First Fight To Air This Fall, Live on SHOWTIME®

NEW YORK (August 3, 2009)–-After a week of intense negotiations and speculation, the hottest topic of discussion in the professional fight world has come to a head as the world’s number one heavyweight and most sought after mixed martial arts (MMA) champion Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko has signed a historic, multi-fight agreement that will see him headline mega-events co-promoted by world championship promotions STRIKEFORCE and M-1 Global.

Emelianenko, known globally as Fedor, will make his premium television debut this Fall when his first fight under the new agreement airs live on SHOWTIME®. Up until now, Emelianenko’s live fights have aired exclusively on pay-per-view in the United States.

“I am looking forward to going back to work and fighting at the highest level,” said the 33-year-old Emelianenko. During his nine year professional fight career, which included a four and a half year stay with the world’s former top MMA promotion, the now defunct PRIDE Fighting Championship, the Russian native has faced and defeated all comers.

In his last effort, the 6-foot, 235-pound Emelianenko decimated the number two ranked heavyweight at the time Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski with a single punch in the first round (3:14) of the main event of Affliction: “Day of Reckoning” at Anaheim, California’s Honda Center on January 24.

Though his official professional record is 30-1, Emelianenko is considered undefeated. The only blemish on his record is a December 22, 2000 fight that was stopped after 17 seconds and declared a TKO in favor of his opponent, Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, due to a cut Emelianenko sustained in the opening seconds of the matchup in Osaka, Japan.

Amongst those on Emelianenko’s list of impressive conquests are former PRIDE Heavyweight Champions Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mark “The Hammer” Coleman, and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic as well as former UFC Heavyweight Champions Kevin “The Monster” Randleman and Tim Sylvia, whom Emelianenko submitted with a rear naked choke only 36 seconds into their main event showdown at Affliction: “Banned” on July 19, 2008.

Despite his extensive experience, Emelianenko’s debut under the new STRIKEFORCE-M-1 venture will, interestingly enough, mark his first start in a cage. To date, all of his bouts have taken place in a ring.

After co-promoting two events live on SHOWTIME in 2007 and 2008, STRIKEFORCE in March 2009 signed a multi-year agreement to stage live MMA events on the premium cable television network.

Cage Fighting Xtreme: BATTLE UNDER THE STARS FIGHT RESULTS & VIDEOS (8-01-09)

The Brockton faithful showed up in force Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium in “The City of Champions” for a scheduled 27 mixed martial arts fights taking place inside a cage set up over the pitcher’s mound of the Brockton Rox playing field. Local Brocktonians Shawn Baker and Steve Dunn did not disappoint (see videos below), both winning their amateur fights and keeping their hometown fans happy. At one point leading up to Dunn’s fight the crowd closed in from the stands and surrounded the cage. It took officials about 10 minutes to get everybody to settle back into their seats so the fights could continue.

The fight card actually had to be cut short after one of the last fights ended only :12 into the contest and without a punch landing cleanly. As 185-pounders Anthony Dick and Todd Chattelle closed the distance between them, Dick slipped on the wet canvas and immediately injured his ankle. The fight was literally over before it began. Condensation caused the slick mat due to the cooling outdoor temperatures that started to set in after midnight. Fighter safety concerns led to the decision to close the show early.

The live band, extensive fireworks show, amazingly hot ring girls, and the action-packed slate of fights made up for the late mishaps.

RING GIRLS:

A slate of amateur fights began the evening. Ethan Truong took on Frank Stone first at 150 pounds. Stone was unable to put together much of an offense in the first round, landing one right hand before being taken down by an awkward head throw. Truong spent much of the round working for full mount and landing shots on Stone’s ribs. Stone fought off the full mount until the closing seconds. Truong tried to end it with a kimura from there, but he was unsuccessful.

Stone came into the second round slugging hard. He landed some real smacking left hooks that might have ended the night for Truong if they landed a bit closer to the temple. Instead, Truong grappled for the takedown and got it. Truong expertly took Stone’s back and sunk a rear naked choke that ended the fight at 1:52 of the second round.

Next on the amateur slate came Prime Athletic Club’s Dave Irving against Andy Robertson of MMA of Southern Maine. These 155-pounders provided some early intensity for the growing crowd to really get excited about. Robertson scored the first takedown, but Irving quickly scrambled up to his knees and grappled there with Robertson’s arms around his neck for a while before winding up on top. Robertson wriggled free and up to his feet where he was able to score the next takedown and move to side control. Robertson postured up and began throwing wild rights and lefts at Irving’s head until he saw an opportunity to sink a heel hook. As he tried to lock up the move, Irving got a hold of one of Robertson’s heels and tried the same thing. Neither fighter could improve their position before the bell, though Irving did manage to land some Charley Horse punches to Robertson’s thigh.

Robertson came out swinging in the second round, landing an inside leg kick, an uppercut, and a right before throwing Irving to the canvas. Irving regained his composure and avoided damage on the ground. He worked his way into a reversal only to land a few rib shots. Robertson brought the fight to the knees again and kept a tight headlock on, later trying to transition to a guillotine. Irving wound up in top position and started out slugging Roberston’s ribs. Irving then pushed Robertson up against the cage fence, and Irving exploded with a hail of punches as Robertson turned his back to work an escape. Robertson eventually collapsed from the punishment, giving Irving the TKO.

Heavyweights Greg Armstrong of Bishops and Aaron Ames of Team Cobra slugged it out next. Armstrong played it safe early, covering up as Ames came forward throwing wildly, bulling Armstrong against the ropes. Ames worked a choke to the ground, but both men were soon back on their feet again. Just when this sloppy fight seemed to be working in Ames’ favor, Armstrong came out of nowhere with a series of one-two combos that left Ames battered and bleeding when the ref finally stepped in to call it. Amazingly enough, Ames was able to stay standing despite the solid beating and showed tremendous heart by not going down under the barrage of shots.

155-pound amateurs Team Dexter’s Jeff Lyon and Wai Kru’s Brandon Douglas didn’t take long to thrill the crowd. Lyon landed a wild right hand early and two huge looping rights followed before Douglas took complete control. Douglas won the grappling game, getting Lyon’s back twice before deciding on a guillotine choke to end it.

Cape Cod Fighting Alliance’s Collin Smith took on Team Cobra’s A.J. Marigliano at 155 pounds in another quick fight. From the first bell to the final TKO blow, both combatants were whipping the crowd into a frenzy with wild punching and kicks to the chest. Finally Smith bulled Marigliano up against the cage fence. With Marigliano’s back to him, Smith pounded him out with hooks to the head and won by TKO.

The professional match between 170-pounders Mark Chauppetta and Joe Kavy interrupted the amateur schedule. Chauppetta’s twin 14-year-old sons, Andrew and Troy, were born with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a degenerative muscle disorder that causes the breakdown of muscle tissue over time. Chauppetta always donates each purse to the cause to find a cure. A crew from HDNET’s Inside MMA was on hand to film the match. Chauppetta did not disappoint. Mustering nothing more than a few weak punch connections and a failed arm bar, Kavy was quickly outmatched. Chauppetta scored the takedown to an arm triangle that he broke to do some slugging from the top. As Kavy tried to get back up, Chauppetta squeezed a tight guillotine around his neck, and Kavy had to tap out. To find out more about Mark’s cause, click here.

Team SYT’s M. Abdurakhmanov took on Team Cobra’s Bruce Boyington at 160 pounds. Abdurakhmanov’s monotone expression never registered anything other than seriousness from start to finish. Abdurakhmanov landed an early left hook that staggered Boyington and allowed for a quick takedown. Abdurakhmanov would up in full mount until Boyington gave him his back and a perfect opportunity to sink a deep rear naked choke.

185-pounders Robby Roberts of Brute Force and John Clarke of Wai Kru faced off in another quick fight ending early in the first round with Clarke locking up a nice Kimura.

Bishops’ Brett O’Teiri took on USMMA’s Bob Puntunto in another 185 pro showdown. Both fighters landed early kicks, with Puntunto landing his to the leg and OTeiri landing his to the chest. The early slugging broke up when Puntunto missed a kick and slipped. O’Teiri seized the moment and jumped on top of Puntunto, swinging wildly. Puntunto kept his cool and struggled to his feet. Intent on payback, he hoisted O’Teiri off the ground and slammed him to the mat for a takedown. Puntunto landed a few right hooks from the top position, but O’Teiri once again brought the fight back to the feet where both men exchanged knees before O’Teiri scored a takedown that proved to be more beneficial to Puntunto who locked on a guillotine and ended the fight with his back against the cage fence.

A fireworks show preceded the heavyweight tournament. Lee “The Beast” Beane took apart Luke Corona in the first match, dominating his opponent and winning by way of unanswered strikes:

The next tourney fight barely made it off the ground before being halted when Arthur Mullen tapped out after getting his back taken by Jason Dolloff. Although it didn’t appear that the beer-bellied Mullen had taken much punishment, he later could be heard uttering something about his athletic cup “stabbing” him:

Dolloff’s showing at least left him without serious injury, unlike the next heavyweight on the losing end of a fight against Josh Watson. The crowd got a great laugh as a very overweight and flabby-breasted fighter who was not on the program came to the cage smiling and dancing, oblivious of what was about to happen to him at the hands of Watson. Although it was tough to catch his first name, it sounded like his last name was Barrios. This was one of the ugliest fights of the night and a complete mismatch. Surprisingly, the chubbier fighter did land a few kicks to the chest, but otherwise his effort was hopeless. Watson only needed to land a couple sloppy hooks to knock Barrios off balance and set up a tornado of finishing blows. By the time Watson finished Barrios was face down on the canvas, the bridge of his nose split wide open and dripping blood in a heavy torrent. The cleanup from that fight lasted about 10 times as long as the fight itself. The official time of the stoppage was 47 seconds into the first round.

Juliano Coutinho faced off against Pat Bennett next. Bennett came out as if he was trying to best the mark set by the previous fight. Using jabs and right hands to put Coutinho on the defensive early, Bennett quickly took the fight to the ground. He took back control and pounded out his opponent with a series of right hands to the head.

Gordon wins in a “Flash”

SALEM, New Hampshire (July 31, 2009) – Veteran Doug “Flash” Gordon (10-7-0) stunned local favorite Nate “The Future” Lamotte (10-5-0), of Manchester (NH), to win the main event last night in American Steel Cagefighting’s (ASC) inaugural mixed martial arts show at the Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire.

Lamotte tapped out at 2:01 of the first round, when Gordon locked in a guillotine choke. “I didn’t really set it up,” Gordon remarked. “He just gave it to me. It was a good fight, though. He was strong but I had such a will. I came back strong.”

In the co-main event, New York lightweight Pat Audinwood (8-0-0) remained unbeaten, using a triangle choke to force veteran “Mr. Big” Al Buck (6-8-0), former Cage Fury Fighting champion, into submission in the opening round. “It was awesome,” Audinwood said. “I want to thank Al Buck. It’s tough getting good opponents like him.”

Veteran Kevin “The Shaman” Jordan (12-8-0) won the first two rounds and held on for a win by decision in the “Super Fight” against strong-closing puncher, UFC1 pioneer fighter Patrick “The Headhunter” Smith (16-14-0). “I won the first two rounds but in the third he came on,” Jordon explained after the fight. “All respect to Patrick Smith. He’s a pioneer.”
