FEWEST FIGHTS: Jeff “Hit Man” Harding holds the record for fewest fights for a major world light heavyweight champion, 15, when he defeated Dennis Andries by a 12th-round majority decision in 1989.

KAZAK WORLD CHAMPIONS: Kazakhstan has produced three major world pro boxing champions – 1990 – WBC super featherweight Aratoly Alexandrov (Sjakhsinsk), 2000 WBC heavyweight Oleg “Big O” Maskaev (Zhambul), 2001-2003 – IBF cruiserweight Vassily “The Tiger” Jirov (Zhambul).

KZ WORLD TITLE FIGHT: Jirov knocked out Alex Gonzalez in the only major world title fight held in Kazakhstan, back on February 6, 2001 in Almaty. Present WBO light middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk (36-0) fought in the co-feature and former world heavyweight champ Samuel Peter fought on the undercard.

ROAD WARRIOR: WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel “Chico Guapo” Campillo doesn’t mind fighter in the backyards of his opponents. Last March he captured the European Boxing Union light heavyweight title by beating a Dane, Lolenga Mock, in Denmark by 12-round decision. Campillo won his WBA title belt this past June by beating the Argentinean champion, heavily favored Hugo Hernan Garay, by a 12-round decision in Argentinia.

FEWEST FIGHTS EVER FOR WORLD CHAMPS: The list of major world champion with the fewest fights when they captured their respective belts is as follows: 3, Saensak Muangsurim, WBC light welterweight; 4, Veeraphol Sahaprom, WBA bantamweight; 6, Paul Weir, WBO minimumweight; 7, Jeff Fenech, IFF bantamweight & Muangchai Kitikasem, IBF flyweight; 8. IRON MAN: Former WBO light welterweight champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley has fought the iron of the 140-pound division, defeating Randall Bailey, Felix Flores and Ener Julio (2). Tony “The Tornado” Penecale Haloween Costume Highlights Michael Vick Debate

Tony “The Tornado” Penecale is the co-host of the weekly Fight News Unlimited radio show, but he’s also a big fan of Halloween and inventive costumes. Amidst the Michael Vick dog fighting controversy, Tony took third place in a costume contest for his portrayal of “ConVick” before the controversial quarterback became a Philadelphia Eagle. Click on the picture above to see how Tony’s costume is now being used to make light of the QB’s 2-year signing with the Eagles.

Vick will surely be chased by the dog fighting scandal for a long time, but second chance advocates are hoping he can make a smooth transition back to the sport that put him on the map. Tony’s frustration goes beyond the dog fighting aspect, as he’s not convinced Vick will ever be a good quarterback. You can hear all of Tony’s complaints about the situation on last night’s Fight News Unlimited Combat Sports Show, where Tony was distracted repeatedly by the news of the signing.

Although most people may be wondering why the heck Philly would take the PR risk on a guy like Vick, it seems that it was actually Philly QB Donovan McNabb who lobbied for Vick to join the squad. McNabb and Vick are longtime friends dating back to their college days. It was McNabb who hosted Vick as a Syracuse recruit, and they have been close ever since. The only logical explanation for McNabb wanting Vick on the squad other than the friendship looks to be the competitive aspect, as a guy like Vick will surely help keep McNabb on his toes. Vick could also take the weight off McNabb’s shoulders in what will be a long season ahead. McNabb is injury prone, and everyone knows from the example of the Patriots last year that you can’t expect the backup to be as good as your star QB if he’s not really a star himself.

As they say, birds of a feather flock together. The Former Falcon Vick is getting an upgrade in that sense, going to a bigger and better bird for a mascot and a much better city in my opinion. As for the Philly faithful and whether they will ever truly accept and embrace Vick, don’t count on it happening overnight. It will take at least a year for the controversy to die down and for Vick to raise enough eyebrows with his playing to prove he belongs back in the NFL on any team.

As for the dog fighting, it goes without saying that Vick allowed incredibly irresponsible behavior to occur on his property and funded a despicable and disgusting enterprise. Many might ask whether time served is enough to ease the criticism, but others will say he didn’t serve enough time. A recent interview with Vick revealed that he sometimes cried at night in prison, which a man in that kind of spotlight is really foolish to admit. At the same time, he must be aware that all his critics and detractors want to be convinced that he truly suffered the consequences. Still, he can’t expect an easy road ahead by any means. He might be able to shed the ankle bracelet and the prison garb, but he will be forever handcuffed by his own bad reputation.

As for Tony “The Tornado” Penecale, his own Halloween costume has come back to haunt him. How ironic is that?

“INSIDE MMA” KNOCKS OUT ONE HUNDRED EPISODES ON HDNET

After six weeks of hard work in the isolated mountains of Big Bear California, former two-time featherweight world champion, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, is entering the final days of training camp.

“I’ve been sparring with Sugar Shane Mosley and the knowledge he’s been giving me is priceless,” Guerrero said. “Shane is a great teacher and I’m grateful to be learning from one of the best fighters in boxing history. My weight is good and I can’t wait to arrive in Houston. The final days are here and all the hard work and sacrifices will pay off come fight night.”

Guerrero challenges current two-time world champion, Malcolm Klassen from South Africa, August 22, 2009 at the Toyota Center in Houston TX, televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark. On the line will be Klassen’s IBF Jr. Lightweight title. Guerrero vs Klassen is the co-feature to Juan Diaz vs Paul Malignaggi. Guerrero is seeking his third world championship in his second weight class.

DON “WAR-A-WEEK” CHARGIN SIGNS MMA SUPERSTAR NICK DIAZ TO BOXING CONTRACT

(Cambria California, August 15, 2009) – Having been one of the few boxing promoters around today to have witnessed the great Sugar Ray Robinson fight live, it is no easy feat to impress Don “War-a-Week” Chargin. This hall-of-fame promoter has been touted by his peers as possibly being the best match-maker the boxing world has ever bore witness to. This is why it is with great intrigue that at the tail end of his long, illustrious career that Chargin would actively pursue what most would consider a long-shot proposal.

Having promoted boxing matches from various era’s including the Dick Tiger-Gene Fullmer middleweight title bout at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park in 1962, the veteran promoter relishes the opportunity to promote one of both boxing and mixed martial arts most entertaining fighters.

Nick Diaz is a fighter many have proclaimed as the “Arturo Gatti” of the MMA world. His bloodbath with Japan’s best 155-pounder, Takanori Gomi was a perfect example as to why many fight fans following both mixed martial arts as well as boxing have labeled him as such. This six foot tall southpaw has waged war in virtually all of the major mixed martial arts promotional firms such as Strikeforce, UFC, Pride, WEC, IFL and the now defunct EliteXC. Diaz has openly touted his desire and willingness to step into the boxing ring to take on any fighter willing to match wits, skill, and bravery with the Stockton resident.

Don Chargin states, “I know the signing of a mixed martial arts fighter might be considered controversial by many boxing fans across the world. When the subject of mixed martial arts versus boxing arises, it always comes down to the boxer winning a boxing match easily and vice versa for MMA. However, after having seen the replays of Diaz’s fights over the course of his career, I truly believe that this kid has what it takes to really make for some very entertaining fights within boxing. While some would state that he’s merely a slugger possessing a good chin and a heavy work-rate, there’s something about his rythm and fighting intelligence that really caught my eye.”

Currently signed with mixed martial arts promotional firm, Strikeforce, it has allowed Nick the leeway to attempt to become the first athlete in the history of both sports to become a dual sport champion. This is something that would never have been remotely possible had Diaz been signed due to the UFC due to Dana White’s reluctance to allow his fighters to participate within boxing.

Chargin continues, “I think the battle between the MMA world and the boxing world has reached it’s boiling point and it’s time to settle this inside the ring. Out of all the MMA fighters I’ve seen today, Nick is the only guy that I feel would truly put up a battle. Having been around from the era of Sugar Ray Robinson, Rocky Marciano, and other past greats, I can tell you right now that Nick Diaz is as tough as they come. He’s also one of the few MMA guys that actually regularly puts in the gym work to improve his boxing IQ and I think it shows when he fights in the cage.”

Riding a 5-fight win streak as well as having compiled a record of 20-7 in the octagon, Nick Diaz is ready to take the boxing world by storm as he’s gunning for the top fighters in or around the super middleweight division.

Trainer and manager Cesar Gracie states, “Nick is just one of those guys ready and willing to fight anybody. Literally anybody. He just loves to fight. It’s been one of his career goals to become a dual sport world champion and I think the world is ready to see a fight in which a top MMA guy in his prime takes on a top boxing guy in his prime. It’s never been done before and I think Nick will surprise a lot of people come fight night.”

Who would have thought that at end of such a long, roller coaster career within boxing that Don “War-a-Week” Chargin would venture into such a venture that might have some questioning his eye for talent?

Don states, “A lot of people have called me a lot of names over the course of my career. That doesn’t bother me. It bothers me when fighters don’t take their craft seriously and don’t give it their all. Nick isn’t one of those guys and trust me… from what I’ve seen, he’ll give anybody in boxing a run for their money.”
