Manfredo stops Smichet in 7th

MONTREAL (April 18, 2009) – Former world title challenger Peter Manfredo, Jr. knocked out tough Tunisian veteran Walid “Tempete de Sable” Smichet in the seventh round of today’s scheduled 10-round co-feature at Montreal Casino

The 28-year-old Manfredo (32-6, 16 KOs), star of The Contender, Season I, got his career back on the right track with a strong performance against Smichet (20-6-3, 14 KOs), who had been knocked out only once in 28 prior pro fights, by Renan St. Juste in 2006. Manfredo accomplished what neither unbeaten world title contender John Duddy nor Canadian middleweight champion Sebastien Demers had been able to do in their 10 and 12 round fights, respectively, against Smichet.

“It was a nice win and good confidence builder,” Manfredo remarked. “I hurt him in the third and after that I knew I could hurt him anytime. He was tough, though, and came back fighting. I hurt him again in the sixth and knew that it was only a matter of time. I was bigger, stronger and better than him and proved it today, not only to the fans, but to myself. I’m a top-level performer who only had three weeks to get ready for this fight. I’m coming down to middleweight and I want Duddy. Today, I did what he couldn’t do and plan on being ringside Friday night (vs. Billy Lyell in Newark, NJ) for his fight.”

Manfredo recently reunited with his original promoter, Jimmy Burchfield (Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc., who said after the fight, “What a victory! A war, back-and-forth action, but Peter boxed beautifully and stuck with his game plan. He hurt Smichet a number of times, picking him apart, throughout the fight. It was a devastating punch; knockout of the year candidate.”

Manfredo floored Smichet in the third, staggered in the sixth, and put him to sleep with a vicious left hook at the end of the seventh.

“A great win,” Manfredo’s manager Larry Army added. “We couldn’t be happier with his comeback fight. The middleweight division is ripe for Peter’s pickings.”

Olympic Wrestling Champions John Smith and Jeff Blatnick among nominees for U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame

CHICAGO, Ill. – The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and Allstate Insurance Company (NYSE: ALL) today announced the nominees for the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Class of 2009 at a press event at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago.

Among the 15 nominees were Olympic wrestling champions John Smith and Jeff Blatnick.

Smith won Olympic gold medals in freestyle wrestling in 1988 and 1992. Blatnick was a 1984 Olympic champion in Greco-Roman and a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team that did not compete due to the U.S. boycott.

John Smith biography

Olympic wrestler John Smith is a four-time World Champion and a two-time Olympic Champion. He won gold medals in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games in the featherweight division and is also a two-time Pan American gold medalist (1987 and 1991). He was the first wrestler ever to win the James E. Sullivan Award and was named the U.S. Olympic Committee SportsMan of the Year in 1990. At the Centennial Olympic Games, Smith was named one of the 100 Greatest Olympians of All-Time.

Currently, Smith is the head wrestling coach at Oklahoma State University. In addition to his career as a wrestler, he is a five-time NCAA champion coach and a seven-time Big 12 Coach of the Year. He is also Oklahoma State’s All-Time Winningest coach. Smith was the head coach of the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team in 2000, the head coach of the U.S. World Championships Team in 1988 and the head coach of the USA World Cup Team in 1997.

Jeff Blatnick biography

As a cancer survivor, Jeff Blatnick won a 1984 Olympic gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling two years after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. For his efforts, the U.S. Olympic Team designated Blatnick as the flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony at the Los Angeles Games. Blatnick, who topped the 130 kg weight class, became the second U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler to ever capture Olympic gold.

Prior to his Los Angeles triumph, Blatnick won 10 National Championships and qualified for the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games but did not compete due to the U.S. boycott. He also won a New York state high school heavyweight wrestling title and back-to-back NCAA Division II Championships at Springfield (Mass.) College in 1978-79.

The nominees were unveiled Thursday at an event headlined by Allstate chairman, president and chief executive officer, Tom Wilson, along with USOC acting CEO Stephanie Streeter, Chicago 2016 chairman and CEO Patrick Ryan, and U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame member John Naber.

“The U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame celebrates our honorees’ commitment to excellence and recognizes Americans who are role models and heroes,” Wilson said. “Each of us can find strength, passion and inspiration in these ordinary people who achieved extraordinary success in the Olympics. They help make us proud to be Americans.”

From now through June 16, fans can cast their votes for the 2009 class of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame online at www.teamusa.org. The inducted class will include five individuals, one team and one Paralympian, as well as three additional individuals: a coach, veteran and special contributor. The inductees will be revealed in early July and will be honored at a black-tie induction ceremony on August 12 at McCormick Place in Chicago. The U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame presented by Allstate is the only national sports Hall of Fame that includes fan voting.

“The U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame honors Olympic and Paralympic legends who have inspired our country for generations, uniting us behind Team USA and giving us role models who epitomize the Olympic Ideals,” Streeter said. “Allstate’s generous support of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame and dedication to celebrating the accomplishments of America’s Olympic and Paralympic greats further illustrates their commitment to the Olympic Movement and America’s athletes.”

The August 12 induction ceremony will honor the 2009 U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame class and introduce a new international award – the Olive Branch Award – given to an individual or individuals who best represent the international ideals of the Olympic Games by working to build a peaceful and better world through sport. Also new to 2009, the induction ceremony will feature a special fundraising banquet to benefit Chicago 2016, Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“We are very excited for the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame presented by Allstate to return to Chicago for the fourth time,” Ryan said. “Chicago is a city that truly embraces the Olympic Movement, and to have a Chicago company like Allstate involved in celebrating historic Olympic and Paralympic achievements showcases the broad support our city has for the movement.”

LAS VEGAS, NEV. (April 17, 2009) – A world championship battle between north and south will highlight the May 2 pay-per-view undercard for Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton: “The Battle of East and West.” World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Featherweight Champion HUMBERTO SOTO of Mexico will defend his title against Canadian contender BENOIT GAUDET. The pay-per-view broadcast will also feature undefeated top-rated junior middleweight contender JAMES KIRKLAND, risking his rating and record when he takes on MIKE WALKER, former two-time world amateur champion and Russian Olympian MATT KOROBOV facing RODRIGO AGUIAR and former world amateur champion, Cuban southpaw ERISLANDY LARA against CHRIS GRAY. Combined, these eight gladiators have a combined record of 135-20-4 (84 KOs), an 85% winning percentage.

Humberto Soto (47-7-2, 30 KOs), from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, is making his second title defense since capturing the vacant title last December, winning a dominating 12-round unanimous decision over Francisco Lorenzo. Soto successfully defended the title on March 28, stopping Antonio Davis in the fourth round. Benoit Gaudet (20-1, 7 KOs), from Drummondville, Quebec, Canada, is riding a two-year, 11-bout winning streak. He has held the North America Boxing Association (NABA) super featherweight title since July 2008 when he defeated Jhohnny Antequera via a 12-round unanimous decision. He’s currently world-rated No. 9 by the WBC.

One of the most electrifying contenders in boxing, James Kirkland (25-0, 22 KOs) of Austin, TX has only gone the distance once in his last 17 fights. Even more impressive is the fact that he has only gone past the fourth round twice during his entire professional career. He returns to the ring fresh from his sixth-round knockout of former world title challenger Joel Julio on March 7. Kirkland’s impressive performances have catapulted him up the world rankings where he is rated No. 1 by the World Boxing Association (WBA) and the World Boxing Organization (WBO) at junior middleweight. He’ll be taking on Mike Walker (19-1-2, 12 KOs), from Chicago, who returns to the ring after defeating two-time world title challenger Antwun Echols on October 3, 2008. They’ll be fighting in a 10-round middleweight bout.

Matt Korobov (4-0, 4 KOs), a native of Orotukan, Russia, trains in Florida under the watchful eye of two-time Trainer of the Year Dan Birmingham. The tall, very skilled middleweight is known for his excellent combinations and power. In his last fight, he stopped Cory Jones in the fourth round of their February 21 fight at Madison Square Garden. Facing Korobov will be Rodrigo Aguilar (5-4, 3 KOs), who hails from Las Vegas and is known for his rugged style. They’ll be fighting in a four-round middleweight bout.

Considered to be one of the finest prospects to come out of Cuba’s famed amateur boxing system, Erislandy Lara (4-0, 3 KOs) captured a World Amateur Championship in 2005 and was expected to capture a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics before he defected from Cuba in a quest to fight professionally. Now living in Germany, Lara has won his last three bouts by knockout, the most recent coming against previously undefeated Keith Gross in February. On May 2, he’ll be fighting the far more experienced Chris Gray (11-7, 1 KO), who has won five of his last six bouts, in a four-round junior middleweight bout.

BRUCE ‘LIONHEART’ SCOTT Fires Salvo At Prizefighter 7 – The Cruiserweights

Former British, Commonwealth and WBU International Cruiserweight Champion Bruce ‘Lionheart’ Scott, along with six of his fellow seven contestants in Prizefighter 7 – The Cruiserweights tournament, that takes place at Earls Court on Tuesday 19th May 2009, were all together for the first time in one place when they attended a press conference held by the promoter of the series, Barry Hearn of Matchroom Sports, aboard HMS Belfast moored on the River Thames close to the iconic Tower Bridge in London.

Bruce’s six fellow combatants, all former champions, as is the seventh, Mark Krence (who failed to make the press conference having had the misfortune of being stuck in a traffic jam on the infamous “car park” laughingly called the M1 Motorway) were Commonwealth Champion Darren Corbett (27-4-1), British and European Champion Terry Dunstan (20-2), British, Commonwealth and European Light Heavyweight Champion Dean Francis (30-3-1), British Champion John ‘Buster’ Keeton (26-16), British and
Commonwealth Light Heavyweight Champion Neil Simpson (26-18-1) and British Southern Area Champion Micky Steeds (12-4).

The proceedings were entertainingly opened by Barry Hearn, Chairman of Matchroom Sports, who praised the fighters sat each side of him before saying “Boxing in some ways has lost its way and gone a bit stale. Prizefighter tries to turn the situation around by making it very easy to understand. Eight great fighters, eight former champions coming together for seven fights in one night.

One thing about Prizefighter is it’s exciting; these guys get in there and are going to be doing a job we would all like to do – but it’s the loneliest job in the world. I’ve not seen a bad Prizefighter fight. I’ve seen one or two fighters try to nick it and get beaten but never a bad fight.

This is basic entertainment boxing and bringing in a crowd that normally goes to boxing. It’s a cross between professional boxing, UFC, a little bit of the contender thrown in and a bit of 20/20 Cricket – it’s all action.

Each one of these fighters is a main event fighter and the crowd at Earls Court are going to be entertained. When the bell goes it’s going to be carnage because they don’t know any other way.

I thought the first Prizefighter Heavyweights was always going to be a cracker but this promises to be even better. Everyone is a puncher and that’s what makes Prizefighter interesting so these guys pick themselves.

I think this will be pound-for-pound the best Prizefighter show we’ve ever done and I’m excited about this like never before.”

No sooner had Barry Hearn finished than the first questions were asked of the fighters and it came as no surprise that they were directed at possibly the most famous name, besides the eminent Mr Hearn, seated there, the ever likeable and entertaining London-based Jamaican Bruce ‘Lionheart’ Scott.

Bruce was asked “you haven’t fought in three years, will you be ready?” to which he replied, “It depends on which way you look at it. I’ve been training hard with the excellent John Rooney. I’m training very hard, very very hard. Training harder than ever in my life.”

The next question asked was where he is training for the tournament, to which Bruce replied, “I’m training near London Bridge, I’m at Gleason’s Gym”

All nice and tame stuff but those gathered aboard the historic warship knew as soon as the third question was asked things were going to start getting a bit more lively as Bruce was asked about his fellow contestants. The mischievous Jamaican smiled before launching his first shot across his oppositions’ bows, “I’ve knocked some of them out. I’m not worried about them. They know who they are. I’m not joking, I’m coming for it.”

Bruce’s second salvo was directed at Terry Dunstan, who was sat next to him, when asked if he had sparred with him when they were both training at the same gym, “No, no he was to scared to spar me. No he wouldn’t spar with me. I had just come from Jamaica then, I was raw.” He said, before earnestly adding “You can ask him, he didn’t want to spar.”

A shell-shocked Terry responded, “He (Scott) must have a better memory than me or I must be punch drunk.”

Bruce fired a range-finding tracer, “He has the fastest knockout in England I think, yeah the European Championship I think.” quickly followed by a double barrel shot “I think it’s the only person he knocked out (Scott laughs) as my daughter punches harder than him. (Scott Laughs again, as does everyone in attendance)”

(For the record Terry Dunstan has 4 KOs and 8 TKOs in his career)

Terry spins round and let’s off his own quick-fire salvo, “He (Scott) says I can’t punch and he says I ain’t knocked anyone out . If he (Scott) says I ain’t knocked anybody out either he’s punch drunk or I’m punch drunk.”

Darren Corbett decides it’s time for him to to lock Bruce into his sights before firing a warning shot in the Jamaican’s direction, “Bruce, you say that you knocked people out. The referee stopped our fight in the tenth. I was ahead after three rounds. I hope we meet in the first round (of the Prizefighter Tournament) because…”

But before Darren could get another word out Terry Dunstan steams port side of the Irishman and diplomatically suggests, “Save it for the 19th.” to prevent a full scale battle breaking out.

As the fog of war subsided, Dean Francis decided it was time to declare his position, “For me this is a last-ditch attempt to fulfill my dream of winning a world title,” before firing his own warning shot over his opponents’ collective bows, “I’m going in there to beat everyone. If Bruce Scott thinks he will beat me then he has got another think coming. I’m a cruiserweight but a lot of these guys are heavyweights having to lose the weight.”

Micky Steeds diplomatically saved further battle cries by saying, “It’s a good competition and you can see that by the names in it. If you go all the way you can get three good names on your record all in one night, and that may normally take a couple of years.” before lightening the proceedings further when he added, “It’s fast and furious but I’m the youngest and prettiest here.”

Continuing on the lighter theme late arrival John Keeton, who will be celebrating his birthday the night of the Prizefighter tournament, raised the biggest laugh of the day when he said “It’s absolutely fantastic and I’m proud to be in it. There are a lot of old faces who have done a lot of damage in the past to me.” before adding after the laughter had died down, “But it’s an honour to have this opportunity of boxing in Prizefighter. This gives everyone a boost to their careers.”

Directly after the entertaining press conference Bruce walked the short distance to Gleason’s gym and got straight back to work preparing for the Prizefighter tournament. One thing is clear although he may have said “I’m coming for it” in a light hearted manner, the reality is he means it 100%.

The Prizefighter series is a knock-out boxing tournament created by boxing promoter Barry Hearn and aired on Sky Sports. The format has an initial eight fighters compete in four quarter-finals with the chance of fighting their way into a final fight for a chance to win a main prize of £25000. All contests take place on the same evening and consist of 3 x 3 minute
rounds.

JOEY ABELL TO MAKE HIS RETURN ON FRIDAY MAY 15TH AT THE LEGENDARY BLUE HORIZON

PHILADELPHIA (APRIL 14TH, 2009)—On Friday night May 15th one of the biggest punching Heavyweights will make his return to The Legendary Blue Horizon

Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell will be back at The Blue Horizon in a scheduled eight round bout against an opponent to be named shortly.

Abell will highlight a card that is promoted by Vernoca L. Michael and Blue Horizon Boxing Promotions Inc.

Abell, 23-4 with twenty-three knockouts returns to The Legendary Blue Horizon for the first time in thirteen months when he took out Maurice Wheeler in two rounds. This will be Abell’s tenth appearance at The Legendary Blue Horizon (8-1, 8 KO’s).

Abell is on a three fight streak of first round knockouts with the latest being over Galen Brown (32-10-1) on April 4th in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Vernoca L. Michael and matchmaker Don Elbaum have assembled an outstanding undercard to support the much anticipated main event.

In an eight round Jr. Middleweight bout, Kevin Carmody of Philadelphia will take on Daniel Maldonado of Henderson, Kentucky.

Carmody, 10-11-1 with one knockout is itching to get back in the win column as he is 0-4 with one no-contest since May of 2007

Carmody is coming off a six round stoppage defeat to Meacher Major (15-3-1) on February 20 in Buffalo. This fight will be Carmody’s second appearance at The Legendary Blue Horizon. Carmody had Steve Upsher Chambers in trouble as he dropped the then 17-1-1 Chambers in round one of his eight round unanimous decision defeat back on September 12, 2008.

Maldonado has a gaudy record of 21-2 with thirteen knockouts.

Maldonado has scored a couple of signature wins as he scored a ninth round stoppage over former world title challenger Whyber Garcia (13-1) to capture the NABA Featherweight title on February 28, 2004. Maldonado also has a fifth round stoppage victory over former world title challenger Julio Coronel on July 16th, 2005.

Maldonado captured the IBA Featherweight title with a twelve round split decision over Jose Alberto Gonzalez (14-2) on November 17, 2006. That win was part of a three fight winning streak with the latest being a four round unanimous decision over Terrance Roy on May 16th, 2008 in Evansville, Indiana.

In another bout scheduled for eight rounds, Legendary Blue Horizon favorite, Gee Cullmer (15-1, 3 KO’s) will take on Clarence “Sonny Bono” Taylor in a Middleweight bout.

Cullmer has been on a roll as he is undefeated in his last eleven contests (10-0, 1 NC)

This will be Cullmer’s eleventh consecutive start at The Legendary Blue Horizon and is coming off a eight round Majority decision over Jameel Wilson back on September 12th in what some in Philadelphia are calling the 2008 Philly Fight of the Year.

Taylor has a deceiving record of 13-21-3 with six knockouts. The Wilmington, Delaware native has fought a “whose-who” of top fighters in the Jr. Middleweight & Middleweight divisions.

This will be Taylor’s third appearance at The Legendary Blue Horizon (1-1) which includes his last outing which was a six round unanimous decision loss to Jamal Davis on March 6th.

Steve Upsher Chambers (19-1-1, 1 NC, 5 KO’s) will be back in action after a recent foot injury to compete in an eight round Jr. Welterweight bout.

Chambers of Philadelphia is coming off an eight round unanimous decision over Ben Ankrah (11-8) on December 5th at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

This will be Chambers 21st consecutive fight at The Legendary Blue Horizon and twenty-second overall appearances (19-1, 1 NC)

Julias Edmonds (5-3) will be back in action as the Philadelphia native will look to carry on the momentum of his big win back on April 3rd when he dominated Tyric Robinson (9-3-1) by scoring a unanimous decision at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

In a rematch of a bloodbath that took place on April 3rd, Taneal Goyco will battle Davit Davitshvili will wage once again wage war in a four round rematch of Cruiserweights.

Goyco (2-0, 1 KO) and Davitshvili (0-2) bloodied and battered each other over four rounds with Goyco gaining the crowd pleasing unanimous decision.

Philadelphia based Heavyweight; Nakidi Ku-Ntima will make his pro debut against Kareem Wilson (0-2) of Washington, D.C.

In a four round Jr. Middleweight bout, Ruslan Khayrtdinov (2-0, 1 KO) of Russia will take on an opponent to be named.

The Gleason’s Gym 7th Annual Fantasy Boxing Camp will be at Kutsher’s Country Club in Monticello, New York over the Labor Day Weekend, September 4 through September 7, 2009.

The camp is open for anybody that likes boxing. Our youngest attendee was 12 and our oldest attendee was 76. There are professional and amateur boxers and businessmen and women boxers, and just plain fans of boxing that attend.

There will be four days of intense training with some of boxing’s greatest champions. Join Carlos Ortiz, Emile Griffith, Iran Barkley, Mark Breland, Juan LaPorte, Alicia Ashley, Melissa Hernandez, Hector Roca, Yuri Foreman, Martin Gonzalez, Terry Southerland and others training and fun at this year’s camp.

There is limited space for our 2009 Fantasy Boxing Camp. Please make your reservations early. The deadline is August 8, 2009. A $500 non-refundable deposit will secure a place at the camp. The balance of the payment must be made by August 15, 2009.

THE HISTORY OF GLEASON’S GYM

Gleason’s Gym is the oldest active boxing gym in theUnited States. We have trained 131 World Champions, two Olympic Gold Medallists and hundreds of amateur champions. The current 16,000 square foot facility on Front Street sits in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge. Many great champions have plied their craft at Gleason’s Gym. Our “Hall of Fame” includes Jake La Motta “The Raging Bull”, Ali, Tyson, Jones, LaPorte, Breland. Gleason’s Gym is proud to be the home of Light Welterweight World Champion Paulie Malignaggi.

BOXING CAMP

If you like baseball you cannot go to Yankee Stadium and train with the Yankees, nor can you go to Madison Square Garden and shoot hoops with the Knicks. Boxing is the only sport where you can actually train next to champions and top contenders. We are offering you that same opportunity with our annual Fantasy Boxing Camp. Your camp will include intensive boxing discussions, coaching sessions, ring craft, sparring and training drills. At the end of the camp you will have the chance to showcase your newfound skills in our Fantasy Camp Sparring Show. Our camp will give you the chance to learn from World class trainers such as Hector Roca, Olympic Gold Medallist & World Champion Mark Breland, 5 Time World Champion Carlos Ortiz and 2 Time World Champion Juan LaPorte amongst others. Professional and Amateur sparring partners will also be available to help with your training. Men, Women and children are all welcome. No previous boxing experience is necessary-we cater to all skill levels.

KUTSHER’S COUNTRY CLUB

KUTSHER’S Country Club is a deluxe Complex located on over 1,200 acres in the magnificent Catskill Mountains. KUTSHER’S is a year round self contained Resort. Attendees of the Fantasy Boxing Camp will have full access to all the facilities that KUTSHER’S offers, including Bicycles, Canoes, Exercise Room, Fishing, Miniature Golf, Indoor and Outdoor pools, Health Club, Saunas and Steam Room at no extra charge.

The indoor pool is available for our exclusive use each morning and evening of the camp. As part of the Fantasy Boxing Camp you will be eligible for KUTSHER’S Full American Dining Plan, which includes three meals per day. Meals will be served privately in the Sportsman’s Dining Room. All Boxing Camp training will be done in the Recreation Hall. All guest rooms have a private bath, color TV, direct dial phone, oversize closets and individual heat and air conditioning controls.
