BACKYARD BRAWL IN THE CENTRAL VALLEY

On March 7, 2009 PureCombat will be brawlin at the International Agri-Center in Tulare CA. Home of the largest agricultural show in the world and for one night will be the battlegrounds for PureCombat 7, Backyard Brawl. Most of the combatants will be from areas within a 100 mile radius and are ready to claim their territory.

For the Main Event of the night it will be Jason “The Live Wire” Von Flue vs Steve “Dangerous” Ramirez. Jason we all know is a veteran from the Ultimate Fighter Season 2 and has a 13-11-1 record after entering the cage with such athletes as Brett Cooper, Luke Stewart, Cung Lee, Joe Riggs, Luke Cummo and Mac Danzig. Jason’s opponent trains out of The Island in Visalia CA and has a record of 6-4. Even though Steve is from a small town he has competed against such big names as Erik Apple and Kyacey Uscola. Each fighter is preparing for a big night and each of them needing to add this win to their record.

Co-Main Event of the night are with some very well known opponents…Mike Cook from Visalia CA vs Carter Williams out of Modesto CA will meet as Heavy Weights as they certainly will be striking and kicking their way to the finish. Mike “The Animal” Cook trains out of Samurai Dojo in Exeter under the tutelage of Scott Harper and also trains with Frank Shamrock at the Shamrock Martial Arts Academy in San Jose. Mike participated in a reality TV show on BET called Iron Rings in which he emerged the final victor. Mike will have more on his hands than ever though as he takes on Carter “The Beast” Williams. Carter is from K-1 Kick Boxing fame and won the 2003 K-1 Grand Prix Championship in Japan with a second round knockout over Bjorn Bregy. Carter has notable wins against Charlid “Die” Faust, Nobu Hayashi, Big Daddy Gary Goodrich, Dewey Cooper, Michael McDonald and Rick Rofous in the K-1 as well as a kickboxing win over PureCombat veteran, Scott Lighty.

On the card also is John “The Wild Child” Reedy coming in on a 4 fight winning streak and going up against Preston Scharf. John is a PureCombat veteran who fought Dominique ‘The Fallen Angel” Robinson to a decision December 1, 2007. John is equally good on the ground and on his feet and can mean trouble for anyone that meets him in the cage. But John will definitely have one of his toughest opponents yet in Preston Scharf. Preston holds a win over Cleber Lucianno, founder of the Cleber BJJ Academies and first place winner of the Black Belt Division in the 2006 World Championships of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

For another big fight of the night we’ve got a Central California favorite Jesse Bowen from STACT House in Merced fighting Maurice Eazel from Antonio McKee’s school, The Body Shop. Jesse is another veteran fighter of PureCombat and this will make it number 4. Jesse is extremely talented wrestler and can stand and bang too. Jesse has proven to have all the gas needed to go all the way to the end as well as impossible to Knock Out. Maurice also has a lot of talent and is well rounded but with a trainer like Antonio McKee with a record of 21-3 and a submission master, Jesse is definitely being taken out to deep water with this fight. I would be looking for the Best Submission of the Night and one of these guys earning that $500 bonus check.

With another Central Valley son, Josh Herrick on the card ready to fight Zach Trammell and keep his winning streak going. Josh is 3-0 and trains at Elite MMA in Visalia, a Cleber BJJ Academy. Zach Trammell trains at Elite Combat in Lodi CA and was a state wrestler. Zach 3-1, brings heavy hands and his extremely good ground game to this fight. Both of these fighters have a lot to hang on to..their winning records.

Other bouts on the card are Chad Sutton vs Eli Moreno, Joe Morales vs Carlos De Soto, Mike Craddock vs Hector Alartorre, Ben Holscher vs Tim Denham, Dan Pinedo vs TBD, Nikk Covert vs Joe Rojas, Darren Crisp vs Isaiah Hill and Alejandro Bautista vs Rico Altamirano.

PROVIDENCE (February 18, 2009) – Professional boxing returns March 6 to historic Plymouth as Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES) promotes “Mayflower Madness” at Memorial Hall.

“Mayflower Madness” is the first in a 4-fight arrangement, “The Radisson Hotel Plymouth Harbor Fight Series,” scheduled in 2009 at Plymouth Memorial Hall and promoted by CES.

“We’re looking at three or four home bases and all we’ve studied had to be interested in wanted us,” CES president Jimmy Burchfield said at today’s press conference held on the steps of Memorial Hall. “We found that management here at Memorial Hall wants CES to promote fights here in Plymouth. We very happy to have signed an exclusive deal here for boxing and now it’s up to Plymouth to show it wants major league boxing here. We’re all confident of making it work here.”

New Bedford police officer Jason “School Boy” Pires, former USBA champion and 1996 U.S. Olympic Team Alternate, headlines in an 8-round welterweight bout against former IBF Intercontinental champion Louie Leija. Pires (21-3, 9 KOs), returning from a 5 ½ year lay-off to complete his education at the U. of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and become a police officer, won a 6-round decision against Frank Houghtaling last November. Leija (21-9-1, 15 KOs), fighting out of San Antonio, has been in against some of the world’s top fighters such as Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Ben Tackie, and Jesus Chavez. Leija’s cousin is former WBC super bantamweight champion Jessie James “The Texas Tornado” Leija.

Former New Bedford fighter Paul “The Truth” Delgado (19-8-1, 4 KOs), now based in Atlanta, returns to Massachusetts for a 6-round welterweight bout versus Troy Smith (6-9-3, 0 KOs), of Brockton. Delgado has faced the iron during his 10-year pro career, including Paulie Malignaggi (twice), Dmitry Salita and Demetrius Hopkins.

Light heavyweights Manuel Antonio Lopes (4-0-1, 1 KO), of Marshfield (MA), and Bridgewater State College graduate Mical Weisberg (1-0, 1 KO), of Stoughton (MA), are fighting in separate 4-round matches against opponents to be determined.

Also fighting on the undercard in 4-round fights are unbeaten Lynn (MA) junior bantamweight Isander “Peachy” Beauchamp (5-0-1, 2 KOs) against Elton Dharry (2-4-1), of Brooklyn, Providence junior middleweight Kali Reiss (1-0, 1 KO) versus pro debuting Alexsandra Magdziak Lopes. Alexsandra is married to Manuel Lopes’ father, Wayne, who’ll be working the corners for his wife and son. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

World Championship Fighting to Debut New Television Program: WCF Rewind on Comcast SportsNet New England

[Boston, MA] February 19th, 2009- World Championship Fighting, New England’s leading mixed martial arts promotion is pleased to announce that it has produced its first television program, WCF Rewind, which will debut on Comcast SportsNet New England on Sunday, March 1st at 6:30 PM. The show will be rebroadcast on Monday, March 2nd at 9:00 PM, and again on Sunday, March 8th at 9:30 PM.

The half-hour program, filmed at WCF#4, features intimate and gritty portraits of some of the region’s most exciting up and coming mixed martial artists as they prepare for bouts.

The premier episode, which will be presented by title sponsor Kelly’s House of Harley Davidson, demonstrates the diversity of MMA as one of New England’s most decorated amateur wrestlers, Matthew Smith from Danville, NH, takes on Josh Spearman, a tough MMA veteran from Providence, RI now residing in Lynn, MA. In very candid pre-fight segments, Spearman credits MMA for keeping him off the streets and out of jail. Smith claims that he and Spearman were former teammates and that there is no love lost between them.

In the second segment, undefeated Local 7 Ironworker John Beniot (5-0) drops down in weight to take on Davin Wesinger (4-1) from Whittensville, MA in a 155 lb clash. Each fighter is profiled as they work out in two of New England’s premier MMA schools. Beniot trains out of MMA-legend Renzo Gracie’s gym in New Hampshire and Wesinger out of UFC Fighter Jorge Rivera’s USMMA in Bellingham, MA Their bout is one of the more boisterous of the night as they both have significant crowd support.

The show’s final segment and main event features hard-hitting Dan Bonnell (6-4) taking on Joe Cushman (10-2) in a pivotal bout for dominance of the WCF 145 lb division. Cushman credits his training with renowned UFC Fighters Joe and Dan Lauzon at their gym in East Bridgewater for getting him prepared. Wilmington native Bonnell promises a slug-fest, and both fighters deliver in the most explosive fight of the night.

“Mixed martial arts is growing in popularity and WFC Rewind will give fans across New England a unique look at some of the region’s up and coming fighters,” said Bill Bridgen, Comcast SportsNet executive vice president and general manager.

SEVEN FORMER WORLD CHAMPIONS FEATURED ON UNPRECEDENTED LIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION EVENT

LOS ANGELES, February 20, 2009 – Perhaps the most talent rich division in boxing, the lightweight class, will be on center stage at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas on Saturday, April 4th, as Golden Boy Promotions presents “Lightweight Lightning,” an unprecedented four bout, lightweight pay-per-view event that will feature eight elite 135-pounders in four pivotal match-ups that will undoubtedly re-arrange the hierarchy of the highly competitive 135 pound division in one night.

In the “Lightweight Lightning” main event, revered and undefeated knockout artist Edwin Valero (24-0, 24 KOs) from Venezuela returns to the ring to face hard-hitting Colombian warrior Antonio Pitalua (46-3, 40 KOs) in a 12-round championship bout for the vacant WBC Interim World Lightweight crown.

One of the co-featured bouts prior to the main event will be a 10- round clash between former two-time World Champion and Olympic gold medalist, Cuban-born Joel Casamayor (36-4-1, 22 KOs) against the talented former World Champion and California native Julio Diaz (36-4, 26 KOs). As their records reflect, these two evenly matched pugilists, with similarly impressive knock-out ratios, will vie for dominance in what many pundits anticipate to be a barn-burner of a fight.

The third co-featured bout sees Austin’s own Jesus Chavez (44-4, 30 KOs), a crowd-pleasing former Lightweight World Champion who is looking to capture a victory at home when he faces rugged and relentless Australian Michael Katsidis (24-2, 20KOs) who will look to give fight fans the type of “Arturo Gatti-like” performance that have become his trademark.

Rounding out “Lightweight Lightning” will be the always charismatic and entertaining Argentinean Jorge Barrios (47-4-1, 34 KOs) against another Lone Star State fighter, former World Champion Carlos Hernandez (43-7-1, 24 KOs), in a 10-round match-up that will open the pay-per-view telecast that evening.

The lightweight division is going to be shaken up on April 4th and every one of these fighters knows his career can only advance if he comes out victorious that night…a loss for any of them would be devastating.”

“Lightweight Lightning,” which is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Southwest Airlines, will air live on pay-per-view beginning at 9pm ET / 6pm PT with a suggested retail price of $39.95.

One of the hardest punchers in boxing, pound-for-pound, Venezuela’s Edwin Valero is making the leap from 130 pounds, where he held the WBA World Championship title for over two years, to the lightweight division where he hopes to win another world championship. A 27-year old southpaw, Valero won his first 18 bouts via first round knockout, making him an instant fan favorite. On April 4th, he will be looking to make a statement in the lightweight division.

“I look forward to extending my knockout streak for my American fans,” said Valero. “Moving up to another division in the hope of capturing my second world title gives me all the incentive I need to train hard. As always, I’m hungry for a knockout, so on April 4th everyone can expect a victory by knockout over Antonio Pitalua.”

A native of Monteria, Colombia who now makes his home in Mexico City, 38-year-old veteran Antonio Pitalua has been on an unstoppable hot streak over the last seven years having registered 14 fights without a loss over that span. Fresh off a devastating sixth round knockout victory over highly-touted Jose Armando Santa Cruz last September, Pitalua promises that he will make good on his first world title shot since 2000.

“I don’t think it’s any secret that when the bell rings April 4th, the fight with me and Valero is going to be a war,” said Pitalua. “We both have great punching power, but unfortunately for him, I know I can take his punch and I don’t think he is going to be able to take mine.”

The finest Cuban fighter of the modern era, Joel “El Cepillo” Casamayor has captured the imagination of fight fans for almost two decades. A 1992 Olympic Gold Medalist, the slick southpaw went on to win junior lightweight and lightweight world titles, beating the likes of Diego Corrales, Michael Katsidis, Roberto Garcia and Nate Campbell along the way.

“I’ve had a nice little break, but now it’s time to get back to work,” said Casamayor. “My title is waiting for me and I’m going to take it back in 2009. First things first though, I have to take care of my business with Julio Diaz.”

A member of the fighting Diaz family, Julio “Kidd” Diaz is hoping to celebrate his 10th year as a pro with another world championship in 2009. The 29 year-old former IBF World Lightweight Champion from Coachella, California has won six of his last seven bouts, including four by knockout and is expecting a war from Casamayor on April 4th.

“This is a great night for boxing and it’s going to be a great night for me,” said Diaz. “Casamayor is one of the best in the world and beating him is going to put me right back on top…I can’t wait.”

One of boxing’s most inspirational figures, Austin’s Jesus “El Matador” Chavez is two wins into his comeback after rehabbing a serious knee injury. A Former World Champion at 130 and 135 pounds who owns wins over Tom Johnson, Carlos Hernandez and Leavander Johnson, Chavez is coming off a ninth round TKO of Andres Ledesma last September.

“I’m happy to have the opportunity to make another run at a world title,” said Chavez. “Katsidis is an exciting young fighter and I know he will come prepared, but April 4th is going to be my night to shine, as I am going to be fighting for the whole state of Texas and all of my hometown fans who will be there to support me.”

The pride of Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, 28-year-old Michael Katsidis is one of the rare fighters who has been able to carry his popularity overseas and to the United States. An all-action, blood and guts warrior and former WBO World Lightweight Champion whose only pro losses have come in competitive bouts against Juan Diaz and Joel Casamayor, Katsidis recently got back in the win column with a ten round win over Angel Hugo Ramirez. He now looks to add to his victory total with his trademark exciting style against Chavez on April 4th.

“I miss holding a world title and I know the road back goes through Jesus Chavez,” said Katsidis. “He’s a great fighter and champion, but on fight night, I will walk through fire to make sure my hand is raised in victory.”

An Argentinean warrior from Tigre, Jorge “La Hiena” Barrios never leaves the ring without giving all he’s got. A Former WBO World Junior Lightweight Champion who defended his title twice, Barrios is now in search of bigger game at 135 pounds and is looking forward to making Hernandez his first victim.

“I think 135 pounds is going to be the best weight for me,” said Barrios. “I’m hitting harder than ever as a lightweight and I know Hernandez won’t be able to get past the sixth round with me on April 4th.”

The greatest fighter to ever come out of El Salvador, national hero Carlos “Famoso” Hernandez wants to give his countrymen something to cheer about again on April 4th. Now living in the Lone Star State, “Famoso” has been working with Texas great Jesse James Leija to prepare for this upcoming challenge. Hernandez made a triumphant return to the ring in August of 2008 after nearly two years away with a win over Hector Alatorre and it’s clear that Hernandez still has plenty in the tank for a title run.

“It was great getting back in the ring last August and since then, I’ve been living in the gym,” said Hernandez. “My timing is where I want it to be, I feel faster and stronger than ever and Barrios is going to be in for a surprise when that bell rings on April 4th.”

Anna Cummings Named February High School Wrestler of the Month Becoming First Female Award Recipient

Des Moines, IA- February 20, 2009- TakeDown Radio is proud to announce a first in the world’s oldest sport. Anna Cummings, a 19 year old Senior at Onondaga Central High School in Nedrow, NY has been named the February TDR National High School Wrestler of the Month. The 103 lb. Cummings is the first girl in the Section III category in New York to place in Sectionals, the first Section III girl to attain 100 wins, and the second in state history for wins by a girl.

Anna has been Wrestling Team Captain for two years, as well Captain of the Soccer Team. She is the Student Representative for wrestling on the schools Athletic Club,committed to assisting fellow athletes, and volunteers in her community to help those less fortunate than her. She regularly provides instruction to other female wrestlers and provides significant time assisting in the local Pee Wee wrestling program. She’s attended numerous wrestling camps and clinics for the past five years, and has traveled to Canada, Puerto Rico, and Germany on behalf of wrestling.

A member of the Honor Roll, Anna’s favorite subjects include Advanced Math and Independent Study in Technology. In addition to top academic performance, and an impressive athletic record, Anna is very visible in numerous civic endeavors. She has contributed to bettering the lives of others with the Salvation Army, a local food pantry, volunteer fire department, and was instrumental in raising money for a local wrestler that was temporarily paralyzed in a wrestling accident.
