Promising Middleweight Risks Unblemished Record

Against “The Ghanaian Gladiator” Ossie Duran

In Main Event Friday, Oct. 28, LIVE on SHOWTIME®

line

Tripleheader Begins at 11 p.m. ET/PT (Delayed on the West Coast)

From Bally’s Grand Ballroom, Atlantic City, New Jersey

NEW YORK (Oct. 12, 2011) – Andre Ward is impressed with the ability, attitude, focus and potential of Brandon “Flawless” Gonzales, an unbeaten middleweight and a sparring partner of Ward’s who makes his debut on ShoBox: The New Generation against Ossie Duran in the main event of a tripleheader Friday, Oct.28, live on SHOWTIME® (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) at Bally’s inAtlantic City, N.J.

“I’ve known him since his amateur days and think he has what it takes to be a champion,” said Ward, the undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight champion and finalist in the Super Six World Boxing Classic on SHOWTIME. “He’s definitely got skills and a lot of raw talent. He’s strong, tough, has speed and a great work ethic, and anytime you have that kind of combination, where a fighter wants to be good and has a family he wants to provide for, that makes him dangerous.

“I like that even when Brandon is not fighting and helping me – and we’ve sparred for years – he’s on time and comes in good shape. Having the work ethic is sometimes more important than skill. I believe he respects the sport and I definitely like that about him.

“There’s a lot of work ahead for him, but if he continues to hone all his skills, work hard, stay focused and lets his career take course, I believe he’s championship material and can be a champion someday.”

Gonzales, a 27-year-old of Mexican and African-American descent, was born in Portland, Ore., and lives in Sacramento, Calif., which is approximately a two-hour drive from Oakland where Ward works out. Gonzales will enter the eight-round middleweight bout with a record of 14-0-1 with 10 knockouts. Duran, of Paterson, N.J., is 26-8-2 with 10 knockouts. The “The Ghanaian Gladiator” has won three in a row.

In compelling co-features, unbeaten 2008 U.S. Olympian Javier “El Intocable” Molina (8-0) of Norwalk, Calif., meets hard-hitting Artemio “King” Reyes Jr. (13-1, 11 KOs) of San Bernardino, Calif., in an eight-round battle of promising Southern California welterweights, and American heavyweights with identical win-loss records, No. 1 contender “Fast” Eddie Chambers (36-2, 18 KOs), of Philadelphia, and southpaw and No. 2-rated Tony “The Tiger” Thompson (36-2, 24 KOs), of Washington, D.C., collide in what will be a meaningful and competitive 12-round International Boxing Federation (IBF) world championship elimination fight.

Gonzales will be making his first start since signing with Goossen Tutor Promotions and Antonio Leonard Productions and hooking up with Virgil Hunter, Ward’s trainer, earlier this year.

A late bloomer who didn’t start to box until he was 19, Gonzales was one of the top amateurs in the country at light heavyweight and won a Golden Gloves championship in 2004. He was a finalist in the 2007 U.S. National Championships but rather than try for a berth in the 2008 Olympic Games, Gonzales, who’d just started a family of his own, opted to turn pro in February 2007.

“I have some catching up to do,” said Gonzales, a talented, athletic, aggressive power-puncher with both hands who is both technically sound and crowd-pleasing. “I feel I have the talent of a champion but I’m the age of a contender and have the record of a prospect. This (fighting on ShoBox) is definitely a great opportunity and I’m going to take full advantage. I’m looking forward to getting into contention, cracking the top 15 and fighting some of those guys. At the same time, I am taking it one fight at a time.”

A winner of nine consecutive fights since a September 2008 bout against Danny Jevic ended in a first-round no-contest when Jevic could not continue after an unintentional headbutt, Gonzales won his lone start in 2011 with a unanimous eight-round decision over Lester Gonzalez on Jan. 7.

Duran, 34, won his last start on a 10th-round TKO over Latif Mundy on June 22. The globe-trotting Ghanaian has campaigned in 10 countries and fought 10 or more rounds on 13 occasions.

Although he’s never been stopped and is seldom outclassed, the confident, durable Duran has often been paired against younger, up-and-comers such as David Lopez,Fernando GuerreroJamie Moore and James Kirkland, who he dropped a tough 10-round decision to on ShoBox June 1, 2007. Duran has only rarely received the benefit of the doubt in the majority of his tight fights, particularly the losses.

“I go in and I do what I’m supposed to do but they don’t give me the win when I earn it,” he said. “It makes me feel good though because I fought everyone in their backyard.”

Molina, 21, will be making his fifth start in 2011 and first in a match slated for eight rounds. Seemingly recovered from a hand injury that sidelined him between November 2009 and October 2010, the impressive youngster is coming off a unanimous six-round decision over John Revish last Sept. 15.

The personable, soft-spoken Molina went 153-13 during an extensive, outstanding amateur career. At age 18, he was the youngest member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team that competed in Beijing. He turned pro with a second-round knockout overJamie Cabrera on March 27, 2009.

Molina comes from a fighting family that includes his father, uncle, and older brother, all who have fought professionally, as well as his twin brother Oscar, who was a member of the Mexican Olympic team.

Reyes has won 12 in a row, 10 by knockout. In his last start and fourth of the year, the popular 25-year-old captured the World Boxing Council (WBC) Latin American title with a convincing second-round knockout over Miguel Munguia. This will be Reyes’ShoBox debut and first outing outside California.

Winning a belt was important to Reyes and his family. “(Afterward, I had) time to reflect on what I’d accomplished and it was very surreal,” he said. “I (won) a belt for my dad, which was his dream. As soon as I came home, I went to his bed and told him, “I did it. Pops, I did it, we got a belt. It was a very special moment for me and my family.”

Reyes’ father has been in a coma since a tragic car accident in 2008 left him in a vegetative state. “Fighting 4 Pops” is Junior’s life statement, and those words are written into his trunks.

If triumphant, Chambers remains the IBF mandatory challenger to heavyweight kingpin, Wladimir Klitschko, who’s also the World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion. With a victory, Thompson leapfrogs over Chambers into the top spot.

Chambers, a 6-foot-1, 29-year-old, and the 6-foot-5 Thompson, who turns 40 on Oct. 18, are longtime friends and sparring partners. The winner moves closer to a rematch against Klitschko.

“You’ve got to fight your friends sometimes in this business,” said Chambers, a fast-handed, slick, crisp puncher with the ability to pick his shots with variety. I’m looking forward to this and getting it done.”

In his only start since losing to Klitschko in Germany in March 2010, Chambers scored a unanimous 10-round decision over Derric Rossy last Feb. 11 at Bally’s in Atlantic City. Chambers also holds a pair of high-quality wins over Alexander Dimitrenko and Sam Peter in 2009.

Thompson has won five straight by knockout since giving Klitschko one of his toughest fights in July 2008 in Germany. In his most recent outing, Thompson scored knockdowns in the second and third rounds en route to a third-round TKO over Maurice Harris last May 27. Overall, Thompson has gone 32-1 dating to August 2000.

Regarding fighting a friend, Thompson said, “It’s tough, but there is an opportunity for both of us to realize a dream. I just have to go in there and take care of business,” he said.

Tickets, priced at $75 and $50, can be purchased at  www.ticketmaster.com, Ticketmaster retail outlets, Ticketmaster Call Center 800-745-3000 or Bally’s Atlantic City (day of the event). The first undercard, non-televised fight will begin at 9 p.m. ET.

Curt Menefee will call the ShoBox action from ringside with Steve Farhoodand Antonio Tarver serving as expert analysts. Gordon Hall is the executive producer of ShoBox with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillipsdirecting.

Nobles of Philadelphia has a record of 26-1 with twenty-one knockouts and will be making his first start in four years, which was a first round stoppage over Andy Sample.

Nobles holds a stoppage win over former WBA Heavyweight champion Bruce Seldon and his only defeat was a controversial disqualification defeat to future WBA champion Nikolai Valuev in a bout that Nobles was ejected for low blows that appeared to be caused by Valuev’s trunks being elevated.

In the main event, popular Tony Ferrante will take on tough Tommy Karpency in a grudge match for the Pennsylvania State Light heavyweight title.

Ferrante, 27 years old, has a record of 12-2 with seven knockouts, won his first nine bouts which included wins over Anthony Pietrantonio (6-1) and he won the WBF United States title with a eight round majority decision over Billy Bailey.

Ferrante stopped grizzled veteran Andre Hemphill in seven rounds on July 15th.

Previously he took out Joe Park as part of ROUND 3 at Harrah’s in Chester in the fourth round on June 3rd.

He defended it once against undefeated and highly regarded Chuck Mussachio (13-0-2).

Karpency then traveled to Germany and dropped a competitive decision to highly ranked and undefeated Karo Murat (21-0) —Murat is currently ranked #2 by the IBF; #11 by the WBO and #13 by the WBA.

Boxing’s New Odd Couple; Edwin Rodriguez & Danny O’Connor

Posted on | October 12, 2011 | No Comments

RODRIGUEZ-ROSINSKY HEADLINE LIVE ON SHOWTIME® OCT. 21 FROM MGM GRAND AT FOXWOODS

Mashantucket, CT/New York, NY – (Oct. 12, 2011) – Boxing’s new odd couple is a Massachusetts pair training together thousands of miles away from home in Houston, undefeated super middleweight Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez and light welterweight prospect Danny O’Connor, who will be fighting on October 21 in separate bouts at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods.

Rodriguez (19-0, 14 KOs) headlines “Octoberfist: Fight Night Done Right,” presented by DiBella Entertainment, against another undefeated fighter and friend, New York City brawler Will “Power” Rosinky (14-0, 8 KOs), on ShoBox: The New Generation LIVE on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast). Also being broadcast live on SHOWTIME® is a junior welterweight co-feature, matching rising contender Gabriel “Tito” Bracero (17-0, 3KOs) and always tough Daniel Sostre (11-4-1, 4KOs) for the vacant NABF title.  Both bouts are scheduled for 10 rounds.

The 26-year-old Rodriguez (19-0, 14 KOs), a native of the Dominican Republic fighting out of Worcester (MA), is already considered a legitimate world title contender, presently rated among the top 12 in all four major governing bodies (IBF #5, WBC #6, WBA #8 and WBO # 12). “La Bomba” and O’Connor (15-1, 4 KOs), the popular Irish-American boxer from Framingham (MA), met in 2005 as New England teammates. A friendship soon blossomed and O’Connor soon started training at Rodriguez’ gym, the Worcester Boys & Girls Club.

They eventually went their separate ways. Rodriguez turned pro and O’Connor went to China as a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team as an alternate. Now, they’re back together in Houston, sharing an apartment and being trained by the highly-regarded Ronnie Shields.

“We’re on a mission to accomplish something special together,” Rodriguez explained, “and become world champions from Massachusetts. We both left our family back home (Edwin has a wife and five-year-old twins) to train here with Ronnie Shields. In many ways having Danny here makes it a little better because we know what each other is going through.”

Rodriguez and Rosinsky also have a history together, dating back to the amateur ranks, where they were members of the 2006 USA Boxing Team that traveled to China. They were also 2005 USA National Champions; Rodriguez at middleweight and Rosinsky at light heavyweight.

“He (Rosinky) is a tough but nice kid,” Edwin noted. “He’s a real fighter, too. I know him and he knows me, but I’m not the same fighter he knew. It’s great being trained by Ronnie Shields, and I’m not the same fighter.”

O’Connor (15-1, 4 KOs) readily admits that he and his Houston roommate, Edwin, are complete opposites. “We are like the odd couple: I’m always on time, he’s not; I don’t like playing video games, he does. I love Edwin because he’s such a genuine person and a great guy. Being here with him makes it bearable. I have a seven-month old son, Liam, who I’ve barely seen because I’ve been here the last three months. I really miss him and my wife. It’s tough, but it’s also funny. I’m very relaxed before my fight but, watching Edwin fight, I’m a nervous wreck.”

O’Connor’s first loss as a pro came earlier this year, ironically, on ShoBox to Bracero. He followed Rodriguez to Houston and rebounded nicely last month with a first-round knockout victory.

“I always try to do better than Edwin,” said O’Connor who will be in a six-round, off-TV bout vs. TBA on Oct. 21. “We push each other all the time in training. If I get a little uptight, Edwin will be the first to tell me and, when I get cranky making weight, he’ll tell me I’m being a bitch. We’re totally opposite, except in the boxing world.”

Shields, a former two-time world title challenger and “Trainer of the Year,” has embraced his New England fighters and made them part of his family. “Edwin has been with me about four months now,” Shields commented. “This is a kid who wants to learn in order to be the best. He will be world champion. He’s done everything I’ve asked. He’s had a great training camp and this is his time to shine. His opponent (Rosinsky) is good, maybe a little heavier – a light heavyweight — than Edwin, but they’re fighting at a catch weight of 172 pounds. He comes forward and Edwin won’t go toe-to-toe with him. This guy is coming forward to knock out Edwin, who needs to show his boxing skills in this fight.

“We’re working with Danny to sit down on his punches. He’s a good boxer but he didn’t know how to fight on the inside. He’s learning how to turn into his punch and I think it surprised him to know he has more power than he thought. He can box but fighting inside can’t be foreign to him.

“I love these two guys. They’re two of the best I’ve ever met in this business. Edwin’s a blessing. How can you not love Edwin? Danny’s a great guy, too. They fuel each other in the gym and are good for each other being so far away from home. They share an apartment and do everything together – train, eat, movies, run, etc. It’s like a family affair with them and the other fighters at my gym. They come over to my house for dinner once in a while. Hey, they’re family now.”

Two other talented New England boxers will be in action on Oct. 21. Exciting Quincy (MA) junior lightweight Ryan “Polish Prince” Kielczewski (11-0, 2 KOs) is always a crowd pleaser, while New Haven super bantamweight Luis “KO King” Rosa (8-0, 5 KOs) is a sound, overall prospect.

The complete undercard will be announced shortly.

Tyson ready to unleash Fury on Pajkic

Nov. 12 in Manchester

LONDON (October 12, 2011) – A bitter, ongoing feud for the past year promises to finally erupt November 12 when a pair of 16-0 heavyweights, massive Tyson Fury and menacing Neven “No Surrender” Pajkic, put their perfect records on the line, as well as their immense pride, in a 12-round take-no-prisoners title fight at EventCity, Trafford Park (next to Trafford Centre) in Manchester, England. It will mark Fury’s first pro fight in his birthplace of Manchester.

“EventCity is thrilled to be the host venue for a world-class boxing event, and looks forward to welcoming spectators to a fantastic evening of sport and entertainment,” noted Andy Orr, Centre Director, EventCity.

Fury vs. Pajkic, proudly presented by Hennessy Sports, will be broadcast live on Channel 5, the United Kingdom’s terrestrial network.

Neven will be challenging Fury for his prestigious Commonwealth title as the British champion, Tyson, takes on the Canadian title holder, Pajkic.

Fury (16-0, 11 KOs), who called out the Bosnian from ringside at a Pajkic fight last year, has been the subject of some derogatory remarks made by Pajkic (16-0, 5 KOs) on numerous occasions.   There’s no love lost between these rivals. Along with bragging rights being on the line in the United Kingdom/Ireland and Canada, the “O” must go for one of these two warriors,

“Once again, Tyson will be fighting a dangerous, undefeated fighter,” noted Mick Hennessy, who is promoter of the Nov. 12th event as well as Fury’s. “In his last six fights, including the upcoming one against Pajkic, Tyson will have fought four undefeated fighters (14-0 Dereck Chisora, 13-0 Marcelo Luiz Nascimento and 12-0 Rich Power), which is unheard of for a top heavyweight coming up the ranks. Tyson is old-school and he’s doing everything the proper way. I honestly believe that, within 18 months to two years, not only will he be the No. 1 heavyweight in the world, but the biggest name in the sport as well.

“Fury vs. Pajkic is another great fight for Channel 5, it is an absolutely explosive grudge match that shouldn’t be missed.”

The 23-year-old Fury is one of the top heavyweight contenders in the world, presently rated No. 13 by the World Boxing Council (“WBC”) and No. 15 by the World Boxing Association (“WBA”). He captured the British & Commonwealth titles in July by way of an impressive 12-round decision against previously undefeated Chisora in London.

In his last action, Fury stopped Nicolai Firtha (20-8-1) in the fifth round of their September 17 thriller at the famed Kings Hall in Belfast.

A native of war-torn Bosnia, Pajkic defected to Canada in 1996 and he went on to capture top honors at the 2004 Ringside Tournament, which was the highlight of his amateur boxing career. Now living in Toronto, Neven is the reigning Canadian heavyweight champion whose most notable victims have been Nicolai FirthaJohnnie WhiteRaphael ButlerJason Gavern and Grzegprz Koelsa(twice).

“I’ve never seen Neven show this much anger towards any other fighter,” Pajkic’s promoter Rick Smiciklas noted. “It all started when Tyson called out Neven, who then flicked his towel at Tyson, and it’s grown from there. Neven can’t stand Tyson. Calling it a bitter rivalry is weak. Now, they can settle their bad blood in the ring. It’s going to be a fun night. They each have a lot of energy. Both are charismatic and speak very well. This is a fight that’s going to be good for boxing and both guys.”

Also scheduled to fight on the Nov. 12 card in Manchester is the very talented exciting, undefeated super bantamweight prospect Kid Galahad (10-0, 4 KOs), of Sheffield)

The full card will soon be announced. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets, starting at £30, will be on sale from midday today (Wednesday 12th) and may be purchased via Hennessy Sports Box Office 01925 755 222, Ticketline.co.uk 0844 888 4402, Ticketmaster.co.uk0844 847 2500 and online at www.HennessySports.com.

Doors open at 5 PM with the first bout scheduled to start at 5.30 PM.

The Nov. 12 telecast will also be available in Canada to all Super Channel network subscribers.
