LAS VEGAS (April 16, 2009) – Russian middleweight Roman “Made In Hell” Karmazin will fight at home in Asia for the first time in seven years, May 9 on a show presented by KZ Event Productions, Inc., outdoors at Khadjimukan Stadium in Chimkent, Kazakhstan.

World-rated light heavyweight contender Beibut Shumenov headlines the star-studded show in his hometown against former IBF super middleweight champion Alejandro “Naco” Berrio in the12-round main event for the vacant IBA World light heavyweight championship, as well as Shumenov’s WBO Asia Pacific, WBC Asian Boxing Council and PABA Interim titles.

Las Vegas-based KZ Event Productions, Inc. is owned by the Shumenov brothers, pro boxer Beibut and Chingis.

Karmazin (38-3-1, 24 KOs), born in Kuznetsk, Russia, has been residing the past few years in Hollywood (CA), where works out of the famed World Card Gym in Los Angeles and is trained by Freddie Roach. In 1991, Roman went to Kazakhstan to serve in the military and he was allowed to workout at in a gym in Uralsk under trainer Uahasov Kvanysh. Two years later, Roman was discharged and Kvanysh offered him an opportunity to remain training in Uralsk. Impressed by what he had been taught, Karmazin agreed and he lived in Uralsk, marrying a year later and his son, Oleg, was born there in 1995. Oleg still lives and studies in Uralsk. Roman, however, left on the advisement of his trainer in 1995 to train in St. Petersburg (Russia) due to lack of sufficient sparring partners.

“I am very excited to be going back to Kazakhstan to fight on the Shumenov’s card,” Roman remarked. “I truly appreciate what Beibut and Chingis are doing to support the sport of boxing in Kazakhstan and all around the world. I hope to put on a great performance that will lead to a world title shot at the end of this year.”

A former European light middleweight champion, Karmazin captured the IBF light middleweight title in 2005, winning a unanimous 12-round decision against Kassim Ouma. Roman’s most notable victims over the years also include former world champions Alejandro Garcia and Bronco McKart, as well as Antwun Echols, and James Obede Toney.

In his last action, Roman successfully defended the NABF belt that he won last year by defeating McKart, stopping 3-time world title challenger Echols in the seventh round of their March 21st fight at the Playboy Mansion. Karmazin, rated No. 5 by the IBF and No. 10 by the WBC, will fight an opponent to be determined May 9 in the 10-round co-feature.

Also fighting on the card is former WBO light welterweight title-holder DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley (33-11, 19 KOs) and 4-time Uzbekistan National amateur champion Gayrat Ahmedov (10-0-1, 6 KOs), who will be making his KZ Event debut, in a pair of 8-round bouts against opponents to be determined.

“We’re excited to add a great fighter such as Roman Karmazin on our card,” promoter Chingis Shumenov said. “He’s the third former world champion, joining Berrio and Corley, fighting on the May 9th show. Roman is on his way to becoming world champion once again. He lived in Kazakhstan and fans certainly will give him a royal welcome home.

“KZ Event Productions is actively pursuing new talent to sign and everyone will be impressed by the newest member of our growing stable, unbeaten Gayrat Ahmedov. The May 9th show will be taped live and broadcast at a later date in North America. This summer we plan on promoting a show in the United States.”

2004 Kazakhstan Olympian sensation Beibut Shumenov (7-0, 5 KOs), the 2008 WBC Asian Boxing Council Organization’s Boxer of the Year, is already rated No. 8 by the WBA, No. 9 by the WBO and No. 16 by the WBC. His most notable win was a one-sided victory by 12-round decision (120-107, 120-108, 120-108) against former WBC title-holder Montell “Ice” Griffin (50-8, 30 KOs) last August in Kazakhstan.

Colombian knockout artist Berrio (28-5, 27 KOs) has been the distance only once in 33 pro fights, knocking out 27 of his 28 victims, highlighted by two victories against Robert Stiegltiz, once for the IBF super middleweight title, along with wins versus Syd Vanderpool and Yusaf Mack.

Also scheduled to fight May 9 on the undercard is heavyweight “Wreckless” Willie Chapman (21-29-4, 7 KOs) vs. Talgat Dosanov (12-11-1, 5 KOs), undefeated Uzbekistan light middleweight Ravshan Hudoinazarov (7-0. 5 KOs), Chimkent hometown favorites such as super bantamweight Yersin Jailauov (19-6-1, 7 KOs), middleweight Kanat Orakbaev (2-0, 0 KOs) and pro-debuting heavyweight Doszhan Ospanov. JOEY ABELL TO MAKE HIS RETURN ON FRIDAY MAY 15TH AT THE LEGNEDARY BLUE HORIZON

PHILADELPHIA (APRIL 14TH, 2009)—On Friday night May 15th one of the biggest punching Heavyweights will make his return to The Legendary Blue Horizon

Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell will be back at The Blue Horizon in a scheduled eight round bout against an opponent to be named shortly.

Abell will highlight a card that is promoted by Vernoca L. Michael and Blue Horizon Boxing Promotions Inc.

Abell, 23-4 with twenty-two knockouts returns to The Legendary Blue Horizon for the first time in thirteen months when he took out Maurice Wheeler in two rounds. This will be Abell’s tenth appearance at The Legendary Blue Horizon (8-1, 8 KO’s).

Abell is on a three fight streak of first round knockouts with the latest being over Galen Brown (32-10-1) on April 4th in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Vernoca L. Michael and matchmaker Don Elbaum have assembled an outstanding undercard to support the much anticipated main event.

In an eight round Jr. Welterweight bout, Kevin Carmody of Philadelphia will take on Daniel Maldonado of Henderson, Kentucky.

Carmody, 10-11-1 with one knockout is itching to get back in the win column as he is 0-4 with one no-contest since May of 2007.

Carmody is coming off a six round stoppage defeat to Meacher Major (15-3-1) on February 20 in Buffalo. This fight will be Carmody’s second appearance at The Legendary Blue Horizon. Carmody had Steve Upsher Chambers in trouble as he dropped the then 17-1-1 Chambers in round one of his eight round unanimous decision defeat back on September 12, 2008.

Maldonado has a gaudy record of 21-2 with thirteen knockouts.

Maldonado has scored a couple of signature wins as he scored a ninth round stoppage over former world title challenger Whyber Garcia (13-1) to capture the NABA Featherweight title on February 28, 2004. Maldonado also has a fifth round stoppage victory over former world title challenger Julio Coronel on July 16th, 2005.

Maldonado captured the IBA Featherweight title with a twelve round split decision over Jose Alberto Gonzalez (14-2) on November 17, 2006. That win was part of a three fight winning streak with the latest being a four round unanimous decision over Terrance Roy on May 16th, 2008 in Evansville, Indiana.

In another bout scheduled for eight rounds, Legendary Blue Horizon favorite, Gee Cullmer (15-1, 3 KO’s) will take on Clarence “Sonny Bono” Taylor in a Middleweight bout.

Cullmer has been on a roll as he is undefeated in his last eleven contests (10-0, 1 NC)

This will be Cullmer’s eleventh consecutive start at The Legendary Blue Horizon and is coming off a eight round Majority decision over Jameel Wilson back on September 12th in what some in Philadelphia are calling the 2008 Philly Fight of the Year.

Taylor has a deceiving record of 13-21-3 with six knockouts. The Wilmington, Delaware native has fought a “whose-who” of top fighters in the Jr. Middleweight & Middleweight divisions.

This will be Taylor’s third appearance at The Legendary Blue Horizon (1-1) which includes his last outing which was a six round unanimous decision loss to Jamal Davis on March 6th.

Steve Upsher Chambers (19-1-1, 1 NC, 5 KO’s) will be back in action after a recent foot injury to compete in an eight round Jr. Welterweight bout.

Chambers of Philadelphia is coming off an eight round unanimous decision over Ben Ankrah (11-8) on December 5th at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

This will be Chambers 21st consecutive fight at The Legendary Blue Horizon and twenty-second overall appearances (19-1, 1 NC)

Julias Edmonds (5-3) will be back in action as the Philadelphia native will look to carry on the momentum of his big win back on April 3rd when he dominated Tyric Robinson (9-3-1) by scoring a unanimous decision at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

Edmonds will be fighting in a scheduled six round bout against an opponent to be named.

Edmonds of Philadelphia is on a three fight winning streak and will be making his will be making his seventh appearance at “The Blue” where he has compiled a 5-1 record.

In a rematch of a bloodbath that took place on April 3rd, Taneal Goyco will battle Davit Davitshvili will wage once again wage war in a four round rematch of Cruiserweights

Goyco (2-0, 1 KO) and Davitshvili (0-2) bloodied and battered each other over four rounds with Goyco gaining the crowd pleasing unanimous decision.

Philadelphia based Heavyweight; Nakidi Ku-Ntima will make his pro debut against Kareem Wilson (0-2) of Washington, D.C.

In a four round Jr. Middleweight bout, Ruslan Khayrtdinov (2-0, 1 KO) of Russia will take on an opponent to be named.

Manfredo goes back to the future Fights Walid Smichet Saturday in Montreal

PROVIDENCE (April 15, 2009) – Former world title challenger Peter Manfredo, Jr., free from his promotional contract ties with the Tournament of Contenders, has gone back to the future, hooking-up with his original promoter, Jimmy Burchfield, and fighting against Walid “Tempete de Sable” Smichet this Saturday afternoon at Montreal Casino.

Manfredo (31-6, 16 KOs), 28, faces Schmidt (20-5-3, 14 KOs) in the10-round co-feature that has career-determining implications for both fighters. Manfredo, star of The Contender, Season I, plans to work his way down to the middleweight division, although this bout is at 168-pounds.

“I only had three weeks to get ready for this fight, so making it for 168 is a trade off, I guess, for fighting this guy in his backyard,” Manfredo explained. “I feel good about dropping my weight to 160. I was too small as a super middleweight and I’ll be just right at middleweight. I won’t be a huge middleweight like Kelly Pavlik, but look at Sergio Mora. I beat him our second fight (Mora won a controversial decision); he beat me the first fight. He won a world title at 154 and now he’s fighting Pavlik for the middleweight title. I see myself as better, or at least the equal of Mora. I know I can be world champion. I have to rebuild but I’m a fighter and that’s what we do….fight! Walid may not be a world champion, but he’s a tough competitor who can fight. Everybody saw what he did to (John) Duddy (Smichet busted-up Duddy, who received 30-plus stitches and lost out on a $1.45 million fight against Pavlik).”

Burchfield, president of Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), signed Manfredo in 2000 and masterfully moved Peter to 21-0 in 3 ½ years, including wins against former world champion Frankie Randall and The Contender III eventual winner Grady Brewer, as well as The Contender I star Anthony Bonsante, before agreeing to release “The Pride of Providence” in order to participate in The Contender, in which, Manfredo reached the season finale against Mora. For the past three years, CES worked in association with the Tournament of Contenders, outside of the television reality series, on behalf of Manfredo.

“We’re picking-up where we left off,” an excited Burchfield said about getting back with Manfredo. “Peter is still one of the most marketable fighters in the world. He’s only 28 and wants to be world champion There’s a lot of upside. We had just signed a 3-year promotional contract and passed the CES ceremonial torch from Vinny Paz to Peter, when he asked for permission to fight on The Contender. He was the NABO champion and No. 3 in the WBO, but Peter’s like a son to me, and I couldn’t stop him from getting a shot at a $1-million prize for his family. That experience helped him become a household name in boxing circles. Our plan now calls for him to fight outside of New England for awhile, possibly one time in Italy, before fighting back at home. We have targeted (John) Duddy at middleweight.”

Nothing happens for Manfredo, however, unless he gets past Smichet, the former Canadian middleweight title-holder who has knocked-off previously unbeaten Matt O’Brien, fought a draw with Donny McCrary, and been in tough against Sebastien Demers and Duddy.

“He is a tough, hard-nosed, come forward fighter,” Manfredo’s father/head trainer Peter Manfredo, Sr. broke-down Smichet. “He is easy to figure out. Peter needs fight smart – box, angles, double-up on his jab, and work behind it. He can’t stand in front of him or it’s going to be a much harder fight. Everyone saw what this guy did to Duddy. You can’t get in too close with him because he has a nice right hand. I give a lot of credit to his trainer, Otis Grant.”

All of Manfredo’s pro losses have been to world champions or world-class fighters –Joe Calzaghe, Mora (twice), Jeff Lacy, Sakio Bika and Alfonso Gomez – and half were of them super middleweight. Peter is on his way down to 160 pounds with Duddy clearly in his sights.

“Duddy’s a great guy, unbeaten contender and a big draw,” Manfredo concluded. “We could make a lot of money for each other, Italian versus Irishman, in a great fight for fans like (Arturo) Gatti and (Micky) Ward. If that fight doesn’t happen there’s guys like Demers and others, but I have to take care of Smichet first and show people I still have it.

“I’m glad to be back with Jimmy. He’s a great guy, like family. I started with him and trust him. I can talk to him about what’s on my mind, vent if I have to, and he’ll always send me in the right direction. I believe he can take me to the place I want to be – world champion. I have the name and he has the connections. Together we can make one last run. I’m taking it one fight at a time and we’ll see where it takes us.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA RETIRES FROM RING

LOS ANGELES (April 14) -Famed boxing champion and future Hall of Fame fighter Oscar de la Hoya, one of the most decorated pugilist in the history of the sport, retired as a professional today during a noon press conference in Nokia Plaza LA Live in downtown Los Angeles.

“After heartfelt discussions with my family and my closest friends, it is with deep gratitude and appreciation that I announce my retirement from professional boxing,” said De La Hoya, who retires from the ring with a 39-6, 30 KOs record. “Boxing has been the single, most consistent part of my life and although I will miss the ring, I know that it is time for me to step away from the sport competitively and become more active in the other aspects of it that are already in place and ready for me to pursue.”

“My career has been nothing short of magical and I am forever grateful to all of the people who made it possible,” continued De La Hoya. “Most importantly I deeply appreciate all of my fans who showered me with their cheers and support, consistently holding me up throughout my 17-year professional career. I believe the true meaning of my career was not in the winning or losing, but in the gift of sharing my fights with all of them, as I never imagined it would mean so much to so many. It has been an honor to fight all of my fights for each and every one of you.”

De La Hoya will now take an even more substantial role in Golden Boy Promotions, working alongside the company’s CEO Richard Schaefer to continue to deliver quality boxing events around the world.

“This is truly a bittersweet day for boxing and its fans throughout the world as Oscar’s name has been synonymous with the sport for nearly two decades,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO Golden Boy Promotions. “It is been a privilege and honor for me to work with this amazing champion and watch the brilliance of his career both in and out of the ring. As one of my closest friends, both personally and professionally, I look forward to working with Oscar as he takes a more active role in Golden Boy Promotions now that he is no longer competing in the sport.”

Originally from East Los Angeles, where as a young child he laced up a pair of boxing gloves for the first time at four years old, he began his amateur career several years later and started dreaming of professional success. The 10-time world champion, who collected titles in six different weight divisions, has long been considered the most influential fighter of the sports modern era.

“Oscar de la Hoya has left an indelible legacy in and out of the ring,” Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said. “This son of East L.A. has made the City of Angels proud, not only for his ten championships in six weight divisions, but for never forgetting his roots and giving back to his community.”

Having turned professional immediately following his 1992 Olympic gold medal victory in Barcelona, Spain, De La Hoya immediately turned in to a box office success. His popularity and following made him the highest grossing non-heavyweight fighter the history of the sport. Participating in 19 pay-per-view fights, De La Hoya drew over 14.1 million pay-per-view buys and over $696 million dollars in pay-per-view revenue throughout his career. He appeared in three of the top eight highest grossing pay-per-view boxing events including the granddaddy of them all – hissuper-fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May 2007, which shattered the all-time pay-per-view record with 2.4 million homes in addition to generating a record-setting live gate of $19 million. It was the first pay-per-view fight to be purchased by over two million homes.

“Oscar de la Hoya has fashioned a storybook career through hard work, dedication, talent and the commitment to fighting the best fighters in the biggest fights,” said Ross Greenburg, President of HBO Sports. “HBO has had the privilege of televising his fights since 1993 and we watched him develop into a champion and a gracious ambassador for the sport.”

“The Golden Boy’s” Hall of Fame-bound career has seen him win 10 world championships in every division from 130 to 160 pounds while facing the elite of the sport including Floyd Mayweather Jr., Julio Cesar Chavez, Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, Felix Trinidad, Pernell Whitaker, Ike Quartey, Fernando Vargas, Arturo Gatti, Genaro Hernandez, Jesse James Leija and Hector Camacho Sr. Along the way, De La Hoya has become boxing’s undisputed superstar and his acclaimed career and popularity will be remembered for decades to come.

“I marvel at my son’s success and know that all of the hard work and dedication he had when he was a kid and during the formative years of his boxing training made him the champion he became,” said Joel De La Hoya Sr. “I am extremely proud of my son and know he has achieved everything possible in the ring. It is now time for him to enjoy his family and pursue in earnest all of the other opportunities that await him.”

In addition to his success inside the ring, De La Hoya has made a conscious effort to generously give back to the same community which played such an integral role in making it possible for him to achieve such success. The Oscar de la Hoya Foundation was created in 1995 to bring a better quality of life to the people of East Los Angeles. The foundation provides funding for a number of projects including the Cecilia Gonzalez de la Hoya Cancer Center, the Oscar de la Hoya Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit and the Oscar de la Hoya Labor and Delivery Center, all located at the White Memorial Medical Center in East Los Angeles. In addition to his efforts to support medical care for citizens of East Los Angeles, De La Hoya’s dedication to education in the East Los Angeles area led him to establish the Oscar de la Hoya Animo Charter High School in 2003 which now serves over 500 students in grades nine through twelve and is ranked among the top 10 percent of schools in the state of California that serve similar communities. US News and World Report ranked the Oscar de la Hoya Animo Charter High School #53 out of the top 100 in the entire nation.

Most importantly De La Hoya will now have more time to spend with his wife Millie and children.

“In closing, I want to acknowledge my wonderful wife Millie, my children and my entire family who have been extremely supportive and patient with me, sacrificing a tremendous amount of our time together in order for me to pursue my career,” said De La Hoya. “Now it is time for me to be there for them.”
