Lamotte headlines vs. Gordon Friday night in ASC MMA show

SALEM, New Hampshire (July 27, 2009) – Manchester welterweight Nate “The Future” Lamotte headlines Friday night’s (July 31) inaugural American Steel Cagefighting’s (ASC) mixed martial arts show against dangerous Doug “Flash” Gordon (9-7-0) at the Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire.
Lamotte (10-4-0), who is part owner of Team Burgess in Manchester, started learning mixed martial art disciplines when he was eight, transferred it over to combat fighting with the rising popularity of UFC, and has been training to fight in the cage for the past four years.
“The days of specialty fighting is gone,” Lamotte explained. “I do as much all-around MMA to survive in this sport today. I box, three months ago I started Jiu-Jitsu training, and I’ve been submission grappling for 10 years. I’m more experienced on the ground and feel safer fighting there. I can prevent getting knocked out better on the ground and know how to control submissions. But I can pound on the ground, or not.
“Gordon uses kicks. He’s a good stand-up fighter who has gone many 3-round fights. He has a great head-kick that he used to knockout (Gregor) Gracie in the third round after losing the whole fight. He’s explosive and capable of finishing at any point. This is going to be a war of attrition.”
In the co-main event, New York lightweight Pat Audinwood (7-0-0) puts his unbeaten record on the line against veteran “Mr. Big” Al Buck (6-7-0), former Cage Fury Fighting champion.
In the “Super Fight” fans will have an opportunity to watch two UFC veterans in action as UFC1 pioneer fighter Patrick Smith (16-13-0), making his New England debut, takes on super heavyweight Kevin “The Shamnan” Jordan (11-8-0).
Also scheduled to fight on the exciting ASC undercard is middleweight Worcester featherweight Evan Parker (1-0-0) vs. Matt McCusker (0-2), lightweight Kenny Foster (1-0-0) vs. Joe “The Boneyard Pitbull” Dechaves (3-1-0), lightweight Brian “The Butcher” Danner (1-1-0) vs. Chris Foster (3-0-0),; Manchester welterweight Ryan “The Lion” Schieding (3-1-0) vs. Carlos Nieves (3-6-0), and Manchester Adam “Lonewolf” McQuaid makes his pro debut vs. Brian DeMuro (4-6-0).
In a pair of amateur matches, Al Germain Sterling faces Ibrahiem Tody, of Allston (MA),at 145-pounds, while Nashua 160-pounder Tim Bagley faces Dominic Warr, of Boston.
The eight pro fights are scheduled for three, three-minute rounds; fighters and fights are subject to change. BILOXI, Miss. (July 27, 2009) – In “Hook City,” two of boxing’s dominating left hookers, 8-time world champion Roy Jones Jr. and 2-time world champion Jeff Lacy, go to battle on Saturday, August 15 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi to determine the most powerful hooker and the NABO Light Heavyweight Champion. “Hook City,” will be broadcast live on pay-per-view.
At the July 15 press conference to announce “Hook City” at Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, Roy Jones Jr. stated that both fighters will come to fight and “the fight will definitely not go the distance.” That’s been weighing on Lacy’s mind as he returned to his camp in St. Petersburg.
“I’m a puncher and if Roy says it’s not going to go 12, then so be it! With the way I feel right now I agree with Roy, this fight won’t go the distance. I plan on bringing everything into the ring August 15th. The fight will end in a KO and Roy will not hear the last bell.”
Lacy also wants to deliver a message to Roy “Captain Hook” Jones Jr – “Tarver nor Johnson hit as hard as I do!”
“This fight is a huge challenge for me and it is a huge challenge for Roy. He knows that, too,” said Lacy. “I am very motivated by this fight and I’ve been training very hard for Jones and I’ll be coming to Biloxi in the best shape of my life.
Said Lacy trainer Roger Bloodworth, “Both Jeff and Roy know what this fight means for each of them. Jeff is training very hard and will be 100% prepared for Roy Jones Jr. on August 15.”

BEYOND THE GRAVE: Open Letter from KIMO

I’d like to thank all the members of the media, my fans, friends, and especially my family members with regards to their concern and support about me.
I went to sleep late Monday (July 20) and woke-up to my promoter, Ron Kort, shaking me sometime between 12-1 PM/PT on Tuesday, telling me that the media is going crazy over my death, and that he and others had been looking everywhere for me.
I had spent the night with a friend and my phone was turned off like it normally is overnight. I’m used to people spreading weird rumors about me, but I didn’t think this one was funny. So, I blew it off, but when Ron looked at me with that serious face of his, I knew this wasn’t a joke.
I got up and looked on my friend’s computer, read through some of the media reports, and couldn’t believe my eyes. From the time I went to sleep to the time I woke-up, the rumor of me dying had spread like wildfire. All I had done was go to sleep. I kind of felt as important as Michael Jackson, considering the media hoopla. While reading articles, I had to stop and look in the mirror. The overwhelming power of the media almost felt like my death was being predicted.
I was a little taken back and, as I attempted to compose myself, Ron informed me that Brandt Stebbins (New Era Fighting’s Business Development Manager) all day had been dealing with consoling my family and friends over this issue. Ron immediately got on the phone with members of the press and the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner’s office about getting a press release out immediately. As I was piecing the puzzle together, I had various friends yelling at me as if I set this up as a publicity stunt.
I woke-up to being told I was dead and getting yelled at. This wasn’t a fun wake-up. Before I go any further, I want to let everyone know that we are investigating this matter and have a good idea of how it originated, and that NONE of this came from me or anyone around me. I am sorry to all who know me for your grief and am amazed to see that I can make front page news in the press for negative items but not for anything good I have done. The media has always been quick to jump on negative rumors about me without verifying the truth.
I consider myself one of the founding fathers of MMA and an important figure in this industry. I was in this sport before it was a sport. I have seen the many ups-and-downs of this industry and have dedicated the last few years of my life to trying to making a difference by running for California State Athletic Commissioner, trying to get fighters paid what they are worth, and getting fighters more exposure even when they are not fighting. Given my contributions, it is amazing to me that I can get this kind of press on negative items, yet, not on my accomplishments.
In the last few months I have been called a Meth addict in the media and now I am dead. Both items are obviously proven not to be true. The power of the media is strong and it is the responsibility of the media to verify the information they post; it isn’t about being the first one on the scene. TMZ confirmed that I was dead. Well, that’s weird because they did that without a body or autopsy report. In my opinion, TMZ just became the next Inquirer. Why didn’t TMZ just confirm my body was abducted by Aliens?
No offense to TMZ or anyone else, but how about you guys in the media giving me a real chance at making a difference in this industry? Let’s try to use your power for some good. For example, I registered on the Bob Sapp www.FightEngine.com website. If I get enough hits, I will be able to fight whomever the fans want. No one will dictate who I fight except for you, the fans. I will fight whomever you guys want, not what promoters want. You guys decide. I want my last fight to be a freak show of a fight. I want to go out the same way I came in. I came in carrying the cross, but lost my path along the way, and didn’t want to be a hypocrite by carrying the cross if I wasn’t living that life style. I always believe that through Christ Jesus, all things are possible, and I believe Jesus Christ himself is my guiding angel with everything that has happened in my life.
I was pronounced dead and now I am resurrected. This is my second chance and I don’t want to let fans down. I am here to help train fighters for combat in the ring. I will train and walk fighters to the ring at any event. I am here to help fighters get paid their worth, I am here to entertain my fans and the whole MMA community, win or lose, and I am here to help make this fun and enjoyable for everyone. If I hit a certain number of votes on www.FightEngine.com, I will be a main event fighter for one of their scouting events, and you will be the ones to vote about whom you want me to fight. I would appreciate just as much attention as was given to me in these last few days on google.com, yahoo.com and other media sources to also occur on fightengine.com. Show me you guys really believe that I am as exciting to watch fight as everyone tells me to my face and I promise to live the right life style, train hard, and walk to the ring in my last fight with the cross on my back and with a real aggressive fight for the fans to watch. I’ve been known to head-butt guys in the back of the head, slap my opponent in the face, and even in Tank’s case, kiss my opponent on the cheek after I wipe the floor with them.

BOXING’S DEMONS REAR THEIR UGLY HEADS, BUT THE SHOW MUST GO ON

Great Boxing Events On Tap as Vernon Forrest Tragedy Strikes

This is an important and competitive week in the sport of boxing. For many of us, of course, the events will be overshadowed by the brutal, senseless death of one of the sport’s truly decent men, Vernon Forrest. It’s difficult to concentrate on anything else right now, as this – the third tragic death in the boxing nation in 30 days – has all of the boxing people I know in a state of shock.
Perhaps, in a strange way, the documentary on HBO on Saturday night, “Assault in the Ring,” will be airing at an appropriate time. It covers one of the ugliest chapters in boxing history, the June 16, 1983 fight between undefeated prospect Billy Collins, Jr., and journeyman Luis Resto. That fight resulted in the death of a fighter who never would have the opportunity to reach his full potential, either inside or out of the squared circle.
The fight was held in the Madison Square Garden, as the co-feature of Roberto Duran’s challenging WBA champion Davey Moore for the 154lb crown. That night sticks out in my mind, in part because shortly after I decided to retire from amateur boxing, some regional promoters offered me a chance to fight Moore. However, not only was he the last guy in this state I wanted to fight, but my friend Rubin Carter was advising me to quit fighting, and focus on my education, rather than the “ugly business” of boxing. (I’ve been re-reading some of the letters on that topic this afternoon, including one where Rubin wrote, “No matter how successful that you might be in the ring, you would still have to get hurt – for that is what prize-fighting is all about.”
Resto, who was trained by boxing’s infamous Panama Lewis, entered the ring with both plaster of Paris on his hand wraps, and stuffing removed from his gloves As the HBO documentary will show, this allowed him to not only upset Collins, but to cause permanent damage. Eventually, both Resto and Lewis would be convicted and sent to the slammer. Collins would commit suicide nine months after the fight, by driving his car off a cliff.
All the reviews of the HBO special indicate that it will be up to the standard of the best of their documentaries. It will show the best and the worst of boxing: certainly, men like Collins and Forrest are representative of the good, and snakes like Panama Lewis are its dark side.
Now, to this week’s fights. On Thursday, the new VS fights, which are Oscar de la Hoya’s attempt to interest the general sports fans with competitive fights between young, potential contenders, continues. I think that Oscar is providing boxing fans with a valuable service, and I strongly recommend watching these fight cards.
On Friday, there will be ESPN FNF and Shobox. Both cards look very good. I will be in Saratoga Springs that night, watching a good card from a ringside table. For several years, the Saratoga Springs cards have been featured on ESPN FNF. This year, the card appears to be more on the level of the Versus’ cards, and for that reason, I think ESPN will be featuring the card in Hollywood, FL. While it’s too bad that the Pugnacious Promotions were not able to secure a main event on the level that Teddy Atlas has worked to have ESPN cover, it should be an interesting card. The main event features NYC’s Nagy Aguilera challenging Darrel Madison for the NYS heavyweight title. Both are talented young fighters, and by coincidence, each has only one loss – by DQ!
I’ve had the pleasure of watching Aguilera fight twice, including last year on the Saratoga undercard. I think that he has the potential to do very well in the division. While I haven’t seen Madison in person, I’ve seen enough to know that both men are facing their toughest test to date. Look for my report, including photos and interviews, over the weekend.
And finally, Showtime is presenting an outstanding card on Saturday. The co-feature bout between Junior Witter and Devon Alexander is worthy of being a “main event.” Then, Tim Bradley meets Nate Campbell, in what should be an intense fight. Bradley appears to be beginning to peak, and certainly has the potential to mature into a great fighter. But Nate Campbell is a cagey veteran, who will provide Bradley with a serious – and dangerous – test.
Enjoy the fights this week. And consider honoring Vernon Forrest by making a contribution to one of the charities that he supported. Perhaps the people on this site could make a group contribution to the program for adults with mental disabilities that Vernon Forrest strongly believed in supporting.

VERNON FORREST DEATH SHOCKS BOXING WORLD

WASHINGTON, DC – Sunday, July 26 – I am grief stricken to learn of the tragic death of Vernon Forrest. Not only was he my client, he was my friend. He gave me a wonderful opportunity when he asked me to help him tell his story both in and out of the ring beginning in 2001. The journey was terrific as not only was he a great champion, but he was a caring humanitarian who always stood up for what he believed to be the fairness of life.
Most importantly his work outside of the ring, particularly with his established foundation Destiny’s Child, which provided group housing for mentally challenged young adults in the Atlanta area, was the shining light of his life. Seeing him with the kids was the essence of his being and showed me another side of his well-rounded and deeply passionate character. It was my pleasure to help tell his story.
These accomplishments earned him not only the Boxing Writers Association of America 2002 Fighter of the Year award, but also their 2003 Good Guy award, a first ever feat for an active fighter in the history of the organization.
Vernon was a feisty one and always, always, spoke his mind. It was this intense passion for truth and justice that fueled his presence, gave him character and instilled in him a mighty resolve to the end. And yet, he was such a gentleman too, always giving back to those less fortunate and appreciating what others did for him. He would go out of his way to call and thank me profusely for the “coverage” he received. He was a great son and brother to his mother and siblings and a wonderful father to his young son Vernon Jr.
The tragedy of his untimely death is extremely hurtful as boxing has lost another great champion and a long-standing member of our sport’s community. I will miss him dearly and he will forever hold a very special place in my heart. With sympathy to his family, friends and the entire boxing community, I pray for comfort for all of us during this terrible time.
