The 37-year-old Sriyapai, born in Japan and living in Rancho Cucamonga, California, is fighting an opponent 16 years younger in what “The Bull” is calling the fight of his life. “I’m expecting a stand-up fight,” he said, “but every time I crack and opponent they want to take me down. That’s why I’ve been working hard on my ground game and takedown defense. I’m 100-percent confident in my stand-up. Horodecki is a tough kid. He comes straight forward and has good conditioning and stamina. His ground game is a little suspect but he’ll still try and take me down. I’m excited to be fighting on a show like this and I plan on winning the crowd over.

“I know a lot of people will be watching on pay-per-view and I want to dominate and win. If it goes to decision I want all of the scorecards, every round, to be mine. He’s a tough kid and well known, so I need to dominate every round. If I finish it, I finish it. This is a very important fight for me, the most important of my career.”

Three-time UFC heavyweight challenger Pedro “The Rock” Rizzo (16-8-0) faces Dutch knockout artist Gilbert “The Hurricane” Yvel (35-13-1) in the co-feature, while former King Of The Cage and Gladiator Challenge lightweight champion Javier “Showtime” Vasquez (12-2-0) takes on The Ultimate Fighter 4 star Din “Dinyero” Thomas (24-8-0) in a featured match.

Fans will get to witness Pound for Pound King Manny Pacquiao receives his much deserved Fighter of the Year award. Joe Calzaghe will be making his first American appearance since announcing his retirement as he picks up the 2008 Manager of the Year.

Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez will be honored for their classic third bout and will be awarded for the Fight of The Year.

Freddie Roach will receive Trainer of the Year honors for the third time.

ShoBox commentator Steve Farhood won the prestigious Walker Award for “Long and Meritorious Service.” It’s Farhood’s second major award. In 2002 he was voted winner of the Sam Taub Award for “Excellence in Broadcast Journalism.” This year’s Taub recipient is HBO’s Harold Lederman. Lederman, known as boxing’s unofficial judge, was a 2005 award winner in the “Good Guy” category. The “Good Guy”Award, named after Marvin Kohn, will be bestowed upon Alan Hopper of Don King Productions. The closest vote was for the Crawford Award, awarded for “perseverance in overcoming adversity.” It was a tie between renowned journalist George Kimball and former world champion Genaro Hernandez. Both will be honored.

Earlier, the BWAA announced that Norm Frauenheim of Arizona has won the 2008 Nat Fleischer award for “Excellence in Boxing Journalism,” and Leonard Gardner, Larry Merchant, and the late John Lardner have been named as winners of A.J. Liebling Awards.

Tony “The Tornado” Penecale came all the way up to Beantown from Philly with his Dad, cousin and uncle to take in a thrilling Red Sox game on June 7, 2009 and show off his new Rocky Marciano Foundation shirt.

While Tony was here we decided to do an intro for our radio show interview this coming Thursday with a friend of local Brockton, Massachusetts legend Rocky Marciano (Hank Tartaglia). Read more about Hank below, but for now enjoy the video we made (sorry about all the background noise):

Editor’s Note: Hank doesn’t actually live in Rocky’s old house right now (I messed that up), but he did grow up living in Rocky’s neighborhood just a street away from Rocky’s Dover Street residence. Mark Casieri, seen in the video at the bottom with the Rocky Marciano Foundation shirt on (just like Tony’s), is the one who actually lives in Rocky’s old home.

The low-lit bar Henry “Hank” Tartaglia tends faithfully is found just through the back door of George’s Cafe in Brockton, Massachusetts, and everywhere you look you are forced to realize the historical significance of where you are.

Super sharp black-and-white snapshots of Rocky Marciano’s merciless right hook against Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13th round of their famous fight are plastered throughout the bar in key spots. It seems like that one punch is covered from at least 7 different angles on the walls of George’s Cafe.

Then there are the other still shots of the follow-up left in the same Walcott fight, and there’s a few angles of that shot, too. If you take the time to stroll slowly down each wall and look at the clusters of pictures from a bygone era in American boxing, you get the feeling that just about everybody does when they first learn about the legend: Rocky was just a regular guy. Perhaps this is why he had such great appeal as an American Heavyweight and a World Champion.

There is a history you just can’t get out of watching the old videos of any fighter. Rocky Marciano’s history plays out on the wall’s of George’s in the snapshots taken by the pioneers of sports photography with the best equipment of their day. Back then, the internet was just a dream and video was still light years away from catching up to the detail provided by these crisp black and white shots taken from ringside. Then there are the character shots, the photos of Rocky in the gym; Rocky wearing a pair of absolutely tattered old gloves given to him by Skip Sergio; a shirtless Rocky holding a huge baseball bat in one huge palm out by his side; Rocky with all the neighborhood kids; Rocky with “The Splendid Splinter” Ted Williams; and even a select few pictures of Rocky in his retirement.

During an age when America was most passionate about the arrival of the daily newspaper, Rocky was a household name in New England and America. Before mixed martial arts was even a brain fart in any Gracie’s head, Rocky was thrilling crowds with gutsy and skillful exhibitions of iron will and pure punching power. It would be hard to find a trainer today who would encourage his own students to emulate Rocky’s low handed, stalking, clubbing style. Yet, Rocky managed to pull it off and more.

As long-time friend of the Marciano family Hank Tartaglia recalls that Rocky managed to knock a lot of guys out with the same right hand that baseball scouts didn’t consider to be good enough for him to make it to the bigs. After a brief stint in a catcher’s role with the Chicago Cubs organization, Rocky was told his throw to second base was not quite accurate enough to make the cut. Rocky would often haunt the Brockton baseball fields blasting line drives and fly balls to the younger kids. “He was a real good baseball player,” said Tartaglia, who shagged Rocky’s hits from time to time himself and lived just one street away from the Marciano family home. “Everyone hung around the park. We were all very close in that neighborhood. All the Italian kids hung together.”

Carano and Cyborg, the consensus two best female fighters in the world, will be the first women in MMA history to headline a major MMA fight card. In addition, they will fight for the first STRIKEFORCE 145-pound Female Championship.

“I’m really excited to be coming back and to have a new home with STRIKEFORCE,” said the 27-year-old Carano, whose combination of stunning looks and athleticism have cemented her role as the face of women’s MMA. In a Yahoo! online poll that named the “Top 10 Influential Women of 2008,” Carano ranked fifth, placing ahead of First Lady Michelle Obama and famed journalists Katie Couric and Barbara Walters.

HEAT on July 11th is shaping up to be one of the best fight cards assembled in the UK this year, as once again Ultimate Challenge continue to raise the standard in match making.

The main event is rapidly being talked about as one of the great Heavyweight encounters as the Algerian self made millionaire and owner of London’s iconic Vendome club, Kiane Sabet faces the reputed hardest man in Kent, Ben Smith. Jake Bostwick versus Alex Reid is another great UK1 match up that has the potential to be an out and out war. Both men have devastating striking power and both will be keen to put on a show. Both fighters have great supporters and will raise the roof with their vocal support when both these men enter the cage.

Jack Mason will be looking to continue his winning streak against the tough, Dorlan O’Mally. Jack is rapidly becoming a fighter to watch as his powerhouse ground n pound style seems unstoppable, but will face a tough test against O’Mally. O’Mally has been in against the likes of Tom Watson and Ed Smith and will certainly be no pushover. This will be a hard hitting contest.

Ricky Andrews versus Dyson Roberts will prove to be an intriguing battle as Ricky makes his comeback after a horrific knee injury sustained while training. Ricky will be looking to start his comeback with a victory, but will face a resilient opponent in Dyson Roberts. Dyson, who came through the “Fighting Hurts” reality show, has proven himself to be a more than capable fighter with some great victories under his belt. This could be fight of the night with both fighters having a point to prove.

Chris Greig versus Shahid Hussain will be a great Middleweight contest. Chris has dropped down from Light Heavyweight, where he feels his powerhouse style will be better suited and will look to start his first fight at this weight with a decisive victory. Shahid Hussain will be looking to get back to winning ways after his loss at the Relentless event to Jack Mason. Both men are powerfully built and this will be a bruising encounter as each man will look to impose themselves early on in the fight.

Ashley Pollard will face an awesome test as he once again takes on last year’s winner of Britain’s strongest man, in the shape of Oli Thompson. Ashley comes off the back of a loss in his Grand Prix bout against Saieed Gholamie, but still showed the determination and skills that make him one of the brightest young Heavyweight stars in the UK. Ashley will be looking to avenge his defeat against Oli Thompson, while Oli will be looking to make it 2-0 against the young prodigy.

Luke Smith versus John Joe Ellis is rapidly becoming the most talked fight in the Grand Prix. The trash talk on the various internet mediums has been red hot as the build up to this fight reaches boiling point. Both men have devastating hands and knockout power that can be delivered in a split second. John Joe is coming off the back of his devastating 9 second demolition of Marcus Thomas, while Luke scored a decisive victory over Dragos Voiculescu with a textbook rear naked choke. Wesley Johnson will be facing a late replacement in the shape of Ale Harvey, after the unfortunate pull out of Jamaine Watkins. Both these fighters have an unbeaten record and will look to maintain it.

Jamaine Facey versus Nigel Whittear will be a match up between two men that are comfortable, whether the fight stays standing or goes to the floor. Jamaine will be looking to bounce back from his disappointing loss to Michael Pastou at the last event, where he showed great striking ability, in what was a three round war. Nigel Whitear also suffered his last loss to Michael Pastou and will be looking to re establish himself as one of the leading Welterweights in the UK.

Max Henchey versus Giorgio Andrews will be a great Featherweight match between two tough opponents, who will give it everything in the cage. The London Shootfighter, Andrews will be looking to cement his place as one of the leading Featherweights in the UK, while, Henchey will be looking to bounce back from a loss at his last outing.

Siaca calls out Mundine

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Former WBA super middleweight champion Manny Siaca is offering present IBO title-holder Anthony Mundine an opportunity to avenge one of his three pro losses, even if it means fighting Mundine again in his hometown of Sydney.

Five years ago, Siaca captured the WBA super middleweight belt from Mundine, by way of 12-round decision, in Sydney.

The 33-year-old Siaca (22-6, 19 KOs) said his experiment as a light heavyweight is in the past and he’s ready to take on Mundine (36-3, 23 KOs) again. “Since I beat him,” the Puerto Rican boxer said, “he’s fought nobody, only bums, other than Mikkel Kessler, who beat him, too. Mundine is fooling the people of Australia. In 2007, his people talked about him fighting me but they thought it was too risky. Danny Green pulled out of a fight against me, too. I beat Mundine in his backyard and I’ll do it again.”
