Co-Feature To Lucian Bute-Glen Johnson
IBF Super Middleweight World Championship
This Saturday, Nov. 5, LIVE on SHOWTIME® at 9 p.m. ET
QUEBEC CITY, CANADA (Nov. 3, 2011) – Day two of press conferences at La Cage Aux Sports here attracted another strong media turnout as rising Canadian junior welterweight star Pier-Olivier Côté and the more-experienced Jorge Luis Teron discussed their 12-round co-featured bout on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING this Saturday, Nov. 5, from the Pepsi Coliseum live on SHOWTIME®(9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).
In the SHOWTIME main event, undefeated International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight champion Lucian Bute will make the ninth defense of his title against ageless former world light heavyweight champion Glen “The Road Warrior’’ Johnson.
The 27-year-old Côté (17-0, 11 KOs), of Quebec City, is coming off a unanimous decision over Pedro Navarrete this past July in Romania and has won four out of his last five contests by knockout. In May, Côté fought on the Manny Pacquiao–Shane Mosley undercard and scored a fourth-round TKO over Aris Ambriz. Born in Colombia and adopted by a Quebec couple at the age of two, Côté didn’t start boxing until he was 20 years old. As an amateur, he had 65 wins and was a Golden Gloves and Canadian champion. The hard-hitting prospect will face his toughest test to date in Teron, a former blue-chip prospect from New York City.
Teron (25-2-1, 17 KOs), of the Bronx, N.Y., is coming off a second-round stoppage over Jose Luis Soto Karass in March. The 26-year-old also owns a victory over former world title challenger Michael Lozada. The only blemishes on Teron’s record are a loss to current World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champ Brandon Rios in 2010 and a defeat via majority decision to veteran Aldo Valtierra in 2008. Teron avenged the loss with a unanimous decision over Valtierra five months later. Teron was also a solid amateur and was a three-time Golden Gloves champion
The event is promoted by Interbox, DiBella Entertainment and Warriors Boxing.
What the participants had to say on Thursday:
PIER-OLIVIER CÔTÉ:
“This is the most significant fight of my career and I’m ready for everything Teron brings.
“I know this is a major step up for me but I will not disappoint my fans. Thank you to InterBox and (promoter) Jean Bedard for making this fight possible for me. And a big thank you to SHOWTIME for broadcasting this fight. I will not let the network down.”
JORGE LUIS TERON:
“It’s going to be a great fight. I’ve been training for the past six months because of my fight that fell out with (Joel) Casamayor so I’m ready.
“It’s going to be an action-packed fight. I think one difference between Côté’s past opponents and me is that I’m coming in to win. You’ll see on Saturday night.”
Steve Albert will call the action with Al Bernstein and Antonio Tarver providing color commentary and Jim Gray serving as ringside reporter. David Dinkins Jr. is the executive producer of SHOWTIME Sports with Ray Smaltz producing and Bob Dunphy directing.

THOMPSON AND ARREOLA PLAN ON BRINGING THE HEAVYWEIGHT TITLES BACK TO THE U.S.
Posted on | November 3, 2011 | No Comments
BOXING: AMERICAN STYLE
Sherman Oaks (Nov., 4) “I was crying my eyes out with joy,” exclaimed Tony “The Tiger” Thompson upon hearing the official news from the International Boxing Federation (IBF) declaring him the mandatory challenger for Wladamir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s) after his opponent in the IBF Heavyweight Title Elimination bout, Eddie Chambers, was forced to withdraw from their bout on October 28th, and was unable to commit to a new date that was set for December 17.
“I believe it was a tough, but honorable and right decision by the IBF and it’s president, Daryl Peoples,” said Dan Goossen of Goossen Tutor Promotions. “It was an unfortunate circumstance with Eddie forfeiting his chance and derailing the final match of the four-man IBF sanctioned box off.”
Thompson’s mandatory IBF Heavyweight Championship bout is to take place within 90 days of Klitschko’s title defense on Dec. 10 against Jean-Marc Mormeck (36-4, 22 KO’s) of France, with the winner mandated to fight Thompson.
With the WBC’s #1 heavyweight contender Chris Arreola (33-2, 28 KO’s) drawing thousands of fans in his debut bout in Mexico this Saturday, November 5 at El Domo De La Feria in Leon, Mexico and broadcast on Televisa and ESPN Deportes, Goossen believes he has the top two American heavyweights immediately capable of taking the championship belts back to the United States from the Klitschko’s.
With the worldwide success of the Klitschko’s, and the reemergence of Thompson and Arreola, Goossen believes that his American fighters will become world champions in 2012 and bring the heavyweight division back to it’s past stature and drive pay-per-view numbers in the process. “There is no doubt in my mind, that the heavyweight championship of the world should be contested in the U.S. and back on pay-per-view now,” said Goossen.
“I was ecstatic! It’s been my dream fight since I lost,” said Thompson of the opportunity to get back in the ring with Wladamir, who he lost to in 2008 after 11 competitive rounds. “I fought my way back, and now that I’m here, I’m excited to show what I can do.”
“I learned a lot from the first fight and I’m ready to put those lessons to work. You have to learn something fighting the heavyweight champion of the world and I did.”
Stay tuned.

NEW YEAR’S EVE EDITION OF SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING,
DEC. 30 SPECIAL EDITION OF SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION
Tavoris Cloud Risks IBF Light Heavyweight Title Against Zsolt Erdei, and WBA Super Bantamweight Champion Rico Ramos Defends Against Guillermo Rigondeaux
On Saturday, Dec. 31, from Anaheim Convention Center
Plus the Return of Former Undisputed Middleweight Champion
Jermain Taylor On Friday, Dec. 30
NEW YORK (Nov. 3, 2011) – SHOWTIME Sports® will close out a tremendous 2011 with a live New Year’s Eve world championship doubleheader on Saturday, Dec. 31 (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast), featuring International Boxing Federation (IBF) light heavyweight world champion Tavoris Cloud defending his title against Zsolt Erdei and World Boxing Association (WBA) super bantamweight champion Rico Ramos facing WBA interim champion Guillermo Rigondeaux.
Just one day earlier on Friday, Dec. 30, former undisputed 160-pound world champion Jermain Taylor returns to the ring and the middleweight division when he faces 24-year-old Jesse “Beast” Nicklow of Baltimore, Md., in the main event of a special edition ofShoBox: The New Generation, live at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast of the New Year’s Eve event will feature four undefeated fighters with a combined record of 84-0 with 54 knockouts. Cloud (23-0, 19 KOs), of Tallahassee, Fla., will be making the fourth defense of the title he won via 12-round unanimous decision over former world champion Clinton Woods in August 2009. The hard-hitting, 29-year-old then successfully defended his title against Glen Johnson, Fulgencio Zuniga and Yusaf Mack.
The 37-year-old Erdei (33-0, 18 KOs), of Budapest, Hungary, is a former World Boxing Organization (WBO) light heavyweight champ. Erdei made 11 title defenses of the WBO crown before vacating his belt to campaign at cruiserweight in 2009. He won the World Boxing Council (WBC) cruiserweight title in his 200-pound debut with a victory over Giacobbe Fragomeni, but did not make any title defenses before returning to the 175-pound division.
Erdei, a popular fighter in both Germany and Hungary, is coming off a sixth-round knockout over former world champion Byron Mitchell this past June in Atlantic City. It was Erdei’s fourth fight in the United States.
A ShoBox alumnus, Ramos (20-0, 11 KOs), of Whittier, Calif., just outside of Los Angeles, won the WBA super bantamweight title with a seventh-round knockout over defending champ Akifumi Shimoda in his first world title fight this past July in Atlantic City. The slick and speedy 24-year-old holds victories over former world title challengers Alejandro Valdez and Heriberto Ruiz, but will be facing his toughest opponent to date in Rigondeaux.
The 31-year-old Rigondeaux (8-0, 6 KOs), of Miami, Fla., by way of Cuba, is one of the sport’s fastest rising prospects. An amateur boxing legend in Cuba, Rigondeaux was the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games Gold Medalist in the bantamweight division. The hard-hitting southpaw defected from Cuba in 2009 and won the interim WBA super bantamweight title in only his seventh professional fight. He is coming off a first-round knockout over previously undefeated Willie Casey in March in Ireland.
The doubleheader will originate from the Anaheim Convention Center Arena in Anaheim, Calif. and is promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions, Don King Productions and DiBella Entertainment.
A night earlier, Taylor (28-4-1, 17 KOs), of Little Rock, Ark., will enter the ring for the first time following a 26-month layoff. He became the undisputed middleweight world champion – winning the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO world titles — with a split-decision over Bernard Hopkins in 2005. Taylor dominated the division for the next three years before losing his belts in an upset to previously undefeated Kelly Pavlik in 2007.
Following another loss to Pavlik, Taylor moved up to super middleweight and defeated Jeff Lacy in a WBC title eliminator to earn a shot at champion Carl Froch. In just his second fight at 168 pounds, Taylor was on his way to a victory entering the 12th round but was knocked out with just 14 seconds left.
The 33-year-old Taylor entered the groundbreaking Super Six World Boxing Classic in 2009 and was knocked out in Group Stage 1 by former world champ Arthur Abraham. Following the loss, Taylor withdrew from the tournament and took a two-year hiatus from the sport.
Nicklow (22-2-3, 8 KOs) is unbeaten in his last four starts (3-0-1) and has won two in-a-row, including a unanimous decision over James Freeman in his last outing on May 21. A solid amateur before going pro in January ‘06, Nicklow won his initial nine fights. He was 19-0-1 before suffering his first loss. Nicklow’s other defeat came in his ShoBox debut against then-unbeaten Fernando Guerrero in December 2009.
The Dec. 30 event is promoted by DiBella Entertainment.

CARL FROCH TO SHOOT EXCLUSIVE FILM FOR GQ
Posted on | November 3, 2011 | No Comments
Filming for behind the scenes look at the Cobra starts Friday
Premier Men’s magazine GQ will film exclusive training footage with Carl Froch this Friday to feature online ahead of his Super Six final against Andre Ward in Atlantic City on December 17.
WBC Super-Middleweight champion Froch travels to the States to face the American Olympic hero in one of the biggest fights of the year, and the UK’s number one fighter has invited GQ to film him going through his paces in the gym. Froch will then sit down with the crew and record an in-depth interview on his stellar career to date, he blockbusting unification showdown with WBA champ Ward and what the future holds for the 34 year-old Nottingham star.
Filmed on a RED Epic camera for a striking effect, the GQ team’s footage will provide a unique insight into Froch’s high-intensity training regime and Froch will speak about the road to the Super Six final, a route which has seen his face some of the biggest names in the division back-to-back on his way to proving his status as the premier fighter in both the division and in Britain.
“We are delighted to be teaming up with GQ for this exciting new concept,” said Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn. “As Britain’s number one fighter Carl is inundated with media requests but this is a very different opportunity to penetrate a new audience in what I’m sure will be compelling viewing.”
