What the fighters and executives said Thursday:

JOSEPH KING KONG AGBEKO

“It’s great to be back. Las Vegas is like my home. I made my U.S. debut here. I want to thank my promoter, Don King, and all who made this fight and tournament possible.

“It may be Mares’ dream to become world champion but my dream is to become No. 1 pound-for-pound in boxing. A loss on Saturday would not give me that chance, so my only option is to win.

“I don’t understand why Mares is a (near 2-1) favorite. I’m the champion. I just want a fair fight.’’

ABNER MARES

“I want to thank everyone for the opportunity to do what I love, and that is boxing. I want to thank the media for the attention and support they give the little guys. I want to thank SHOWTIME for allowing me to enter this tournament and showcase my talent.

“The final is here and I’m really happy about that. I had a tough fight in my last fight against (VicDarchinyan and now I am ready make my dream come true.

“I am totally ready for this. There’s no way I can lose. The thought of defeat is not in my mind. I am ready for a war.’’

ALAN HOPPER (Vice President of Public Relations, Don King Promotions)

“On Saturday, we are going to have a barn-burner. In Joseph King Kong Agbeko, we have a true Ghanaian warrior who follows in the footsteps of greats like “The Professor” Azumah Nelson.

“This is for Abner Mares: If you want to know what I mean by this, just ask the head of your promotional company, Oscar De La Hoya about a fighter from Ghana by the name of Ike “Bazooka” Quartey. He knocked Oscar on his tail — but to Oscar’s credit he got up and knocked him on his butt and flurried at the end to win the fight. But he can tell you what it’s like to be in the ring with a warrior from Ghana. IBF bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko is one of these warriors.

“I say this so you know what you are up against, Abner. I wish you luck and may the best man win.”

DAVID ITSKOWITCH (Chief Operating Officer, Golden Boy Promotions)

“We’re very excited about the culmination of this tournament and on Saturday. Wwe are going to witness a great night for boxing.

“This tournament would not have happened without the visionary work of Ken Hershman and his staff who have done an outstanding job which we appreciate.”

CHRIS DEBLASIO (Senior Director Communications, SHOWTIME Sports)

“On behalf of Execute Vice President and General Manager SHOWTIME Sports, Ken Hershman and Executive Producer,David DinkinsJr., I want to thank the fighters for staying committed to this tournament. In Agbeko versus Mares, you won’t find a more competitive and compelling matchup this year in boxing.

“This fight is of major importance to the bantamweight division and on Saturday night we will see who the best bantamweight in the world is.

“Boxing, which began on the network in 1986, has always been our flagship sport and this bantamweight tournament is just one of the innovative ways that SHOWTIME Sports has made its mark in this industry.’’

FRANK ESPINOZA (Mares’ Manager)

“From day one, I knew Abner had the makings of a champion. Joseph Agbeko is one of the best in the world, but on Saturday we are going to see the coronation of boxing’s newest superstar.

“I want to thank Ken Hershman and everyone involved for this tournament.’’

ERIC MOLINA

“I love being here in this kind of big-fight atmosphere. When I started boxing, I could only dream of this kind of opportunity. I’m well-prepared and ready for a war.’’

WARREN BROWNING

“I’m not cocky, just confident. I am really looking forward to Saturday. Bring it on.’’

ERIC MOREL

“I’m extremely happy to be involved in this event. I want to fight the winner of Agbeko-Mares and win another world title.’’

CARLOS MOLINA

“I want to thank Golden Boy and everybody who had a part in making this show happen. This is a great card full of champions. I’m ready to put on a show on Saturday night.’’

Two titles on the line as Maguire and Beer defend the GOLD

The countdown is already on to the next Ultimate Challenge card which will see the sternest test of all for two of UCMMA?s most respected champions.

John ?The One? Maguire has looked unstoppable since claiming the belt last September and has met every challenge to his crown with tempestuous fury.

On September 17th, John Maguire will step into the cage to defend his title against a ferocious adversary in the always dangerous Peter Irving.

John Maguire, however, will not be the only champion defending his belt at the Troxy as featherweight kingpin Nathan Beer looks to avoid the world class grappling of Brazilian Luis Tosta.

Tosta brings a high level black belt submission attack to the table and this will undoubtedly be the toughest test of Beer?s career.

Maguire?s title is on the line but the welterweight war between Jamaine Facey and  Ross Pointon may well present him with his next challenger.

Both Facey and Pointon have dangerous knockout power and this fight has all the makings of a breakneck battle.

WBA Champ Austin Trout: I’ll Tame the Bull!

Posted on | August 11, 2011 | No Comments

cohen and troutUpon reading recent interviews with popular slugger Pawel “Raging Bull” Wolak and his new manager, Cameron Dunkin, WBA Light Middleweight champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout (23-0, 13 KOs) has the following message: “I’ll fight you.”

Trout says he’d be happy to accommodate Wolak and company’s desire to fight for a title. “I’ll put my belt up against him. He’s not winning it, but I’ll put it on the line so he can say he fought for a title.”

Trout, who successfully defended his title against Sonora, Mexico’s David “The Destroyer” Lopez (40-13, 23 KOs) on June 11 at the Auditorio Miguel Barragan in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, says a victory over Wolak in the US would up his visibility. On July 15, Wolak fought a Fight of the Year candidate with fellow contender Delvin Rodriguez at the Roseland Ballroom in New York.

“If they want a title shot, look no further,” said Trout’s promoter, Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions. “Wolak just had a tremendous battle on national TV and his stock is way up, so for Austin to fight him at this point in time would be terrific. Because of the path he had to take to the title, in Mexico, most potential opponents are afraid to fight Austin. This fight will help him start building a reputation in the States.”

Cohen says that Wolak’s promoters, Top Rank, shouldn’t hesitate to pick up the phone and make their fighters’ dreams almost come true.

“Pavel’s a good kid and it’d be a very entertaining fight, but Austin is a superstar in the making. This fight would go a long way toward establishing that.”

Eight Fights Added To BAMMA 7 Fight Card

Posted on | August 11, 2011 | No Comments

London, England – August 11, 2011 – Europe’s largest and most prominent Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion, The British Association of Mixed Martial Arts (BAMMA), confirmed eight more fights for their upcoming BAMMA 7 card at The NIA in Birmingham on September 10 including a lightweight bout between Jason Ball and UFC veteran Andre Winner, who is fresh off of signing an exclusivemulti-fight contract with BAMMA.

The Team Rough House fighter is excited about returning to the UK and joining BAMMA’s lightweight division which currently consists of champion Rob Sinclair, Leonardo Santos, fellow Ultimate Fighter participant Efrain Escudero and BJJ black belt Tim Radcliffe. Winner had this to say about signing with Europe’s leading MMA promotion“I’m really happy to be coming home and fighting for the very best in Europe. I look forward to putting on a good show for the fans.”

His opponent, Doncaster born Jason Ball, comes to the fight off a narrow decision loss to the current number one lightweight contender Leonardo Santos at BAMMA 6. Looking for a win to get back in the title race, Ball had this to say, “Andre is a great opponent and this will definitely make a great fight. But back to earn my title shot and if Andre is one of the men standing in my way then so be it.”
