Yamaguchi expects technical battle with ‘Formiga’

Posted on | August 1, 2011 | No Comments

Lemoore, Calif. – Staying with the theme of monumental flyweight fights; Tachi Palace Fights is showcasing one of the biggest international 125-pound tilts to ever be fought on U.S. soil.

The World’s No. 2 ranked Mamoru Yamaguchi (26-5-3) is riding a six fight win streak and his last loss is to former World No. 1 ranked Schinichi Kojima. The Japanese mixed martial artist will put it all on the line against another former No. 1 ranked fighter, Brazilian Jussier da Silva, who was the last fighter to beat Kojima.

Da Silva (9-1) is ranked No. 4 after suffering the first loss of his career in February at the hands of No. 3 ranked Ian McCall (9-2), who was making his first appearance at 125 pounds and is now challenging No. 6 ranked Darrell Montague (9-1) for the TPF flyweight title.

“It’s definitely a division that we are proud of and I think the proof is in the pudding, especially with Dana White and the UFC now saying they’ll be adding that weight class soon,” said Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino Entertainment Coordinator Jeremy Luchau. “I think we have the best flyweights in the world hands down and I do think you will be seeing them fighting at Tachi very much longer.”

The Yamaguchi and da Silva matchup is another one of the classic striker vs. grappler matchups.

Yamaguchi is widely regarded as one of the most exciting strikers regardless of class and has 10 knockouts to his credit.

“To me it is a privilege to fight him,” da Silva said of Yamaguchi. “He’s a legend and I was dreaming about this fight for a long time. But when we get to the cage it will all be professional. The one who’s prepared best will win and I hope it’s me.

“We matchup up pretty well. He’s a kick boxer, moves well and I’m a guy that knows how to strike, but my specialty is jiu-jitsu and takedowns. I think I have the perfect game to fight him and we’ll see on August 5th ho it turns out.”

In da Silva’s last appearance at Tachi, he was out-struck by McCall in rounds two and three en route to a decision loss.

“I have a feeling that Brazilian fighters are all hungry for an opportunity, which makes them physically and mentally strong. I can see it through his fights as well. I would like to face him with greater determination,” Yamaguchi said of da Silva. “My fighting style is to fight technical. From my understanding, Jussier is a very technical fighter as well. Please expect a technical, but yet exciting fight from us.”

The winner of the pivotal bout will certainly put themselves in the driver’s seat to get a shot at the winner of the Montague/McCall bout, but neither fighter is looking past August 5th.

“I want to beat Mamoru. I have to think about it one step at a time. If I win, I want to fight for the title and become a Tachi champion and hopefully avenging my lone loss,” da Silva said.

“Tachi Palace’s flyweight division is definitely one of the top in the world. I am proud to be able to compete in such a division,” Yamaguchi said.

Tachi Palace Fights will stream live and free on Sherdog.com at 5:30 p.m. (PST).

The stream will be blacked out to fans within 100 mile radius of the Palace unless there is a sellout.

Tickets can be purchased at www.tachipalace.com or charge by phone at 1-800-225-2277. Tickets may also be purchased at the Tachi Palace Gift Shop and start at a low price of just $30 for general admission seating.

In the co-main event, Porterville, Calif.’s Joe Soto (9-1) makes his return to Tachi after suffering his first career loss and is returning from several eye surgeries. Soto will take on San Diego, Calif.’s Eddie Yagin (13-4-1).

In a middleweight special attraction former WEC Light Heavyweight World Champion Doug Marshall (12-4) makes his return to the cage against Irvine, Calif.’s Giva Santana (15-1).

Also in action;

-Las Vegas, Nev. welterweight Jorge Lopez (9-1) vs. Sacramento, Calif.’ David Marshall (8-2).

-Las Vegas, Nev. bantamweight Ulysses Gomez (7-2) vs. Soledad, Calif.’s Drew Bittner (4-0).

-Merced, Calif. welterweight Phil Collins (10-6) vs. Exeter, Calif.’s Kenny Ento (11-6).

-Fresno, Calif. featherweight Art Arciniega (10-4) vs. Santa Rosa, Calif.’s Andy Miranda (5-1).

-Oakdale, Calif. featherweight Brad McDonald (6-1) vs. Lemoore, Calif.’s Sergio Quinones (6-7).

The flyweight fight that wasn’t supposed to happen

Posted on | August 1, 2011 | No Comments

Lemoore, Calif. – From a fight that was supposed to happen in May to a fight that some thought might never happen; all eyes this August 5th will be squarely on Darrell Montague and Ian McCall.

McCall earned the right to face McCall for the Tachi Palace Fights strap in February when McCall knocked off the World’s Top Flyweight Jussier da Silva.

Later that same night, Montague defeated Ulysses Gomez for the title.

Immediately it was rumored the pair would meet in May.

“That’s the fight we wanted to make,” said Tachi Palace Fights matchmaker Richard Goodman. “It would have been the main event and the best flyweight fight to date.”

Unfortunately Montague was injured and could not compete and then it was unsure if McCall would continue at Tachi Palace Fights, as he was rumored to be a shoe in for “The Ultimate Fighter” TV show on Spike TV.

“I really didn’t even have to tryout, but I did it anyways with some friends. It was fun, my mom bought me the ticket to New Jersey so I had to go,” said McCall (10-2). “I did well at the tryouts, I hit a flying triangle and it was a really good time.

“After that I flew to Las Vegas and did the interviews and we knew we would be fighting to get into the house a few weeks after the May fight with Ortiz.”

But the Southern California fighter, who is now known to the world as “Uncle Creepy”, did something no one expected not even his manager Jason House.

“Right after the fights, Jason came up and said ‘he is yours’. I didn’t even know who he was referring to at first,” said Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino Entertainment Coordinator Jeremy Luchau. “Jason said Ian wanted to talk to me. I walked over to the fighter locker rooms and Ian walked out, gave me a hug and said I want to stay with Tachi and make a name for myself at flyweight.”

McCall has been in the spotlight before, though, going 1-2 in World Extreme Cagefighting. Even in his last defeat to now UFC Bantamweight king Dominic Cruz, McCall was impressive.

“This by no means was a snub to the UFC. I think that Ian just knew that the 25s were coming to the UFC and he wanted to take a different path to the big show,” Luchau said. “He knows that Tachi has a pretty solid track record of getting guys to the UFC and that he could do it at flyweight rather than go back up to bantamweight. I still think it was a bold move, though.”

The match was made that night – McCall vs. Montague would finally happen on August 5.

“I want to be the best flyweight in the world. I spoke to my coaches and team and we all thought this was the best way to get there. We felt that the UFC would bring the flyweights soon and I saw the guys at tryouts and they were huge at 135,” McCall said. “I didn’t want to get laid and prayed on national television. That wouldn’t be any good for me or for the UFC. They want exciting fights and I’m an exciting guy at 125. Tachi takes really good care of me, so we decided to stay.”

Forgotten about in the storylines leading up to what surely will be one of the more pivotal showdowns in the division’s young history is the champion Montague (9-1).

The Chino, California fighter has won six straight bouts, including notables like Gomez and Luis Gonzales.

“He’s a good wrestler and real aggressive,” Montague said of McCall. “He is coming and trying to take my belt. I have a lot of respect for him, but I think this is a good matchup for me.”

The hype did start to build first on MMA.tv’s “Underground” forum and also on Facebook, but has since slowed as the fighters now ready for the tilt.

“He is just a weird guy,” Montague said. “Ian is going to pressure me during the fight, though. I will counter with my jab, I have the reach and I will outbox him on the feet and counter him. I just see him trying to pressure and push the action and running into my shots.”

The 9-bout fight card features four of the top six flyweights in the world. McCall is ranked No. 3 and Montague No. 6.

In another pivotal flyweight bout World No. 2 ranked Mamoru Yamaguchi (26-5-3) faces No. 4 Jussier da Silva (9-1). Brazil’s da Silva will be back in action for the first time since suffering his first loss and losing his top ranking. Meanwhile, Japan’s Yamaguchi will be making his second consecutive appearances for TPF.

McCall expects a tough fight with Montague, but none-the-less is prepared.

“He is a tough kid, has some good kick boxing and good defense. We didn’t really get to see Ulysses shoot too much on him, so I really don’t know what his wrestling defense or his jiu-jitsu is like.

“I think he might be a little better striker, especially with the reach, but I think I hit a lot harder. I feel like I am the quicker fighter and I know I’m a better wrestler. Our jiu-jitsu might be about equal, but I definitely have the better ground and pound. I think it’s going to be an exciting fight.

Also in action;

-Las Vegas, Nev. welterweight Jorge Lopez (9-1) vs. Sacramento, Calif.’ David Marshall (8-2).

-Fresno, Calif. featherweight Art Arciniega (10-4) vs. Santa Rosa, Calif.’s Andy Miranda (5-1).

-Oakdale, Calif. featherweight Brad McDonald (6-1) vs. Lemoore, Calif.’s Sergio Quinones (6-7).

Tachi Palace Fights will stream live and free on Sherdog.com at 5:30 p.m. (PST).

The stream will be blacked out to fans within 100 mile radius of the Palace unless there is a sellout.

Is Bareknuckle Boxing the Next Big Fight Sport?

Posted on | August 1, 2011 | No Comments

It has been nearly 123 years since the last bareknuckle boxing match took place.  In 1889 bareknuckle champion John L. Sullivan defeated Jake Kilrain in an epic 75 round marathon fight.

Bareknuckle boxing paved the way for what boxing has evolved into, although nowadays it carries along a false misconception of a barbaric sport.

When people think of bareknuckle fighting, the image of a barroom brawl or a bum fight comes to mind—two untrained combatants throwing hands viciously and carelessly.  Safety and skill rarely co-exist in the world of “street fighting”.

But for this first time since 1889, this Friday will make history as former cruiserweight boxing champion Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn will go to battle with MMA fighter Chris Thompson.  The bareknuckle boxing match is a sanctioned bout consisting of 10-90 second rounds and will be fought under London Prize Ring Rules.

“Many people hear the term bareknuckle boxing and immediately think of a vicious street fight or back alley brawl,” said Gunn.  “This is a fight between two professionals with referees and doctor’s ringside.”

Gunn went on to add that bareknuckle boxing reduces the risk of injury more than traditional boxing and mixed martial arts.

“In boxing a fighter can take a lot of punishment over the course of the fight, and even MMA fighters can take a rough beating before the fight is called,” said Gunn.  “Since we don’t wear gloves, I pick my shots and use a different approach than I did when I fought with boxing gloves.   It’s not about getting in there and wailing on your opponent until he can’t stand; it’s about fighting a strategic match to win.”

Gunn is excited about having the chance to be part of something that can really take off in the world of fight sports.

“The public enjoys watching fights because they want to see two professionals who know what they’re doing stand there and throw hands,” said Gunn.  “I believe that following this first match the sport is going to take off and become huge.”

Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn has become a recognizable name in the boxing industry due to his heavy hands, relentless drive and ability to put a show on every time he stepped between the ropes.

Heavyweight world champion Tomasz Adamek had the following to say about Gunn in a blog on his website, “Our fight began a thread of friendship between us.  He, (Gunn) street killer who fought over 100 street fights bare fisted, is looking for his place in between the ropes of the ring. He promised me a rematch for a lost fight.  Oh these sparring should be interesting.   He boasts that he has yet to be put down on the floorboards by anyone and you can see love for the ring in his eyes”.

“I want to thank all of my team, Dominick Scibetta, Kyle White, Al Ross and Renato Colantoni for always supporting and standing behind me,” said Gunn.  “And also a special shout out to Joe McEwing, who I have had the pleasure of knowing for several years; I believe he is one of the smartest minds in the sports industry I’ve ever met.”

The first bareknuckle boxing match will take place Friday, August 5 in Scottsdale, Arizona.  It will be available to watch live online at www.ustream.tv.

Posted on | August 1, 2011 | No Comments

Popular Vasquez to take on Angel Rios while Ferrante battles William Prieto AT ROUND 4 on August 12th at Harrahs in Chester, PA

CHESTER, PA (August 1, 2011)—Joey Eye Boxing Promotions is proud to announce the signing of Lightweight Victor Vasquez and Light Heavyweight Tony Ferrante to exclusive promotional contracts.

The duo will be competing at ROUND 4 which will take place on Friday night August 12th at Harrah’s in Chester, PA with Vasquez participating in the eight round main event and Ferrante seeing action in the six round co-feature.

“I am very happy to have Victor and Tony be the first two signees to the company”, said promoter Joey “Eye” Intrieri

“When my partner David Feldman and I started the series at Harrahs we envisioned fan friendly fights that involved the most popular local fighters.  Victor and Tony have the two biggest fan bases in the city.  Combine that with the way they fight, fans go home knowing that got their monies worth every time they fight so for us it was a natural for all of us to come together on this agreement”

“David and myself look forward to talking to more of the great talent in the area to continue to build the brand that we have started at Harrah’s over the first three shows and August 12 will just be the next memorable night “

Vasquez of Philadelphia has built up one of the biggest fan bases in Philadelphia due to his exciting style which always has him in the fight of the night whenever he steps into the ring.

Vasquez twenty-eight years old has a record of 13-5-1 with seven knockouts and has been in some memorable fights in his young career.

In his last bout, Vasquez was impressive in disposing of Gustavo Dailey (4-11) in round four to headline ROUND 3 at Harrahs in Chester on June 3rd.

Vasquez waged a terrific back and forth war with Osnel Charles before dropping a six round majority decision as part as ROUND 1 at Harrah’s in Chester.

He holds victories over undefeated Thomas McCuiston (1-0); Tyric Robinson (9-4-1) as well as an exciting six round split decision over Bryne Green (5-3) on October 8th in Philadelphia.

Vazquez will take on Angel Rios in the eight round main event.

Rios of the Bronx, New York has an impressive mark of 9-5 with six knockouts is coming off a six round unanimous decision defeat to Stephen Owusu on July 7th in The Bronx.  That was his first fight after an eight year layoff.

He turned pro 1999 and has been in the ring with former world champions Nate Campbell and Mike Anchondo.

“I am very happy that someone will look out for me and keep me busy”, said Vasquez.

“I trust Joey Eye and its Good to be with someone who I grew up in the business with”

Ferrante, 27 years old, has a record of 11-2 with six knockouts, won his first nine bouts which included wins over Anthony Pietrantonio (6-1) and he won the WBF United States title with a eight round majority decision over Billy Bailey.

Ferrante lost that title when he dropped a ten round unanimous decision to Chuck Mussachio (15-1-2).

Ferrante will be looking to make it three in a row after disposing of Joe Park as part of ROUND 3 at Harrah’s in Chester in the fourth round on June 3rd.

In his last bout, Ferrante stopped grizzled veteran Andre Hemphill in seven rounds on July 15th.

Ferrante will take on William Prieto of Lorain, Ohio in a six round bout.

Prieto has a record of 5-5-1 with two knockouts which is impressive considering the top opposition he has fought.

He has been in the ring with six undefeated fights plus other fighters with gaudy records.

He holds wins over then undefeated Jesse Blount (2-0); Nate Adams (2-0) and Eric Jarvis (2-0).

He has also been in the ring with world ranked Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (5-0); Durrell Richardson (8-0); Issac Rodrigues (9-0).

He is looking to get back in the win column after dropping his last two to Aaron Pryor Jr. (11-1) and his last bout to Harry Coyle (13-2) on April 9th.
