Team Ruiz demanding purse bid for Valuev-Ruiz III

LAS VEGAS (May 29, 2009) – Upon today’s announcement that Valuev-Chagaev II has been canceled, Team Ruiz is demanding an immediate purse bid in order for Valuev-Ruiz III to be held by August 30 for the World Boxing Association heavyweight title.
Two-time World Boxing Association heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs) lost to Valuev last August 30th in Berlin by 12-round split decision. Team Ruiz petitioned the WBA for a variety of reasons regarding the conduct of the fight and in response to the appeal, the WBA declared Ruiz as its mandatory challenger for the winner of the Valuev-Chagaev title fight scheduled for this weekend in Finland.
“Enough is enough,” Ruiz said. “Chageav has never fulfilled his obligation to fight mandatory defenses. German promoters have gotten their way with the WBA in the past, but the WBA has to do the right thing – strip him of his title and drop him from the ratings. I knew something would happen because he is either injured or it’s something else where he doesn’t fight. That’s why I’ve been working so hard at the gym in Las Vegas to get ready. I’m glad that this situation will finally be settled and I’ll be fighting for the title.”
Team Ruiz believes the consistent rumor that Chagaev has Hepatitis B was the reason he failed his medical exam, noting that since the rumors began, Chagaev hasn’t fought outside of his home-base in Germany.
“We believe Chageav’s ‘Champion in Recess’ is now completely meaningless,” Ruiz’ advisor Anthony Cardinale explained. “He last fought for the WBA title in April of 2007 and he owed Valuev a mandatory when he got hurt last year. Now this has occurred and he should be stripped of that title and removed from its rankings. If the rumors are true, where can he fight outside of Germany, and how was he even allowed to fight there? Valuev hasn’t defended his title since August 30, 2008 and John is the mandatory challenger.
“The WBA ruled that, no excuses, Chageav had to engage in this fight or he would be stripped of his ‘Champion In Recess’ title. The WBA is legally obligated to follow its ruling in this regard. Without this ‘Champion In Recess’ nonsense, Valuev is obligated by WBA rules to defend the title against the mandatory challenger – John is the WBA mandatory challenger — before August 30, 2009, which is why we’re asking the WBA to set-up an immediate purse bid so the fight can occur in a timely fashion. ”

PATRICK MCELLIGOTT PREVIEWS THIS WEEKEND’S BIGGEST BOUTS

SATURDAY – at Helsinki, Finland – 12 rounds, WBA heavyweight title: Ruslan Chagaev (25-0-1, 17 KOs) vs. Nikolay Valuev (50-1, 34 KOs); Lamon Brewster (35-4, 30 KOs) vs. Juho Haapoja (9-2-1, 7 KOs).
SATURDAY – at Hollywood, Florida (HBO) – 12 rounds, WBC welterweight title: Andre Berto (24-0, 19 KOs) vs. Juan Urango (21-1-1, 16 KOs); 12 rounds, welterweights: Kermit Cintron (30-2-1, 27 KOs) vs. Alfredo Angulo (15-0, 12 KOs
HBO will be providing boxing fans with one of the best cards of the year this weekened. Before we look at that, however, it’s worth taking a moment to review the Helsinki bouts.
Ruslan Chagaev and Nikolay Valuev will finally have their return match, to determine the WBA championship. Chagaev, who won their first fight in April. 2007, was at the time one of the most promising heavyweight prospects. However, due to health-related issues, he has been largely inactive, fighting only once in both ’08 and ’09. At 6’ 1″, 229 lbs, and with a 74 ” reach, he is relatively small for today’s heavyweight division. But he has shown both ring generalship and good power when he fights. At age 30, he could still be a major factor in the division, if he becomes an active participant.
Valuev, 35, has won 4 fights since losing to Chagaey. At 7’, 320 lbs, and with an 75″ reach, he is the definition of a “super heavyweight” in size, if not in talent. There are inevitable comparisons made to former heavyweight champion Primo Carnera; however, like the “giant” Carnera, Valuev does have some talent..
Chagaev is probably going to take another decision. If so, he would probably have a better chance in a future match against one of the Klitschko brothers.
Lamon Brewster continues his once promising career against Finland’s unranked heavyweight, Juho Haapoja, who is coming off a TKO victory over an 0-5 opponent. At age 35, Brewster should retire.
The main attraction this weekend is a welterweight double-header, featuring four intense punchers. In the co-feature, Kermit Cintron meets Alfredo Angulo. Cintron, 29, is 5’ 11″, with a 74-inch reach. He is a powerful puncher, with the ability to take most opponents out early. More, he has good boxing skills, and can either outbox an opponent, or score late-round TKOs.
His only two loses are to Margarito, in 2005 and 2008. In both fights, after making a quick start, Cintron appeared intimidated by the equally tall and rangy Margarito’s counter punching. He was TKOed in 5, then KOed in 6; in both fights, it appeared that Cintron was giving up. After the recent “glove-loading” controversy involving Margarito in his loss to Mosley, some felt that Cintron had been redeemed. However, in his last fight, in which he moved up in weight to face Sergio Martinez, Cintron again showed a lack of heart.
Cintron had been set to fight tough Joshua Clottey, but took the fight with Marinez, who is a good boxer, but not a particularly hard puncher. Cintron won the early rounds, but in the 5th, the tide began to turn. Martinez opened a cut over Cintron’s left eye, and Kermit lost his composure. In the 7th round, a solid counter-punch decked Cintron – who signaled to the referee that he had been butted – and Cintron took the full 10 count. For some unidentified reason, Cintron was allowed to continue, and Martinez appeared the clear winner. The decision was a majority draw, with two even cards, and one judge scoring it accurately at 116-110 for Martinez.
Angulo, 26, is 5’ 10″, with a 69″ reach. He is an exciting fighter, who lacks good defensive skills. He has told reporters that he usually doesn’t know if he gets hit in a fight, until his corner men scold him between rounds. This could present a serious problem against the hard-hitting Cintron. However, Angulo takes a solid punch, and almost always does so, in order to place himself in position to land a couple of his own. He has good power, but tends to rely upon a combination of accumulated punches, physical strength, and intimidation to win.
Angulo must be favored, if only because a fighter who quits once, will quit again when the going gets tough. Cintron is too often intimidated, and hence has quit in three fights – though he was given a draw in one of them. Still, he has the ability to deliver hard punches to Angulo’s exposed chin, and Angulo’s balance on his feet leaves something to be desired. This will be a war. May the best man win.
The main event is very good on paper, and should be very entertaining. Andre Berto, 25, stands just under 5’ 9″. He is an athletic, muscular warrior, who adds a lot to the sport, both in and outside of the ring. Although he won a disputed decision in his most recent fight (against crafty Luis Collazo), he showed the guts and determination in the second-half of the fight that wins everyone’s respect.
It’s been almost two years since journeyman Cosme Rivera gave Berto a Henry Cooper-type of surprise in Saratoga Springs, knocking Bert down with a vicious counter-punch in the 6th round. Since then, Berto has improved significantly, including throwing crisper, shorter punches in rapid combinations.
Berto meets Juan Urango, 28, the rugged Columbian native who’s only lose came in a brutal 12-rounder against Ricky Hatton in 2007. Urango is 5’ 7″, and is naturally lighter than Berto. Yet, he is extremely strong – perhaps a bit muscle-bound – and, as he showed against Hatton, knows the value of a body punch.
Berto is the favorite in this fight. Urango tends to throw his punches wide, just as Berto did in the 6th round with Rivera, and Berto has the hand speed to take advantage of that. But it probably will not be an easy fight for Berto.
As odd as this may sound: styles make fights. And Berto is not unlike a young Joe Frazier. Keep in mind that Frazier was in real trouble in two early fights – he was decked twice in an early round by Oscar Bonavena, and staggered by Mexican heavyweight Manuel Ramos in their war. Frazier won, but like Berto versus Rivera, he had a tough time. And Urango is very strong, and hits very hard. Berto can benefit from using his boxing skills early, and wearing his slower foe down. It should be a serious test for Andre.

NWA Wisconsin is traveling to the Northern reaches of Wisconsin for the first time in close to 2 years to bring our fans the greatest wrestling action in the state in the classic Wrangler Inn on June 6th (8894 Old 41 Rd Oconto, WI) Doors open 7:00, Belltime 7:30.

Silas Young (NWA Midwest Champion) vs Justin Dredd for the NWA:Midwest Championship
Silas Young in undeniably one of the best wrestlers in the entire Midwest. Having wrestled the scene for years, Silas has worked his way up the Midwest scene time and time again. In addition to being the current NWA:Midwest champion, Silas Young is also a former NWA:Wisconsin champion of great standing.
However, he may have his hands filled in the extremely talented and, undeniably, “Simply Amazing” Justin Dredd. Dredd is one of the most promising and talented high flyers in NWA:Wisconsin, having held the ACW X-Division title on more than one occasion, and capturing the #1 contendership for a chance at the NWA:Midwest title back on April 18th at NWA Wisconsin Spring Showcase in Pulaski.
This match is sure to have “Main Event” written all over it.
Shane Hills (NWA:Wisconsin Champion) vs Mason Quinn for the NWA: Wisconsin Championship
A championship rematch of epic proportions to say the least. Shane Hills captured the NWA:Wisconsin title by defeating Mason Quinn on April 18th at NWA Wisconsin Spring Showcase in Pulaski. Shane is no stranger to taking on contenders that are as big in size as Quinn, and adding close to a decade of experience to his already impressive abilities, Shane is a Champion that will be hard to beat.
Mason Quinn may just be more than Shane can handle in the long run. The former NWA: Wisconsin champion held the prestigious title for close to 18 months, always able to outdo his opponents in the squared circle with his impressive strength and devastating “Exploder” Suplex.
Will Shane walk out still the NWA: Wisconsin champion using the impressive skills behind him, or will Mason Quinn recapture his former gold by once again overpowering that which stands before him?
Dinn T. Moore (All-Star Championship Wrestling Champion) vs “Cadillac” Nick Colucci vs “Diamond” Dave Demone in a Triple Threat Match for the ACW Heavyweight Championship
Dinn T. Moore is showing he is serious about being a champion. Having bested all he’s faced for his title thus far, Dinn T. Moore has even been able to win over the current NWA: Wisconsin champion Shane Hills from All-Star Championship Wrestling’s Battleground last month.
In a matchup such as this, the current ACW champion may have found himself biting off more than he can chew. Being a legend in the NWA:Wisconsin ring, he finds himself taking on “Diamond” Dave Demone, a competitor who’s begun making a name by taking on any and every veteran star he can get his hands on, as well as former ACW champion “Cadillac” Nick Colucci. All bets are off as there is no love lost between any of these impressive competitors.
Jerry Stylz (ACW:X-Division Champion) vs “The Dog of War” Kujo
Having recently obtained the ACW X-Divsion title by defeating Douglas Peterson on May 9th at ACW Battleground, the trickster of ACW, Jerry Stylz is ready to take on any competitor willing to fight a former Blue Devil. He had no trouble finding a competitor.
“The Dog of War” Kujo was more than willing to accept the call. One of the largest and most dominant men to ever enter the Wisconsin ring (not to mention one of the meanest). Having taken on even the mighty Sam Hayne, Kujo has no fear of the young and talented Stylz, and is ready to show why he’s muscled his way through nearly anyone brave enough to take him on.
Sam Hayne vs Brandon Haze
Sam Hayne has laid a path of destruction through all of Wisconsin since his return back in 2007. The “predator” of NWA:Wisconsin has defeated nearly every opponent from Dino Bambino to Kujo to Tejas to Jett Bennett. With nothing else to stand in his way, he’s now looking North of the border to stretch his path of destruction into an international scene.
Brandon Haze is a powerful and formidable opponent for Sam Hayne. Being a near equal in size and strength, “Canadian Made” Brandon Haze has made it his personal goal to show Oconto that Canadian skills can even overcome the powers of the underworld. Good luck there.
Sure to be a brutal fight from the ring of the bell, this is a match that will test the limits of the Wrangler Inn.
Jett Bennett vs Steve Sadist
Jett Bennett is a true powerhouse in the ring. A monster in strength, and a monster in size, Jett Bennett is easily capable of keeping his opponents on his terms, ground and pound. There are few men who can actually take on Jett Bennett without being a match in both size and power. Not to mention the monstrous biker hails from one of the most dangerous areas of Chicago
Steve Sadist, on the other hand, is just such an opponent that does not worry about such things. Sadist has been such a dominant force in the ACW ring, he’s been able to set his sights on NWA:Wisconsin carnage in only a few short months. This loose cannon has defeated all who have stood before him, including former ACW champion Nick Colucci.
Will the madman be able to overpower the unmovable object, or will Bennett crush the young Sadist under his leather soled heels?
Surely to be an up close and personal show that can’t be missed. NWA:Wisconsin and the Board of Directors look forward to seeing you all there for the showdown of 2009, as well as the party that follows.
