We come closer to the beginning of what looks to be a very exciting season indeed. We’ll take a closer look as we return to the Brute Adidas studios of Takedown Wrestling Radio this Saturday from 9 AM to 11 AM CST. Join Scott Casber, Chris Arns, Steve Foster and Randy Crimmins for 2 fun filled informative hours.

Can’t catch it live? No worries, TDR is now pod casting it’s shows and have always offered archives for you rabid fans who, like me, can’t get enough of this good thing.

Note- I spoke with Cornell wrestler Adam Frey, he’s in the hospital and doing fine sometimes and sometimes not so fine. You might want to reach out to him as our family does and send him a note of encouragement. Funny how things like that help. He’s a good guy and plans to join me mic side for the broadcast of the Bodybar Tournament November 22nd in Ithica, NY.

Jim Martin- PSU Champ back in the day. Lets take a look back in the books and see who was his nemesis, the Achilles heal and what drove him to greatness. Pushed by PSU mentor and champ Carl DeStephanis, Martin climbed many mountains achieving 155 Career victories along the way. He also became a Midlands Champ twice, an NCAA Champ in 1988, EWL Champ, part of the 88′ Lions team that traveled to and defeated the Hawkeyes at Iowa City. Jim has the honor of being the Lions 2nd 4 x All American. He defeated Tom Brands for goodness sake. This cat was something special.

Chris Pendleton- The very core of the OSU Championship team, the rock, the resilience, the moral fiber of the team is what Chris Pendleton weaves and others benefit from his strong convictions. This Cowboy is one in a million.

Josh “The Punk” Thompson- recently Victorious in his MMA battle, now he improves his record to 8 consecutive wins. Josh Thomson talks about his non-title win over Ashe Bowman at Strikeforce at the Playboy Mansion 2 and who he’d like to fight in the future. Record: (16-2-0, 1 NC)

Former World Champion Vivian Harris Headlines “Knockout Knights” at Medieval Times

For Immediate Release~ Lyndhurst, New Jersey (September 22, 2008) – Boxing is back at Medieval Times! Former world champion Vivian Harris will headline “Knockout Knights” when big-time boxing returns to the beautiful Medieval Times Castle in Lyndhurst, NJ on Wednesday, October 29th.

The hard-hitting Harris, a Guyanese native who resides in Brooklyn, New York, has long been on the list of boxing’s most avoided fighters. A pro since 1997, Harris finally made a splash in 2002 when he fought and knocked out Diosbelys Hurtado to win the WBA junior welterweight championship. Harris (28-3-1, 18 KOs), who has always been at the top of the junior welterweight rankings, will look to bounce back after a disappointing loss to Junior Witter in a title bout. The man they call “Vicious” is looking to make a statement in his first fight back in over a year.

“I am forgetting about the past. I am rededicated to making it back to the top. My first step will be to make a big statement on October 29.”

The co-main event will feature hometown hero Wayne “Lights Out” Johnsen (17-3, 9 KOs). Johnsen is also on the comeback trail after falling short in his last two bouts, both of which came during last season’s “The Contender” boxing reality television series. The extremely popular Johnsen will now be fighting in his own backyard for the first time.

“It’s great to have my comeback fight right here! I have fought in other parts of New Jersey before, but it will be extra special and especially motivating to perform for my fans right here in Lyndhurst.”

Also featured will be unbeaten prospects Alex Perez (9-0, 6 KOs) and Patrick Majewski (8-0, 5 KOs). Alex “The Brick City Bullet” Perez, fighting out of Newark, is a former highly rated amateur star and has served as a sparring partner for Joel Julio as well as Miguel Cotto.
The Polish-born Majewski is a hard-hitting up-and-coming prospect out of Atlantic City.

Finally a PFC Welterweight champ to be crowned

LEMOORE, CA. — It took some time, but finally Bakersfield, CA’s Bryan Travers will get to fight for the Palace Fighting Championship World Welterweight title.

“My camp and I are not really surprised by anything in this sport anymore,” said Travers (10-1), who has gone through several different opponents and changes in date for his shot at PFC gold. “When I was fighting in Gladiator Challenge I never knew who I was going to fight ‘til the actual day of the fight. That’s what happened when I fought Anthony Ruiz. I’ve got use to it. At least this time I’ve got a month to prepare.”

And he will be preparing for a solid fighter, as Turlock, CA’s Jeremiah Metcalf (9-5) has earned the right to fight for the vacant crown on Friday at PFC 10’s “Explosive” at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino.

“It’s exciting to be able to fight for the belt in the PFC,” said Metcalf, who is coming off of a submission loss to Andre Galvao (1-0) in August. Metcalf made his PFC debut in March, beating Fresno, CA’s Jimmy Dexter (2-5).

“I’ve held some belts in other organizations and now it’s time for me to go after the PFC belt,” Metcalf added.

It should be a tough battle either way, as both are very accomplished fighters that have faced top-notch competition.

“I really can’t think of a much better fight for our welterweight belt right now,” said PFC President Christian Printup. “Travers has been very patient with us with all the fallouts and having to push this fight back several times. Right now I believe that Travers is motivated and he’s a stud.”

Travers hasn’t fought since March when he defeated Sacramento, CA’s Joel Crawford (0-5) by submission. That night he was supposed to fight UFC veteran Richie Hightower (7-2) for the strap, but Hightower never showed to weighins because of illness.

“All I really know about Travers is that he is a wrestler and has decent standup. I know that he is a tough guy and he was once a heavyweight, but has since dropped down in weight,” Metcalf said. “I think this is a good fight. I’m going to try and stand with him, but I’m sure he will want to take me down. I see it going the distance unless I catch him with a good shot.”

Travers is excited for the opportunity to fight Metcalf. The fight was originally scheduled to be against Porterville, CA’s Morris Aldaco (7-0), but according to Printup Aldaco has retired from MMA.

“I think that I’m getting a better opponent and a better fight. I know that a lot of people around the Valley held Aldaco in high regards, but really he has never beat anyone,” Travers said. “I much rather have this Metcalf fight. This is a lot harder, but a better fight. I don’t want to feel like a paper champion.”

There will be three title fights, as PFC World Lightweight champ Bakersfield, CA’s Brian Cobb (12-4) takes on Temecula, CA’s David Gardner (14-9) and Porterville, CA PFC World Bantamweight champ Shawn Klarcyk (9-2) will fight Tulare, CA’s Brandon Miller (3-2).

Albert & Duran battle to draw

Ballagou wins IBF Continental title in Big Apple

NEW YORK CITY (September 23, 2008) – Two-time Nigerian Olympian Eromosele “Bad Boy” Albert and Ghana-native Ossie Duran (23-6-1, 9 KOs) fought to a 12-round draw in their IBF Continental Africa light middleweight title bout last night (Tuesday, September 23), headlining an abbreviated “KnockOut Poverty” pro boxing card, presented by Bob Duffy’s Ring Promotions, at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan.

In the co-feature, former world title challenger “King” Jaffa Ballagou (46-6, 40 KOs), from Togo, won the vacant IBF Continental Africa cruiserweight championship by stopping Manu Ntoh (17-15-1, 10 KOs) in the 11th round.

“KnockOut Poverty” was a landmark event to help fight poverty in Africa. Grammy Award winning, UN Goodwill Ambassador Youssou N’Dour and friends were among the many stars appearing for the historic evening of entertainment, music and boxing. N’Dour and other African musical legends performed between fights with proceeds from the event going to the All For Africa charitable organization.

Albert (21-2-1, 10 KOs) and Duran (23-6-2, 9 KOs), former Commonwealth light middleweight and welterweight champion, fought toe-to-toe for 12 rounds, in which, the judges scored 117-111 for Albert, 116-112 for Duran, and 114-114. The IBF Continental Africa light middleweight title remains vacant.

“We are warriors,” Duran commented after the fight. “You don’t usually see that type of fight. But that was a robbery. I won the fight. He wasn’t scoring; I was all night with my jab.”

Before storming out of the ring Albert rhetorically asked, “How was that fight a draw?”

Ballagou (46-6, 40 KOs) got off the mat in the mat in the opening round to knockdown Ntoh (17-15-1, 10 KOs), from Cameroon, twice in the fourth and 11th rounds before referee Eddie Claudio halted the match at 2:47 of the 11th.

“I felt rusty at first – two years off will do that – but I knew that I’d get him,” Ballagou said after the fight. “I’m looking to fight the best light heavyweights in the world – Antonio Tarver, Roy Jones, Glen Johnson. I need them right now. I’m ready for them and I’ve waited so long.”

The scheduled 12-round IBF Intercontinental Africa light heavyweight title bout between former world title challenger Kingsley Ikeke (24-3, 13 KOs) and Sudan-native Abdullah Ramadan (15-8, 9 KOs) was cancelled because Ramadan was unable to gain entry (visa problems) into the United States from Canada. A four-round bout between pro-debuting light welterweight Issouf Kinda, of Bukini Faso, and Jose Guzman (3-3-1) was cancelled by the ring doctor because Guzman was running a high fever.

Among the dignitaries attending the show were former light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson and IBF bantamweight title-holder Joseph Agbeko.

CALZAGHE VS JONES PRESS TOUR ENDS WITH A ROUSING CARDIFF RALLY;

New York City (September 23, 2008)…After a four-city media tour that was as fast as both fighters’ ring styles, Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones Jr. will now begin a serious training regiment as they prepare for their November 8 “Battle of the Superpowers” at Madison Square Garden in New York City and live on HBO Pay-Per-View.

The Calzaghe vs Jones press tour spanned from one ocean to the other with the trip beginning in New York, traversing west across the country to Los Angeles, followed by a transcontinental overnight flight from LAX to London Heathrow that landed with the fighters going right to a London press conference where they meet a throng of UK media. The fighters spent the next day in London making media appearances and filming a commercial for UK-rights holder Setanta. The final stop a three hour drive to Cardiff, Wales—home of the champion Calzaghe—for a rousing rally at Cardiff City Hall that had fans lining up as early as 4:00am that morning. The public gave a warm reception to the legendary Jones and roared with delight when Calzaghe took the stage.

After a grueling schedule and many an interview, the press tour was proof that these fighters are ready to fight when their worlds collide on November 8. From New York to Cardiff, Calzaghe and Jones made it known to the world that they are ready to battle for the right to be at the top of the boxing world.

Two of the world’s hardest hitting super middleweights are set to put their respective unbeaten records on the line in a battle for the division’s most prestigious championship belt as Carl “The Cobra” Froch (23-0, 19 KO’s) squares off against Montreal, Quebec’s Jean Pascal (21-0, 14 KO’s), on December 6th, at the Trent FM Arena, in Froch’s hometown of Nottingham, England, to fill the vacant WBC title

The fight is presented by Hennessy Sports, in association with Groupe Yvon Michel, and will be shown live in England on ITV1.

“I’m very excited at the prospect of facing a top fighter like Pascal for the WBC belt. It’s something I’ve waited my entire career for,” said Froch, who endured a year of disappointment after potential big-name opponents decided to avoid the Cobra’s bite.

“Big credit for Pascal for taking the fight. I’ve had two so-called superstars flat out run from me this year in Joe Calzaghe, and Jermain Taylor. But Jean Pascal stepped up, and on December 6th, you’re going to have two undefeated fighters in their primes fighting for a world title.”

“It doesn’t get any better than that.”

But despite the frustration of having big fights disappear in front of his eyes, Froch is ready to turn the page on an aggravating chapter in his career, and begin writing a new one inspired by his own triumphs instead of others’ cowardice.

“It’s been very frustrating this past year having Inkin pull out twice, Calzaghe continue ducking me, and Taylor opting to fight Jeff Lacy in a potential eliminator rather than fighting me for the full WBC title.” Froch said

“There were times when it was really tough getting motivated to get in the gym. Really, what was I training for? But I kept faith in myself, and faith in my promoter, and things eventually worked out in a big way.”

For Pascal, the bout against Froch is not only his first crack at a world title, but also a chance to be the third Quebec fighter in eight years to hold the WBC title at 168 lbs., following in the footsteps of Dave Hilton Jr., and Eric Lucas.

“I’m very happy for the chance to fight for a world title, and to bring the WBC title back to its rightful home in Quebec.”

“It’s been a while since I last fought, so I’m very excited to be back in action. I’m more motivated than ever, and I’ll do whatever it takes to bring that title back from England.”

With two high-octane contenders vying for the WBC crown, Froch’s promoter Mick Hennessy knows his charge will have his hands full against the dangerous and determined Pascal, a gold medallist at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

“I’m so delighted that this fight has being made, and thankful that somebody had the cojones to step up and face Carl Froch,” Hennessy said.

“All of the top 168lbs fighters seem to be blatantly avoiding Carl Froch. So fair play to Jean Pascal and Yvon Michel for stepping up to take this fight.”

“I saw firsthand in Manchester just how good Jean Pascal is. He’s a very athletic, flashy, fast, powerful, and somewhat awkward fighter. And, you know against Carl he’s going to be more motivated than ever.”

Yvon Michel, Pascal’s promoter, believes that Pascal-Froch will mark a focal point in a historic revival of Quebec boxing.

“This is such a great time for boxing in Quebec. We have fighters defending their world titles, and legitimate contenders like Jean and Hermann Ngoudjo, on the verge of claiming world titles of their own,” Michel said.

“By the time this year is done, we’ll be looking at boxing history in the province of Quebec that will be the envy of the rest of the world.”

“I also want to thank Mick Hennessy for getting this fight made with us. We had very cordial, fruitful negotiations, and we at GYM are looking forward to a tremendous event on December 6, in Nottingham”.

According to Froch’s trainer Robert McCracken, his charge is more than ready to claim a spot on the world boxing stage as a legitimate world champion.

“Carl’s been put back a bit a couple of times this year with fights falling through, but he’s always ready for anybody, and any challenge.” Froch’s trainer Robert McCracken said.

“I think Carl Froch is the best 12 stone fighter on the planet, and he’ll prove that against Jean Pascal on December 6th.”

In the mainevent Thomas Troelenberg square off against Steve Klockow in a German titlefight at middleweight. On the undercard heavyweight Konstantin Airich returns after the loss to Danny Williams and face Czech Vaclav Cihlar.

Sauerland Event have moved Mikkel Kessler vs Danilo Haussler from Duesseldorf to Oldenburg (Oldenburg) but the date remains October 25. Former EBU bantam champ, now at superbantam, Simone Maludrottu fights Frenchman Jean Marie Codet September 27 in Guspini, Italy. Universum take it very easy with the marketing of the WBC eliminator between Vladimir Virchis and Juan Carlos Gomez set for September 27 in Hamburg. Virchis-Gomez is the probably the best matchup of what shapes up as an exellent night of boxing but the problems between Gomez´s current promoter Arena and Universum still lingers.

Robert Roselia and Affif Belgecham clash in the semifinal of the Grand Tornoi at the Cirque d´Hiver in Paris October 2. The winner in this fight will square off against Hassan N´Dam N´Jikam, who knocked out Woilid Guarras in the fifth Thursday night also in Paris.

Late news: Jr middle Ivan Gontsa from Moldova but with a Russian license tested positive for an illegal substance in the EBU titlefight against Zauerbek Baysangurov in July in Germany. Gontsa is suspended by the EBU:

Slovenian welter Jan Zaveck is mandatory challenger for EBU champ Rafael Jackiewicz but might fight an IBF eliminator against South African Isaac Hlatswayo.

EBU jr light champ Sergey Gulyakevich will fight a non-title ten-rounder October 7 in Minsk. Gulyakevich takes on Georgian Beka Sadjaia. There is still no date or site for the defence against Vitaly Tajbert were Spotlight Boxing won the pursebids.

EBU superbantam champ Rendall Munroe will defend the title against Italian Fabrizio Trotta November 22 in Nottingham.

Alex Kabore and Rafael Tirado Mendoza clash for the vacant WBA Pan-African superbantam title October 31 in Ouagadougo in Burkina Faso.

Ukrainian stars Vyacheslav Senchenko, Vladimir Kravets, Oleg Yefimovich and Stas Kashtanov are in Valence, France, for a two week training camp under Nicolas Riffard and José Berrido. Training will continue back home in Donetsk with title fights (EBU and EE-EU) lined up for a show November 29.

French amateur stars turning pro:
Jerome Thomas, silver at flyweight in the 2004 Olympics, will turn pro early 2009. Thomas have signed with EuroProm, headed by Gerard Teysseron. Jerome will close out his amateur career with the military world championships in November.
Featherweight Khedafi Djelkir, silver in the 2008 Olympic, is close to a deal with AMI Production headed by Míchel Acaries.
Redouane Asloum, brother of WBA lightfly champ Brahim, have signed with the company his brother runs, and will make his prodebut in November.
