Historic STRIKEFORCE Event Will Include Rematch Between Ishida
And Melendez for Melendez’ Interim Lightweight Title

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Aug. 12, 2009) – He’s had a week and a half to think about his new opponent,
but Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez says he’ll be ready come Saturday as he takes on Japanese
wrestling expert Mitsuhiro Ishida in a rematch of their New Year’s 2007 fight in Japan.

Melendez had been scheduled to fight a rematch with Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh “The
Punk” Thomson until Thomson was forced to pull out because he couldn’t get medical clearance
for an injured leg. So, now, Melendez will risk his interim title against Ishida on this Saturday’s
“Carano vs. Cyborg” show at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

SHOWTIME will televise the bouts during a telecast that will begin at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT (delayed
on the west coast).

San Francisco’s Melendez (15-2) lost a unanimous decision to Ishida (18-5-1) in Saitama, Japan,
on Dec. 31, 2007, for the first loss of his career.

Melendez recently answered six questions:

QUESTION: You found out a week and a half ago you will be fighting a new opponent, Mitsuhiro
Ishida. How have you adjusted your training in such a short time for your new opponent?

MELENDEZ: “Well, I’ve been training for the past two and a half months for Josh Thomson so I
was training a lot of wrestling and stand-up for a taller, conventional fighter and now my opponent
is a short, southpaw wrestler. So there have been some changes and there’s not really a lot you
can do. I’ve been training wrestling so I’m OK there but I wish I had more time to train specifically
for Ishida. At the end of the day I train hard to fight whoever they put out there so I’ll be ready.”

QUESTION: What can you take from the first fight against Ishida that will help you on Saturday?

MELENDEZ: “I’m so glad I can get a rematch with a fight I know I can win. I remember he was fast
and he was tough and a great wrestler but he’s someone that I know is not going to punch me or
kick or really hurt me that much. I’m just looking forward to the rematch and putting on a better
performance. I’m definitely looking forward to facing him in my home state. When you get in the
ring you don’t think of where you are but with the travel and other factors involved it will be so nice
to face him here with the hometown crowd behind me.”

QUESTION: What is the one thing you noticed or would change in looking back at tape of that fight
the night you lost to Ishida?

MELENDEZ: “I’ve watched that fight a lot of times. Of course, there are tons of things I would
change on that night. It’s been in the back of my mind for awhile. I’m preparing a couple of things
that I think will surprise him. I know I’m in the best shape I can be right now and I’m just ready to
get in there and fight.”

QUESTION: What do you think about your future with Strikeforce?

MELENDEZ: “I love fighting for Strikeforce and on SHOWTIME. I know when I get out there I’m
showcasing my skills for the entire nation to see. But I don’t really think about the future much. I
just try and take it fight by fight. I want to get past Ishida and keep working hard and I know things
will work out for me.”

QUESTION: How do you relax when you’re away from the cage and not training?

MELENDEZ: “To tell you the truth when you’re training to be the best in the world there isn’t much
time to do anything except hang out with some of my loved ones and just get ready for my next
fight.”

QUESTION: You opened up a training center for kids in San Francisco. How important of a work
is that to you?

MELENDEZ: “It’s very important. I have my own gym called the “El Nino” Training Center and I
work with a group of kids called the “Scrap Pack.” I have one guy fighting Aug. 20 and two others
Sept. 5 so right after this fight I’ll have some down time to just hang out but then it’s back in the
gym and helping my team out. It’s a year-round sport but a sport that I love. I couldn’t see myself
doing anything else.”

World Championship Fighting Announces Four Featured Bouts For September 26th, 2009

Boston Mass. August 12, 2009 – World Championship Fighting today announced four featured fights for their September 26th show at the Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington, Mass.

In what promises to be a war, WEC Veteran Mike Campbell makes his return to World Championship Fighting when he takes on the ultra-tough brawler, Mike Medrano. When Campbell last fought for WCF, he was victorious in the night’s main event, knocking out Rich Moskowitz in les than 90 seconds. Both fighters have shown in their previous fights that they have the punching power to end the fight in an instant. You definitely don’t want to blink in this one!

After an unsuccessful run at the 135 pound title which snapped his five fight winning streak, Dan Bonnell moves back to his more natural weight of 145, and looks to get back to his winning ways. He is one of only two fighters to compete on every WCF card, and has gone 5-1 in the WCF. His opponent will be WCF newcomer Josh LaBerge, who recently defeated tough local fighters Frank Latina and Chris Simmons in consecutive weekends. LaBerge pushes the pace and will really bring the fight to Bonnell. No matter who wins this fight, it’s going to be action packed.

Also included on the WCF8 fight card is a grudge match between two undefeated WCF fighters. Kevin Corrigan from USMMA brings his 2-0 record (both via TKO) and heavy hands to the ring on September 26th when he takes on 4-0 Jiu-Jitsu ace Saul Almeida. Almeida was last seen defeating Dan O’Keefe by “Peruvian Necktie” at WCF 7, and he’s looking to keep to his winning ways against Corrigan.

In another featured fight, two local welterweight studs make their WCF debut. Dennis Olsen has quietly gone about his business up in NH, and seems to just keep submitting guys. He’s huge at 170 and hasn’t lost at that weight in quite some time. He’ll be taking on 7-1 Ryan Schieding. Both guys are great wrestlers, and both have great jiu-jitsu. You certainly don’t want to miss this technical battle.

SAN JOSE, CALIF. (Aug. 11, 2009) – Female MMA superstar Gina Carano and Japanese wrestling expert Mitsuhiro Ishida participated in a media workout Tuesday at American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Calif.

Two of the top female fighters in the world, the undefeated Carano and Brazilian powerhouse Cris Cyborg will battle for the first-ever STRIKEFORCE Women’s Championship title on Saturday, Aug. 15 live on SHOWTIME® at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

Ishida will face San Francisco’s Gilbert Melendez in a rematch of their Dec. 31, 2007 fight for the STRIKEFORCE Interim Lightweight Title. Melendez will try to avenge the unanimous decision loss to Ishida, which was the first of his career.

Renato “Babalu” Sobral and Gegard Mousasi will fight for the STRIKEFORCE Light Heavyweight Championship in a showdown fans have been salivating for.

Carano, who is trained by MMA legend Randy Couture, has achieved larger than life status in the past year. In a Yahoo! online poll that named the “Top 10 Most Influential Women of 2008,” Carano ranked fifth, placing ahead of First Lady Michelle Obama and famed journalists Katie Couric and Barbara Walters. Carano has also been selected No. 16 on Maxim’s Hot 100 List and profiled by ESPN’s newsmagazine show E:60.

Confident of ruining Carano’s eagerly awaited return to the cage is the rugged Cyborg, who’s been known to devastate foes with her strength and has been calling out Carano for several months.

What Carano had to say on Tuesday:

GINA CARANO:

“I train, realizing that I haven’t reached my potential and knowing that she probably hasn’t reached hers yet.

“This is going to be really tough. I’m not going to lie. But, I’m going to try to make it as easy as possible. I predict a really tough fight.

”Five rounds is going to be difficult. It’s 16 more minutes than I’m used to. But, I feel like it gives you a different mentality. At the beginning, I was like ‘What did we ask for?’ But, now I’m happy with it and I think that (my preparation for the extra time) could help me in the long run.

“A quick knockout or submission would be nice. I don’t think this fight is going to go the distance.

“I really respect Strikeforce. They aren’t afraid to put on really good fights and they’re making moves. I feel honored to be a part of this and I’m glad they are doing what they’re doing. They are very professional.

“I think Cyborg said it best – (the winner) is going to be determined by the person who makes the least amount of mistakes or the one who gets caught first.

“Her muscles might look bigger, but I am strong (laughed). I know I smile and I joke around now, but when it comes fight time, I take it very seriously and know how to get down.”
