Can Short Fuse Keep Cool Head?

With four of his seven professional losses happening in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s octagon, Ed Herman needs his W’s to outnumber his L’s. While his UFC record is currently even, another defeat could spell an end to the hot-headed ginger’s career with the Zuffa promotion.

Fortunately, April saw an end to a two-fight losing streak when “Short Fuse” took a unanimous decision over the local favorite, David Loiseau, at UFC 97, in Canada. The firey-haired contender planned to continue the victorious trend in September’s UFC Fight Night 19 against Aaron Simpson. Now, however, it appears those plans have changed.

With an injured James Irvin stepping down from his scheduled bout against Wilson Gouveia at UFC 102, Herman is stepping up. With more than half of Gouveia’s wins coming by way of submission and another third coming by way of knock-out, the well-rounded American will need to bring a cool head and a broad arsenal of skill.

Unfortunately, cool head, as his moniker would suggest, is not something the middle-weight is known for. He’s an angry fighter with a tendency to let his emotions get in his way. That being said, he has 15 wins on his overall record to prove he is capable of effectively directing his aggression to his benefit. He can also hold his head up with the knowledge that none of his losses were to tomato-can opponents.

With less than a month to prepare for the Brazilian, Herman is taking a huge chance. But, if he can check his emotions at the door, the gamble could pay even bigger dividends. A win over Gouveia is technically more important than his win over Loiseau, as Herman was supposed to be a tough tune-up for the Canadian. A victory at 102 could set the former TUF finalist against more high-ranking competition which, if he stays focused, could lead the very able fighter to Anderson Silva.

“Canadian Kid” Continues Climb Back to 122 lb. Crown Against Tough Veteran

RAMA, ON (Wednesday, August 6, 2009) – With his sights firmly set on another crack at a world title, former IBF Junior Featherweight world champion Steve “The Canadian Kid” (29-1, 11 KO’s) returns to the ring on Friday, September 4th, to face capable, battle-tested Argentine veteran Sergio Javier Escobar (11-8-1, 2 KO’s), at Rumble at Rama IX, in Rama, Ontario.

The eight round showdown will be the evening’s co-feature, just prior to the WBO Junior Bantamweight title battle between champion Jose Lopez (39-7-2, 32 KO’s) and undefeated 19 year-old upstart Marvin Sonsona (13-0, 12 KO’s).

Combine that momentum with the fact that the energized Escobar has never been stopped, and has nothing to lose, and Molitor may be looking at a battle of survival as opposed to a chance to get in some rounds.

My opponent is very tough. He fought Chad Dawson for the light heavyweight championship of the world. He has been successful at a lighter weight. However, he will find out very early in the fight that the cruiserweight division is very different from light heavyweight. Many thought he beat Lacy in a very close fight. I will be bigger and stronger, although I know he punches well. But it will be just a matter of time before I break him down. I’m sure he will be competitive early but, if he gets too aggressive, I’m sure I will knock him out. If he tries to be smart and patient, using his speed, I will break him down in a battle of attrition.

“I know I need to be impressive. Look, this is a tough guy who is respected, but he is not a real cruiserweight. In the past other fighters have come up and done very well, but it’s my job to make sure that after this fight he realizes he made a big mistake and send him back down to light heavyweight. I respect him but he will not be able to hang for ten rounds. I am in a mental place I have never been in before. I will do anything to win. I am 100-percent focused on punishing him and making a strong point that I am ready for better opposition. The only fight I am thinking about is this one.”

Colombian knockout artist Mendoza (29-7-1, 25 KOs) is a dangerous puncher who has put 25 of 29 victims to sleep. He also specializes in knocking off undefeated opponents on the road having upset 17-0 Tokunbo Olajide in New York City and 19-0 Rubin Williams in Detroit. Mendoza lost his only world title shot in 2007 to Chad Dawson for the WBC light heavyweight championship. Ten months later, Mendoza dropped a controversial 10-round majority decision to Lacy.

Living legend Jones defends his NABO light heavyweight crown in the 12-round main event versus Lacy to determine the best “hooker” in boxing. PHILADELPHIA (August 6, 2009)—This Saturday night Mike Jones will look to continue to success that has made him one of the top prospects in the world when he takes on Lenin Aaroyo in a scheduled ten round bout for Jones NABA Welterweight belt from Bally’s in Atlantic City.

This is the third opponent in the last ten days for Jones, 17-0 with fifteen knockouts. He doesn’t seem to moved by not knowing who he is facing from one day to another.

“I am not affected. It’s just like the amateurs when you don’t know who you will face.” said Jones.

Originally Jones was supposed to fight Larry Mosley. Mosley pulled out of the fight on two separate occasions and former world title challenger Ben Tackie was summoned but Tackie had problems with his medicals which brought in Aaroyo.

“I would have liked to face Tackie the most. He has a good name and has been in with the very best”, continued Jones.

With bouts with other highly regarded prospects possibly on the horizon Jones is not taking Aaroyo lightly.

“I don’t know much about him but I am not looking past him. I know there has been talk with some other guys in the media so hopefully a fight with someone like Henry Crawford will be the next step after Saturday. I know I have to be patient and timing is everything.”
