Majewski (17-0, 11 KO’s) is similar to Wach as he is originally from Poland
but has settled in Atlantic City and is an exciting brawler in the
Middleweight division. Majewski has stepped up the competition with each bout. In his last bout he captured the NABO title with a ten round unanimous decision
over Marcus Upshaw.

Torres (22-5, 19 KO’s) is a tough Colombian who has fought top competition

PURDY READY TO SEAL LONSDALE BELT ‘DREAM’

Posted on | November 4, 2011 | No Comments

Belt could be his for keeps after the ‘Battle of Essex’

Lee ‘Lights Out’ Purdy says he is not looking past Colin Lynes to a rematch with Denton Vassell – as he wants to secure the Lonsdale belt for keeps on Wednesday night (November 9).

The Colchester man won the British Welterweight title in April, wrestling it from Craig Watson with a fifth round stoppage at the M.E.N Arena in Manchester. Purdy repeated the feat in a July rematch in Oldham in emphatic fashion, and victory live on Sky Sports against Hornchurch’s Lynes at Bethnal Green’s York Hall would mean the 24 year-old kept the famous Lonsdale Belt.

“It’s a dream to win the belt outright and to think that I’ve gone from a Southern Area title loss to winning the Lonsdale Belt is really just a testament to how much work Tony has done with me since I’ve joined with him,” said Purdy. “Since moving there I’ve been sparring with the likes of Lenny Daws, Darren Barker and John O’Donnell and I’ve been learning something every single day since coming into the gym. I’ve got lots more to learn though but I know I’m in the perfect place to do it. I’ll treat this fight like it’s the first fight with Craig Watson and that’s the way it will always be.”

Purdy knows that Lynes will provide a stern test, with the 33 year-old having 44 fights to Purdy’s 19 and over 170 more professional rounds under his belt than the champion. But with gym pal Darren Barker recently taking on pound-for-pound Middleweight king Sergio Martinez in Atlantic City, Purdy believes he’s in the best place to prepare for the Lynes examination.

“He’s been around the block a few times so I know what to expect,” said Purdy. “He likes to work behind the jab and try to outbox me so that’s what we’re working on. He’s had 40-odd fights so he knows his way around the ring but I think my youth and strength will see me through.

“It has been buzzing in here with Darren and the rest of the boys and we’re just one big family, no one fighter gets all the attention so whether it’s Darren’s World title fight or my British title fight, the whole gym just gets on with it and mucks in.”

The victories over Watson looked to have bought Purdy closer to something he has been wanting for a while – a rematch with Denton Vassell. Purdy faced Vassell for the vacant Commonwealth title in Wigan in April 2010, losing to the Manchester man on points. Vassell defends that title for the second time on Saturday night, and Purdy believes he is avoiding giving him a rematch.

“I was hoping to fight Denton again around now but he doesn’t want the fight – I believe his team don’t think that he can beat me now and they’ve swerved me and gone down a different route,” said Purdy. “He’s had a couple of fights since we met and he hasn’t done much in them, didn’t really impress at all and I’ve come off two great wins over Craig.

“I only really had two weeks to prepare for Vassell – don’t get me wrong, I was in good shape as I was getting ready for another fight but it’s still late notice to prepare to face someone at his level but if we meet again it will be for our titles and we’d have proper preparation time for it. Every fighter wants the chance to avenge their defeats and I’m no different.”

Tickets for the ‘Battle of Essex’ between Purdy and Lynes plus the full championship undercard led by Ashley Sexton’s English title defence against Luke Wilton are available from Matchroom Sport on 01277 359900 priced at £35 unreserved, £60 ringside and £100 VIP.

Mirror Man Faces British Champ Leon Williams in Brut Man Up Challenge

Posted on | November 4, 2011 | No Comments

TRAD TKO Boxing Gym

Leon ‘Solid’ Williams
British Cruiserweight Champion

As John Shaw approached his destination, a proper old school Boxing Gym deep in the heart of East London, he must have thought the gods were trying to send him a warning, as before he even reached the door of the famous TRAD TKO Boxing Gym a crash of thunder erupted as lightning flashed across the increasingly darkening sky.

The intrepid reporter, along with film crew, had made the short trip from Wapping to Canning Town to undertake a training session alongside new British Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams as part of the Daily Mirror featured  ‘Brut Man Up Challenge’.

Starting out gently John joined Leon in a warm up session, before gloving up for four rounds on the heavy bags. The plan was then to undertake some pads work with one of the UK’s top coaches Johnny Eames, however Johnny had other ideas and with a grin on his face ordered the pair into the centre ring for four rounds of…sparring.

After the sparring John was given an even greater insight into a pro boxers routine as he and Leon were put through a fighters conditioning session and finally three rounds of skipping to warm down.

When the session was over John said, “Today I’ve been training with the champ, Leon Williams, Leon ‘Solid’ Williams as he likes to be known and he put me through his paces. He was going about two miles per hour and I was pushed to my limit.

I’ve got an insight to what it takes to be a boxer and what I found hardest was the sparring, even though he wasn’t actually hitting me, just pacing the ring.

Three minutes seems like an hour in the ring, it’s hard work.”

The Champ then added,  “Yeah I got beaten up. He made it hard work and made my session even harder.

It’s good, it’s good seeing how he deals with what I have to deal with, even though it’s only one percent of what I normally have to do, but It was fun.”

To read John Shaw’s thoughts on the Brut Man Up Challenge, with British Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams, buy a copy of the Daily Mirror this Saturday, November 5th, or visit  www.mirror.co.uk to see video highlights.

The Ghost and The Hunter

Posted on | November 4, 2011 | No Comments

Curtis Ledger / MFC Staff

Jamie “The Ghost” Toney may be best known for his toughness. Let’s face it, the man has been stopped only twice in over 20 professional MMA fights. He’s had literally no amateur experience and very limited access to professional training as he started his fighting career. That being noted, fans may soon know him best for another reason. The Bas-Rutten-trained welterweight is also becoming a reality television star. That’s right, but don’t worry, he won’t be sliding around in mustard, solving gigantic crossword puzzles, or forming fake alliances with ditsy bikini models. It’s not that kind of reality TV. Instead, he’ll be hunting sharks in the depths of the ocean, stalking goats across hot lava rock terrain, and taking down wild boars.

Toney shot his new show, Project Dominion, recently, and the show will be airing on Wild TV and the Outdoor Channel starting December 26th. The show takes a group of travellers and drops them into various environments around Hawaii to hunt, fish, and travel. Viewers will see Toney along side Peter King, a former top-5 surfer in the world, and Dennis Deutsch, a private school principle who is an expert at anything to do with water and fishing. In talking about his show, Jamie Toney expresses the intensity of the experience, “It was unreal. They taught me how to surf, we hunted axis deer, we went cliff jumping and free diving, and we even caught sharks! If you can do it in Hawaii, we did it.”

Not everything went smoothly for the fighter and his crew during filming, however. Jamie almost lost a 3 round decision to the waves. “I almost drowned when we were out there,” explained Jamie, “There were 6’ swells that day. The water was rough…I was getting fatigued.” Despite the setback, the fighter jumped right back into action hunting wild boars.

Jamie made it to the MFC on a balanced record of victories by strikes and submissions, and he didn’t forget about wrestling practice while adventuring in Hawaii either. “I ended up wrestling a boar. I ran in behind it, grabbed its legs, wrestled it to the ground, and held it while the guide talked about it on camera.” The boar wasn’t in the mood for any lay and pray, however, it got up, turned around, and charged the guys. To find out what happens next, fans will have to check out the show.

His development stalking prey comes naturally to this veteran who started hunting from his early childhood. “My dad, he showed me how to hunt. It was something we bonded over. There’s a lot of things me and him don’t have in common, but hunting was something we could share together,” reminisces Toney, “My first gun that my dad bought me for Christmas was a 243.” These days, Jamie Toney has stepped up his firepower, “My favourite gun, which I own back in West Virginia, is a .300 Win Mag. When you shoot something with it, it goes down.”

Opponents better make no mistake. Toney explained he isn’t getting soft just because he’s out adventuring in Hawaii, “Patience and preparation are key in MMA and in hunting. Scouting a fighter is like hunting a bear. I need to know what a bear does, where it likes to roam, what it eats, and all its habits. Patience is essential in both. In hunting, if you make a wrong move, you scare off whatever you’re hunting. In fighting, making a wrong move can cost you the fight.”

As a fighter and a hunter, Jamie is a respectful man. His support for the sport runs deep in his blood, and he reached out to everyone in corporate North America during his interview with the MFC, “It’s really hard to work and be a full-time fighter. If there are companies out there open to it, they should get on board and sponsor some of these guys. If they can help out, help them out – especially these guys out there training hard. If I’d had sponsors early in my career, it would have been a totally different story on some of the outcomes of my fights.”

For a fan looking for a real dude to support in a fight, look no further than a respectful IBEW union electrician with his own adventure hunting show and a fighting style that makes him one of Bas Rutten’s favourite mixed martial artists. In talking about his upcoming fight at MFC 32, Toney sounds confident, “I go into every fight expecting to finish, and I don’t see this fight any other way. I’m going to finish this because that’s what I expect to do and what I train to do. It’s nothing against Cody. I’m not talking smack. That’s just the plan.”

On January 27th, fans can see how well Toney’s plan works during MFC 32 at the Mayfield Event Centre in Edmonton. You don’t hunt sharks or wrestle wild boars without some grit to back it up, so when Jamie steps up to face Cody Krahn, fans have to wonder who should be more concerned – his prey in the wild or his prey in the ring.
