IVO DOS SANTOS JUDO QUALIFIER UPDATE

Posted on | August 30, 2011 | No Comments

Ivo Dos Santos was a guest on our radio show a few weeks ago to help us get a sense of how the world of Judo works. He is currently on a path toward reaching his goals of competing at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Here’s an update he sent us on his progress:

http://www.ivojudo.com/2011/08/26/worlds-2011/

Hey guys just thought I’d send an update on how I am progressing in my Olympic Qualifying journey. Well, it’s good news, I’ve managed some good results in Pan America through July as well as the recent World Championships in Paris. (read above blog entry for full rundown on Worlds).
The Olympic Qualifying phase is 15 months in to a 24 month period and at this point I am 16th on the Qualification order, the top 22 Qualify so it is looking very good as long as I continue my strong form.
Now I am home for a while to rest and recharge my batteries for my next batch of Olympic Qualifiers in November-December.
Some other things have been going on for me behind the scenes recently too. I have recently started teaching Judo classes at Evolve MMA http://evolvemma.com.au/ which is helping me raise funds for my Judo training whilst also providing me with the opportunity to pass on the many lessons I have learned in my own training.
My facebook page http://www.facebook.com/Ivojudo is an outlet where I am constantly putting out little bits of info in regards to training advice, competition info, instructional videos and motivational advice, if you have the time please check it out and like it if possible.
Hope you are all well, will send another update on my progress a bit further down the track.

Froch Tales

FROCH TALES
Los Angeles (Tue., Aug. 30) This past weekend, I read where Carl Froch again spouted incorrect, inaccurate and misleading information about our WBA Super Middleweight World Champion and Olympic Gold medalist Andre Ward and their upcoming bout.

Throughout the press tour, Andre kept the proceedings classy and gentlemanly, despite knowing Froch was rambling on to the media only when he was out of Andre’s presence. Froch is just learning about the big time, and what he doesn’t understand is Andre is way ahead of the curve and he won’t be drawn-in to respond to every foible comment Froch throws out there.

That being said, I want to make sure the blatantly irresponsible, damaging verbal assaults do not go unanswered by us.

Froch False Claim 1:

Froch comment on Sunday, August 28, 2011, “There have been stories about American boxers taking steroids, so you do wonder if people are taking things to give them the edge.  I will be raising the question with my promoter Eddie Hearn and he will probably do something about it, whether it’s a pre-fight drug test or blood test.”

LINK TO ARTICLE

Super Six Contractual Fact:

All the participants of the Super Six Tournament, including Froch, contractually agreed upon the World Anti-Doping Agency (“WADA”) mandated drug testing for each bout.

The World Anti-Doping Code was implemented in 2004 by sports organizations prior to the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, blending the rules and regulations governing anti-doping across all sports and all countries. More than 600 sports organizations have adopted the Code to date, including this Super Six Tournament Final bout.

Ward Fact:

Ward has been aggressively pursuing all information and costs as it relates to the most stringent drug-testing program in America for boxers.  He was on the record months ago in his pursuit of a clean sport and as recently as June 28, 2011, Andre was interviewed and quoted as follows about drug testing:

“I think Floyd [Mayweather] is on to something.”  “That’s kind of the reoccurring theme right now, the fact that everybody is saying that all fighters should take the tests.  It’s not only great for the fans and people to know, but you’re talking about people’s lives.  I wanted to take things a step-further and implement it, not just talk about it, and be one of the first to actually do it outside of Floyd Mayweather.  I believe Carl [Froch] is a clean fighter, but I just think that with a fight of this magnitude, it would be great for the sport to implement something like Olympic-style drug testing.  The goal is to go through with it even if Carl doesn’t want to.”

LINK TO ARTICLE

Froch Fact:

From the date of this article to this past weekend, there had been no word from Froch regarding Ward’s stated desire to undergo the most demanding drug testing for this bout, despite it already being a WADA mandated test within the framework of the Tournament; and now Froch wants to state, “I’m not happy about Ward and Conte.”

Sounds to me as if Froch is already making excuses in advance and undoubtedly barking up the wrong tree with Andre.

Froch False Claim 2:

Froch is on record claiming: “I’ve got dynamite in both hands.”

Froch Fact:

In his last 6 bouts Froch has only landed one KO against Jermain Taylor, and that one in the 12th round of a fight where Froch himself was knocked down in the third round. The other 5 bouts went the distance.

The facts don’t lie, and his self-proclaimed “dynamite in both hands” is a dud!

Froch False Claim 3:

“Sounds like [Ward]’s worried to me.  Sounds like he’s already trying to make excuses. I’m coming away from England to fight an American in America.  He’s got the advantages.”

Ward Fact:

In explaining the misconception that having the fight anywhere in America would be an advantage to Ward, Ward stated that Froch had already fought in Atlantic City, while he had not.

This elicited Ward being worried or making excuses?  It was just a fact.

Froch False Claim 4:

Froch said, “This is a guy who is an Olympic champion, he’s very fast, very skillful, but to be honest I did a better job on (Arthur) Abraham than he did.”

Abraham Fact:

“I think that the winner of the tournament will be Andre Ward. I have faced both Ward and Froch and know their abilities, and I give my preference to the American sportsman.”  -Arthur Abraham

The above ‘false claims’ are just a few of the many tales Carl Froch has indiscriminately and incorrectly thrown-out to provide hope for himself, with the caveat, Froch was sure to not make these comments in front of Andre Ward.

On the other hand, throughout the press tour, Andre Ward remained the professional, while keeping control of the day-to-day confrontations with Froch.

However, this last and most damaging innuendo to Froch’s credibility is his comment from this past weekend alluding to ‘the stories of American boxers taking steroids.’  It is just a nasty, unprofessional statement and another failed attempt to reign supreme, verbally.

On October 29 at Boardwalk Hall Atlantic City, Andre Ward will show his supremacy over Froch with his fists doing the talking!

Nick Mitchell and his Grandview Vikings to Play Host to NAIA Championships

Posted on | August 30, 2011 | No Comments

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced that Des Moines has been awarded the 2012 NAIA Wresting Championships. Grand View University will serve as the local host of the event, working in conjunction with Des Moines Area Sports Commission, which will take place March 1-3, 2012, at the Jacobson Exhibition Center at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Approximately 320 athletes from around the country will compete and 10 individual national champions will be crowned. Grand View started its wrestling program in 2008 and is one of the top wrestling programs in the nation. In its first three years of competition, the Vikings have crowned three individual champions, placed in the top ten each year, and the team placed fifth in 2011.

“Grand View is very excited to be the host of the 2012 NAIA Wrestling Championships. The popularity of wrestling in Des Moines and surrounding areas will make for a great atmosphere for the national event. We look forward to working with the NAIA and the Des Moines Sports Commission to provide a quality event for the athletes competing and the coaches and fans attending the Championships,” said Grand View Athletic Director Troy Plummer.

The state of Iowa has hosted seven previous wrestling championships. The 2011 Championships were help in Cedar Rapids and Sioux City hosted the event from 2005-08. The NAIA estimates that 5,000-8,000 fans attend the wrestling championships each year.

Des Moines to host 2012 NAIA Wrestling Championships

8/30/2011
Chad Waller, NAIA

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The 2012 NAIA Wrestling National Championships will take place in Des Moines, Iowa, March 1 – 3, which is a location change from the original agreement. The change occurs because of facility renovations at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau, Des Moines Area Sports Commission and Grand View University (Iowa) will host the 2012 event at the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center.

“The very nature of the circumstances surrounding this bid process required the NAIA to attract a quality venue and a solid host committee,” said NAIA Championship Sport Manager Scott McClure. “We’re confident that the host committee and the city of Des Moines will go the extra mile in making this year’s NAIA Wrestling National Championships at the Jacobson Exhibition Center an outstanding experience for our student-athletes, coaches and fans.”

The Exhibition Center was completed in 2010. The state-of-the-art facility has fixed seating for 3,500, meeting rooms, concession areas and a second-floor VIP area. The facility has hosted events such as the 2011 Wrestling Corn Cob Nationals, the USA Gymnastics Region IV Championships and is scheduled to host the 2012 Junior High Wrestling State Meet.

The 2011 event marked the seventh NAIA Wrestling National Championship held in the state of Iowa. Prior to Cedar Rapids, Sioux City served as hosts for six years in two different stints. The NAIA estimates that 5-8,000 fans attend the wrestling championships each year.

The 2013 NAIA Wrestling National Championships will go back to the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The dates will be Feb. 28 – March 2.

The championship consists of 10 individual weight classes with five different sessions during the three-day span. Wrestlers qualify for the championships in one of two ways: placing in the top four in any weight class at the Qualifying Group tournament or through an intercollegiate tournament during the season. For more information on qualification, click here.

In the history of the sport, there have been 19 national team champions as former member Notre Dame (Ohio) won its second-straight National Championship in 2011. The first NAIA Wrestling National Championships occurred in 1958 and were held in Mankato, Minn. The host school, Mankato State won the inaugural title. Currently, 37 varsity programs sponsor wrestling in the NAIA.

Edwin ‘La Bomba’ Rodriguez a serious player in the new super middleweight division

Posted on | August 30, 2011 | No Comments

WORCESTER, Mass. (August 30, 2011) – Unbeaten sensation Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez, eyeing a world title fight in 2012, has successfully advanced from prospect to legitimate contender in the super middleweight division.

Granted, the 26-year-old Dominican Republic native (19-0, 14 KOs) may not be ready right now for the likes of Lucian Bute, Andre Ward and Carl Froch, but in another year Rodriguez figures he’ll be ready to challenge the top 168-pound guns and, by then, the overall landscape in that weight class could be completely altered. Rumors have some of the super middleweight elite preparing moves up to the light heavyweight division in the not too distant future.

“I need two good fights against top 10 opponents and then I’ll be ready for a world title fight,” Rodriguez said. “I fought on August 20th at 174, but only because my opponent couldn’t make a lower weight. I have no issues making 168. I was able to stay focused the entire fight against Traietti. I wish the fight had lasted longer so I could have thrown more combinations. I’m extremely happy with my performance and have more confidence in my jab. Our game plan was to establish my jab in the first two rounds and then drop my right on him. But I caught him with a good body punch and the fight ended. I need to continue working on putting combinations together and being aware of fighting more defensively. I was disciplined in the gym and listened to Ronnie (Shields). The first time he (Traietti) rushed me, the old me would have tried to take him out right away, but I kept to the game plan.”

Rodriguez’promoter, Lou DiBella, feels he has something special in Edwin.

“Edwin Rodriguez is the best 168 lbs. prospect in the United States. His backstory is incredible and soon to be a major documentary. On October 21, Team Rodriguez is proud to be headlining another ShoBox, our home away from home. More details will follow.”

Rodriguez is coming off of a devastating second-round victory by technical knockout on August 20th at home, when he broke two of opponent Chris Traietti’s (10-3, 6 KOs) ribs, drilling a vicious right that caused breathing problems that prevented the Iraq War veteran from continuing to fight.

Larry Army, Edwin’s trusted manager, believes his ace owns the best body shot to come out of New England since “Irish” Micky Ward, as well as being, arguably, the top contemporary body puncher in the world. “Four of his last five fights ending in knockout were stopped after a single punch to the body against Traietti, (Ibraheim) King, (Kevin) Engle and (George) Armenta. Who else can make that claim? The other knockout was from an accumulation of punches, many to the body, against (James) McGirt. The only fight in Edwin’s last five that went the distance was when he dislocated his shoulder in the second round against Aaron Pryor Jr., who at No. 9 in the WBC ratings is somehow rated three spots ahead of Edwin. Most people in boxing think Bute is the best body puncher in the world and I honestly believe Edwin is his equal in that regard. He throws with such velocity.”

The reigning WBC USNBC super middleweight champion, Rodriguez is knocking on the door for a major fight, currently rated # 8 by the International Boxing Federation and the World Boxing Association, as well as #12 by the World Boxing Council and #13 by the World Boxing Organization.

Renowned trainer Ronnie Shields has worked with Edwin a little more than two months and only one fight, but the former two-time world title challenger senses greatness in his new protégé. “Boxing is always looking for its next star and I think it is Edwin Rodriguez,” Shields commented. “He has that style fans really love – he throws a lot of punches and is a real fighter. I was very happy with the way he fought against Traietti, even though it lasted only two rounds.Edwin fought on the outside, went to the body, and his jab was consistent. I never wanted to deviate from what he does best – throw a lot of punches. I want him to box more and he did. It’s boxing and he’s going to get hit, but I don’t want him to get hit as much as he had in the past.

“I’d say he’s improved 20-25 percent, but give us a few more months working together for his next fight and he’ll be improved 60-70 percent. When he has to go 12 rounds, he has to understand that it doesn’t mean going toe-to-toe for 12. He has to adjust depending on the style of his opponent. We’re going to work on him catching punches and falling back after he punches, but not taking away from his strong, forceful punching. Next, we want to test him against a top-10 fighter, to better judge when he’ll be ready for a world title fight.”

After a resoundingly successful debut at the Bell Centre last spring, Ringside MMA will once again make its presence felt inside its celebrated walls. It is with great pleasure and pride that Ringside MMA will present Ringside 12, in collaboration with evenko, on October 21st at theBell Centre in Montreal. With a super fight and 3 championship matches scheduled on the card, Ringside 12 will be the showcase the most talented Quebec MMA fighters of their generation.

The main event will feature an explosive battle of international proportions as Paul “Semtex” Daley (27-11-2) from England will face American Luigi “The Italian Tank” Fioravanti (22-10-0). Daley, a notorious KO artist (with 20 of his wins coming by way of knock out), is a UFC and Strikeforce veteran, and made his last appearance in Montreal at UFC 113 in the infamous number one contender’s match for the UFC welterweight title when he faced Josh Koscheck. He will be making his return to the Centre Bell after having faced such formidable fighters as Duane Ludwig, Martin Kampmann, Dustin Hazelett, Scott Smith, Nick Diaz and Jake Shields. Facing him will be Fioravanti, who in addition to M-1 Challenge is also a veteran of the UFC, , and his preferred method of attack is no secret to anyone. Having already stood toe to toe against the likes of Chris Leben, Jon Fitch, Forrest Petz, Luck Cummo, Diego Sanchez, John Alessio, Pete Spratt and Joey Doerksen, this fighter keeps the crowds at the edge of their seats with his fearless willingness to stand and fight.  Fight fans are sure to see an explosive battle between two warriors who use their fists to earn decisive victories rather than leave things in the hands of the judges.

In the co-main event of the night, Ringside MMA’s bantamweight and featherweight champions respectively, will battle for the 135 pound title in a 5 round match. Michel “Mitch” Gagnon (7-1), a 26 year old native of Sudbury and current champion at 145 pound, will make his debut at bantamweight after a successful and spectacular title defence last April when he stopped Rejean Groulx after a somewhat controversial takedown in what was already a candidate for fight of the year.  Though he is currently on a 5 fight win streak that has not seen him lose in over 30 months, he faces what could be his toughest challenge yet in his opponent, Stephane Pelletier(5-1),. This is Gagnon’s opportunity to be Ringside MMA’s first ever double title holder in 2 different weight classes simultaneously. Not looking to be anyone’s stepping stone, Pelletier turned heads after getting a submission victory over Mikael Pellerin only a few days after participating in tryouts for the reality show, The Ultimate Fighter. Only 3 months later at the Colisee Pepsi, Pelletier surprised the analysts with his 3rd consecutive win, a stoppage over the veteran  Dimitri Waardenburg, to win the Bantamweight title.

At lightweight, the vacant 155 pound title will be in play in a 5 round championship match that will put the Bellator veteran and Tristar trained Mike Ricci (6-1) versus one of the best Canadian fighters in his weightclass, Kurt “The Hurt” Southern (11-3), a formidable wrestler. Ricci’s record would have been perfect had it not been for the loss at hands of Pat Curran. He is known to be a well rounded athlete who possesses not only strong defence, but only an affinity for Muay Thai, and trains with the Canadian National Wrestling Team. However, well schooled in wrestling is Southern, who fought competitively in the sport for over 13 years before making his MMA debut in 2007. The Saskatchewan native has accumulated victories over the likes of Martin Grandmont, Brad Cardinal and most recently BJJ ace Jorge Britto. Currently riding a three fight winning streak, Southern is coming back to Ringside after his only appearance back in January, 2010.

Also on the main card of the evening, former Ringside welterweight champion  Alex “The Dominican Nightmare” Garcia (6-1) will make his return to the cage after losing his title and suffering his first loss at the hands of Seth Baczynski last April. Fighting out of Montreal, Garcia had won his first six matches over the likes of Ricky Goodall and Tyler Jackson. The undisputed top prospect in Canada will be making the first stop on his way back to the top as he meets the veteran Matt MacGrath (10-6) from Halifax. MacGrath has faced some of the best fighters in his weight class over the last three years including Matt Veach, Cory MacDonald, Claude Patrick, Jonathan Goulet, Ryan Machan, Kalib Starnes, and Marcus Aurelio, of which several are veterans of the UFC. Having lost to Aurelio by submission in May, MacGrath will be looking to get back to his winning ways at the expense of Garcia.

KIKO MARTINEZ OUT OF CARL FRAMPTON FIGHT

Posted on | August 30, 2011 | No Comments

Belfast fighter still on September 10 bill – opponent to be named in 48 hours

Matchroom Sport can confirm that European Super Bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez has withdrawn from his fight with Carl Frampton on September 10 at the Odyssey Arena through personal reasons.

Martinez’s father was taken ill during the young Spaniard’s training camp and has since had his leg amputated. The 25 year-old left his base to spend time with his father, and as a result has pulled out of the fight on the undercard of Paul McCloskey vs. Breidis Prescott, live on Sky Sports.

Frampton’s appearance on the bill will be his 11th pro outing and the man named as one of Sky Sports 11 to watch in 2011, with promoters Matchroom Sport working hard to secure a test for Barry McGuigan’s hot prospect.

“Irish fight fans can be assured that Carl will remain on the bill,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “He has trained for a big fight and that’s exactly what we are going to deliver for him, and we hope to name his opponent within 48 hours.

“Our thoughts are with Kiko and his family at this time and we wish them well.”

Tickets for Paul McCloskey vs. Breidis Prescott plus a full championship undercard led by Carl Frampton vs. Kiko Martinez are on sale now priced at £30-£150 (tickets may be subject to service charge) and available from the Odyssey Arena Box Office on 02890 73 9074, Ticketmaster 0844 277 4455 (24 hour). Tickets are also available in person from the Odyssey Arena Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, and online from www.ticketmaster.ie.
