Robert “NIGHTHAWK” Luna Jr. Scores Impressive Stoppage on ESPN FNF Undrecard!

Cestus Management’s 140pound destroyer Robert “NIGHTHAWK” Luna Jr. thrilled the live crowed at the Don Haskins Convention Center in El Paso, Texas, by brutally stopping the game and vastly experience Tomondre King in the forth round. Luna Jr’s fight was part of the undercard that featured world ranked Antonio Escalante fight Cornilius Locke in the ten round main event.

In the opening round, Luna Jr. came out displaying impressive skills; shooting double and triple jabs which snapped King’s head back. The “NIGHTHAWK” followed his jabs with hard shots to both the head and body leading King to wince in pain. Luna Jr. continued his vicious assaults throughout the second and third rounds systematicaly breaking King down. In the last minute of round three Luna Jr sensing that he could put King away really stepped up the attack, trapping King on the ropes and nailing him with a booming straight right hand to the chin, just as the bell sounded to end the round. King looked like he was glad to hear the bell as he walked back to his corner on very shacky legs.

The “NIGHTHAWK” came out for the forth and final round with thunder in his fists and rattled off a hellacious six punch combination the head and body which seriously hurt king. The thousands of fans in attendance went wild as they sensed the end was near. Luna responded back to the fans and gave them what they wanted and went after King putting together a brutal display of punching power connecting with a right uppercut followed by a left hook to the side of the head which left King defenceless After the last two shots landed the referee had seen King take enough punishment and called a halt to the contest at 1:28 of the round awarding Robert Luna Jr. a knockout victory. The “NIGHTHAWK”s record improves to 5-0 with 3 knockouts.

After the fight, Robert Luna Jr. said, “I feel great and am glad that I was able to give the El Paso fight fans a great and exciting show. I told everybody i would give them a red hot performance and that’s exactly what i did. I hit King with some vicious body shots and overhand rights that really hurt him and really slowed him down. The referee did the right thing and stopped the fight, as King could have got seriously hurt. I still have a very long way to go and i know that this is only the beggining,but i will keep giving my best evreytime i fight.

AFFLICTION MMA LEAGUE SLEEPS WITH THE FISHES: AFFLICTION CLOTHING SLEEPS WITH THE ENEMY

Kevin Iole is reporting that the big top circus that was Affliction MMA is doing more than just shutting down their next show. Iole’s report says Affliction is also making some other serious and puzzling moves in the marketplace. First, it’s been rumored that the league would fold after this show. Lack of a talent pool to draw from would seemingly be the number one reason for the going out of business announcement, and that’s pretty much been highlighted by the Josh Barnett fiasco. If Kimbo is the one man who ruined EliteXC, Barnett is going down in history as the guy who wiped out Affliction single-handedly.

So, maybe it’s not really a shock at all that Affliction’s going under. However, what is a shock is that the clothing brand of the same name is becoming a full-fledged UFC event and fighter sponsor. So, let me get this straight: first Tito makes up with Dana in an unexpected twist, and now Tom Atencio is kissing and making up with the bald dude? What’s next?

In case you doubt the credibility of Iole or ESPN, an official press release from Affliction spells it out in plain English: “Our brand is synonymous with the ‘Live Fast’ approach to life and UFC is the perfect venue for us to market our brand. We have come to an agreement with the UFC which we feel will be the best for the sport and will help the UFC continue delivering the highest caliber of fights.” Eric Foss, Co-Founder of Affliction.

There’s some other scuttlebutt around the net about what could have been and what might lie ahead. Affliction’s fighter contracts are apparently non-binding to begin with and don’t preclude competition in outside leagues. However, it looks like Strikeforce’s once-strong partnership with Affliction may be in danger due to the new UFC collaboration. Chances are, many of the best Affliction fighters will wind up in the UFC now. Only time will tell.

As far as what this all means for the sport, it’s tough to say at the moment. The biggest disappointment I have is that this was something Donald Trump and Oscar De La Hoya were backing, and to have them interested and invested in the sport of MMA was a blessing. If this turns them away from the sport it will be a shame. They can provide the kind of muscle and money that could give the UFC trouble in the long run. Strikeforce may not have a niche for these guys to get involved in, and they may go back to boxing and never look back. Also, it sends a message to other would-be promoters that it’s not worth trying to match or live up to the UFC legend. I hope it doesn’t discourage further development of new and exciting competitors to the UFC, one of which might someday catch on and spread like wildfire. I think the UFC needs the competition to keep on their toes and keep striving to outpace the big rivals.

Whatever happens, rest-assured that right now the UFC brass is celebrating the death of yet another wanna-be. And it won’t be the last.

Affliction Trilogy Cancelled

Seal Beach, California (July 24, 2009) – The highly anticipated fight between Fedor Emelianenko and Josh Barnett at the Affliction Trilogy MMA show has been cancelled. The mega fight was scheduled to take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim on August 1st. The unforeseen license denial of Josh Barnett gave Affliction limited time to find a replacement and adequately promote the new main event.

“Finding an opponent for the number one ranked MMA heavy weight champion in such a short period of time was a huge endeavor and I’m thrilled at the amount of fighters willing to take on this challenge,” said Tom Atencio, vice president of Affliction Entertainment. “But in the end, we just didn’t have enough time to promote a new fight to our standards.”

Affliction is deeply disappointed that the under card is also cancelled through no fault of its own. Affliction stands behind the company’s brands and delivers premium products to the most passionate and loyal customers. Affliction’s first priority is to ensure that all future events live up to the company’s high standards.

KALIESHA WEST BACK IN ACTION!

Moreno Valley, CA — After an 8 month hiatus, female sensation Kay “Wild Wild” West will be stepping back in the ring on a mission to fight for a world title and show women’s boxing that she a force to reckoned with.

On August 1, 2009, West (10-1-0, 2 KO’s) will be squaring off against veteran boxer Rolanda Andrews (8-7-1, 4 KO’s) at the Agua Calienete Casino in Rancho Mirage, California. West is coming off a tough loss but is eager to get back in the ring and show everybody who Kay West really is.

Although West normally fights in the bantamweight division, this bout will take place at 125 lbs. When speaking to Manager and Trainer Juan West, he stated that “Team West has been trying to find a viable opponent at 118 lbs.; however, there are currently no bantamweights that want to get in the ring with Kaliesha. This makes it tough for me as a manager to get her fights, so to keep her active we took the fight with Rolanda.” Contrary to reports that Andrews accepted a challenge from West, Kay is coming to fight and have Rolanda accept the fact that she’ll have her eighth loss by the end of the night.

Speaking over the phone from training camp in Moreno Valley, Kay expressed the following thoughts on her bout with Andrews; “I’m just ready to get back in the ring and do my thing. It’s been 8 months since I’ve been in the ring and I’m ready. I’ve been training hard in the gym these last 8 months so I’m ready physically and mentally to take on Rolanda Andrews. I appreciate the opportunity that Gary Shaw Promotions has given me and I promise to give the boxing fans in my home town a great show.”

This six-round bout will be on the undercard of Showtime Championship Boxing which will be featuring the WBO Light Welterweight Championship between Timothy Bradley and Nate Campbell in the main event. Kimo Leopoldo: The Jesus Christ of the MMA Industry

IRVINE, California (February 2, 2008) – “Jesus Christ took three days to come back from the dead,” a joking Kimo Leopoldo said, “but it only took me a few hours to be resurrected. I am the second resurrection. The funny part, given the time constraints, was I was almost late to my own funeral.”

As one of its pioneers, KIMO has contributed greatly to the MMA community. He jump-started his MMA career in his first pro fight by issuing a beating to immortal Royce Gracie, who won the match but was unable to continue fighting for the championship. KIMO parlayed that debut into a series of fan-friendly fights, including triumphs against notables such as Kazishi Sakuraba, David “Tank” Abbott, and “Bam Bam” Bigalow. KIMO and New Era Fighting have agreed to split all door proceeds with the fighters, at the very least, on a 50/50 basis. Fighters make-up this sport. They help sell themselves to fans, who decide whom they want to see fight. KIMO and New Era Fighting want to pay fighters their true worth, letting money paid by fans to go to fighters, not promoters.”

The Petronelli Gym, where Goody and Pat Petronelli created countless professional boxers from raw kids off the street, is an amazing place to visit. It’s even more humbling to train there. I will be launching a full scale pro career in the next few months and had the good fortune of visiting the third floor steamy gym where I lost about 5 pounds of sweat just going through a typical rookie workout of shadowboxing in front of the mirror and in the ring and then a few rounds on the hardest heavy bag in the place. Pictures of legends are everywhere, and cool little sayings like “When in doubt, jab out,” made me feel welcome since the jab is my favorite punch.
