BROOK RETURNS TO FACE JACKIEWICZ IN SHEFFIELD

Posted on | August 9, 2011 | No Comments

‘The Special One’ faces ‘Braveheart’ in World Title eliminator

Kell Brook will defend his WBA Inter-Continental title against Rafal Jackiewicz in a World Title eliminator on Saturday 8 October, at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield, live on Sky Sports.

The unbeaten Welterweight star claimed the belt against Lovemore N’dou in his last outing in the Steel City in June. Brook took his professional winning streak to 24 fights against N’dou and will move a step closer to his dream World Title shot with a win over the 34 year-old Pole.

Former undefeated European Champion Jackiewicz, who is rated fifth with the IBF and number 10 with the WBO, has lost just one of his last 24 fights and has never been stopped in his 48-fight career. Jackiewicz successfully defended his European strap twice, including a victory over Jan Zaveck, who he then challenged for the IBF title, losing a majority decision.

“I can’t wait to fight in Sheffield again,” said Brook. “The atmosphere at the Lovemore N’dou fight was incredible and I’m sure it’s going to be even better at Ponds Forge. Jackiewicz is a tough opponent who has held the European belt and challenged for a World Title so he will provide a great test for me.”

“I’m delighted to bring Kell back to Sheffield again on October 8, especially after the special atmosphere that the fans created at his last fight,” said Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn. “Rafal provides the next step up in terms of tests for Kell and with both fighters knowing they are on the verge of a World title shot, a slip up here can destroy any dreams so you can expect an explosive fight.

“Kell is on the threshold of a World Title shot and victory against Jackiewicz could set up an early 2012 shot with WBA Champion Vyacheslav Senchenko. I’ve also had discussions with Lou DiBella about the prospect of meeting Andre Berto should he capture the IBF title against Jan Zaveck in September and with Rafal’s number five IBF rating, this is a real possibility.”

Tickets for Kell Brook vs. Rafal Jackiewicz, plus a full championship undercard, are on sale now from Matchroom Sport price £30 unreserved, £50 ringside and £80 inner ringside – call 01277 359900.

TERRIFIC CARD FEATURING PHILLY’S FINEST FIGHTERS THIS FRIDAY NIGHT AT HARRAHS IN CHESTER, PA

Posted on | August 9, 2011 | No Comments

Vasquez, Ferrante, Ocasio, Dawejko and Tiberi to see action on sizzling fight card this Friday night at ROUND 4

CHESTER, PA (August 9, 2011)—This Friday night a fantastic night of action is set to take place at Harrahs in Chester, PA.

The card dubbed ROUND 4 will be promoted by Joey Eye Boxing and David Feldman.

In the main event, popular lightweight Victor Vasquez will take on Angel Rios in a eight round bout.

The co-feature will pit Tony Ferrante of Philadelphia battling William Prieto in a six round Light Heavyweight affair.

Vasquez of Philadelphia has built up one of the biggest fan bases in Philadelphia due to his exciting style which always has him in the fight of the night whenever he steps into the ring.

Vasquez twenty-eight years old has a record of 13-5-1 with seven knockouts and has been in some memorable fights in his young career.

In his last bout, Vasquez was impressive in disposing of Gustavo Dailey (4-11) in round four to headline ROUND 3 at Harrahs in Chester on June 3rd.

Vasquez waged a terrific back and forth war with Osnel Charles before dropping a six round majority decision as part as ROUND 1 at Harrahs in Chester.

He holds victories over undefeated Thomas McCuiston (1-0); Tyric Robinson (9-4-1) as well as an exciting six round split decision over Bryne Green (5-3) on October 8th in Philadelphia.

Rios of Bronx, New York has a record of 9-5 with six knockouts and has been in with top competition.

He won eight of his first nine bouts and has faced future world champions Nate Campbell and Mike Anchondo.

Rios came back after an eight year hiatus and dropped a six round decision to Stephen Owusu on July 7th in Bronx, NY.

Ferrante, 27 years old, has a record of 11-2 with six knockouts, won his first nine bouts which included wins over Anthony Pietrantonio (6-1) and he won the WBF United States title with a eight round majority decision over Billy Bailey.

Ferrante lost that title when he dropped a ten round unanimous decision to Chuck Mussachio (15-1-2).

Ferrante will be looking to make it three in a row after disposing of Joe Park as part of ROUND 3 at Harrahs in Chester in the fourth round on June 3rd.

In his last bout, Ferrante stopped grizzled veteran Andre Hemphill in seven rounds on July 15th.

Prieto has a record of 5-5-1 with two knockouts which is impressive considering the top opposition he has fought.

He has been in the ring with six undefeated fights plus other fighters with gaudy records.

He holds wins over then undefeated Jesse Blount (2-0); Nate Adams (2-0) and Eric Jarvis (2-0).

He has also been in the ring with world ranked Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (5-0); Durrell Richardson (8-0); Issac Rodrigues (9-0).

He is looking to get back in the win column after dropping his last two to Aaron Pryor Jr. (11-1) and his last bout to Harry Coyle (13-2) on April 9th.

Angel Ocasio will see action in his first scheduled six round bout as he battles Rasool Shakoor in Lightweight affair.

Ocasio of Philadelphia has a perfect mark of 5-0 with one knockout and is coming off a four round unanimous decision over Randolph Scott on June 3rd as part of ROUND 3 at Harrahs in Chester.

Shakoor of Jackson, Michigan has a record of 3-8-1 with one knockout but has faced even undefeated fighters.

Those fighters include Dat Nguyan (3-0); Angelo Santana (1-0); Carlos Zambrano (2-0); Guillermo Sanchez (5-0); Omar Pena (1-0-1) and Jesse Carradine (4-0).

Shakoor holds a win over than undefeated and Roy Jones promoted Kieyon Bussey (6-0).

In his last bout, Shakoor was stopped in one by Eric Nemo (8-1-1) on July 31st, 2010.

Former world amateur champion Joey Dawejko will look to stay perfect when he battled Keon Graham in a Heavyweight bout scheduled for four rounds.

Dawejko of Philadelphia has a record of 4-0 with one knockout.

In his last bout, Dawejko was a part of the historic Harrahs fight night ROUND 1 when he scored a four round unanimous decision over Taffo Asongwed on January 22nd.

Dawejko just hooked up with trainer Danny Davis and this will be the first bout that two will be working together.

Graham has a record of 2-6 and is coming in from Akron, Ohio.

Like Shakoor, Graham is now stranger to fighting undefeated opponents as Dawejko will be the fourth such unblemished foe.

He has lost to the likes of Brian Clookey (1-0); Magomed Abdulsalamov (7-0); and Keith Barr (5-0).

In his last bout, Graham was stopped in two by Felix Abner on May 18th

Rounding out the card will be popular Lightweight Joey Tiberi.

Tiberi of Newark, Delaware has a record of 5-1 with four knockouts and has appeared at the previous three fight nights at Harrahs.

He has won three in a row which includes a first round stoppage over Nicholas Morris on June 25th.

Tiberi’s opponent will be named shortly.

BORN AND BRED

Opens its theatrical run at LA’s Downtown Independent and NY’s QUAD Cinema

on August 19, 2011

Innocence and Violence in the Sport of Sports

New York, N.Y. – August 8, 2011 – The Downtown Independent and QUAD Cinema is pleased to present the Los Angeles and New York premiere of the powerful new documentary BORN AND BRED (94 minutes), directed by Justin Frimmer.

Set in the east side of Los Angeles, America’s new amateur boxing capital, BORN AND BREDtracks three teenage fighters as they train for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team and for careers in the professional ring.

For ten years, 15 year-old twin brothers Oscar and Javier Molina have followed in the footsteps of their father, a boxer from the gang-war torn district of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Their older brother boxed. Their cousins boxed. It’s a family tradition.

Their trainer, Robert Luna, a former Army Ranger who failed in his own boxing career is intensely ambitious for his young prospects. Not only does he believe that the twin brothers have immense natural talent, he believes his years in the sport were a prelude to his own career as one of the great trainers in boxing. Luna knew the Molina brothers were a unique pair the moment they walked into his Commerce Boxing Gym a decade ago. “They were tough, humble, nice kids. But when I started working with them, you could tell right away they had something special.”

Down the street, at the Eddie Heredia Boxing Gym, head trainer Rodrigo Mosquera, after failing to raise his own sons to be world class boxers, works with his own young prospect. Mosquera is convinced that twelve year-old Victor Pasillas, undefeated in 70 consecutive bouts, is a future world champion. Victor has a relentless drive and a precocious understanding of the sport defeating opponents with a vicious force no one expects from such a small kid.

While the twins are soft spoken and do what they’re told, Victor is pure machismo and does what he wants. “When I get in that ring, I look across it to see if my opponent has any heart,” he tells the camera. “If he doesn’t, I take him out right away. If he does….I take it away from him. I make sure he has no heart.”

Apart from the kids’ battles in the ring, BORN AND BREDtells back stories of their parents harrowing journeys across the U.S. border, their hopes for their children, and reveals the boys’ deep belief in who they have been taught to become-inside and outside the ring.

“The very first time I went to a local boxing event,” relates director Justin Frimmer who shot the film in a fast-paced, cinema verité style, “I knew in my gut that there was something very powerful happening that hadn’t really ever been documented on film. There was just an intense vitality in the mixture of the violence in the ring and the innocence of the children. It was raw human drama. Once I started shooting, the stories took over.”

Shot over four years, BORN AND BRED includes material of the immigration protests that erupted in 2006 and sets boxing against the backdrop of the immigrant experience.

Boxing has always been an ethnic-centric sport. Over the decades boxers have represented each of the waves of American immigration and a way out of poverty and into power. According to the 2008 census, nearly 40% of residents in Los Angeles County are now foreign born, the highest since the Ellis Island generation of the early 20th century. Like generations of immigrants before them (Germans, Italians, Jews) and other ethnicities entrenched in poverty (African Americans) many of these Latino kids, their parents, and those who stand to benefit from their success, grab at the illusive magic of the boxing ring.

BORN AND BREDhas a special force for two audiences: For those who love boxing it’s a celebration of the demands and discipline of the most individual and demanding sport. And those who know nothing about boxing will never again watch an A-List bout on HBO, without knowing the heavy traffic and the high tolls paid on the long road to get there.

BORN AND BRED(94 min.) Not rated. Opens August 19 at LA’s Downtown Independent, 251 S. Main Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012 and NY’s QUAD Cinema, 34 West 13th Street, New York, New York 10011 p: 212-255-2243 f: 212-255-2247

Anderson Too Slick for Guereca

Posted on | August 8, 2011 | No Comments

On the undercard of Friday’s “Clash at the Chumash” event at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California, welterweight prospect “Slick” Michael Anderson moved his record to 11-0-1, 9 KOs by making quick work of journeyman Bernardo Guereca via KO 1 (2:19).

From East Orange, New Jersey, 30-year-old Anderson is a natural to the sport. Despite having just 13 unpaid fights, he was New Jersey State amateur champion before turning professional in late 2007.

With blazing-fast hands and feet and a penchant for digging to the body, Anderson’s style is reminiscent of his fistic idol, “Sugar” Shane Mosley.

“If you didn’t look at his amateur record you’d think he’s been fighting since he’s eight years old,” said Anderson’s promoter, Gary Shaw of Gary Shaw Productions. “The way he moves and slips punches is amazing to watch and he’s got great power for such a speedy fighter.”

Anderson had a draw in his third fight against California’s Dashon Johnson (now 13-4), but stopped Johnson in a rematch in December of last year.
