BERNARD HOPKINS, WBC & Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight World Champion

“When you get tired of making history or tired of competing, you will get exposed.

“In basketball you can call time out. In football you can call timeout. In boxing either you fight or you quit.

“In my career I have gone 12-1 against southpaws. The only loss was to Joe Calzaghe, a fight which most people say I won. It was what it was. I love fighting southpaws because I am very unorthodox. I don’t do things regularly and I am not a regular fighter.

“When you look at my resume and then you look at Chad’s resume, it is like looking at Harvard and community college. No disrespect to community college.

“Age and wisdom cannot be compromised. I have a PhD in what I do. It says that I am 46 years old on my birth certificate. It can be argued that I m 10 years younger than I actually am.

“Me and Father Time are always debating whether it is time or not. I get cramps. I get aches. I am human and I am willing to take that chance. I am willing to walk that tight rope without a safety net. That is what fighting means to me. To be daring or to be dangerous takes courage.

“The light heavyweight division is alive right now. It isn’t because of my seven or eight pushups. It is because of the activity of my last two fights.

“I don’t want Chad to be the laid back Chad. I don’t need him laid back. To be laid back on an old man is not good; you are doing me a favor. I want you to give me something to work against so I can be better. I am a good dancer, if my partner is just okay, it makes me look bad.

[To Dawson] “Lets work together to see who whoops whose ass worse.

“Chumps do exist in boxing. This sport separates the chumps from champs.

“Chad Dawson has to prove that he belongs here and I have to prove that I’m special over and over again. I’m okay with that.

“I am looking forward to eventually breaking Archie Moore’s record of defending a title at the age of 47 or 48. I want that title. I want that record. I want that history.

“I didn’t expect Naazim to give me this money back [Richardson returned his compensation to Hopkins from the Pascal fight]. We can donate this money to a charity that Naazim feels should be supported. We can take this money and do something good. From you to me or me to you we will take this money and put it in a place where it can be productive for a worthy charity.”

“October 15 it is going down at STAPLES Center. History is going to be made again!

CHAD DAWSON, Former Light Heavyweight World Champion

“I want to thank Bernard for finally taking the fight. I want to thank Gary Shaw for believing in me even though I had a bad loss to Jean Pascal.

“I’m excited about my first pay-per-view fight. I have always wanted this fight. I have been chasing this fight for three years.

“A lot of people think I can’t punch. October 15, I am not going for a decision, I am going for a knockout.

“I don’t see any way Bernard can beat me. I have thought that for the last three years and I still think that now.

“Bernard better be on his A-game that night because I am going to be on mine.

“I am excited to be here. I feel better than ever. I’m problem free and stress free. I’m a new Chad.

“This is my ultimate dream. I’m excited.

“He can talk smack as much as he wants. Trash talking sells pay-per-view. I can trash talk, but I just don’t.

“I’m not concerned with what they say on the other side of the table. I’m concerned about them putting the belts around my waist on October 15.

“For me it’s all or nothing. I’m going to give it all or die trying.”

ANTONIO DEMARCOWBC #1 Rated Lightweight Contender

“I want to work to be world champion. I want to be one of the best.”

JORGE LINARESFormer Two-Division World Champion & WBC #2 Rated Lightweight Contender

“It’s an honor to be fighting on a card with Bernard Hopkins. It’s going to be a great night and a great fight for me.

“It’s like a dream to be here today and have this opportunity to fight here in the U.S.”

KENDALL HOLT, Former World Champion

“I am happy to be here. Not only because I am fighting, but because I am sharing the stage with two great champions.

“I am happy Danny Garcia took this fight. In order to become the best you have to beat the best and I am one of the best.

“I looked at Garcia when he was coming up and I said this kid has a lot of potential. I can’t wait to see this kid in the future. Golden Boy Promotions has done a good job with him. They have gotten him the right fights…up until now.

“When people ask me what my game plan is, I say ‘I am planning on hitting him a lot more times than he hits me.’

“Chad is one of my favorite fighters. Bernard Hopkins, you mean a lot to the sport. I have always admired you. It is going to sadden my heart a little bit to see Chad walk away with that belt.

“Danny, you will be a great champion, but it won’t be on October 15.”

DANNY GARCIA, Undefeated Top Junior Welterweight Prospect

“At 10 years old, I started boxing. I have been boxing for 13 years. This has been one of my dreams to fight at this level, to fight on pay-per-view.

“Brother Naazim Richardson told me when I was very young that everybody gets their chance to eat at the table, not everyone gets to eat at once. He told me that one day you will get that chance, and I think this is my time to eat.

“I have come too far. I sacrificed my childhood and sacrificed what I had to get to this point. After how far I have come, losing is not an option.

“October 15 is my time and I want to be seen as one of the best junior welterweights out there and do it on HBO Pay-Per-View.”

NAAZIM RICHARDSON, Hopkins‘ Trainer

“Chad Dawson is a great young fighter. I watched most of the kids grow up. I watched Kendall Holt, I watched Danny Garcia.

“This undercard is going to be awesome. I can’t wait for that.

“You cannot speak about this man [Bernard Hopkins] with anything other than respect.

“To say you don’t like Bernard Hopkins means you don’t like boxing.

“These kids grew up admiring Bernard Hopkins and learning from Bernard Hopkins.

“I have known Bernard for years. It has been an honor for me and the team to work with him. Seeing him in the ring and being a part of history was an honor. Bernard handed me my payment for the Pascal fight, but he was so outstanding and that was enough for me. [Richardson returns his payment to Hopkins].

“I believe in Chad. I believe he is a young light heavyweight. He might be the one of the most technically sound fighters Bernard has fought. Pascal was definitely the most dangerous.

“You cannot underestimate this man [Hopkins]. This is a living legend. This is a great athlete.”

ALEX ARIZA, Linares Strength and Conditioning Trainer

“We’re definitely not taking DeMarco lightly. We never do, but Jorge Linares will be ready.

“We haven’t seen a fighter like Jorge Linares in a long time with that speed power and boxing technique.”

ANGEL GARCIA, Danny Garcia’s Father & Trainer

“It has been a pleasure to see Danny grow up and to be a part of his career. This is the time for Danny ‘Swift’ to make a difference.

“When Danny was born, I knew he was going to be a champion. I knew he was going to be a fighter. He is going to be one fine champion which is what he was meant to be.

“He will become one of the top junior welterweights. We are not taking Kendall Holt lightly, but I hope he isn’t going to take Danny lightly either.

“These are American fighters. These are the ones you [to media] have to make relevant. They are the ones who wear the red, white and blue and represent our country.

“Danny is going to be the junior welterweight champion of the world. As long as I am breathing, that is going to happen.”

RICHARD SCHAEFER, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions

“This is a fight that has been in the making for quite a while. We are happy for the light heavyweight division. We are happy for the sport.

“We have done many fights at Golden Boy Promotions. I think we have come up with many good fight names. There was ‘The World Awaits’ and ‘Lightweight Lightning.’ I really think we really came up with the perfect title for this fight. ‘Believe It Or Not!’

“Ripley’s Believe It Or Not is a global organization. I encourage those of you who have not been there to visit one of their museums around the country. They are going to promote this fight in their museums and we are very happy to have a real American brand involved in this fight with real American fighters.

“Bernard made believers out of all of us when he beat Kelly Pavlik. Believe me, everyone watching the fight will be believers come October 15.

“I get chills every time I introduce Bernard Hopkins. He is truly a legend.

“Some people don’t realize they’re witnessing history until after the fact. Bernard Hopkins is making history.

“‘Believe It Or Not!’ I think Bernard Hopkins has made believers out of all of us throughout his career.”

GARY SHAW, President & CEO of Gary Shaw Productions

“What Richard and I wanted to do more than anything was to give the fans a great pay-per-view undercard in addition to a great main event. Linares and DeMarco is a great fight. Holt vs. Garcia is a great fight and of then you have the main event.

“It is going to be one hell of a great card. For those going to STAPLES Center and for those of you who will watch it on pay-per-view, you are going to get your money’s worth. We guarantee it.

“We have been chasing Hopkins around the world for three years now. We are glad the cat caught the mouse.

“They [pointing at Golden Boy Promotions’ fighters] are the ‘believers’ and we are the ‘nots.’ This is going to be a big night for Gary Shaw Productions at STAPLES Center and you are going to find out why the believers don’t come true.

“Bernard has done a lot for this sport, but he might not get his due for all that he has done and I mean that.

“Chad is younger. Chad is faster and he is going to be working his jab. His jabs are going to be going up and down faster than Bernard can see them.

“Bernard, with all due respect, you aren’t getting in Chad’s head. It ain’t happening. When the bell rings, Chad is going to jump you’re ass right from the opening bell. You know that and your trainer knows that.”

ANDREA SILVERMAN, General Manager of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Hollywood Attraction

“Ripley’s is honored to be a part of Bernard’s journey as he is a true ‘Believe It Or Not!’

“Amongst Bernard’s endless list of achievements, at age 46, he is the world’s oldest champion in boxing history.

“In 1918, Robert Ripley, an illustrator for a small newspaper, published his first cartoon: Champs or Chumps? Now almost a hundred years later we’re going to find out who is the champ and who is the chump!

MICHAEL HIRSCH, General Manager of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Odditorium Times Square

“Bernard Hopkins’ career is a living breathing Believe It Or Not! including being the oldest person to win a world title. He fits all of the Believe It Or Not! characteristics.

“We are going to have Bernard immortalized in our museums across the world.

“We are really thrilled to be a part of this event. It is our first endeavor being a part of something like this.”

Jimmy “Judo” Wallhead Replaces Injured Tom Watson to Face Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg at BAMMA 7

Posted on | August 10, 2011 | No Comments

London, England – August 10, 2011  Europe’s largest and most prominent Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion, The British Association of Mixed Martial Arts (BAMMA), confirmed today that a back injury has forced Middleweight Champion Tom “Kong” Watson to withdraw from his title defense at BAMMA 7 against Frank Trigg. Former Bellator welterweight tournament participant ‘Judo’ Jim Wallhead (21-6) has agreed to step in for the injured Watson and will face Trigg in a non-title bout.BAMMA 7 will take place on September 10 at The National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.

Jim Wallhead (21-6), stable mate of Paul ‘Semtex’ Daley and Dan ‘The Outlaw’ Hardy, was riding an impressive eight fight win streak prior to suffering a recent loss to Rick Hawn at Bellator 35. Wallhead went undefeated for three years prior to his loss to Hawn and clinched numerous victories, including impressive unanimous decision wins over Che Mills and Ryan Thomas. Determined to come back strong, Wallhead jumped at the opportunity to step in for the inured Watson to face UFC veteran Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg, in what is sure to be an all-out war in the cage.

Jimmy Wallhead had this to say, “I’m really grateful BAMMA have given me this chance to fight on such a big card against a high level athlete like Frank Trigg. It’s a test that I’m looking forward to but I hope he doesn’t think I’m just a late replacement who is there for a quick payday, I’m there to get back to where I belong, at the top, above people like him.”

Tom Watson, who hopes to be fully recovered and back in action by December for BAMMA 8, asked BAMMA executives to issue the following statement regarding his withdrawal.

“It is with massive regret that I have to postpone my fight with Frank Trigg. As you may or may not know, I recently suffered a back injury. Unfortunately, after several sessions with multiple doctors, I have been informed that I will not be cleared to fight. Two different doctors have said that they cannot clear me to fight in September, meaning that not only would I fail my medical, but also that BAMMA would be putting my health at risk, something they are not willing to do,” stated Watson.

“Respectfully, BAMMA has decided to move my title fight, as fighter safety is of paramount importance to the BAMMA organization. I am hoping to be fully recovered and cleared to fight in time for BAMMA 8 in December.  Please continue to read my blog on MSN.co.uk and follow me on Twitter at @tomkongwatson for updates on my recovery. I look forward to seeing you all at BAMMA 7 anyway for a great fight card. Adios for now, I’ll be back soon!”

In addition to Wallhead vs. Trigg, the BAMMA 7 card will also feature a championship bout between BAMMA’s World Lightweight Champion Rob Sinclair and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Leonardo Santos. Additionally, Ultimate Fighter Season 8 winner Efrain Escudero will face reigning UCMMA Lightweight Champion Tim Radcliffe. This is an exciting night of MMA action that fight fans will not want to miss!

Many more fights are expected to be announced over the next 24 hours, so stay tuned!

GoDaddy.com presents BAMMA 7 in association with Lonsdale and PKR.com on Saturday September 10th at The National Indoor Arena, Birmingham, UK – Buy Tickets from  www.bamma.com  and  www.theticketfactory.com  or watch it live and exclusive on Syfy (UK) at 9pm GMT, The Fight Network (Canada) and worldwide at www.bamma.tv at 4pm ET / 1pm PT

WBA & IBA World Light Heavyweight Champion Beibut Shumenov ready to take on any champions or top contenders

Posted on | August 10, 2011 | No Comments

LAS VEGAS (August 10, 2011) – Unification remains the goal for World Boxing Association (“WBA”) and International Boxing Association (“IBA”) light heavyweight king, Beibut Shumenov. If, however, none of the other 175-pound world champions – Bernard Hopkins, Tavoris Cloud and Nathan Cleverly – are willing or available to put their title belts on the line against Shumenov, the 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian is interested in taking on former world titlists and leading contenders Jean Pascal and Zsolt Erdei.

Moments after Shumenov stopped three-time world title challenger Danny “The Bronx Bomber” Santiagoin the ninth round, unloading 23 unanswered punches before the fight was halted, Beibut was being interviewed on TeleFutura’s “Sólo Boxeo Tecate” live from South Point Hotel Casino in Las Vegas.

Standing in the ring next to Shumenov during post-fight interviews was Pascal, who said he wanted to take Shumenov’s title belts back to Canada. Beibut quickly accepted the challenge with a qualifier, directly saying to Pascal, “You’re from Canada, I’m from Kazakhstan; so, let’s do it where all champions dream of fighting…Las Vegas.”

Shumenov’s first option, naturally, would be to fight Pascal in Kazakhstan, where it would be a huge draw. But In 29 pro fights, Pascal (26-2-1, 16 KOs) has fought only twice outside of his adopted home in Canada, the last time in 2008 when he lost a 12-round decision in the United Kingdom to Carl Froch for the vacant WBC super middleweight championship. “Pascal is a top-level fighter,” Shumenov said about his potential challenger.

If Pascal won’t leave his adopted Canadian home to challenge world champion Shumenov, two-time, two-divisional world champion Erdei (33-0, 18 KOs) is another potential challenger.

“Erdei’s people have already shown interest in fighting me if Pascal isn’t,” Beibut noted. “Erdei is unbeaten and a two-time world champion, first at light heavyweight and then as a cruiserweight. He’s moved back down to light heavyweight and is a top challenger, more of a boxer than puncher, and now he trains (Philadelphia) in the U.S.”

Erdei and Pascal are rated No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, in the current WBA ratings. Shumenov, who says he’ll fight one more time in 2011, concluded, “I’m ready to fight any of the top light heavyweights in the world.”

Shumenov (12-1, 8 KOs) set a light heavyweight record for capturing a world title in the fewest career fights, 10, when (Jan. 10, 2010) he won a 12-round decision against Gabriel Campillo in Las Vegas. In three successful world title defenses, Shumenov won a unanimous 12-round decision versus No. 1 mandatory challenger and previously undefeated Viacheslav Uzelkov (UDEC12), followed by a six-round knockout of three-time world champion William Joppy (KO6), and then his recent victory by ninth-round TKO versus WBA No. 15-rated Santiago.

In only 13 pro fights, Beibut has defeated four world champions (Campillo, Joppy, Byron Mitchell and Montell Griffin), as well as three world title challengers (Uzelkov, Santiago and Epifanio Mendoza

Billy Joe Saunders To Captain Star Studded TRAD TKO Boxers Team This Sunday.

Posted on | August 10, 2011 | No Comments

Former Olympian and rising Middleweight star Billy Joe Saunders has been named captain/co-manager of the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym’s football squad for this Sunday’s Boxers and Celebrity Charity Football Tournament, in aid of the Indee Rose Trust, at the Concord Rangers FC in Canvey Island, Essex.

Billy Joe, who will be captaining the team for the second year in a row, has proved to be nothing less than sensational since turning professional in 2009, having stopped six of his nine opponents.

His scintillating performance, that secured a second round stoppage victory over Kevin Hammond, on the undercard of the Groves-DeGale Super fight back in May, was the fight of the night and rightly earned the twenty one year old from Hatfield many new fans as well as his first title tilt this coming September.

On Sunday Billy Joe will be heading up a star studded squad that includes fellow TRAD TKO Gym mates WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight Champion Kevin ‘Mighty’ Mitchell, ‘Pretty’ Ricky Boylan and Eddie Corcoran as well as WBO Light Heavyweight Champion Nathan Cleverly and WBA International Super Bantamweight Champion Rendall Munroe, Former British and European Light Middleweight Champion Jamie Moore, Middleweight George ‘The Grill’ Hillyard as well as a handful of  ‘ringers’ from the pro-football ranks.

Prior to his training session today Billy Joe spoke briefly on the tournament, “Last year we made it to the final, only to lose to Paul Smith’s team. It was a good day out, I really enjoyed it, it was good fun and we raised a lot of money for charity, which is what it’s all about. Hopefully we’ll do the same this year.

Johnny’s put together our team for this year, but they’re not that good, besides me that is.  But it’s a couple of weeks away so i’ll get all my players ready and we’re ready to come.”

On Friday last week Billy Joe spoke with iFilm’s Kugan Cassius about the Boxers and Celebrity Charity Football Tournament, video of the interview can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBg3065rXdY

On August 14th Billy Joe will be joining TRAD TKO supremo Johnny Eames, and boxing stars Nathan Cleverly, Matthew Macklin, Kevin Mitchell, Ricky Burns, Barry McGuigan, Paul and Stephen Smith, Willie Limond, Tony Oakey, Ross Minter, Martin Power etc.; will be joined by celebrities such as Alex Reid (MMA), Johnny Borrell (Razorlight), Mark Wingett (Jim Carver – The Bill), Stephen Bell (Coronation Street), various of the Eastenders and Shameless cast etc. at the Concord Rangers FC ground on Canvey Island.

The TRAD TKO Boxing Gym promoted Boxers and Celebrity Football Tournament, in aid of the Indee Rose Trust, kicks off at 12:00pm at the Concord Rangers FC, Thames Road, Canvey Island, Essex on Sunday 14th August 2011.

Tickets for this special event, priced: Standard: £10.00 and V.I.P. £20.00, are available on-line from www.tkoboxoffice.com  or in person from the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA

Children’s tickets, priced £5.00, will be available on the day.

UFC® WELTERWEIGHT CONTENDER DAN “THE OUTLAW” HARDY READY FOR WAR

Posted on | August 9, 2011 | No Comments

“My hand will be raised at the end,” says Dan Hardy about his next UFC fight this weekend with Chris Lytle.

They say that the most dangerous fighter is one with his back against the wall.

For Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy (23-9-0-1), that may be just the thing that carries him to victory when he faces Chris “Lights Out” Lytle at “UFC® on Versus 5: Hardy vs. Lytle” this Sunday, August 14th, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

“My goal is to be the first person to knock Chris out. I’m not sure when it will come or how it will come, but I have a lot of options, a lot of techniques that would get him out of there before the final bell.”

“The Outlaw” and “Lights Out” have garnered well-deserved reputations in MMA as “kill or be killed” artists that like to test their opponents’ chins. Between the two of them, they have perpetrated nearly forty stoppages in their careers. In short, the end result of these two locking horns is almost surely to be one of them on their back looking up at the lights in the arena.

When asked about his thoughts on a potential slugfest with Lytle, Hardy said, “That’s what I’m hoping for! Chris is an exciting fighter, and he always brings the fight. I’m sure this fight won’t be any different. I’m always fine with trading punches until someone falls over…I like my odds in that gamble.”

Point blank, are you a better striker than Lytle, Dan? “Yes, and I will prove it.”

Sponsoring “The Outlaw” for this main event fight will be top MMA brand Revgear. Hardy has been training with Revgear products in advance for the all-important bout, and has been very happy with the results. “Revgear products are awesome…it’s all I have been using for the past couple of months,” he explained. “The shin-guards and sparring gloves are the most comfortable and well-designed I have ever used. I love my new Revgear training bag, too. I usually destroy my kit bag in a couple of weeks, but this one is indestructible!”

Many fight fans don’t realize just how important sponsorships are to the fighters. But they are. “Sponsorships make a lot of things affordable for fighters that wouldn’t usually be possible,” stated “The Outlaw.” “I can use sponsorship money to travel for training, bring coaches in to help with camp, and go to see chiropractors and massage therapists to keep me healthy. Sponsorship makes for better, healthier fighters, and better performances.”

On another note, many fans want to know how to get started in MMA. What advice would “The Outlaw” offer those desiring to enter the ranks of the world’s fastest-growing sport? “It’s much easier now to get into MMA than it was when I started. Look up your local MMA gym…most cities have at least one now. If not, get into a Muay Thai or BJJ gym and learn the basics.”

For the time being, however, there’s only one thing on Hardy’s mind: Chris “Lights Out” Lytle. And his prediction for the fight is simple: “All I know is that the fight will be a war while it lasts, and my hand will be raised at the end.”
