SYCUAN RINGSIDE PROMOTIONS PROMOTES SUCCESSFUL MIXED MARTIAL ARTS CARD IN THEIR OWN BACKYARD

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Oct. 2, 2008) – Sycuan Ringside Promotions (SRP) is not just a boxing promotional company anymore.
The four-year-old operation that promotes several world champion boxers is now trying its hand at promoting mixed martial arts events.
Thursday night, SRP in association with Total Combat Entertainment presented Total Combat “Notorious” from the Sycuan Resort & Casino, located just fifteen miles east of downtown San Diego, Calif.
The sell-out crowd of 2,800 were treated to an exciting and frenetic main event between welterweights Jesse Taylor and Drew Fickett.
From the start, Taylor had Fickett on his heels which would lead to a quick take down. Once on the ground, Taylor landed heavy shots to Fickett’s head, one of which opened a two-inch gash on his forehead just above his right eye.
Taylor would continue to land shots while Fickett tried to block the assault. The referee stopped the barrage at the 1:42 mark of the first round awarding Taylor the victory via TKO.
“We saw a great and unique vibe today,” said Scott Woodworth, president of SRP. “The fans loved the fights. The energy was out of this world. It’s was raw, intense and powerful. It was fun to sit back and observe the excitement as a fan and as a promoter.
“We sold every seat in the house. We were turning people away at the box office. I can say that future MMA shows are in the works here at Sycuan. We now have a successful model to build from.”
In the co-main event, Ian McCall of Laguna Nigel, Calif. won a unanimous decision against San Diego-native Kevin Dunsmoor in a three round bantamweight bout.

Marshall signs with PFC, scheduled to fight Del Real

LEMOORE, Calif. — As if the announcement this week of a pivotal Palace Fighting Championship flyweight showdown between Las Vegas, Nev. grappler Ulysses Gomez and Thailand superstar Rambaa Somdet wasn’t enough.
President Christian Printup decided to take the PFC to another level on Thursday, announcing the signing of former World Extreme Cagefighting Light Heavyweight champion Doug Marshall.
The Visalia, Calif. mixed martial artist has made the move down to middleweight and will face Central Valley rival Rafael Del Real on November 20 at PFC 11.
“This is a fight that has been a long time in the making. Regardless of what either guy will say I don’t think they’ve ever cared for each other. There could be some jealousy. There could be some envy. There could be a lot of things,” Printup said. “But I can guarantee that there will be a lot of heated exchanges in the ring during this bout. I don’t see either man wanting this fight to go to the score cards, this is the ultimate bragging rights fight for Central California and I know both men will be looking for the KO.”
Marshall (8-3) made his PFC debut in June with a technical knockout victory over Merced’s Phil Collins (6-4). He’s been a staple of the WEC and known as one of the more energetic fighters from Central California. He’s put on some epic battles in both Las Vegas and Lemoore.
“I know what I’m getting into, Doug’s a great fighter but I have the key to beating him. I’ve seen all of his fights. I wanted to fight him back in the day, but it got put on hold or whatever,” said Del Real a Tulare, Calif. native. “He can’t withstand my punching power at middleweight. His chin is suspect ever since he moved down from heavyweight. My career has had it’s ups and downs and I took a lot of fights I probably shouldn’t have, but I guarantee in this one I’m going to hit him hard and often and he’s not going to know what happened until the doctors wake him up.”
Del Real (5-10) has lost four of his last five fights, but has been a big draw locally.
“Well, I was going to fight Rafael as a heavyweight and he backed out. Now at 185 he thinks he has a chance? That’s a joke. It doesn’t matter what weight we meet at the Rhino is going to bring the fight like he always does. I’ll be the one serving up a KD (knocked dead).”

Printup also recently confirmed some upcoming rumored bouts on cards through February.
On October 23, the PFC will feature four bouts on a night of World Championship boxing at the Palace. In the main event, Lemoore, Calif. light heavyweight Mike Martinez (3-2) takes on city rival Brandon Lorenz (1-0). Also featured on the card is a featherweight showdown between PFC champ Jorge Evangelista (7-2-1) of Fresno, Calif. and Las Vegas, Nev.’s David Smith (4-1) in a non-title fight.
In prelims, Oakland, Calif. featherweight Jimmy Jarquin (2-2) vs. TBA and Visalia, Calif. heavyweight Rocky Molina (1-2) takes on Madera, Calif.’s Joaquin Sanchez (3-1).
The next PFC show is sure to bring some drama, as a few fights have been confirmed by Printup that have major title implications.
Most notably is a rematch for the PFC World Light Heavyweight title between Brazil’s Jorge Oliveira (3-2-1) and St. Paul, Min.’s Isaiah Larson (6-1). The pair fought to a no-contest at PFC 9 in June.
Making his PFC debut will be Las Vegas, Nev. featherweight Eddie Yagin (11-3-1) against Oroville, Calif.’s Shawn Bias (13-6) and UFC veteran Gabe Ruediger (11-5) of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. is set to take on Fairbanks, Alaska’s Scott McAfee (5-1).
In a match that will get some international interest, Oakland, Calif. lightweight Dominique Robinson (13-2-1) takes on Japan’s Takumi Nakayama (13-11-4).
Hanford, Calif. featherweight Chad Mendes (1-0) is expected to be in action in both November and February. Mendes, who was a runner up at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in 2008, is considered by many to be one of the PFC’s most coveted prospects.
On January 22 the Palace will host PFC 12. PFC Lightweight champ Brian Cobb (13-4) of Bakersfield, Calif. will take on Ensenada, Mexico’s Olaf Alfonso (7-9) for the belt.
Also rumored to be on the card are brothers Jorge and Billy Evangelista (7-0) of Fresno, Calif. PFC Welterweight champ Bryan Travers (11-1) of Bakersfield, Calif. will also be in action.

NEWARK, N.J.—International Boxing Federation cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham (21-1, 11 KOs) will meet Polish-born former world champion Tomasz Adamek (35-1, 24 KOs) at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on Thursday, Dec. 11.
Tickets priced at $303, $153, $78, $53, $38 go on sale on Monday at 11 a.m. and can be purchased by calling TicketMaster at 201-507-8900.
The event, with full undercard, is being co-promoted by Main Events and Don King Productions.
A classic boxer-puncher, Cunningham will be making the second defense of his IBF 200-pound limit crown, which he won by defeating Krzystztof Wlodarczyk in Poland on May 26, 2007. Six months earlier, Cunningham suffered the sole loss of his career in a controversial split decision won by Wlodarczyk when the two squared off for the vacant IBF championship.
Cunningham also scored notable wins against former IBF cruiserweight champion Kelvin “Koncrete” Davis and Panamanian strongman Guillermo Jones, who recently took the World Boxing Association cruiserweight championship from Firat Arslan on Sept. 27.
Adamek burst upon the boxing scene in his first fight in America against Australian Paul “Hurricane” Briggs for the vacant World Boxing Council light heavyweight championship at the United Center in Chicago on May 21, 2005. Their 12-round slugfest, which Adamek won by majority decision, was one of the better fights of that year.
The inevitable rematch came the following year and rivaled the first match in its brutal intensity. Again, Adamek won by majority decision.
Adamek’s lone loss came against undefeated “Bad” Chad Dawson in Kissimmee, Fla., on Feb. 3, 2007. The slick Dawson built a scorecard lead that Adamek came close to erasing when he landed his vaunted right-hand power shot and sent Dawson to the canvas in the 10th round. Dawson literally held on to Adamek to narrowly escape the round and survived to win the match by decision.
Adamek catapulted himself into position to face Cunningham by scoring an eighth round technical knockout on April 19 over O’Neil “Supernova” Bell, who in 2006 became the first undisputed cruiserweight world champion since Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield held that distinction in 1988.

IBF middleweight fight headlines Saturday’s PPV in U.S. & Canada
BAMBERG, Germany (October 1, 2008) — IBF middleweight champion “King” Arthur Abraham (27-0, 22 KOs) and mandatory challenger Raul “El Diamente” Marquez (41-3, 29 KOs) voiced their respect for each other at today´s press conference in Bamberg, Germany.
Saturday’s Abraham-Marquez headlined card is promoted by Wilfried Sauerland, presented by Sauerland Event and its Managing Director, Christian Meyer, in association with Seminole Warriors Boxing. “King Arthur” will be out to please his home fans – Bamberg is the city where he started boxing – for a second time in 17 months. Back in May 2007, in his first fight after breaking his jaw against Edison Miranda, the 28-year-old knocked out Sebastian Demers in the third round. But “King Arthur” knows that Marquez will be a much tougher opponent. “He is fast, mobile and clever,” Abraham assessed. “In other words: He is a really good boxer. That will be a tough challenge for me. In my last mandatory title defense I stopped Khoren Gevor but Marquez is much stronger than him.”
Abraham’s head trainer, Ulli Wegner, also is full of praise for the former world champion. “I’ve know Marquez for a long, long time,” he remarked. “I saw him at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. During the times of the GDR, he once fought against one of our guys. Ten years ago he was world champion and he has gotten stronger and more experienced since then. Many people were surprised to see him beat Lorenzo in the eliminator, but not me. Arthur will be in for a hard battle but I expect him to succeed.”
