Tickets Are On Sale NOW at all Ticketmaster Locations

Dec. 3, 2011, at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., LIVE on SHOWTIME

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 17, 2011) – IBF and WBC Silver Bantamweight Champion Abner Mares and former two-time IBF Bantamweight World Champion Joseph King Kong Agbeko were the principals at a widely attended press conference Saturday to officially announce their highly anticipated rematch set for SaturdayDec. 3 at Honda Center in Anaheim,Calif., which will be televised LIVE on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING

In the co-featured bout, WBA Bantamweight Super Champion Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno will defend his title against former Two-Division World Champion Vic “The Raging Bull’’ Darchinyan.  The doubleheader is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, Don King Productions and Gary Shaw Productions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, DeWalt Tools and AT&T.  The doubleheader will be televised live on SHOWTIME® beginning at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Tickets for Mares vs. Agbeko II, priced at $150, $100, $50 and $25, are on sale now at all Ticketmaster locations, online atticketmaster.com and via charge-by-phone at 800-745-3000.  Tickets will be available for sale at the Honda Center Box Office beginning Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. PT.

Here’s what those involved had to say on Saturday:

Abner Mares:

I’m really happy and ready to fight on Dec. 3.  Right after the first fight I was asked if I had a problem with a rematch – I said ‘no.’

“I want to fight him again because he deserves it.  He’s a great champion.  If this is what the people want we’ll give it to them.

“I’m going to prove why I’m the champion come Dec. 3.  I’m going to go for a knockout.  Last time I prepared for 12 rounds, but this time I have something to prove.  I want to prove that I am the champion.  I want to knock him out. “

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions:

“We are looking forward to setting the record straight on Dec. 3 at Honda Center to erase any doubts that people may have.

“We thought the right thing to do was a rematch.  Everyone was crying for a rematch and Abner had no problem with it.  He’s young, he’s strong, he’s exciting – he’s exactly the kind of fighter fans like.

“Abner didn’t have to do the rematch.  Just because the IBF ordered it doesn’t mean he had to do it.  He took it because he wants to prove he’s the best in the division.

“I want to thank SHOWTIME for putting their muscle behind this great division.

“Both of these fighters on the co-feature have an impressive resume.  Darchinyan is one of the most recognizable names in boxing and Moreno hasn’t lot in 10 years.   The idea is the two winners on Dec. 3 will face each other in 2012.”

Frank Espinoza, Mares’ Manager:

“It’s time to clear the controversy.  This fight means everything to Abner.  On Dec. 3, he plans to show the world that he truly deserves to be called the top bantamweight in the world.”

Joseph Agbeko:

“I am not looking for the knockout on Dec. 3. I’m looking forward to a war.  There will be no more low blows this time because the world is watching. I will prove to the world that I deserved to win the last fight and I will be victorious on Dec. 3.

“Do I still have respect for Abner Mares?  Yes.  At the end of the day we are both warriors and we do our job.

“I didn’t want to retaliate with low blows.  After every round I came back to my corner and they told me to keep going after him and protect myself.  They just kept telling me to do what we trained to do and not to change.”

Alan Hopper, VP for Public Relations for Don King Productions:

“Don (King) sends his best from Florida and is looking forward to seeing you all from Honda Center on Dec. 3. He’s asked me to come and represent his company today. Abner Mares has a problem. He won the two biggest fights of his career with the use of low blows. The entire world and a new referee will be watching you closely on Dec. 3. So keep your punches up and fight fair.”

Chris DeBlasio, Senior Director, Communications, SHOWTIME Sports

“SHOWTIME is once again putting on a fight the fans truly want to see. For 25 years boxing has been the flagship sport of our network. We all remember the controversy that surrounded the first fight between Joseph Agbeko and Abner Mares in the SHOWTIME Bantamweight Tournament Final, but what we may have forgotten is that that fight was as exciting as boxing gets. It had all the drama, intensity and give-and-take action that defines the bantamweight division. We are proud to be part of this important rematch.”

Summers Abroad Keep Kulczycki Focused On the Mat and on World Issues

Posted on | October 17, 2011 | No Comments

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Two years ago, Brown junior wrestler Zack Kulczycki (Urbana, Ill.) spent the summer studying in St. Petersburg, Russia through the study abroad program offered by Brown University at the Nevsky Institute of Language and Culture, while also training at the Komplexnaya Shkola Vyshevo Sportinivnogo Masterstva, or in English, the Integrated School of High Mastery of Sports. There, some of the best wrestlers, judoists, samboists and boxers train. Kulczycki has now made it two summers in a row, learning and training abroad.

“I was fortunate to befriend two brothers, Chermen and Alan Tibilov, as well as several other wrestlers with whom I spent a great deal of time outside of training,” said Kulczycki.
Although Chermen could speak some English our conversations were primarily in Russian, forcing me to use what I had learned in real life situations. At the end of the summer of 2010, we had become so close that they invited to me to return in the summer of 2011 to South Ossetia in the Caucasus Mountains, to live with their family and train.”

The Caucasus region is analogous to Iowa, where wrestling is a central part of culture and life for those that live there. Historically, the best wrestlers from Russia come from the Caucasus republics such as Ossetia-Alania, Dagestan and Chechnya. This region produces so many wrestlers that they often move to other nearby countries such as Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Turkey to represent them in the World Games and Olympics. In addition, there are many other international athletes that travel to this small region to experience the best competition in the world.

“Unfortunately, when I arrived this past July we found out that I would not be able to go to South Ossetia,” said Kulczycki.

In the summer of 2008, while the rest of the world was watching the opening games of the Olympics in Shanghai, war broke out between Georgia and Russia in South Ossetia. In nine days nearly one thousand people died and nearly 158,000 were displaced. Following the war, South Ossetia was recognized by Russia as an independent country, however not by the United States, which still saw it as part of Georgia. Because of the difficult relations between the US and South Ossetia, Kulczycki would not be able to enter the newly independent nation and then return to Russia to fly home.

“Making the best of the situation we decided, upon the invitation of another friend, to go to a training camp two hours south of St. Petersburg, near the city of Luga,” stated Kulczycki. “The director of the camp warned me that the accommodations may not be as good as I was used to in America, however with wrestling being a sport in which all you really need is your body and mind, I was not too worried.”

Kulczycki spent the summer months in a small cabin without plumbing in the forest along with judoists, Greco-roman wrestlers, and samboists.  The trainees would run through the forest and swim before breakfast, wrestle or lift around noon before lunch, then run and swim again before dinner.

A month of training and the outdoors without any worries of school or work is something that any wrestler would enjoy even without modern conveniences of television or internet. On Sunday, the campers would rest and go to the “banya,” which is hotter than a normal sauna. The trainees were also beaten and whipped with bundles of dried birch and oak leaves.

“Although it doesn’t sound fun, it actually is. You leave feeling refreshed and relaxed,” stated Kulczycki.

“Overall my experience was much more than a month worth of wrestling. I got to live not as a visitor in a foreign country, but as everyday people do,” remarked Kulczycki. “My language skills improved greatly and so did my understanding and appreciation of the culture and life in Russia. I also made life-long friends that I will never forget. It was an invaluable experience that I would not trade for anything and I hope greatly that I can repeat.”

While the trip did serve as a learning experience in the culture and history of a foreign country, as well as a crash course in Russian, it provided a time for training and furthering skills on the mat and enhancing one student-athletes world view.

WORLD-RANKED EDWIN RODRIGUEZ, WILL ROSINSKY CLASH IN BATTLE OF UNBEATEN SUPER MIDDLES

Click Here To Listen To An Exclusive Fight News Unlimited Interview With Edwin Rodriguez

FRIDAY, OCT. 21, LIVE ON SHOWTIME®

Undefeated Junior Welter Gabriel Bracero Faces Daniel Sostre In Co-Feature

At MGM Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn.;

Telecast Begins At 11 p.m. ET/PT (Delayed on the West Coast)

NEW YORK (Oct. 17, 2011) – It’s not difficult to root for a guy like world-ranked super middleweight  Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez (19-0, 14 KOs), of Worchester, Mass., who faces fellow unbeaten Will “Power” Rosinsky (14-0, 8 KOs) of Ozone Park, N.Y., in the 10-round main event of ShoBox: The New Generation on Friday, Oct. 21, live on SHOWTIME® (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Rodriguez has been virtually unbeatable since lacing on the gloves at 16. He went 84-9 in the amateurs and was a two-time national champion. Since turning pro on Jan. 26, 2008, he has steadily ascended through the ranks and remains a strong possibility to one day become a 168-pound world champion.

What makes Rodriguez’ accomplishments inside the ring so extraordinary and inspiring, however, is that he’s managed to achieve success while dealing with a complex home situation with young children who have special needs. He and wife Stephanie’s fraternal twins, Edwin Jr. and Serena Lynn, were born prematurely, at 23 weeks. Chances of survival were bleak, yet both miraculously turned four years old on Sept. 29.

“They both weighed a pound and three ounces at birth,’’ Rodriguez said. “The doctor sat us down and told us many times that our son only had a slim chance of (making it). It was tough just like with any other family. Physically, I was there, trying to go to the gym, but mentally, I wasn’t. It was tough having my kids at the hospital for four months and at the same time trying to concentrate on boxing.

“I have a little more to deal with than most parents but we do what we have to do. I know boxing takes a lot of time away from my family but being able to give them a better life balances it out a little. My son got diagnosed with CP — cerebral palsy. But I’m just happy to have him and see him smile every day.’’

As if this wasn’t enough, Rodriguez’ manager, Larry Army, said the twins were also recently diagnosed with autism. Rodriguez credits his wife for helping him get through.

“My wife is such a very good mother,’’ he said. “Every time I have to go out for training camp, she makes sure everything’s taken care of. I appreciate her so much and she just makes everything easier.”

Rodriguez, who was planning to try out for the 2008 Olympic Games but couldn’t when the children were born, is currently ranked by the four major boxing organizations, topping out at No. 6 in the WBC (World Boxing Classic). The way he sees it, 2012 will be a magic number. By then, he figures, a top-heavy, talent-laden 168-pound division will have sorted itself out some, paving the way for him to make a move.

“I need two good fights against top-10 opponents and I’ll be ready for a world title fight,” said Rodriguez, who’ll be making his third ShoBoxappearance. Despite dislocating his shoulder in the second round, he won his toughest test to date with a unanimous 10-round decision over Aaron Pryor Jr. last Jan. 14. In his second ShoBox start, Rodriguez scored a ninth-round TKO over Buddy McGirt Jr. on Nov. 5, 2010. Rodriguez scored a sixth-round knockout over Kevin Engle in his ShoBox debut on April 30, 2010.

“I love boxing,” said Rodriguez, who’s gained invaluable experience by sparring with the likes of WBC champion Carl Froch and ex-titleholder Chad Dawson. “I love getting tested by getting the best sparring from the most elite fighters I can find and see where I’m at. I want to know how far I can go. Carl is a very nice guy. I got to be in with arguably the best super middleweight in the world.’’

As expectations rise, Rodriguez continues to express an extreme dedication to his craft and to the people who matter most in his life.

“I believe everyone in the world has something they fight for,’’ he said. “I fight for my family and wife and definitely for my kids because they’ve fought all their lives and now it’s my turn to fight for them.”

A brutal body puncher, Rodriguez is coming off of a devastating second-round TKO over Chris Traietti last Aug. 20 in a bout in which he broke two of Traietti’s ribs. Nine of Rodriguez’ last 11 fights have ended inside the distance.

Rosinksy, the first unbeaten fighter Rodriguez has faced, was the 2005 United States Amateur light heavyweight champion. Rodriguez was the U.S. Boxing national champion at 168 pounds the same year, and both he and Rosinksy traveled together to China and other locations representing the U.S.

A registered Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), the 5-foot-10 Rosinksy won his lone start this year with a 2:20, first-round TKO overJose Ramirez in a wild affair last July 20 in which both boxers went down. In his outing before last, he scored a lopsided eight-round decision over previously unbeaten Yasin Abdur-Rashid (7-0) on Nov. 20, 2010. Rosinsky will be making his ShoBox debut.

“I felt that accepting this fight was the perfect decision,” Rosinsky said. “I feel that I will really be able to showcase my skills as a professional fighter, and what better than to do it on SHOWTIME.’’

In the co-feature at Foxwood Resorts Casino in MashantucketConn., undefeated junior welterweight Gabriel “Tito” Bracero (17-0, 3 KOs) of Brooklyn, N.Y., takes on Daniel “The Hudson Valley Kid’’ Sostre (11-4-1, 4 KOs) of Highland, N.Y., in a 10-round clash of Puerto Ricans for the vacant North American Boxing Federation (NABF) title. It is the first of two consecutive Friday ShoBox telecasts, the second in three weeks, and the fourth in eight weeks.

Bracero, who won his ShoBox debut with an impressive eight-round decision over Danny O’Connor,  recorded knockouts in his last two starts in 2011, including a third-round stoppage over Dan Van Stadden in his most recent outing on July 3. An excellent technician, Bracero turned pro in March 2001 and competed regularly through March 2002 before stopping for 7 1/2 years. The 30-year-old has fought 12 times since resuming his career in March ‘09. Fourteen of his 15 pro starts have ended in decisions.

“I’ve been working more on setting down my punches,’’ said Bracero, who’s father was a prizefighter. “I got into trouble and my career got sidetracked, but I’m back now and looking to make up for lost time.’’

Sostre, a pro since April 2005, captured the New York state welterweight championship in January 2009 and had made three successful defenses.

The 27-year-old Sostre had a nine-fight winning streak snapped two fights ago when, in his first match in a little more than a year, he andDamian Frias fought to a split eight-round draw on April 8. In his last start, he lost for the first time in four years when he dropped a close eight-round decision to unbeaten Raymond Serrano on July 15.

Tickets, priced at $125, $85 and $50, are available at www.foxwoods.com or www.ticketmaster.com and by calling (800) 200-2882. Doors open at 7 p.m. ET. The first live undercard, non-televised fight is at 8.

‘Saint’ George Jupp Gets Prizefighter Shot On 29th Oct.

Posted on | October 17, 2011 | No Comments

Matchroom Sport’s hugely popular Prizefighter series returns to the Capital’s home of boxing, the famous York Hall in Bethnal Green, on Saturday 29th October. This time it’s the Featherweights that will get to compete for the coveted Prizefighter trophy and the £32,000 top prize.

Throughout it’s history Prizefighter has given novice pros the chance to establish themselves, on national TV, against some of the divisions biggest names.

Prizefighter – Featherweights is no exception and on the 29th October Belvedere’s exciting youngster ‘Saint’ George Jupp gets the chance to mix it up with such stalwarts as two time World Champ Choi Tseveenpurev and Irish Super Featherweight Champion Mickey Coveney, as well as unbeaten prospects Lee Glover and Troy James.

Whilst the aforementioned are the biggest names 20 year old George may have to face in this, the 22nd edition of the popular tournament, he is likely to also receive stiff competition from Liverpool’s Lee Jennings, who’s coming off a first round stoppage win over Chris Truman, and his TRAD TKO gym mate Ian Bailey should he draw either of them on the night.

George has just four bouts under his belt since he turned pro in May last year. The first, against fellow debutant Peter Barney, see the youngster secure a tidy points victory, as he did in his second outing, against Pavels Senkovs in September.

In December ‘Saint’ George again faced Senkovs, this time stopping the tough Mansfield based Latvian after one minute and fifty seconds of the fourth round. His final bout to date see him suffer a controversial narrow points loss to Harrow’s Raffi Khan back in March.

Following a training session, under the watchful eyes of his manager/co-trainer Johnny Eames at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, a beaming George said of the opportunity to participate in Prizefighter. “It’s a great, great competition, it’s a good chance to show everyone what you are made of.

I think the format suits me right down to the ground and I’m looking forward to it.

Whilst obviously I’m gonna be an underdog, as I’m a novice pro, but there’s no one there that bothers me. I’ll just take every fight as it comes and do what I do best, box.

I know I’m gonna be up against it but I’ll stick to my boxing and hopefully go all the way.”

Prizefighter – Featherweights takes place at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 29th October 2011 and will also be broadcast live on Skysports.

Tickets, priced £35 (standard seated) and £60 (ringside), for Prizefighter – Featherweights are available now, either on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA – for further information call 07960 850645.
