laid back, polite, and well spoken man.

The Athlete

Wagnney began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) when he was three years old. He competed in his first tournament when he was just four years old. He has earned the rank of third degree Black Belt in BJJ, under Wendell Alexander and Andre Pederneiras. Wagnney also trained in BJJ under Renzo Gracie and Carlos Gracie Jr.

Wagnney has had a very successful career as a top level BJJ player. He won five state titles; was three times a Brazilian National Champion; was a Brazilian National Teams Champion; won Pan-Am in ’95; was a member of the ‘97 BJJ World Champions team Nova Uniao; placed third in the world in Mundials ’98; Arnold Gracie Worlds Pro Division 2nd Place in ’04; ADCC Quarter Finalist in ’05, and too much more to list here.

In ’98 while looking to leave Brazil to find better opportunities, a friend invited Wagnney to visit Montreal. He visited, and liked it enough to stay. As far as he could tell, he was the first and only BJJ Black Belt in all of Montreal at the time, and he began teaching.

In spite of all Wagnney’s many BJJ accomplishments, and his growing number of students, he thought there might be bigger ways that he could challenge himself. He, like so many of us, had become a fan of MMA. In ’00 Wagnney decided to test himself, and experience the excitement of competing in a professional MMA match. In fact, over the next six years, he fought four times, winning each time. Then, in October of ’06, Wagnney got to fight Jeff Curran. He fought a tough fight, that Curran won by Split Decision. Many people then and now were positive that Wagnney won that fight. Wagnney is one of those people, but more on that shortly.

The Champion

Since that highly controversial Split Decision loss, Wagnney has gone on to fight eight more times, winning all eight fights. Seven of them were finishes, and only his last fight against Fredson Paixao had to go to the judges, and it was a Unanimous Decision.

Four months after that first, and only, loss, Wagnney was presented with a bigger stage to showcase his skills on. He had a student who was fighting in the IFL that got injured. As Wagnney was acquainted with Carlos Newton, and Carlos was working with the IFL, the path was cleared for him to take his student’s place. What happens next is the stuff legends are made of!

Wagnney went on to submit each of his next four IFL opponents. This put him in position for his next fight to be the IFL’s first ever Featherweight Championship fight. I was fortunate to be present at that fight, and watch Wagnney masterfully submit LC Davis in the first round to become the IFL Featherweight Champion. Next, he had an opportunity to showcase his standup in his first title defense, and KOd a game Shad Lierly in thirty-seven seconds of the first round. Unfortunately, shortly afterwards, the IFL ceased operations.

Knowing a good thing when they saw it, Zuffa owned, WEC signed Wagnney to a five fight contract. They wasted no time in testing Wagnney, and for his debut matched him against Akitoshi Tamura, also making his WEC debut. Tamura came from Shooto in Japan, where he was the Lightweight Champion. With only twelve seconds left in the fight, Wagnney was able to submit the very tough Tamura, to win his debut. After this hard fought loss, Tamura dropped down a weight class and now fights as a Bantamweight in the WEC. Wagnney’s next fight was against his very talented countryman, Fredson Paixao. While unable to finish Paixao, Wagnney won a Unanimous Decision.

You’re now caught up to the moment, in the former IFL Champion’s career. So, what comes next you might ask? Has Wagnney earned a Featherweight title shot, against the always dangerous and ready Mike Brown? Probably he has, many say, but he has to wait, for now. You see, there’s another exciting Brazilian Featherweight blowing through the division, named Jose Aldo. It just so happens that Wagnney and Jose have trained together and are very good friends. Even more, as Wagnney puts it they’re like brothers. He made a point of telling me that they’re much closer friends than, say, Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida! See where this is going?

Wagnney is genuinely happy for his friend Jose to get the next Featherweight title shot this November. In the mean time, the WEC has him fighting on October 10, against a twenty year old newcomer named Eric Koch (Coke). Koch is 8-0 in his young career, and will be fighting in the biggest fight of his life when he steps into the cage with Wagnney. I asked Wagnney if he felt bothered, slighted, or offended by this matchmaking decision, and he simply told me, “No”. He explained that he’s “just an employee” and all he needs to do is perform. He knows that Koch, is young, talented, and hungry. His plan is to do whatever it takes to fight for a win.

Here’s where things could get very interesting. IF Jose Aldo is able to dethrone Mike Brown, and IF Wagnney gets past Koch, that would set them up to face each other! Right? Or, would it? No, is the answer to that question. They already know their next move if this were to happen. Wagnney goes down in weight to bantamweight. If through some turn of events, Wagnney became the Featherweight Champion, then Aldo would drop down in weight. They will NOT fight one another, ever, for any reason! This could prove to be very interesting in the next couple of months! Stay tuned!

Wagnney had some interesting answers to a couple of other questions I had for him. I naturally asked him if he desires to avenge his only blemish (12-1) in that hotly debated Split Decision loss to Jeff Curran. He explained that while he has a lot of respect for Curran, since Curran doesn’t stand between him and a title, he has no interest at all in fighting him again.

Lastly, I asked him about his feelings regarding the WEC being folded into the UFC. He responded that it would be “a dream come true”. He explained that every fighter wants to fight in the UFC, and receive better exposure, and better money. He said, “I’m in the spot where I want to be.” He’s very grateful, and just wants to do his job the best that he can.

Wagnney Fabiano is a good man, an excellent athlete, and a humble Champion!
