Vargas vs. Cheikho co-feature a potential war; McGuinness-Gaudet Oct. 22 in Ontario

Posted on | October 17, 2011 | No Comments

Hennessy Logo

TORONTO (Oct. 17, 2011) – The co-feature between unbeaten Columbian welterweight Samuel Vargas (7-0-1, 1 KO) and outspoken Ahmad Cheikho (6-3-2, 5 KOs), despite neither being natives of Canada, perhaps, best illustrates the provincial rivalry theme between Toronto and Quebec for the October 22 show, headlined by the NABA super featherweight title fight pitting Logan Cotton McGuinness and Benoit Gaudet at The Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.

The Oct. 22nd card is being presented by Hennessy Sports, in association with Interbox and United Promotions.

Vargas moved to Mississauga, Ontario from Colombia, while Cheikho came to Montreal from Lebanon. Both boxers take great pride in their homes and plan to push that point when they face each other in the 10-round co-main event.

“This fight means a lot in the sense Quebec has had some of the best fighters in Canada and now we can show everybody that Toronto has better fighters,” Vargas said. “I expect a great show.”

“It’s a very important fight for Ahmad because he’s representing Montreal and the province of Quebec,” Ahmad’s manager Camille Estephan noted.

Styles make fights and this one shapes up as a classic pitting a pressure fighter and underrated defender, Vargas, versus a fast, slick Cheikho, who was a junior kick-boxing champion.

“He’d better be chewing some gum to strengthen that glass jaw he’s got,” Vargas warned. “I’m in great shape, right on weight and good to go, so he better be ready. I hope he knows he’s in for a one helluva fight. He’s a better fighter than his record shows and he can box a bit. But, I can brawl or box.”

The two rivals have two common opponents: Vargas fought a 10-round draw in his last fight against Tebor Brosch, who Cheikho was stopped by in one round in 2009; Michael Springer lost a four-round decision to Vargas and fought a four-round draw with Cheikho.

“We read somewhere that Vargas mentioned that he wants to test Ahmad’s chin,” Estephan added. “Ahmad is coming to Toronto to hurt Vargas. This from Ahmad to Vargas: I want to crush your bones.'”

McGuinness (15-0-1, 7 KOs), presently rated No. 11 by the World Boxing Association (“WBA”), is the reigning North American Boxing Association (“NABA”) Lightweight Champion, but the Orangeville, Ontario native has given up his belt in order to fight Gaudet for the vacant NABA super featherweight title in the main event.

Former world title challenger Gaudet (24-2, 10 KOs), a former NABA super featherweight title-holder from Quebec, was stopped by defending champion Humberto Soto in their 2009 World Boxing Council (“WBC”) super featherweight championship match, which was the co-feature on the Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton mega-fight card.

Hennessy Sports’ newly signed unbeaten light heavyweight prospect, Lionell “Lonnie B” Thompson (9-0, 6 KOs), will be fighting an opponent to be determined in a six-round match.

Also on the undercard is an enticing matchup between a pair of Ontario lightweights, Jeremy Abbott(2-2, 1 KO) and Harrison McBain (3-3-1), who will square-off in expected 6 round battle.

In four-round bouts are Ontario fighters Dillon Carman (1-0), a heavyweight prospect, light middleweight Brandon “Bad Boy” Cook (2-0, 1 KO), and super featherweight Natasha Spence (2-0-1, 2 KOs). All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets, starting at $30.00, may be purchased at the Hersey Centre Box Office, through Ticketmaster at (855) 985-5000

Williams-Norton British Title Fight – “Leon Will Win” Says Former Champ Bruce Scott

Posted on | October 17, 2011 | No Comments

One of the UK’s most popular Cruiserweight Champions of the recent past, Bruce ‘Lionheart’ Scott, becomes the latest big name to pledge support for Steatham’s Leon ‘Solid’ Williams, ahead of his British Cruiserweight title battle against reigning Champ Rob Norton at the York Hall, in Bethnal Green, this coming Friday.

During his stellar career Bruce dominated the domestic scene, having secured, and defended, both the  British and Commonwealth Cruiserweight belts on many occasions, before moving onto he International scene, where he secured the WBU International title by beating France’s Rene Janvier by a unanimous points decision.

Bruce then moved onto the World scene and challenged for the World crown no less than three times. The first, against Johnny Nelson for the WBO version, then two months later against Juan Carlos Gomez for the WBC version.

His final challenge, against Enzo Maccarinelli for the vacant WBU version in 2003, ended controversially after referee Mickey Vann saved Maccarinelli from a certain first round knockout loss with an extraordinarily long count, which allowed the Welshman to come back to stop ‘Lionheart’ late in the fourth to secure the title.

After popping into the TRAD TKO Gym in Canning Town on Saturday, Bruce was quick to show his support as well as predict the verdict.

“I think Leon will win,” the big man said before explaining why,  “Rob Norton is a big awkward southpaw, so Leon has to try and get in there and knock him out because he’s a bit chinny sometimes

Leon’s gets in close and he’s a big puncher so this fight will suit him, I think Leon will win.

Good luck Leon, do your best.”

Leon ‘Solid’ Williams versus Rob Norton for the British Cruiserweight Championship headlines the Francis and George Warren’s Queensberry Promotions event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, and broadcast live on BoxNation (Sky Platform Ch. 456), on Friday the 21st October 2011.

Heading up the support card for this battle of the big boys will pitch Cromer, Norfolk’s Ryan Walsh against Melsham, Wiltshire’s Liam Richards for the vacant English Super Bantamweight title.

The stacked undercard also features the UK debut of unbeaten Irishman Dean ‘Irish Lightning’ Byrne, Penge’s unbeaten Welterweight Bradley Skeet, Croydon Light Welter Danny Davis and the debut of Peckham Welterweight John Garton, all against yet to be named opponents.

Tickets, priced £40 (standard seated) and £60 (ringside) for Williams vs. Norton are available now, either direct from Leon Williams – tickets are also be available at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA and on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com

Arturo Gatti movie writer Will Evans Ring 8 Oct. Guest Speaker Tuesday evening in NY

Posted on | October 17, 2011 | No Comments

NEW YORK, NY (October 16, 2011) – Screenwriter Will Evan will be the special guest speaker Tuesday evening (Oct. 18) for RING 8’s monthly meeting (7 PM/ET start) at the historic Waterfront Crabhouse in Long Island City.

Evans, a RING 8 member, has written the late Arturo Gatti’s story – “Can You Hear The Thunder” – which is a major motion picture.  Will was an amateur boxer in Pittsburgh who once defeated future world heavyweight champion Michael Moorer.  “We were very young and Michael only weighted 147-pounds then,” Evan noted. “I’ve loved boxing since I was a little boy.  Arturo Gatti is a story everybody wants to see.”

Evans plans to speak about the movie, Gatti’s legendary trilogy with “Irish” Micky Ward, and Arturo’s controversial death.  He will bring a 350-page book regarding new findings into Gatti’s death for RING 8 members to review.

“Every real boxing fan loved Arturo,” RING 8 president Bob Duffy said. “We’re very fortunate to have Will Evans as our speaker.  He’ll give his unique view into the Gatti legend.  Our members anxiously await details of the new investigation into his death, as well as an opportunity to hear and remember stories about one of boxing’s all-time great warriors.  It’ll be an open forum with membersArturo and Micky were past RING 8 award recipients.  It should be another great evening of boxing.”

Formed in 1954 by an ex-prizefighter, Jack Grebelsky, RING 8 became the eighth subsidiary of what was then known as the National Veteran Boxers Association — hence, RING “8” — and today the organization’s motto still remains: Boxers Helping Boxers.

RING 8 is fully committed to supporting the less fortunate people in the boxing community that may require assistance in terms of paying rent, medical expenses, or whatever justifiable need.

Go on line to www.Ring8ny.com for more information about RING 8, the largest group of its kind in the United States with more than 350 members. Annual membership dues is only $25.00 and each member is entitled to a buffet dinner at RING 8 monthly meetings, the third Tuesday of every month, excluding July and August.

Co-main events set for MFC 32; McKee vs. Cobb, Lewis vs. Gouveia top lineup for Bitter Rivals card

Posted on | October 17, 2011 | No Comments

The Maximum Fighting Championship launches what will be its biggest and boldest schedule in organization history with the announcement of its first event for 2012 – MFC 32: Bitter Rivals.

MFC 32: Bitter Rivals will take place on Friday, January 27 at the Mayfield Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, and emanating live on HDNet Fights. The main card’s live broadcast airing throughout North America on HDNet gets underway at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT (check local listings for channel designation).

Tickets for MFC 32 are on sale now and available exclusively via the MFC Ticket Hotline at (780) 504-2024.

The lineup for MFC 32: Bitter Rivals is already taking shape with three main-card bouts announced by MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich.

In the co-main event, MFC lightweight champion Antonio “Mandingo” McKee puts his title on the line against No. 1-ranked challenger Brian “The Bandit” Cobb. The other co-main event will pit long-time MFC fan favorite Dwayne “D-Bomb” Lewis against Brazilian striker Wilson Gouveia in a light-heavyweight battle that will be the MFC’s first five-round, non-title superfight.

“The fans of the Maximum Fighting Championship want action, they want exciting fights, and they want to be impressed by the fighters – just like I do,” said Pavelich. “These co-main event fights are set up to provide all of that.

“When he’s pressed into a corner, Antonio McKee comes out fighting, and there’s no way in the world that Brian Cobb will let McKee just coast through this fight. Cobb wants the belt and he is going to go after it. It’s going to be up to McKee to decide if he’s willing to fight to keep it.

“And the MFC has no fighter who’s more combative, more eager to settle into the pocket and throw down than Dwayne Lewis. Both he and Wilson Gouveia are looking to get on track after long layoffs so there’s no better way to figure out who’s for real than to let them smash their way back into the mix.”

McKee (26-4-2) has won 12 of his last 13 fights, and will be defending his MFC crown for the second time. The Lakewood, California, product claimed the MFC lightweight title at MFC 20 with a unanimous decision over Derrick Noble, and then defended the belt in one of the most impressive efforts of his decorated career. McKee, angered by many of his opponent’s pre-fight comments, notched the third TKO of his career finishing Luiz Azevedo only 3:11 into their bout at MFC 26.

Cobb (19-6) is on quite a roll of his own as he gets his first MFC title shot. The Bakersfield, California, native has won four straight including an exhilarating triumph in his organizational debut at MFC 30. Cobb turned the tables on opponent Drew Fickett and racked up a scorching TKO victory just 4:44 into the first round. A holder of 12 submission victories, Cobb has also registered key career wins over Kazunori Yokota and Diego Saraiva.

The MFC 32 superfight features the return of Lewis (12-7), the pride of Fort McMurray, Alberta, who is unquestionably one of the MFC’s all-time great crowd-pleasers with 13 appearances under the organization’s banner. Lewis rode a seven-fight winning streak into his title fight at MFC 28, but he fell short via a third-round TKO against Ryan Jimmo. Lewis boasts seven career knockouts including sensational first-round finishes against Mike Nickels and Marvin Eastman.

Gouveia (12-8), a holder of seven submission and four knockout wins under his belt, makes his long-awaited return from injury following his loss to Jimmo at MFC 25. The Brazilian, who now fights out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has a number of big-name victories on his resume including first-round stoppages of Jason MacDonald, Jon Fitch, and Carmelo Marrero.

Also signed to the MFC 32: Bitter Rivals card is a showdown between fighters who are both coming off stellar performances at MFC 31. In an explosive lightweight affair, hometown rising star “The African Assassin” Mukai Maromo (6-2) will meet former U.S. Marine Adam Lynn (17-8).

Maromo, who has won three straight, scored the Knockout of the Night at MFC 30 with a quick finish against Scott Cleve, and then put on a fantastic performance for his Edmonton fan base in a thrilling three-round decision over Sabah Fadai.

Lynn enters MFC 32 boasting a six-fight winning streak highlighted by his Knockout of the Night outing at MFC 31 when he floored Curtis Demarce just 1:38 into Round 1. The San Clemente, California, product holds six knockouts on his career resume.

The remainder of the main card along with the undercard will be announced in the near future.

1996 U.S. Olympic Team Captain Lawrence Clay-Bey heading into Conn. Boxing Hall of Fame

Posted on | October 17, 2011 | No Comments

7th annual Gala Induction Dinner Oct. 29 at Mohegan Sun

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (October 16, 2011) – The captain of the 1996 U.S. Boxing Team, Lawrence Clay-Bey, will be inducted into the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame (CBHOF) with six others at the seventh annual CBHOF gala induction dinner Saturday, October 29 in the Uncas Ballroom at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville.

The other 2011 inductees include five-time world champion Vinny “The Pazmanian Devil” Paz, judge Glenn Feldman, world light heavyweight title challenger Eric “Magic Man” Harding, ringside physician Dr. Michael Schwartz and, posthumously, standout amateur boxer Kelvin Anderson and boxing coach Billy Taylor.

Also being honored are 2011 winners for professional and amateur Fighters of the Year, Delvin Rodriguez and Tremaine WilliamsDon Trella will receive the Official of the Year award, andPeter Timothy will be the recipient of the Achievement Awrd.

“I’m pretty excited,” Lawrence talked about going in the CBHOF. “I think it’s cool, not to mention going in with Kalvin Anderson, who was the top fighter at the gym I started boxing at. Eric Harding and I shed some blood doing some sparring and Dr. Schwartz worked some of my fights.”

Clay-Bey, who was born in Hartford and lives in Bloomfield, didn’t start boxing until he was in his twenties, but he was a super heavyweight champion of the National Golden Gloves Tournament, captured a bronze medal at the 1995 World Amateur Boxing Championships, and knocked out “Baby” Joe Mesi to qualify for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Lawrence was selected as captain of the U.S. Olympic Team that included future world champions in the pro ranks — Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Antonio Tarver, Fernando Vargas and David Reid. Clay-Bey was the subject of controversy when he lost a 10-8 decision in the second round to the eventual gold medalist and current world heavyweight champion, Wladimir Klitschko. Clay-Bey stunned Klitschko for a standing 8-count, but, instead of being awarded two points, the officials awarded two points to Klitschko.

“My coaches protested but I didn’t have a problem with it,” the unassuming Clay-Bey said. I never look back and wonder, what if. Who knows, I could have lost in the next round. I was disappointed, of course, but I was a little older than the others and the deeper issue was competing in the Olympics, in which, three people lost their lives in the Centennial Park bombing.”

Clay-Bey had a 60-9 record as an amateur and won 21 pro fights, including 16 by knockout, with only three losses and one draw. Today, he is a transportation officer for the Connecticut Department of Corrections. “I’m just a boxing fan even though I’m asked all of the time if I want to be a trainer,” the 40-year-old Clay-Bey concluded. “If I were to get into tip-top shape today, I could compete with some of these guys, but I don’t want to.

“I’ve always been the reluctant type. I got into boxing to lose weight. With all of my boxing accomplishments, I still don’t like to be the center of attention. I was told by officials that I had to keep my acceptance speech down to five minutes. I laughed and said, nobody has to worry about me going over. I just don’t like the spotlight.”

Like it or not, at least for only one night, Lawrence Clay-Bey will be in the spotlight at the 2011 CBHOF induction dinner.

Tickets are still available for the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame dinner for $75.00 by calling Kim Baker at Mohegan Sun (860-862-7377). Doors open at 5:30 p.m. followed by cocktails, dinner and the awards ceremony.
