Kielsa Slays Polley, Eyes Canada’s Top Heavyweights

RAMA, ON – (June 26, 2009) – With a devastating win over veteran Byron Lee Polley under his belt, Canadian Heavyweight champion Greg “The Steel Pole” Kielsa (9-0, 4 KO’s), will have to wade through the current crop of potential title challengers that have suddenly crawled from under the woodwork clamoring for a shot at his crown.

Unable to secure a fight with a ranked Canadian contender, Kielsa stepped into the ring Friday night at Rumble at Rama VIII, at Casino Rama, in Rama, Ontario, against veteran Byron Lee Polley (23-9-1, 11 KO’s) from Saint Joseph, Missouri, in a non-title fight.

Kielsa dropped Polley twice before landing a colossal counter left that planted the game American for a third and final time, prompting referee Rocky Zolnierczyk to wave the fight over at 2:12 of the fourth round.

With the statement win over Polley, Kielsa can now concentrate on defending his title against all comers, a scenario that Kielsa’s manager James Jardine insists is harder than it sounds.

“We’ve been trying to get Greg to defend his belt, and have reached out to most of the contenders, but either we haven’t heard back from them, they outprice themselves with outrageous purse demands, or they want Greg to fight outside Ontario, which doesn’t suit our purposes at all,” Jardine said.

“We tried calling Art Binkowski twice, but his phone must be broken because we never heard back from him. Neven Pajkic wanted $15,000 to fight Greg, which is ludicrous, and we would have fought Jean Francois Bergeron, but they wanted Greg to fight in Quebec, which makes no sense to us because we’re trying to build up Greg here in Ontario.”

“Patrice L’Heureux is also on our radar, but according to his promoter, he’d rather make more money fighting in Quebec than fighting Greg for the title in Ontario.”

With an abundance of new challenges on the horizon for Kielsa, a name from his recent past – Ray Olubowale, the man Kielsa dethroned for the title – has been making headlines recently in an attempt to secure a rematch.

“I read that Ray would be willing to put up $5000 of his purse against $5000 of Greg’s purse as a side bet. I’m very close to Ray and couldn’t do that to him, I mean that would be practically his entire purse,” Jardine said.

“What puzzles me about Ray begging for a rematch was that it took him 14 months to make his only defense of the title. Now he’s acting as if Greg is the one hiding. With Ray it’s a case of been there, done that.”

“I’ve read that people are looking down their noses at Byron Polley as an opponent for Greg,” Jardine said.

“But when you look at who some of these other guys fought in their tenth pro fight, Polley is a certified killer in comparison.”

Don Gotti gets his long-awaited revenge on his former tag team partner from “The Dream Police” “Cookie Cutter” Chris Gambino. Because this match was so long in the making, Commissioner William Sentowski’s wanted to make things special, appointing a special guest referee and special guest timekeeper for the match. Of course, it’s surely just coincidental that Gotti is a member of Commissioner Sentowski’s Cabinet and that the special guest referee is Mr. Ness (aka Jamie “the Weasel”), and the special guest timekeeper is none other than Commissioner William W. Sentowski. No, all conincidental, to be sure. To say that Gambino has the odds stacked against him would be an understatement.

“Diamond” Dave DeMone vs ACW Hall of Famer, “Straight Edge” Eric Hammers

-Demone has been referring to himself as a “future” Hall of Famer, which surely can’t sit too well with ACW co-founder Hammers. Now it’s time to see what Demone truly has in the ring. Hammers knows all the tricks, and has certainly been around the block a few times. But Demone is crafty, and has “Weasel” managing him.

Mickey McCoy vs Steve Sadist
-Sadist, who recently made his ACW debut, has shown he means business in ACW, taking on former ACW Champion “Cadillac” Nick Colucci in his first outing. Then he followed it up by going after big Jett Bennett, who has battled no less a competitor than Sam Hayne in the past. Now, Mickey McCoy wants to see if he can take down this pain-lover a few pegs. Will the fighting Irishman have what it takes to defeat the sadist? It’s not like McCoy is just some preliminary wrestler, he’s one half of the NWA Wisconsin Tag Team Champions, and both McCoys have proven they are not “just” tag team wrestlers. Not to mention that neither ne of the McCoys (nor Sadist for that matter!) would win a contest for best personality. With a guy like Sadist, even when you win, you lose, simply because Sadist wants to make sure that win or lose, all that matters is inflicting pain.

American History Next (Steve Stone/Hardcore Craig) recruit their longtime pal, Brandon Blaze to compete in six-man tag team action agasint The Urban Assault Team (Mace Morgan/Jared Johnsonville) and their partner, Chris Black.
-Former ACW Tag Team Championship contendors against former NWA Wisconsin Champions. Both teams are very dangerous, and with a third man on each team, that only increases the damage that both teams are capable of. Although Craig and Stone might seem like brawlers on the surface, they are capable of a surprising amount of scientific wrestling, as are The Urban Assault Team, and the UAT proved also that they can endure impressive amounts of pain, as displayed in the 3-team tables, ladders, and chairs match. Look for a very physical matchup.

Mason Quinn vs “Canadian Made” Brandon Haze
-Big Brandon Haze has shown a willingness to take on all comers, having recently battled the demon, Sam Hayne at NWA Wisconsin Showdown at the Wrangler Inn. Now, he will up his game again, this time challenging the former NWA Wisconsin Heavyweight Champion. Both men are equal in size and use a lot of power moves. How will Haze stack up against Quinn move for move? It’s time for Haze to really step up his game so he can be considered for title matches.

Speaking of title matches, yeah, we got ’em. Jerry Stylz puts his ACW X-Division Championship on the line against Thomas Walton III and “Mr. Canada” Jason Reiley in triple threat action. Stylz’s first Championship reign in ACW, and he is looking to prove he’s more than mouth. The trouble is, that big mouth of his might just get him intro trouble against former X-Division Champion, TW3. Also, Reiley is an x-factor, as well. Will his countryman Haze be around to watch Reiley’s back and insure a victory? Also, what will Stylz do to insure he stays champ? Our guess is anything that he can. Don’t underestimate Stylz, though. He may get a lot of flack, but he is a student of the game, and knows what to do and when to do it.

Dinn T. Moore puts his ACW Heavyweight Championship on the line against not one, not two, but THREE other contendors: “Cadillac” Nick Colucci, Dysfunction & Justin Dredd! Colucci and Dysfunction are both former ACW Heavyweight Champions, and Dredd is a former X-Division Champion, and most recently, at NWA Wisconsin Showdown at the Wrangler Inn, Dredd challenged NWA Midwest Heavyweight Champion, Silas Young, proving he belongs in this crowd of champion challengers.

NWA Wisconsin Heavyweight Champion Shane Hills puts his belt up in an ACW Legends Match against “The Dog of War” Kujo. Kujo has returned to the ring in ACW, so it’s time to see if he has some ring rust. He’s certainly not fooling around in his comeback, heading straight to the top of the NWA Wisconsin ladder with his challenge of Hills. Plus, Kujo is as fearless as Hills himself, having had a long and brutal feud with none other than Sam Hayne. Hills isn’t exactly a slouch, though, and will hit every bit as hard. He battled back against former champ Mason Quinn, and you can bet that Hills isn’t ready to lighten his luggage load by 10 pounds yet.

BILOXI, Miss. (June 25, 2009) – “Ultimate Chaos,” the star-studded mixed martial arts Pay-Per-View event, presented by Prize Fight Promotions and Fight Force International, explodes Saturday night live from the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi.

The much-anticipated main event features two of the most popular and entertaining combat fighters in the world, former WWE superstar Bobby Lashley (3-0-0) and K1 and PRIDE living legend Bob “The Beast” Sapp (10-4-1), in a battle of super heavyweights.

LAS VEGAS (June 24, 2009) – The nominees for The World’s Greatest Ever Boxer global fan vote were announced today by Greatest Ever Enterprises.

On-line voting at www.GreatestEver.com will allow boxing fans from around the world to select the greatest boxer in each of the original eight weight classes, Heavyweight, Light heavyweight, Middleweight, Welterweight, Lightweight, Bantamweight, Featherweight and Flyweight, highlighted by the all-time pound-for-pound “Greatest Ever”.

A nominations committee of boxing experts lead the debate and selection of the boxers. The announcement of the process was twice delayed as the jury debated the various merits of the fighters, their records and achievements. Categories were set at 10 nominees per division, with 12 being nominated for the blue-ribbon category of Heavyweight.

The nominations committee was comprised of Thomas Hauser (boxing journalist and award-winning Muhammad Ali biographer), Al Bernstein (broadcaster and boxing analyst), Colin Hart (UK’s leading boxing reporter), Jean-Philippe Lustyk (broadcaster and head of boxing for pan-European sports channel Eurosport) and Ron Borges (boxing journalist and Hall of Fame committee member).

JURY NOTES

The categories above are the eight original weight categories. Strawweights have been included in the Flyweight category. Super Middleweight has been included in Light Heavyweight (hence Joe Calzaghe’s inclusion in that category rather than Middleweight). Many fighters fought and won titles at a number of different weights. As far as possible they have been nominated in the division that they made their biggest impact. Fighters have not been nominated on the basis of whether they would beat another fighter in that division, though this is of course a consideration. More important has been their overall record, who they fought at the time and the impact they made on the boxing world, and indeed the world around them.

Now the debate is open to the public.

JURY COMMENTS

The debate amongst the judges was passionate, and sometime furious, concerning the nominations of the individual fighters. While the fighter nominations in many instances were unanimous, there was significant disagreement in some key areas that lead to more discussion and extra balloting. The final nominees were selected by majority decision.

“Just by our opinions it’s obvious this will be a lot of fun. The panel has had quite a spirited debate on this – I think that’s foreshadowing of what’s to come with the public,” said Al Bernstein.

“How you measure greatness is not just a question of skills and records,” said Jean Philippe Lustyk. “There is more to being a great fighter. Similarly this is about the world and it is not just about the great North American fighters. We must remember the geographical spread and recognise the other champion fighters from around the world. This is part of boxing’s greatness.”

Ron Borges commented : “This was tough. Some good names didn’t make it. Nothing stirs up debates faster than my guy was better than your guy. There are actually people in the States who believe Roy Jones, Jr. was better than Sugar Ray Robinson. Ugh!!! John L Sullivan was a controversial heavyweight nominee. I had him in my picks originally and then took him off, then put him back on and took him off. I then thought again but took him off. After an appeal from another jury member I decided I had no quarrel with putting him back on. Then I decided he doesn’t belong on a “greatest” list unless we’re talking about greatest street fighter. The guy could not box. So I took him off my list a 4th time! The guy has staying power because he made the final cut and got nominated.”

“I don’t think that there are any terrible omissions. But there was, and will remain, disagreement among the jurors,” said Thomas Hauser.

GREATEST EVER WEEKEND OF EVENTS

Boxing fans attending the festivities will be able to celebrate, up close and personal, the achievements of the World’s Greater Ever Boxers. A three-day boxing spectacular is planned October 2-4 at the Paris Las Vegas, commencing that Friday with an official welcome reception and official weigh in for the following evening’s professional boxing show, presented by Sterling Promotions, and featuring Team USA versus Team Europe, capped by an exclusive after party. The event culminates Sunday with The Greater Ever black-tie awards dinner, featuring some of the greatest boxers ever, as well as world-class entertainment, and then an exclusive after party.

The Retired Boxers Foundation (RBF) is the official charity for The World’s Greatest Ever Boxer. RBF assists retired professional boxers in the transition from their days in the ring to dignified retirement, helping those suffering from alcohol and substance abuse problems, homelessness and effects of pugilistic dementia.
