Hello Everyone,

As you may or may not know I am one of the coaches for California Pride Boxing Club. California Pride Boxing Club is a member in good standing with USA Boxing and fields a team of 9 amateur boxers. We have had another great year and we need your help to keep our boxing club going strong and finish this season with one more dynamite performance. Active participation in Boxing teaches young adults, teenagers,and children valuable lessons in leadership, work ethic, teamwork and sportsmanship. Our boxer’s education and talents have shown through with our team’s dedication and commitment to excellence in and out of the ring.

California Pride Boxing Club has had a successful tournament year with our first tournament performance at the Golden Gloves where we won 132lb. and 141lb. novice division championship. We advanced to the semi-finals 132lb. open division and to the finals for the 152lb. open division. In july we competed in the Desert Showdown boxing tournament where we won 4 championships. Those championships were won in the boys 100lb. division, mens novice 201+lb. division, 141lb. mens open division,and 110. women’s division. We also went to the novice 125lb. finals and the semi finals of the 132lb. open division in that tournament. 4 out of our 7 boxers that competed left as Desert Showdown Champions. Also we entered the Police Athletic league National boxing tournament located in Oxnard, CA. This was a significant tournament because the winners of the Open Division will automatically advance to the USA national championships and olympic trials. We fought the
best of United States and placed in the semi finals in the 132lb. and 141lb. weight division.

California Pride Boxing Club would like to finish this year at the Gene Lewis National Boxing Tournament in Mesa, AZ. The tournament is from Nov. 13th thru the 15th. This is another opportunity to fight the best fighters from around the United States but we need your help. Any donations no matter the amount is needed because as with any active competing sports team, there are many expenses incurred by the team throughout the season. Uniforms, boxing equipment, supplies, traveling expenses and tournament fees are just the beginning. All of our team members are encouraged to participate in our fundraisers and sponsorship drives to help offset these expenses. Below is a cost breakdown of the trip so you can see where your sponsorship monies will go to.

659.40- Hotel expenses- 3 hotel rooms for 4 days.
348.00- 12 person passenger van for 5 days.
225.00- gas for round trip. total of 658 miles divide by 15 miles per gallon plus any misc. driving that may occur.
109.99- 2 boxes of gauze for wrapping fighters hands
35.97- 1 box of tape for wrapping fighters hands

At this time the boxers, myself and the head coach Juan West are unable to fund this trip ourselves. Your support is critical to the success of our program at this tournament. TOM DONELSON’S POST-FIGHT THOUGHTS ON PETER VS. KLITSCHKO AND DAWSON VS. TARVER

My thoughts on Peter and Dawson, enjoy,

Samuel Peter was that one heavyweight that seemed to generate excitement simply because he could knock people out with one punch and almost stopped Wladimir Klitschko in a fight that he was losing and eventually lost. When he fought Vitali Klitschko, he was hoping to use this as a jumping point to face Wladimir one more time. The stars aligned in his favor as Vitali had not fought in four years and suffered injuries that prevented past comebacks. At the age of 37, Vitali Klitschko was trying to recover lost times and in boxing; that is a rarity.

In the first round, something became obvious; Klitschko’s jab dominated the action. Peter look befuddled and had no apparent game plan to get inside and force the issue with a fighter who had not seen action in four years. Klitschko looked like he never left the ring and his jab punctured Peter’s face and when the jab wasn’t hitting Peter, the left hook was, and if the left hook wasn’t hitting Peter’s face, the right cross was. Klitschko punches rarely missed and Peter defense consisted of blocking punches with his face; hardly the kind of strategy that wins against the Klitschko brothers.

With each round, Peter’s eyes were swelling shut. His right eye swelled because of Klitschko’s left jab and Peter’s left eye swelled because of the Klitschko’s right cross. After the eighth round, Peter’s corner did not allow Peter go back in the ring and there wasn’t any purpose. Peter hardly protested and appeared to be in agreement for the only way Peter was going to win was by knockout. Klitschko’s brothers now own the heavyweight divisions.

As for Peter, his career has run into a serious obstacle. Peter own inconsistency is becoming apparent as he has yet to show that he has grown as a fighter. In the second Toney fight and against Oleg Maskaev, Peter showed improvement but against Jameel McCline and Vitali Klitschko, he showed regression. In his lost to Vitali Klitschko, Peter did not jab often and rarely found a way to penetrate Klitschko’s jab and throughout the fight, he was the slower puncher despite being nine year younger. As a fighter, Peter is what Peter is; a heavyweight with limited skills and a big punch. Against taller boxer punchers like the Klitschko’s and McCline, he has trouble. As long as the Klitschkos are at the top of the division, Peter will not become the recognized champion of the heavyweights.

Antonio Tarver looked in the mirror and what he saw was Chad Dawson. Both fighters were similar heights and both were southpaw. Dawson was the more aggressive fighter and armed with nice body shots and Tarver had the classic straight one two punch but both were boxers and both were punchers. Tarver saw across the ring and saw a younger version of himself.

In the first round, one thing became obvious; Tarver could not match Dawson for hand speed and Dawson’s punch had more pop. While the final scores was a one sided decision for Dawson; the fight was not only entertaining but many rounds were close. Tarver stayed active over the twelve rounds but he often seemed just a split second behind.

And there were times that the old veteran reminded the youngster that he still had something. In the third round, Tarver nailed Dawson with a right uppercut and a straight left to take the round. Dawson appeared shaken and this reminded Dawson that Tarver was still dangerous.

In the fourth round, Dawson returned the favor as his quick combinations stunned Tarver briefly. In the sixth round, Dawson played possum as he allowed Tarver to chase him all over the ring. Tarver connected on a few shots but for the most part; Dawson was contented to play defense.

Sixth through the tenth round, Dawson hand speed proved to be difference as he unleashed four and five punch combinations. Tarver tried but he could not match Dawson hand speed. In the eleventh, Tarver knew that he had to knock Dawson out to win the fight and he chased Dawson once again. In a close round, Tarver may have squeezed out the round in his column but going into the final round; he was too far behind to win a decision. In the opening seconds of the twelfth, a Dawson right hook sent Tarver down but Tarver was more surprised than hurt as Dawson’s punch caught Tarver off balanced. Tarver then showed why he was a three time champion. He put himself in a higher gear and started to score on Dawson but Dawson hung on and the knockdown merely put a punctuation point to his victory.

Dawson gave up his WBC championship belt to fight Tarver and while the WBC played politics with Dawson’s career, Dawson did what was right; he fought one of the best light heavyweights in the world and he got paid a lot more than what he would have received by fighting his mandatory. Which leaves us with the question, what’s next? Dawson next big money potential bout is a fight with the winner of Joe Calzaghe-Roy Jones bout in November. As for Tarver, he showed that he has the talent to be among the elites but on this night, he was just one step slower than his youthful opponent. In the Peter-Klitschko, skill and experience proved vital but in the Tarver-Dawson; youth prevailed

Lauzon visiting U.S. troops in Iraq

E. BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (October 13, 2008) – UFC lightweight contender Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon, 17-4, 4 KOs, 13 submissions), star of The Ultimate Fighter 5 television reality show, leaves tomorrow on a 10-day goodwill trip visiting U.S. military troops in Iraq.

Fellow mixed-martial arts fighters Jorge Rivera and Heath Herring are among the other athletes on the trip. “It’s going to be an amazing experience,” 24-year-old Lauzon said. “I can’t wait to go overseas and see the troops in Iraq.”

HAMMOND, Ind. (Oct. 11, 2008) – Promising, unbeaten heavyweight Dave “Pee Wee’’ Herman of Bloomington, Ind., improved to 12-0 with a 1:06, first-round TKO over Kerry “Meat Truck’’ Schall (21-11) of Cincinnati, Ohio, in the main event Friday on ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series.

Los Angeles-based ProElite, Inc.’s live fight division, EliteXC presented the crowd-pleasing event from the Horseshoe Casino outside Chicago. It aired on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

ShoXC, a presentation of Los Angeles-based ProElite, Inc.’s live fight division, EliteXC, showcases young, talented fighters in tough matchups. A springboard for the future stars and champions of EliteXC, ShoXC is patterned after the SHOWTIME boxing series ShoBox: The New Generation.

Schall got Herman’s attention with a huge overhand right hand approximately a half-minute in.

But the shot only seemed to invigorate and anger Herman, who retaliated with a vengeance. He connected with a series of knees that dropped Schall and then finished off the veteran, who complained afterward about a low blow, with three punches while he was down and defenseless.

“I may have got hit, but I didn’t feel it,’’ said Herman, who improved to 3-0 for EliteXC and 2-0 on SHOWTIME. “I don’t care who I fight next but I hope it is as soon as possible. Actually, I would like to fight on the EliteXC Nov. 8 card on SHOWTIME.’’

Anthony “The Recipe’’ Lapsley (14-3), 170 ½, Fort Wayne, Ind., majority decision (30-27 twice and 29-29) over game, tough Mike Stumpf (10-2), 172 ½, Crystal Lake, Ill. Noteworthy: The fight was Lapsley’s 17th in his 28-month pro career … Stumpf, making his EliteXC and SHOWTIME debut, had a four-fight winning streak end. Quote-worthy: “Mike was definitely one of the toughest guys I’ve fought, but I was never hurt and if I lost a round, I couldn’t tell you which one,’’ Lapsley said. “I add an ingredient each time I fight. Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko (30-5), 184 ½, Omsk, Russia, TKO 2, over Robert “Bubba” McDaniel (12-5), 183 ½, Wichita Falls, Tex. McDaniel seemed to control a hard-fought, close first round, but was nailed with a flying knee to the chest in the closing second. He collapsed to the canvas, but could not make it to his feet during the break. The bell sounded for the second round, but McDaniel was still down and the fight was stopped. Noteworthy: The victory was Shlemenko’s seventh straight, all inside the distance and all in the first or second round. Quote-worthy: “The fight didn’t go exactly like I planned,’’ the winner said. “It was my first fight after a layoff and I was nervous. He was a good opponent.’’

Lyle “Fancy Pants’’ Beerbohm (8-0), 161 ½, Spokane, Wash., TKO 1 (cuts), over Brazilian Rafaello “Tractor” Oliveira (5-1), Nashville, Tenn. After an exciting five minutes of non-stop action, the fight was stopped due to a severe cut over Oliveira’s left eye. Quote-worthy: “I don’t care who wins the fight between Nick Diaz and Eddie Alvarez. Polish Bullit Knockout stage a triple header October 18 in Zabrze. On top WBC Youth jr middle champ Damian Jonak take on Finn Mika Joensuu in a fight that is also for the WBC Baltic Seas title. Heavyweight Andrzey Wawrzyk face Dutchman Harry Duiven, Jr, for the vacant WBC Youth title and in the third headliner cruiser Tomasz Hutkowski is in against Georgian Sandro Sipishvili, also for the WBC Youth title.

EBU champ Marco Huck makes a voluntary defence of the title against Italian Fabio Tuiach October 25 in Oldenburg in a co-headliner to Kessler vs Haussler.

WBA heavy champ Nikolay Valuev´s next defence will go ahead December 6, 13 or 20 in a German speaking country. As for opponent Evander Holyfield is in the picture but other names are discussed as well.

Sauerland Event supply the fighters to a show in Berlin tonight with welter Frank Shabani headlining against Russian Roman Seliverstov, who comes in fresh off a win against Michel Trabant. Heavyweight Rene Dettweiler is in against Hungarian Viktor Szalai.

P 3 Boxing have reportedly secured a very good yet to be named former lightweight champ as opponent for Russian jr welter prospect Dennis Shafikov November 28 in Helsinki in a supporting bout to Asikainen vs Gevor. The show – set for the Hartwall Arena – have already sold 4000 tickets and the venue can seat up to 12 000 including some dinner guests.

Ukrainian lightheavy Vyacheslav Uzelkov will fight a WBA eliminator. According to K 2 East, who promotes Uzelkov the opponent could be either American Yusuf Mack or Frenchman Rachid Kanfouah.

K 2 East have their next show – called “Golden Boxing Tournament” – scheduled for Cherkasy October 25. Jr welter Sergey Fedchenko and cruiser Vitaly Rusal headlines, both in intercontinental titlefights.

EBU jr welter champ Gianluca Branco defends the title against Finn Juho Tolppola November 21 in Italy. Contracts for the fight were not signed as of last night (Oct 9) but the deal is said to be done and the EBU have it up on their website.

Belorus heavyweight Alexander Ustinov, a big man, face an even bigger, or at least taller, man in American Julius Long on the undercard to Klitschko vs Peter tomorrow. K 2 East have also announced that Ustinov is next is looking to fight for the obscure EBA title.

Manfredo-Bika IBO world title fight headlines “Tough & Tested”

Brewer-Bundrage IBO title eliminator in co-feature

PROVIDENCE (October 10, 2008) – Tickets go on sale Wednesday (Oct. 15 at 10 AM/ET) for the November 13th “Tough & Tested” pro boxing show, headlined by an IBO super middleweight title fight between “The Pride of Providence” Peter Manfredo, Jr., runner-up in Season One of The Contender, and Sakio “The Scorpian” Bika, winner of Season Three of The Contender, at the newly renovated Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island.

“Tough & Tested,” co-promoted by the Tournament of Contenders and Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), will air nationally live on Versus television. “Tough & Tested” will feature at least five fighters who are “Contender” alumni: Manfredo and Bika in the main event, Grady “Bad Boy” Brewer, winner of Season Two of The Contender, versus fan favorite in Season Two of The Contender, Cornelius “K9” Bundrage, in the IBO light middleweight title eliminator co-feature; runner-up in Season Three of The Contender, Jaidon “The Don” Codrington, in a super middleweight Special Attraction.

“CES, The Contender, Peter and Sakio all want to celebrate the grand re-opening of ‘The Dunk’ by bringing in the IBO world championship title fight between Manfredo and Bika,” promoter Jimmy Burchfield said. “This will be the first pro boxing show at the new Dunkin’ Donuts Center as well as the first major world title fight held there in 17 years, since Vinny Paz stopped Gilbert Dele (at the Providence Civic Center as it was known then) in the 12th round for the WBA light middleweight belt. Manfredo versus Bika is going to be a very tough fight. We also have a good co-feature, the Brewer-Bundrage IBO title eliminator, and we’re putting together a strong, competitive and entertaining undercard starting with Codrington.

“We all want to give something back, too. ‘Tough & Tested’ will benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation (www.gloriagemma.org). We’re calling for a ‘Pink Out’ (everybody wearing something colored pink) to show support for this great cause. A portion of the proceeds from ticket and T-shirt sales will go to the Gloria Gemma Foundation for research into early breast cancer detection.”

Manfredo and Bika have combined to fight in four world title fights and one of them will walk away with the IBO world title belt on Nov. 13.

Sakio Bika went the distance in two world championship fights and won The Contender, Season Three in what many believed was the Fight of the Year against Codrington. Bika’s also an exciting fighter. Manfredo and Bika should be dynamite.

“Grady Brewer won Season Two of The Contender against Steve Forbes, who has gone on to fight Oscar De La Hoya and Andre Berto. His opponent, ‘K9’ Bundrage, just beat former world champion Kasim Ouma. Manfredo (31-5, 16 KOs), the reigning NABF Interim champion, is the WBC No. 13 rated super middleweight. Fighting in front of his hometown fans, “The Pride of Providence” sports a perfect 16-0 (10 KOs) record in Rhode Island, including 3-0 (3 KOs) in the same Providence building as his Nov. 13th showdown against Bika. Manfredo’s five pro career losses have all come at the hands of world champions.

IBF Pan Pacific super middleweight title-holder Bika, a 2000 Cameroon Olympian now fighting out of Australia, won The Contender III with a dramatic eighth round stoppage of Bridgeport, Connecticut native Codrington (18-2, 14 KOs) in the finale in Boston. Bika, rated No. 5 by the IBF and No. 8 by The Ring magazine, hasn’t been stopped in 31 pro fights.

In the 10-round co-feature, Brewer (23-11, 13 KOs), former IBA light middleweight champion, takes on Bundrage (28-3, 16 KOs), IBF rated No. 13, in the IBO junior middleweight title eliminator.

“BAD” CHAD DAWSON TO WEAR COVGLOVE THIS SATURDAY WHEN HE FIGHTS ANTONIO TARVER ON SHOWTIME

PHILADELPHIA (October 10, 2008)—This Saturday night, one of the most anticipated bout of the year happens when IBF Light Heavyweight, Antonio Tarver defends against Chad Dawson in a showdown that has been building for more then a year.

Dawson, 26-0 with seventeen knockouts was the WBC Light Heavyweight champion until he was stripped of the belt in order to participate in this showdown, will be wearing boxing’s latest innovation.

Dawson will be wearing the CovGlove. The CovGlove is a leather sleeve that is placed over the tape and secures the tape from coming loose and interrupting the action in the ring.

CovGlove has been worn in some of the highest profile fights in the recent months.

Joshua Clottey wore the CovGlove in his IBF Welterweight title winning effort over Zab Judah this past August.

Both Alfredo Angulo & Andrey Tsurkan wore the product when the squared off Last Saturday in their Jr. Welterweight affair.
