Dean “Irish Lightning” Byrne makes NYC debut in “Erin Go Brawl II”

NEW YORK (February 24, 2009) – The latest boxing sensation in a long, growing line of Irish boxers who’ve emigrated to the United States is unbeaten light welterweight Dean “Irish Lightning” Byrne, who makes his New York City debut fighting on the St. Patrick’s Day Eve (Monday, March 16) “Erin Go Brawl II” card, presented by Irish Ropes Promotions, at WaMu Theater in the famed Madison Square Garden.

2004 Olympian Andy Lee (16-1, 13 KOs) takes on 3-time world title challenger Antwun “Kid Dynamite” Echols (31-9-4, 27 KOs) in the 10-round main event, while former WBC bantamweight champion Wayne “Pocket Rocket” McCullough, 1992 Olympic silver medalist, fights in the 10-round co-feature against an opponent to be determined.

Byrne (10-0, 4 KOs), who had more than 200 amateur bouts, is a former Irish amateur and Australian professional national champion. The Crumlin, Ireland native now fights out of Los Angeles, where he’s trained by Freddie Roach and has sparred at the Wild Card Gym with superstars Manny Pacquiao, Juan Marquez and even Oscar De La Hoya for a few rounds. Bryne is in an 8-round bout versus TBA.

McCullough started the Irish boxing explosion in the U.S., followed by Stevie Collins, Kevin McBride and then John Duddy and Lee. “One of the reasons I came to the U.S. to fight was what they did here,” Byrne said from training camp in Los Angeles. “I watched Stevie Collins and the Irish haven’t had a world champion in 12 years since him. Everything is great here (U.S.) for boxing – training, gyms, trainers, and sparring. A year ago, I was going to Boston (where, ironically, Roach is from) from Australia but stopped in Los Angeles, worked out a few times at Wild Card, and then Freddie said I could stay. I’ve been there ever since. Sparring there for a young fighter can’t get any better. Manny’s an unbelievable fighter and a great person. Freddie has gotten me to sit down more on my punches. I’ve always had power but, he’s brought it out of me, and I’m much more comfortable.

“I’m looking forward to being in New York City for the first time. I’ve wanted to fight there for a long time to show everybody what I’m capable of. I’m a great entertainer and love to entertain fans who’ve paid their hard earned money to come to my fights. I’ve always dreamed of fighting in Madison Square Garden and to do it in front of so many Irish fans is a great opportunity for me. I fought on the Irish Team with Andy Lee. He’s a good friend and a good guy. I knew of Wayne McCullough, everybody did back home, but I don’t know him. I said hello to him once at a stadium but I’m sure he doesn’t remember me. I’m looking forward to meeting him and honored to be fighting on the same card as Andy and Wayne.”

Scheduled to fight in 6-rounders on “Erin Go Brawl II” are Irish super featherweight champion Eddie “Pride of Tallaght” Hyland (11-1, 3 KOs), of Dublin; Philadelphia by way of Galway middleweight “Slick Fightin’ Irish” Simon O’Donnell (8-1, 5 KOs); Limerick light heavyweight Jamie Power (4-0, 2 KOs) versus Reggie “Concrete” LaCrete (4-0-2, 3 KOs), from Brooklyn; Jersey City super featherweight Danny “Little Mac” McDermott (7-1-1, 2 KOs).

Also on the card in 4-round matches are Massachusetts light welterweight Danny O’Connor (3-0, 1 KO), 2008 U.S. Olympic Team alternate; Brooklyn featherweight Sadam Ali (1-0, 1 KO), 2008 U.S. Olympian; former St. Xavier College star football player Tommy Brown, fighting out of Chicago, making his pro debut in the light middleweight division.

Irish Ropes president Eddie McLoughlin also announced that County Galway’s Sean Mannion (42-14-1, 14 KOs) will be honored at “Erin Go Brawl II” in honor of the 25th anniversary of his WBA light middleweight title fight at Madison Square Garden against the eventual champion Mike “The Bodysnatcher” McCallum.

Figueroa growing with RJ & Square Ring

LAS VEGAS (February 23, 2009) – NABF light welterweight champion Frankie “El Gato” Figueroa (20-2, 13 KOs), halfway through his five-week training program at the famed Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning in Winchester, Massachusetts, took some time between workouts to talk about his new promoter, Square Ring Promotions, and how his career has taken a major step up since he signed with Roy Jones, Jr.’s promotional company.

“My first fight under the Square Ring banner was last year on the November 8th Calzaghe-Jones HBO PPV event,” Frankie said. “Unfortunately, my opponent (Gavin Rees) pulled out and we went with Emanuel Augustus, who is a very unorthodox fighter. Fortunately, though, I had trained hard and was well prepared going into the fight and came out with a hard fought victory.

“I am now in position for the IBF eliminator bout against (former world champion) Randall Bailey. The winner will get a shot at the new IBF champion, Juan Urango. My promoter is working with Bailey’s promoter, Lou DiBella, to make it happen, hopefully, sometime in April. My goal is to become the undisputed light welterweight champion and then moving up to 147 to fight the big names there.”

Figueroa has been working out at Boyle’s three days a week, two hours a day, for five weeks. After each session he is massaged-out and off days Frankie does light boxing-related workouts at a nearby gym.

“John Wirt (CEO of Square Ring Promotions) is a great guy and businessman,” Figueroa’s manager, Sal LoNano, remarked. “He’s a stand-up guy who is there for us and having Frankie promoted by one of the all-time greatest boxers, Roy Jones, Jr., has already opened up doors in this profession for my fighter.”

The 30-year-old Puerto Rican-American was born in Spanish Harlem, where Frankie was a 2-time New York City high school wrestling champion (14-0 as a senior). Figueroa was nicknamed, “El Gato” (The Cat) because he was the only one quick enough to catch a cat that was a mascot at his original gym in the Bronx. Frankie is presently rated No. 5 by the IBF, as well as No. 10 by the WBC and No. 14 by the WBA.

“I started late in boxing, only eight years ago, and I really didn’t know too much about Roy,” U.S. Army veteran Figueroa explained. “As I grew in boxing, I learned about Roy’s great career and fighting today under his banner is a tremendous honor. It gives me an opportunity to showcase my skills and personality to boxing fans and networks.”

U.S.A. OLYMPIAN KEN CHERTOW TO CELEBRATE 20 YEARS OF GOLD MEDAL TRAINING CAMPS

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., – Ken Chertow Wrestling, the nation’s largest wrestling camp system, will begin their 20th year of the Gold Medal Training Camp System on May 24. We will be conducting camps in 23 locations across the nation. The Gold Medal Camp System has been designed so campers will learn and retain as much as possible.

The camp is owned and coached by Ken Chertow, a 3-time NCAA All-American at Penn State University and United States Olympian. Chertow, who has been teaching and coaching wrestling for more than 20 years, including coaching stints at both Penn State and Ohio State Universities, has seen his campers succeed at the state, national and world level. Chertow’s camps have helped produce more than 500 state champions from 1998 – 2008. Chertow’s focus is helping kids grow into successful student-athletes with a passion for wrestling and personal achievement.

On staff with Coach Chertow this year and in the past are highly recognized guest clinicians including Olympians, NCAA Champions and some of the best high school and college coaches.

O’Connor fighting on ESPN’s FNF Friday night in Hollywood, Florida

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (February 23, 2009) – In only his fourth professional fight, 2008 U.S. Olympic first alternate Danny O’Connor makes his national television debut Friday night in the opening bout on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights against light welterweight Jamar Saunders (2-1-1, 1 KO) at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

The 23-year-old O’Connor (3-0, 1 KO) is coming off of his best performance as a pro, winning a unanimous 4-round decision (40-46, 40-36, 40-34) January 30 against Greg Jimenez.

“I’m very excited to be fighting February 27th on national television,” O’Connor said between workouts. “All of my family and friends at home will be able to watch me fight on ESPN. For so many years some of my fans haven’t been able to watch my fights. This is a great opportunity for me to showcase my talent to so many people who’ve never seen me fight. I’m in my best shape, at the top of my game. I’ve trained hard and I’m coming to fight. I love fighting at the Hard Rock and it’s starting to feel like home.”

O’Connor, fighting out of Framingham (MA), won last year’s US Future Stars National Championship, in which he was named Most Outstanding Boxer, as well as the 2008 National Golden Gloves Tournament. Danny, who is promoted by Seminole Warriors Boxing, defeated 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz, of the Dominican Republic, as an amateur last May in a USA-Dominican Republic dual meet.

“We’re all very excited and can’t wait,” O’Connor’s co-manager and head trainer David Keefe remarked. “Showcasing Danny on national television has been in our plans since Day 1 and now it’s happening in only his fourth pro fight.”
