MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 10, 2009) – New Hampshire native Richard Gingras, star of The Contender IV television reality television series, will be fighting in New Hampshire for only the third time as a pro when he enters the ring September 23rd in the 8th annual “Fight To Educate” charity event at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester.

The 8th annual “Fight To Educate,” presented by MB Tractor & Equipment, in association with Cedric Kushner’s Gotham Boxing, will benefit the SEE Science Center, Bobby Stephen Fund for Education, and The Veterans Count Club.

Three-time world title challenger Omar Sheika (27-9, 18 KOs) takes on unbeaten Czech Republic light heavyweight sensation Adam Hubinger (13-0, 10 KOs) in the 10-round main event.

Gingras (9-2, 5 KOs), former World Ringside heavyweight amateur champion, fights Robert Davis in an 8-round Special Light Heavyweight Attraction. “It’s a little nerve-racking but the best place for me to fight,” the Claremont (NH) fighter said about fighting in front of so many fans in nearby Manchester. “It’s great for my fans, family and friends to follow me as I grow as a fighter. They inspire me, leading up to the fight, but once I step into the ring I block them out and then it’s only me, Peter Manfredo, Sr. (his head trainer) and the guy standing in front of me (his opponent).”

Fighting his entire pro career as a ( very light) cruiserweight, Gingras will be fighting at his natural 175-pound weight for the first time on Sept. 23rd, his first fight since he participated in The Contender IV. “I learned from fighting on The Contender that it doesn’t matter where you’re from or what you look like,” Richard explained, “but that it’s all about right hands and left hooks. Fighters are given a chance to be just as good, or better, than their opponent. You just have to go out and get ‘em.

“I’ve always had a what-if attitude about fighting at the weight I’m supposed to be — light heavyweight. It feels more professional instead of just fighting somebody and I’m much more comfortable. All of the amateur titles I won – World Ringside, 2-time New England Golden Gloves and Rocky Marciano Tournament — were at heavyweight. I’ve fought guys over 225 pounds and I only weighed 188-190 as a cruiserweight (200 pound limit). This will be my first fight as a light heavyweight. The weight came off easy when I started working so hard with Peter. I still eat the same but this is my natural fighting weight. I’m chiseled; I was carrying a lot of water weight around. I’m still an aggressive, strong, power puncher, but now I’m lighter on my feet and I throw more punches.”

Unbeaten Worcester (MA) prospect Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez (11-0, 8 KOs), a 2-time U.S. national amateur champion, battles veteran super middleweight Robbie Tovar (15-4-1, 5 KOs), former NABC Latino title-holder, in the 8-round co-feature.

2008 U.S. Olympic Team alternate Danny O’Connor (8-0. 2 KOs), who made his pro debut at last year’s “Fight To Educate” show, meets an opponent to be determined in a 6-rounder. O’Connor, a Framingham (MA) native, captured gold medals at last U.S. Future Stars, in which, he was selected Outstanding Boxer of the tournament, and National Golden Gloves Championships.

Also in the undercard, undefeated heavyweight Faruq “The Dream” Saleem (38-0, 32 KOs) faces an opponent to be determined, while Bronx (NY) super middleweight Hajro Sujak (3-0, 1 KO) fights Eric Clinton in six and four round bouts, respectively.

Two-Time Olympian Daniel Cormier To Make STRIKEFORCE Debut At Challengers In Tulsa, OK On Friday, Sept. 25

NEW YORK (Sept. 9, 2009) – Two-time United States Olympic wrestling team member and NCAA Division I national championship runner up Daniel Cormier will make his mixed martial arts (MMA) debut at the STRIKEFORCE: Challengers event at Tulsa, Oklahoma’s SpiritBank Event Center on Friday, September 25.

Cormier will face an opponent that has yet to be determined on the live SHOWTIME televised portion of the first-ever STRIKEFORCE card in the state of Oklahoma.

“I think it’s an honor to be fighting for one of the top organizations in the world,” said Cormier, who celebrated his 30th birthday on March 20.

Since graduating from Oklahoma State University (OSU) with a degree in sociology in 2001, Cormier has continued to follow his passion for playing human chess on the mat, earning a place on the 2004 and 2008 United States Olympic wrestling teams.

“Making the first Olympic team was like a culmination of everything I had worked for,” said Cormier, who took fourth place in The Olympic Games held in Athens, Greece, in 2004, but was unable to compete in the 2008 games due to injury. “I’m a guy who really wants to make his mother proud and this made her so proud. I could see the joy and pride in her.”

His storied run as an amateur wrestler began in high school where Cormier was a three-time state champion in his native Louisiana, compiling a remarkable 101-9 record over four years of competition.

Before joining OSU’s powerhouse squad that has won a remarkable 34 national wrestling championships since its first season in 1914, Cormier stopped off at Colby Community College where he captured the junior college national championship two years in a row. His unyielding commitment to the sport stems from the fortitude it has added to his character, according to Cormier.

“Wrestling’s a sport that teaches you how to be strong physically and mentally,” explained Cormier. “It really molds you and makes you take responsibility for your actions. If you don’t train hard, it’s going to be you out there getting embarrassed.”

Cormier recently relocated to San Jose, Calif., in order to train at the famed American Kickboxing Academy, also home to STRIKEFORCE World Lightweight (155 pounds) Champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson and MMA superstars Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch, among others.

Of his decision to step into the cage, Cormier said, “I haven’t done anything since the Olympics and that competitive fire in me started to build and build last year. When I started feeling that, I started pursuing all avenues.”

K-1 legend and six-time world kickboxing champion, Ray “Sugarfoot” Sefo (1-0), who hails from New Zealand and fights out of Las Vegas, Nev., will take on Alabama-born Kevin “The Shaman” Jordan (11-7) in a heavyweight match.

Budding superstar and two-time All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri, Tyron “T-Wood’’ Woodley (5-0) of St. Louis, will face his sternest test to date when he meets former Tito Ortiz protégé, Zach “The Lisbon Outlaw’’ Light (4-8) of Huntington Beach, California in a welterweight (170 pounds) fight.

Amongst the Oklahomans scheduled to appear on the card are Tulsa rivals Travis “The Dark Knight” Calanoc (4-0) and Thomas Longacre (4-0), who will put their unbeaten records on the line against each other.

SpiritBank Event Center doors will open at 7:15 p.m. CT for the STRIKEFORCE: Challengers event and the first preliminary bout will begin at 8 p.m.

The live SHOWTIME telecast, which will include up to five bouts, will begin at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

Baltic Boxing Union news – Kauramäki to defend his BBU Middleweight title

The most experienced active Finnish professional boxer Kai “Ironman” Kauramäki is defending his BBU Middleweight title on Saturday evening 12th September at Pori Finland. The show which is called as “Mestareiden Ilta – The Evening of Champions” is containing 5 bouts which in all at least the other boxer is the former Finnish national amateur champion. The main event will be Kauramäki´s first defense for his BBU title which he won back in April 2009 in Poland in fight against Mariusz Cendrowski (POL) (currently 17 (7 KO) – 2 – 1). Caramelito Promotions´ show on August – boxers in action again on the weekend!

The personal coach for reigning Finnish national and Baltic (BBU) heavyweight champion Juho Haapoja, Petro “El Caramelito” Koskimies with his Caramelito Promotions professional boxing stable promoted his second pro boxing show in Ulvila Finland back in August 8th. The show which was the first outdoor show in Finland for over 14 years contained 7 pro fights at a sunny baseball stadium.

Fights were fought with boxers coming from Finland, Sweden, Russia and Estonia while also managers Oleg Bogdanov and Jason McClory were both having two of their fighters as home fighters in this special outdoor pro boxing show.

In the first fight Caramelito Promotions´ own light welterweight fighter Roope Puumalainen (FIN) got a victorious start for his pro career by beating Russian Denis Semenin over four rounds.

The another light welterweight fighter managed by Caramelito Promotions, Pekka Eskelinen (FIN) was unsuccessful when hunting his first victory as a pro boxer against Russian Rustam Shidginov. After Shidginov´s rough start Eskelinen was taking the control but was forced to give up the fight due to bad cut over his right eye.

In the main event Caramelito Promotions´ former two-time national amateur champion in Super-Heavyweight division Janne “Finnish Butterbean” Katajisto (FIN) made an impressive performance in a heavyweight clash which was scheduled for 4 rounds. With his great jab Katajisto punished his Russian opponent Igor Evseev until Katajisto ended the fight with a fiery body punch in time 1.58.

In other fights former Olympians and multi-time former Swedish champions Badou Jack (SWE/GAM) and Patrick Bogere (SWE/UGA) were achieving their second consecutive victories as pro fighters. Both Jack and Bogere have had a very quick start for their pro careers while after the Ulvila show they have achieved already one more victorious fight for their records on early September at Karlstad, Sweden. Also Oleg Bogdanov´s Russian fighters Alexander Filichkin (now 8 – 0 – 0, 2 KO) and Andrey Bogdanov (9 – 1 – 1, 2 KO) were improving their pro records with one more great victory there in Ulvila.

IVAN CALDERON AND ROCKY MARTINEZ, “UNDEFEATED CHAMPIONS” PPV,THIS SATURDAY IN PUERTO RICO

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (September 9, 2009) – “Undefeated Champions” is the name of the card that will feature world champions Iván “Iron Boy” Calderón and Román “Rocky” Martínez in title defenses this Saturday night (September 12), presented by PR Best Promotions, live on pay per view from the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan.

At yesterday’s press conference in San Juan, WBO junior flyweight champion Calderon (32-0-1, 6 KO’s) showed he was confident of defeating Rodel Mayol (25-3-1, 19 KO’s) in their rematch of the June 13 bout, when an accidental head-butt caused a cut to Calderon’s head and ended the fight in a technical draw.

“You will see the old Calderon, Calderon said, “the slick and fast Calderon.”

“I know that I will win this fight,” Mayol countered. “I’m prepared to do that and you will see Saturday.”

Meanwhile, WBO junior lightweight champion Martinez (22-0-1, 13 KO’s) will defend his belt against Argentinean Vicente Martin Rodriguez (25-2-1, 13KO’s), who is scheduled to arrive tomorrow in Puerto Rico.

There will be another 10 bouts in the card that begins at 6:00 p.m. with the PPV broadcast starting at 9:00 PM/ET.
