Sefo Encouraged by Kickboxing Empire Excitement and Response at Las Vegas Card

If there’s anything kickboxing great Ray Sefo knows, it’s, well, kickboxing.   So when he says the Kickboxing Empire card Saturday, July 30, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas was good, believe him.   “I thought the matchups were great and it ended up being a great turnout as well,” said the former heavyweight champion. “Considering it was its (Kickboxing Empire’s) first event in Vegas, it was good. Everybody put it all on the line that night.”   Overall, Sefo says he was very pleased with the Kickboxing Empire event and says it bodes well for the area’s future with the sport. “It was absolutely a step forward,” said Sefo. “In terms of what K-1 did and then Kickboxing Empire stepping up and taking it over. That was the best show outside of K-1 that I’ve seen in Vegas. Kickboxing is my passion and I support Kickboxing Empire 100 percent.”   Most impressive to him were the two Minsk natives, Pavel Turuk and, especially, Dzianis Hancharonak.   Turuk scored a dominant unanimous decision over Las Vegas fighter Shawn Yarborough and Hancharonak recovered from a hard knockdown in the second round against Amsterdam’s Sergiano Herbert Cairo to win by KO 2:06 of the third round.   “They were the two guys that I was most looking forward to seeing and curious about, based on the fact that they both had over 230 amateur fights,” said Sefo. “In kickboxing, amateur and pro, there’s no difference other than one gets paid and one doesn’t. It’s full contact. So I was very curious about what they’d bring to the table and I was so impressed and they are so young. With that kind of talent, the sky is the limit.”   Sefo says working with his broadcast partner, the legendary Al Bernstein, was also the realization of a dream. “What an honor it was to work with him,” said Sefo. “I’m a huge fan of his. I’ve watched him call so many great fights. Al was an awesome guy who made my job easy because he was so relaxed and professional. I’ve been a commentator for K-1 all over the world for probably the last eight years and normally you get butterflies to start out, but this time I was very confident and we just allowed the action to speak for itself. I was able to just put in finer points in what I thought they could improve. I have nothing but nice things to say about Al. We’re so comfortable working together. I would do it again and again if they’ll have me.”   Sefo continues to train and fight and has even dipped his toe into some new ring sports. “I’m also doing pro wrestling on the side as well,” said Sefo. “I had my first pro wrestling experience three weeks ago. I’m due back in Japan the 24th of August. When you’ve been in kickboxing, boxing and MMA like I have, it makes pro wrestling a little easier, but you still get thrown around. Johnson Sees Motives Behind Team Bute’s Low-ball Offer

So, a way to get out is to try to low-ball where they think we won’t accept it, instead of saying ‘we don’t want to fight Glen Johnson.'”   “…the promoter is afraid of stepping him up a level. They want to keep him safe. They don’t have the confidence in him they should have.”   Formerworld champion and current top super middleweight contender Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson (51-15-2, 35 KOs) has been around a long time. He knows the ins and outs of the boxing business and that enables him to see through to the real motivations behind people’s actions.   That’s why when the promoters of IBF Super Middleweight Champion Lucian Bute make him an offer to fight that defies all logic because it issignificantly more than a million dollars less than the $1.35 million offer made to first potential opponent, Kelly Pavlik, he doesn’t get upset with the fighter.   In fact, the always-classy Johnson says he still likes and respects Bute a great deal.   “Bute is my friend and helluva a nice guy, but I believe that they’re low-balling me very badly, mainly because they don’t want the fight to happen. So, a way to get out is to try to low-ball where they think we won’t accept it, instead of saying ‘we don’t want to fight Glen Johnson.’ I’ve been around long enough to know when somebody’s serious about an offer and I believe the fighter himself wants to compete but the promoter is afraid of stepping him up a level. They want to keep him safe. They don’t have the confidence in him they should have. He’s a good fighter. He should have a great fight and maybe he wins and maybe he loses, but he’s ready for that fight.”   Part of the problem, says Johnson, is that Bute’s team remembers how it went when the two sparred in training previously.   “Bute knows the competition coming his way. I know he can compete well and he knows I can. We know each other and both of us know it’s not an easy fight. I think the promoter has to have a little more courage with their fighter. Don’t try to keep me from accepting by low-balling me.”   “They know fighting Glen is life or death. That’s why his people are offering to pay him so little,” adds Johnson’s co-promoter, Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing. “Glen got the better of him in sparring and they’re spooked.”   Margules, though, agrees it’s time for Bute to step up and have some career defining fights. “Look at the record. He hasn’t fought near the quality opponents Glen has and, in fact, he hasn’t fought one opponent in his career Glen wouldn’t be favored over if he fought them too.”   Johnson is quick to praise the network that has, time after time, afforded him terrific opportunities. “I give thanks to Showtime for doing such a wonderful job for me. They gave me great opportunities and I want to thank everybody involved with boxing at Showtime. To put me on the short list as an opponent for Bute shows they are trying to make competitive fights. I commend them for the wonderful things they are doing in boxing.”   “Glen knows he’s never been a flashy trash talking kind of fighter who always seems to get the monster paydays. He’s just a hard-working Jamaican kid who fought his ass off and he deserves respect for that,” added Johnson’s other co-promoter, Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment. “He appreciates everything Showtime has done for him, but the offer Bute’s people are making is unacceptable. Glenn needs a big fight, but sometimes you have to stand on principle. This is one of those times.”

BAMMA Introduces Their First Ever British Title at BAMMA 7 with a Battle Between Wales and England

London, England – August 12, 2011 – Europe’s largest and most prominent Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion, The British Association of Mixed Martial Arts (BAMMA), announced today that they have introduced their first ever British Title with a Middleweight contest between top contenders, Jack Marshman and Carl Noon.

 

As well as having a World title in each division, the organization will now put the British title into the mix with the aim of developing a British champion in each weight class. Unlike the World title bouts that are fought for over 5 x 5 minute rounds, British title fights will consist of 3 x 5 minute rounds, but will adopt the same unified rules as all other bouts.

 

Liam Fisher of BAMMA stated, “The introduction of a British Title allows us to develop the ever growing pool of talent in this country. Now we can give up-and-coming fighters a legitimate champion status to aspire to before they reach the level of fighting on a World stage. It’s only fitting that the pride of the Parachute Regiment from Wales will take on one of the toughest middleweight prospects in England to become the first ever BAMMA British Champion. It’s England vs. Wales, so as always, expect fireworks from the first bell!”

 

As a member of the British Armed Forces and former Army Boxing champion, Gwent born Jack Marshman recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Currently ranked as a private serving with 3 Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, Marshman is expected to be promoted to Lance Corporal very soon. His MMA record of 8-0-0 is even more impressive, given that he has only been fighting professionally for 18 months.  Marshman now joins the stacked BAMMA middleweight division, which includes champion Tom “Kong” Watson, Frank Trigg and former Commonwealth boxer John Phillips, to take on hot English prospect Carl Noon from Manchester.

 

Marshman had this to say about signing with Europe’s leading MMA promotion, “It’s a real honor to sign with BAMMA. I’ve been looking forward to this day for a long time and can’t want to fight for their first ever British Title. Like I always do, on September 10th I will be fighting for my country and I promise every one of my fellow Welshmen that I will be bringing home the belt.”

 

Carl Noon is no stranger to BAMMA gold, having the honor of being stable mates with World Lightweight Champion Rob Sinclair and World Featherweight Champion Mark Adams. Noon is undefeated in 3 years and enters the fight on a seven fight win streak. He is known for delivering incredibly exciting fights, with five of his seven wins finished in the very first round, including a first round submission win against Mike Ling at BAMMA 3 in 2010.

 

The Team Kaobon fighter had this to say’ “Not only will Rob Sinclair walk away from BAMMA 7 with his belt, I will bring yet another title back to Kaobon. Like everyone, I respect Jack’s courage for putting his body on the line for our nation, but come September 10^th when the cage door closes, all respect goes out the window. This belt is mine and there is no way a Welshman is taking it away from me!”

 

Compelling bout cards, arena sized venues, and high quality televised fight events. These are just a few of the qualities set the British Association of Mixed Martial Arts (BAMMA) apart from other fight promotions in the UK. These same qualities are what continue to draw top prospects to the fast-rising organization. Carl Noon and Jack Marshman are just two of the main top-level British fighters to recently sign for BAMMA. Other fighters include Andre Winner, Tim Radcliffe and Jason Ball.

SHO Sports News Brief: Al Bernstein Reports from The Bantamweight Tournament Final Press Conference

 LAS VEGAS (Aug. 12, 2011) – Both Joseph King Kong Agbeko and Abner Mares are predicting a tough, entertaining clash Saturday, Aug. 13 in The Bantamweight Tournament Final: Winner Takes All live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast). SHOWTIME announcer Al Bernstein caught up with the 118-pounders yesterday at the final press conference.

 

Agbeko, of Bronx, N.Y., by way of Accra, Ghana, will bring a record of 28-2 with 22 KOs into the 12-round bout. Mares, of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif., by way of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, is 21-0-1 with 13 stoppages.
