TRAD TKO Boxing Gym

London – Wednesday, 31st August 2011

Sky Sports To Air Highlights From TRAD TKO Boxers Charity Football Tourney This Thursday.

The second annual TRAD TKO Boxing Gym Boxers and Celebrity Charity Football Tournament, in aid of the Indee Rose Trust, which took place at Concord Rangers FC in Canvey Island on Sunday 14th August, proved to be a massive success, having raised in excess of £18,000 on the day, with a further £3,000 being pledged on-line for the worthy cause that supports children that have been diagnosed with brain or spinal tumors.

More than a hundred star boxers, including WBO World Light Heavyweight Champion Nathan Cleverly, WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight Champion Kevin Mitchell, WBA International Super Bantamweight Champion Rendall Munroe, former WBU World Lightweight Champion Graham Earl, former WBU World Light Heavyweight Champion Tony Oakey, former WBA World Featherweight Champion Barry McGuigan, former British Super Middleweight Champion Paul Smith and his brother, British & Commonwealth Featherweight Champion, Stephen plus many, many more.

In addition to the boxers there were many celebrities, from the world of TV, Film and Music, that  also turned out to play or support their teams, as well as sign autographs and be photographed with some of  the thousands of fans that made the trek to Canvey from all over the country.

Sky Sports Ed Robinson, along with camera crew, also made the trip to Canvey to cover the event for Sky’s Ringside show and highlights from the event will be on this Thursday’s Ringside show, which goes on air at 6pm on Sky Sports 1 and repeated at 9pm on Sky Sports 3 and again at Midnight on Sky Sports 1.

After eight hours of nonstop football, featuring teams from all around the country, it was two of TRAD TKO’s that made the final. But before we get to the final each of the teams deserve a a mention and big hand for their magnificent efforts.

Last year’s Champions – Paul Smith’s Pick Pockets – got off to a poor start, losing to the TRAD TKO 1 team by a 2-1 margin. They did get to win their second match of the day, against the Boxing-Ireland.com team, by 3 goals to nil, and their third, against Ben Day’s Ringtone Gym team by a whooping 5-0 margin. Unlucky for Paul and brother Steven in the next round they come up against TRAD TKO supremo Johnny Eames’ All Star team – that not only featured boxers Nathan Cleverly, Rendall Munroe, Billy Joe Saunders, George Hillyard but also a couple of pro footballers – and had their hopes of lifting the trophy for a second year dashed by an exquisite, match winning, Nathan Cleverly goal. Then to make matters worse the Millbank team from Southampton held them to a 1-1 draw to prevent them even making the third and fourth place play-off.

Former World Champ Graham Earl bought his House of Champions team down from Luton. Graham had been so confident  he’d lift the trophy this year that he was trying to lay bets with everyone. It was lucky for him most ignored the offer as his first class squad failed to make the final, but they did make the third and fourth place play off, where they lost to the the third TRAD TKO team.

Joe Gallagher bought down a team of stars  from his gym, unfortunately for him he only had an eight man squad, as Paul and Steven Smith had their own team. Joe did his best to fire up his team but they fell to both Alan Smith’s Sarf London team and Russell Dopson’s Indee Rose  by a 2-1 deficit in the first two matches. In their third match they managed to hold the Boxing News team to a 0-0 draw but got well and truly thrashed 5-0 by TRAD TKO Clapton Rangers. In their final game they drafted in Paul and Steven Smith to bolster their hard worked team.

Last year’s ‘Wooden Spoon’ recipient Boxing News Rangers, having not just lost every game but also failing to score a single goal in the 2010 tournament, drafted in Barry McGuigan and Ben Doughty to ensure they did not to finish last this year. This clever move paid off in their very first match, where they beat Indee Rose by one goal to nil. Mind you in their very next match they got beat 3-0 by TRAD TKO Clapton Rangers.

Boxing-Ireland.com’s star player, Matthew Macklin, had to cancel due to another engagement the night before. However the boys that made the trip over from the Emerald Isles played their hearts out. They beat Ringtone 1-0 in their first match but got thrashed 3-0 by the back on form Paul Smith’s Pick Pockets in their second. Southampton Millbank took them down 1-0 in the third.  They more than made up for the two losses when they beat the TRAD TKO 1 team 3-1 in the fourth, but got turned over by the TRAD TKO All Stars 1-0 in their final game.

Alan Smith fielded the only female player in his Sarf London squad and boy could that girl play. She was good but the real star of the team was Bradley Skeet who played his heart out and even scored. Sarf London won their first game 2-1 against Joe Gallagher’s All Stars but things went down hill from there, losing 1 – 0 to Graham Earl’s House of Champions, 5-0 to TRAD TKO Clapton Rangers, 5-1 to Indee Rose.

Southampton’s Millbank squad, which had a large contingent of non-boxing sports personalities, proved to be a pain in Johnny Eames’ butt early on, by holding his TRAD TKO All Stars to a 0-0 draw in the first game of the tournament. So imagine Johnny’s joy when his TRAD TKO 1 team beat them 2-1 in the second match. Mind you they also did Johnny a big favour by beating Boxing-Ireland 1-0, Ringtone 4-0 and holding Paul Smith’s Pick Pockets to a 1-1 draw.

Ben Day and Scott Borthwick’s Ringtone Gym team suffered right from the start, not only did they only have an eight man squad but their main striker, the aforementioned Ben Day, suffered a pulled hamstring in the very first game – mind you that didn’t stop him playing! After the league element of the tournament was done Ringtone suffered even more, becoming this year’s ‘Wooden Spoon’ recipient  having lost 1-0 to Boxing-Ireland, 2-0 to TRAD TKO All Stars, 5-0 to Paul Smith’s Pick Pockets, 4-0 to Millbank and 3-0 to TRAD TKO 1.

Indee Rose’s dad Russell Dopson put together his own team for this year’s tournament, and bought along the noisiest legion of fans to support them!  What a bunch they cheered every move by the Indee Rose team, however that was not enough as they went down 1-0 to the Boxing News mob in the first match. You can imagine the cheers when they beat Gallagher’s All Stars 2-1 in the second. The fans were still cheering even when they lost 3-1 to Graham Earl’s House of Champions. They turned the noise level to maximum in the fourth match as the Indee Rose team went on the rampage to beat Sarf London 5-1. With a possible place in the third and fourth play-off beckoning if they got a win over TRAD TKO Clapton Rangers, but they didn’t  they got beat 3-0.

TRAD TKO Supremo put together three teams, the All Stars, a who’s who of boxing superstars, TKO 1, which featured boxers from the famous Canning Town gym, and Clapton Rangers which featured a mix of former footballers and celebrities. The strength and depth of the three teams really paid dividends as the All Stars and Clapton Rangers made the final and TKO 1 beat Graham Earl’s House of Champions 1-0 to secure third place.

Unlike the league section the third and fourth play-off and the final were played eleven a side and on a full size pitch.  As the result of the third and fourth place play off has already been mentioned, we’ll move on straight to the final.

Johnny was over the moon that two of his team faced each other in the final, especially after losing to Paul Smith’s Pick Pockets last year.

Clapton Rangers pushed forward  for most of the first half, the former footballers experience definitely coming into play as they controlled the game with crisp passing moves. Nathan Cleverly and his play making partner  Billy Joe Saunders  did their best to set up the odd counter attack, but were thwarted by the stronger defenses of the Clapton back three.

The All Stars defenders worked their socks off against the ever forward pushing Clapton juggernaut. Saying that the All Stars mounted a late attack, with George Hillyard starting the move with a cracking pass to Rendall Munroe who fthen flicked it into the path of a forward charging Billy Joe Saunders, who slotted a precision pass to Nathan Cleverly. With three defenders closing him down fast Nathan let rip with a vicious shot that look set to smash into the back of the Clapton net, if not for some excellent goal keeping.

After fourty minutes of non-stop action the score remained 0-0, it was that competitive, so it went to a penalty shoot out, which Clapton Rangers won by a 4-2 margin.

So there you have it, another cracking day that raised some much need funds for the Indee Rose Trust.

Highlights from the event will be on this Thursday’s Ringside show, which goes on air at 6pm on Sky Sports 1 and repeated at 9pm on Sky Sports 3 and again at Midnight on Sky Sports 1.

Public Enemy #1: Zuffa and Dana White Can’t Paint Agent Ken Pavia Into a Corner (EXCLUSIVE)

Posted on | August 31, 2011 | No Comments

MMA Agents Owner Ken Pavia

There was a time not so long ago when Mixed Martial Arts Agent Ken Pavia was considered a true golden boy in his field. A gentlemen among thieves and vultures, he built the kind of personal relationships with his clients no other agent entrenched in the sport could claim to covet.  Foregoing contract negotiations in more lucrative sports like hockey and baseball to focus exclusively on mixed martial arts, it was Pavia’s relentless and tireless hard work that created his eventual rise to fame and set him apart from his colleagues.  He earned a great reputation in the rough and tumble world of MMA as a guy who would really fight for his fighters. It was no surprise when a January, 2007 Sherdog article dubbed him “The Jerry Maguire of Mixed Martial Arts.”

Unfortunately for Pavia he would have no “who’s coming with me” moment when reality came crashing down on him in late 2010 after the most powerful and popular MMA league sued him for consorting with the enemy.

Zuffa, LLC (The parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championships) and their president Dana White decided to tear off his angel wings and make him the Pavmanian Devil. Google his name these days and you’ll encounter page after page of news about the lawsuit against him and Bellator Fighting Championships for a variety of trumped-up charges.

The 44-year-old self-made phenom suddenly faces an epic, slow-motion fall from grace. Pavia’s first attorneys mounted a half-hearted defense and tapped much of his financial resources only to bow out in the early stages due to a conflict of interest that came out of nowhere. Dana White passed down a decree mandating no Zuffa employee could even contact Pavia. He managed to hold on to just a handful of loyal Zuffa fighters who were willing to hang tight and deal with the complicated nuances of going around him to get deals done. Joe Silva, once a trusted friend and associate of Pavia’s, refused to run afoul of White’s instructions for fear of losing his matchmaking job with the UFC. He cut all ties with Pavia. White still wasn’t satisfied after taking so many steps to ostracize Pavia from the Zuffa club. He told Pavia personally that he wouldn’t stop until Pavia lost everything and killed himself, exhibiting how harsh Dana White can get when he’s angry. Eventually all the blacklisting efforts and legal wrangling would force Pavia to seriously consider selling the agency he built from the ground up.

Contrary to popular belief, though, there is life outside of Zuffa for a hard-charging, globe-trotting guy like Ken Pavia.

Responding in the comment section of an article focusing solely on his “cryptic” response to the lawsuit, Pavia wrote, “My shifted business focus has taken me to Russia, Poland, Bulgaria, and Atlantic City all within the last 5 weeks, so I have stayed busy.” For a guy who really lives and breathes MMA, it won’t be easy for Pavia to let go of his love of the game. He even drew blood training in the sport with some of his fighters in his earlier days, though he insists he’s “retired” now. Looking back at how far he’s come since getting out of law school a little more than two decades ago, it’s hard to believe Pavia will give up the fight completely, though. It’s even harder to believe that a former boxercise instructor like Dana White has a better reputation in the sport of MMA than a guy who’s literally shed the real blood, sweat and tears to earn the loyalty of his clients all across the world. Where White relies on power and money (and his rich casino baron friends) to wield an iron fist in the industry, Pavia’s greatest strength is his passion. Where fighters fear White, they respect Pavia.

For many of the mainstream MMA media, it’s hard to draw the line between what’s good business sense executed by White and the Zuffa brass and what’s outright spoiled brat temper tantrum antics. Are they protecting the brand or taking their ball and going home with it like they own the entire mixed martial arts landscape and nobody can fight in a cage without their aproval? In many cases, if you come down on the wrong side of their version of the truth, you’re up blacklist creek without a paddle. If you don’t see Zuffa’s world through their rose-colored glasses, you don’t get to see their world at all. The most critical reporting and exposing of the sordid truth behind how Zuffa really operates can mean the writer may never enjoy the courtesy of a UFC or Strikeforce press pass ever again.

Even the fighters are often intimidated to the point of waiting until the cameras stop rolling to really speak their minds. In the off-the-record words of one Strikeforce fighter I spoke to before the Zuffa buyout, “They [the UFC] like to keep you under their thumb.”  If it’s not the fear of being thrown out and going back to the smaller leagues that motivates Zuffa fighters it’s the allure of so-called “locker room bonuses” and the struggle to gain enough momentum to earn a title tilt.

Perhaps nobody outside the inner Zuffa circle understands how things really work in Zuffaland as much as Ken Pavia, and for that reason they simply had to excise him from the league like a malignant tumor. He became the man who knew too much, and he paid the price for putting the sport in a more big picture light and deciding to share with the competition rather than shun it.

Pavia, who graduated from UCLA in 1989 and Miami School of Law in 1991, still has 57 clients, including 2 former Zuffa world champions. In 2010 his fighters participated in 122 fights in 36 organizations in 12 countries. Though it’s been a difficult struggle for him to weather the storm of the Zuffa lawsuit, Pavia is not giving up. He’s built the kind of worldwide bridges that can’t be burned by the relentless attack coming from Zuffa’s hired legal guns.

The main problem with Zuffa’s attempt to oust Pavia is that he’s not about to go away quietly.  At some point all the blowhard attitude and misplaced animosity White can muster just isn’t going to be enough to win the day. Pavia’s gathered some incredible intelligence over his career that could be very damaging to Zuffa’s reputation if he ever decided to reveal the bulk of his secrets. One of these days Dana White’s going to end up shitting on the wrong doorstep and biting the wrong hand that feeds him. Ken Pavia just might be the guy who goes out with a bang and beats White at his own game, riding off into the sunset after making Zuffa choke on its Big League Chew.

‘Bazooka’ Joe Linenfelser sets sights on Henry Coyle

Posted on | August 30, 2011 | No Comments

CHICAGO (Aug. 30, 2011) – Despite squeezing in a four-round bout before curfew, against an opponent strictly in survivor mode, “Bazooka” Joe Linenfelser (10-1-1, 6 KOs) notched his 10th career win on the non-televised portion of the August 20 ESPN Friday Night Fights card in Indiana,. Now, the talented 23-year-old welterweight prospect is looking forward to a Chicago-style showdown in the not too distant future against Henry “Western Warrior” Coyle.

Faced with not fighting at all due to a midnight curfew, or dropping down from six to four rounds, Team Linenfelser chose the latter and “Bazooka” Joe went on to easily win a four-round decision against veteran Ruben “Modern Day Warrior” Galvan (27-18-4, 10 KOs). The much more experienced Galvan has fought world champions such as Zab Judah, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and Paul Spadafora, as well as world title challenger Dmitriy Salita.

“I’m happy to get another win against a guy who has been in the ring with a lot of tough guys,” Linenfelser said. “At first, I was a little upset that it was only a four-rounder because you can hurt a guy but he can still survive four rounds.Galvan pressured me until I hit him with a few good rights, and then he just held on to survive. I wish he had boxed more, or moved around a little, and I would have knocked him out if we fought another round. He really stopped fighting after the second round. In the locker-room, he said he didn’t want a rematch because of my power punching.”

Linenfelser won a decision by scores of 40-36, 39-37 and 39-37.

“Once Galvan felt Joe’s power and was wobbled the first time, he just put his head right in Joe’s chest, just trying to survive,” commented Joe’s father and manager, Jeff. “Ruben just held on but, when he was in Joe’s range, he almost got knocked out a few times in the last two rounds. After the fight, he said he was still wobbly and that he had never been hit as hard by anybody, harder than by Zab Judah. With it being only a four-round fight, Joe just threw as many punches as he could.”

Linenfelser now has his sights set on Coyle (16-2, 2 KOs), the former Irish National champion and 2006 World Military Games gold medalist. The Irishman lives and trains in Chicago, when he’s not fighting back at home, and the Linenfelsers believe there’s a natural bragging rights-type fight on the table.

“I went to one of Coyle’s recent fights in Chicago and afterwards I challenged him right there,” Joe explained. “I went there to watch him as a possible opponent for an upcoming fight. We thought that maybe he was a higher caliber fighter than me, but after watching him, I knew I was at least his equal, if not better. A win against him would get me some valuable media attention and rated. In another year, I hope to be fighting for a regional belt, and headlining on television. A big win against Coyle can help get me there.”

Jeff said the fight is a natural in the Chicago area and if the price is right, Team Linenfelser is all for it happening.“They’re two good prospects who come straight ahead,” he explained. “They’re not defensive fighters and somebody’s getting knocked out. It’ll be a good fight, not an easy one, but Joe will win. Coyle will be a good test for him.

“Coyle said something about Joe needing to first get past Ninos Abraham (6-0-1, 2 KOs) before getting a shot at him. The problem is Joe has already sent Ninos into retirement without ever landing a glove on him. We’d take a fight against Ninos, anytime, but he won’t fight Joe. Unless he does, none of the three Chicago-based promoters will ever use Ninos, because they all know about some very disrespectful things he said in public about Joe’s mother.”

When he made his pro debut October 8, 2005, stopping 181-fight veteran Donnie Penelton in the opening round of their fight in Iowa, 17-year-old Joe was the youngest professional boxer in the United States. Six years later, “Bazooka” Joe is ready to explode on the Midwest boxing scene.

BAMMA’s Liam Fisher Joins Noel Clarke’s MMA Movie Project As Associate Producer

Posted on | August 30, 2011 | No Comments

London, England – August 30, 2011 – It was announced today that Liam Fisher, Head Of Business Development for Europe’s largest and most prominent Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion, The British Association of Mixed Martial Arts (BAMMA), has signed on as an Associate Producer for the upcoming mixed martial arts movie being made by BAFTA winner Noel Clarke.

“It’s a real honor to work with Noel,” Fisher said. “I’m a big fan of his movies and knowing how much of an MMA fan he is, I know this project will be a very respectful, insightful and exciting film about mixed martial arts.”

Fisher will be primarily focused on brand partnerships and product placement within the movie, introducing both MMA and non-MMA related brands to the picture. In addition, he will be assisting Noel Clarke in authenticity within the film, including casting of MMA fighters.

Noel Clarke revealed the project through Screen Daily last month and announced that the movie will be in the vein of The WrestlerThe Fighter and Rocky.

Produced by his production company, Unstoppable Entertainment, Clarke has also written the script and will gain over twenty pounds in weight to play the lead, acting alongside some of the finest British talent and several MMA stars to be announced.

“I looked at films like The Wrestler and The Fighter and thought to myself ‘Why hasn’t there been a British film like that?’ I’m trying to expand what British Films do. When Adulthood and Kidulthood came out, there wasn’t anything like those, now it’s created a genre.” Clark said.

“I’ve been a massive fan of the sport (MMA) for a long time and this felt like the right time to make this film, as I’ve got more confident as a film-maker,” added Clarke, who has been working on the script for two years.

The currently untitled project has a distributor to be announced shortly and will go in to production this Autumn.

The 20-fight veteran competed at Bellator’s open tryout last year in Philadelphia, but had to cut his time short after suffering a knee injury. Healthy and ready to fight, “Binky” knows this is an opportunity of a lifetime.

“It’s just such an honor to be fighting for Bellator,” said Jones. “This is a tremendous opportunity and I’m looking to make the most of it. Even though I got this fight just a few weeks out, I’ve been training for this opportunity for the last year, and I’m ready to bring it on September 10.”

Training with former UFC lightweight Kurt Pellegrino in New Jersey, Caslow brings an impressive kickboxing background into the cage against Jones. While Caslow has one Bellator fight under his belt, the 27-year-old knows fighting in his home state will be a whole new animal.

“Atlantic City is like my backyard so it will be great to have that hometown crowd behind me,” said Caslow. “It’s an honor to fight for a great organization like Bellator, and I’m just excited for September 10.”

The night will feature a host of local feature fights, as well as four quarterfinal matches to kick off Bellator’s Season 5 Welterweight Tournament. The entire fight card is as follows:
