Shumenov’s TV Debut in North America on Tap

LAS VEGAS (June 2, 2009) – The North American television debut of light heavyweight sensation Beibut Shumenov starts tomorrow and continues this summer with airings of the taped May 9th show from Shumenov’s hometown of Chimkent, Kazakhstan.

2004 Kazakhstan Olympian Shumenov (8-0, 6 KOs), 2008 WBC Asian Boxing Council Organization’s Boxer of the Year, captured the vacant IBA World title with an impressive fourth-round stoppage of former two-time world champion Byron “Slama from Bama” Mitchell (27-5-1, 20 KOs). Shumenov also successfully defended his WBO Asia Pacific, WBC Asian Boxing Council and PABA Interim titles.

Already rated No. 6 by the WBO No. 7 by the WBA, and No. 16 by the WBC, the 25-year-old Shumenov has defeated two former world champions, Mitchell and Montell Griffin, in addition to world title challenger Epifanio Mendoza.

Also scheduled to air on the show promoted by KZ Event Productions, owned by Beibut and Chingis Shumenov, are former IBF light middleweight Roman “Made In Hell” Karmazin’s (39-3-1, 24 KOs) fourth-round knockout of Luis “Tyson” Augusto Dos Santos (24-16, 20 KOs); former WBO light welterweight champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley’s (34-11, 20 KOs) victory by eighth-round TKO versus former Brazilian lightweight champion Sidney Siqueira (12-4-1, 7 KOs); four-time Uzbekistan National amateur champion Gayrat Ahmedov’s (11-0-1, 7 KOs) dramatic KZ Event Productions debut, putting WBC Latino and Brazilian title-holder Luzimar “Tiger of Itacre” Gonzaga (25-5, 20 KOs) to sleep in the opening round.

“We’re all excited that North American boxing fans will have an opportunity to watch our show and see Beibut and Gayrat in action,” Chingis said. “We’re planning our next show and also zeroing in on a world title fight, hopefully, against (WBO champ Zsolt) Erdei. WBO#9 Minto faces Seldon for WBO NABO Title!

WBO#9, WBA#15 heavyweight contender Brian “The Beast” Minto (33-2 21kos) will meet former WBA heavyweight champ Bruce Seldon (40-7) for the interim WBO NABO heavyweight title on Friday August 14th at Pullman Park in Butler, Pennsylvania. A winner of six straight and 15 of his last 16, Minto will also put his WBA Fedecentro heavyweight title up for stake. Seldon, a winner of two straight and five of his last six, has claimed 36 knockout victims in his 40 professional wins. The show will be Minto’s second appearance at the historic Pullman Park baseball stadium. Last July 2nd, Minto Ko’d John Poore (20-2) in the main event on ESPN2’s Wednesday Night Fights before several thousand spectators. Promoted by Beatdown Promotions, the 8 bout card will begin at 7pm. Team Ruiz officially files petition with WBA demanding purse bid for Valuev-Ruiz III

LAS VEGAS (June 1, 2009) – Team Ruiz has filed an official petition with the World Boxing Association asking that heavyweight Ruslan Chagaev be stripped of his “Champion In Recess” status and demanding an immediate purse bid for Valuev-Ruiz III to be held by August 30 for the World Boxing Association heavyweight title.

Two-time WBA heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs) is the WBA mandated Official Challenger for WBA heavyweight champion Valuev.

Team Ruiz’ petition stated, “As you are aware Ruslan Chagaev has been medically disqualified from participation in the fight against Valuev. According to the express ruling of the WBA on this issue he must accordingly be stripped of any title and Valuev must be ordered to fight John Ruiz, the Official Challenger before August 30, 2009.

“For the record John Ruiz is ready, willing and able to fulfill his obligations as the Official Challenger within the time dictated by Championship regulations, and he demands that no decision regarding this issue be made unless he has an opportunity to be heard by the Championship Committee, unless it is to order a purse bid for the bout between he and Valuev no later than August 30, 2009.”

Relating to Chagaev’s obligation to fight Valuev: (par. C, p. 3)

“If Chagaev should incur another injury or other impediment that would prevent him from defending against the Champion, he will vacate whatever title he may hold and will be correspondingly lowered in his ranking.”

“I’m ready to go,” Ruiz said. “I’ve been in the gym working hard because I knew something like this would happen. The WBA has to stand by its rules and order a purse bid for Valuev to fight me for the WBA heavyweight title and strip Chageav. This is the third time he hasn’t been able to fight for one reason or another. In baseball he’d be out. How many chances is the WBA going to give this guy? I wish they’d let the fighters in-line for a title shot know, so we’d all have a better idea about when somebody else will be fighting for that title.”

“According to the WBA’s specific rulings,” Ruiz attorney and advisor Anthony Cardinale explained, “it’s over for Chagaev as ‘Champion In Recess.’ Chagaev was medically unable to engage in this fight (vs. Valuev) and the WBA ruling stated he would lose his status if he was unable to fight – no excuses. The WBA mandatory rules revert back and Valuev has to make a mandatory defense by August 30, 2009. The WBA heavyweight title can’t be held hostage. It’s obvious that unsafe medical regulations in Germany regarding Chagaev’s medical condition do not apply anywhere else.”

DISTINCT LOCAL FLAVOR TO BIGGEST MMA FIGHT CARD IN HISTORY OF ST. LOUIS SATURDAY AT SCOTTRADE CENTER

Finney, Woodley, Woods, Benson, Cochran, Ventimiglia, DeRousse, Lopes and Wade Will Appear On Excellent Lawler-Shields Undercard

NEW YORK (June 1, 2009) – Ten area fighters, including “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler of Granite City, Ill., who will face San Francisco’s Jake Shields in the highly anticipated main event, are scheduled to compete on Strikeforce’s sensational mixed martial arts event this Saturday, June 6, at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

The biggest MMA event in the history of the Gateway City also will include nine other Midwest fighters. They will be featured during a five-bout, non-televised undercard that will precede a five-fight telecast on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

Doors at the Scottrade Center will open for Strikeforce: “Lawler vs. Shields” at 6:30 p.m. CT this Saturday. The first non-televised preliminary bout will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets, priced from $30, are on sale at the Scottrade Center box office, all Ticketmaster locations (800-745-3000), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com), and Strikeforce’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).

Four of the 10 fighters on the undercard hail from St. Louis – Jesse Finney, Tyron Woodley, Pat Benson and Dave Cochran. There is also a fighter from Columbia (Lucas Lopes), one from St. Genevieve (Booker DeRousse), one from St. Peters (James Wade), one from Granite City (Salvoder Woods) and one from Edwardsville, Ill., by way of Wood River, Ill. (Scott Ventimiglia).

The undefeated Finney (3-0) will be opposed by fellow unbeaten Josh Bumgarner (7-0) at 175 pounds, Woodley will meet Woods at 170 pounds, Gateway City competitors Benson and Cochran will collide at 155 pounds, Ventimigilia faces Lopes at 185 pounds and DeRousse takes on Wade at 205 pounds.

Finney, a graduate of Affton High in St. Louis, has been victorious in all his fights in the first round, including a 20-second knockout over John Price in his last start on Aug. 22, 2008.

The owner and head instructor of his own gym, Finney’s MMA in St. Louis, the six-foot, 34-year-old won his other two starts by submission – one in 1:20, the other in 2:45.

Before turning to MMA, Finney went unbeaten as a kickboxer (23-0) and is 8-2 as a pro boxer. Finney also is the head coach of the St. Louis Enforcers of Chuck Norris’s World Combat League.

Bumgarner, of Waterloo, Iowa, is a highly skilled kickboxer with strong Jiu-Jitsu skills. He is making his 2009 debut after winning his last start on Oct. 25, 2008.

Woodley, the 11th of 13 children raised by his mother, was born, raised and lives in St. Louis. Making a go of it on the tough streets wasn’t easy and he underwent his fair share of growing pains. Due in large part to wrestling, however, and, now, MMA, Woodley has turned his life around dramatically.

“My mother raised all of us, and she never complained. She did everything. My goal has always been to buy her a house, and that is still my goal,’’ Woodley said.

The hard-nosed Woods, a stand out from Granite City, Ill, registered a 0:44, first-round submission over Ryan Scheeper on April 11, 2009, during Battle @ The Bend III in Illinois.

Benson, an instructor at Finney’s gym, has been into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for 15 years and holds a black belt in the martial art. He is known for putting relentless pressure on opponents.

Cochran, who’s making his 2009 debut, has won two of his last three starts. A lethal striker, he is unaccustomed to putting in a full night’s work, having gone the distance in only four of his 34 fights. Ten of his 16 victories have come by submission.

Ventimiglia has won three straight and six of seven. The submission master has forced 11 of his 12 victims to tap out. The world-class Lopes has been triumphant in three of his last four.

DeRousse will try to put into play his vicious slams and powerful ground and pound offensive in an effort to regain his winning ways in what will be his 2009 debut. Wade has won two straight and three of four.

In other fights on SHOWTIME’s five-fight telecast, Arlovski, a former UFC champion, will take on the undefeated, hard-hitting Rogers in an Affliction sponsored heavyweight bout, exciting, power-punching Scott “Hands Of Steel’’ Smith will take on talented, Cesar Gracie black belt Nick Diaz, knockout artist Phil “The New York Bad Ass’’ Baroni will meet Joe “Diesel’’ Riggs in a welterweight scrap and ex-UFC belt-holder and two-time NCAA Division I national wrestling champion Kevin “The Monster” Randleman will face “Iron’’ Mike Whitehead in a light heavyweight matchup.

The fights are scheduled for three-3-minute rounds, with the exception of Arlovski-Rogers, which is slated for five, 5-minute rounds.

Pro-Am boxing card to rock historic Plymouth, MA “Brawl At The Hall,” June 12 at Memorial Hall

PROVIDENCE (June 1, 2009) – Pro boxing returns June 12 to Plymouth as Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES) presents a rare pro-am card, “Brawl At The Hall,” at historic Plymouth Memorial Hall.

“Brawl At The Hall” is the second of four shows in “The Radisson Hotel Plymouth Harbor Fight Series,” scheduled in 2009 at Plymouth Memorial Hall and exclusively promoted by CES.

Iraqi War veteran Chris Traietti (7-2, 4 KOs), a light heavyweight from Quincy, is in the 6-round main event. U.S. Navy veteran and Plymouth firefighter, light heavyweight Benny “The Hornet” Lescarbeau (3-0, 3 KOs), is back fighting in front of his hometown fans.

Also on the undercard in 4-round bouts are light middleweight Aleksandra Magdziak Lopes (0-1), a Plymouth High graduate now fighting out of Marshfield, and a pair of pro-debuting boxers from Cape Cod, super middleweight Paul Gonsalves and heavyweight Jessie Barboza. Gonsalves, fighting out of Harwich, is a 2-time Southern New England Golden Gloves champion, while Barboza, of Barnstable, is a 3-time New England Golden Gloves title holder. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Five amateur matches featuring some of the area’s top non-professionals are also scheduled on the “Brawl At The Hall” card.
