Flores Moves to No. 1 in National Rankings at Heavyweight

Posted on | November 30, 2011 | 1 Comment

Senior Ryan Flores has jumped one spot and now sits as the No. 1 nationally-ranked wrestler at 285 lbs in the InterMat poll. This is the first time Flores, the national runner-up and an All-American a season ago, has topped the rankings in his career.

Flores began his season impressively last week, starting with an 11-2 major decision over then-No. 6 Spencer Myers of Maryland in the NWCA All-Star Classic in Tempe, Ariz. on Monday. Flores then competed on Saturday in the Northeast Duals, where he earned falls in each of his three bouts. One of his falls came against a ranked wrestler, No. 16 Peter Sturgeon of Central Michigan, which occurred at the 3:49 mark. His quickest fall of the day was against Penn’s Anthony DiLonardo in 47 seconds.

In his second season at American, the Clovis, Calif., native has now recorded a 29-6 record with 13 falls, three major decisions, and two tech falls. Dating back to last season, he has now won 14 of his last 15 bouts.

For his performance last week, Flores has also been named the AU Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO.

WBF Twin-Bill In Atlanta

Posted on | November 30, 2011 | No Comments

On December 2 at the Georgia World Congress Center´s Thomas Murphy Ballroom in Atlanta, Sports Fan Properties, Shea Bailey Promotions and Delgado Boxing Promotions will present two World Boxing Federation (WBF) North American title fights on a card billed as “The Big Rock Out.”

Former World-title-challenger Paul “The Truth” Delgado will take on experienced former Indiana State champion Ruben Galvan for the welterweight version, and Tyrese Hendrix clash with Chris Gray for the Light Welterweight championship.

Only nine months ago Atlanta-native Delgado, 25-11-1 (4), travelled to Slovenia to fight IBF World Champion Jan Zaveck, but returned without the title. He is now starting a new campaign for a second crack at a world crown, and he hopes that beating Galvan for the WBF North American belt will be a nice first step.

A true veteran of the game, Ruben “The Modern Day Warrior” Galvan, 27-19-4 (10), has fought some of the sport’s biggest names. From Jorge Paez to Paul Spadafora, and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to Zab Judah, Galvan has shared a ring with them, and as late as this October he proved his durability by going the distance with highly touted undefeated contender Vernon Paris.

“I have been following Galvan over the past few years and I think we will match up well”, said Delgado. “He’s been in the ring with some talented boxers, but our plan is to take him out into the deep waters and see if he’ll be able to survive.”

In the evenings co-main event Tyrese Hendrix, 20-3-1 (9), from nearby Gainesville, will not get an easy night against tough trialhorse Chris Gray, 13-16-1 (1), another visiting fighter who has seen it all and been in with some very prominent names. Gray actually hold wins over highly ranked Carson Jones, and then undefeated prospect Brian Mihtar.

Earlier this year Gray went the distance with Olympic Silver medalist Ricardo Williams Jr, and Hendrix knows he cant take the man from Baton Rouge lightly:

“Gray will be very tough and will be coming to fight. He is known for his chin and we are going to find out just how good it is”, said Hendrix.

The show will be completed by no less than ten well-matched undercard fights, and the promoters are expecting a big turn-out for what will be one of the biggest promotions in Atlanta history.

ABNER MARES, JOSEPH AGBEKO, ANSELMO MORENO & VIC DARCHINYAN WORKOUT QUOTES

Posted on | November 30, 2011 | No Comments

Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Westside Boxing Club in Los Angeles, Calif.

LOS ANGELES (Nov. 29, 2011) – With just four days until their respective world championship showdowns on Saturday, Dec. 3, live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from Honda Center in AnaheimCalif., all four fighters preparing for the World Championship Doubleheader participated in an open media workout at Westside Boxing Club in Los Angeles, Calif.

In the main event, unbeaten rising star Abner Mares (22-0-1, 13 KO’s), of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif., will defend his International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Bantamweight Championship titles against the boxer he dethroned, former Two-Time IBF Bantamweight World Champion Joseph King Kong Agbeko (28-3, 22 KO’s), of Accra, Ghana.

In the co-featured world championship bout, Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno (31-1-1, 11 KO’s), of Panama City, Panama, will defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) Bantamweight Super Championship against Two-Division World Champion Vic “The Raging Bull’’ Darchinyan (37-3-1, 27 KO’s), of Sydney, Australia, by way of Vanadzor, Armenia.

The doubleheader is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, Don King Productions and Gary Shaw Productions and sponsored by Corona, DeWalt Tools and AT&T.

Tickets for Mares vs. Agbeko II, priced at $150, $100, $50 and $25, are available for purchase at all Ticketmaster locations, online at ticketmaster.com, via charge-by-phone at 800-745-3000 and at the Honda Center Box Office.

Here’s what the fighters had to say on Tuesday:

ABNER MARES:

“I’m really looking forward to facing him again.  It took a lot away from the championship.  Now I just want to go in the ring and perform, beat him again and fight a good fight.

“My last three or four opponents have been champions or world champions, so I think everyone knows what I’m capable of.

“I could have taken some time off or fought someone else.  I hope to win the right way so people will give me the credit I deserve.

“It’s a world championship fight and it’s a great night for the fans.  If it goes 12 rounds, let’s make it 12 interesting rounds.

“I need to maintain my distance and not fight his fight.

“The knockout comes by itself.  We definitely want to throw a lot of punches and aim for his head, but I just want to perform.  If the knockout comes, it’s comes.

“I’m excited to be fighting back in California.  Anaheim has great boxing fans.

“When two warriors face each other all you can expect is a good fight.

“I want to go in there and make a statement in the first two rounds.  He’s a good fighter and he never gave up in the last fight, so I think the first few rounds will be key.

“I just want to go in there and capitalize and move on.  He’s a great champion and it should be a great fight.  I need to fight smart, box and move onto other fighters.

“He’s a well-schooled fighter and he maintained and got back in the fight like a world champion will, but I’m ready to show a different Abner in this fight.

“If you don’t risk, you’re not going to win.”

JOSEPH AGBEKO:

“Boxing is always different.  What happens in one fight doesn’t always happen again.  I’m going in as warrior and I’m ready for war.

“My job is to go in and fight and come out as the winning fighter.  I want to get the belt back.

“At the press conference, Mares said he wants a knockout.  If he said he wants a knockout, then I’m going to knock him out.

“There will be a lot of changes in the ring this time, but the whole world will see the best Joseph Agbeko.

“In the last fight there were some fouls and this time the ref will be watching and doing the right thing.

“He knows how to throw a punch in the right place and I think he will on Saturday.

“I think about what happened every night and I’m looking forward to getting back in the ring.

“The key is for me to prove that I’m better than him.

“Mares is a good fighter, but I need to prove that I am the better fighter.  I am physically ready to do that.

“I deserved a rematch and I’m glad they gave me one right away.

“I didn’t retaliate against him because I had to be professional and I have to obey the rules of the sport.”

ANSELMO MORENO:

“I’m going to fight him the way he’ll fight me.  I’m not going to hesitate.

“This is my first fight in the U.S. and I’m ready to get in the ring and show my skills.  I’m not nervous about my first fight in theU.S., I just want to show why I’m the world champion.

“Darchinyan has his own style and he’s been a champion, too.  I think it will be a style fight and, if we do it properly, it will be one hell of a fight.

“You’re going to see a hell of a fight from me and I will defend my title [successfully].

“Vic has a different style, but I have a very rare style as well.  I’m looking to connect on all my punches, but it’s not as easy as people think.

“If everything comes out good on Saturday night and I win, I want to fight the winner of Mares and Agbeko.

“My ability and my intelligence has to be the difference in the fight.”

VIC DARCHINYAN:

“I’m looking for a smart fight, but for sure I’ll knock him out.

“I’ve fought southpaws and taller guys in the past and I didn’t have problems with them.  I think it will be a good fight but I won’t have any problems with him.

“I’m looking for bigger fights – I’m looking to move up to 122 (pounds) to fight the bigger guys after I beat him.

“I love southpaws – he fits my style.  I’ll go to the body and the head and destroy him slowly before the knockout.  But I will knock him out, 100 percent.

“I’m an exciting fighter.  I’ll go after him and knock him out.

“I want to go higher and higher.  I think this will be my last fight at 118.  I just want to fight the best and fight for titles.”

“Mares vs. Agbeko II” is a 12-round bout for Mares’ IBF and WBC Silver Bantamweight Championships which will take place Saturday, Dec. 3 at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.  In the co-featured world championship bout, Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno will defend his WBA Bantamweight Super World Championship against former two-division World Champion Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan.  The doubleheader is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, Don King Productions and Gary Shaw Productions and sponsored by Corona, DeWalt Tools and AT&T.  The doubleheader will be televised live onSHOWTIME® beginning at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Tickets for Mares vs. Agbeko II, priced at $150, $100, $50 and $25, are available for purchase at all Ticketmaster locations, online at ticketmaster.com, via charge-by-phone at 800-745-3000 and at the Honda Center Box Office.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (November 29, 2011) – Judges Dave Moretti, Sandy Pino and Lisa Giampa, as well as referee Rocky Burke, have been assigned to work Friday night’s “World Dominance” showdown between nine-time world boxing champion Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm (30-1-3, 9 KOs) and six-time world titlist Anne Sophie Mathis (25-1, 21 KOs).

“World Dominance,” presented by Fresquez Productions, will be held Friday night, Dec. 2 at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Holm-Mathis 10-round bout will be contested for the IBA Welterweight title and WBAN Championship Belt, as well as the mythical No. 1 pound-for-pound world champion today in women’s boxing.

One of the most recognizable judges in boxing today, Moretti (Nevada) has been officiating 34 years and worked 131 world title fights. Pino (New Mexico), a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Boxing official, has more than 40 years judging experience. Giampa, who has been a judge with the Nevada State Athletic Commission since 2001, is certified by the Association of Boxing Commissions (“ABC”), and has attended judges’ seminars around the world.

Burke (New Mexico) has refereed nearly 200 bouts since 1997, including 11 women’s and eight men’s world championships. Rocky was an amateur boxer who reached the 1976 U.S. Olympic Trials, losing to future world champion Bruce Curry.

A three-division champion as a light welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight, the 30-year-old Holm sports a superlative 20-0-1 (6 KOs) record in world title fights, in addition to having an incredible 14-0-1 mark against world champions. Her victims during the past decade include notables such as Christy Martin, Mary Jo Sanders, Mia St. John, Jane Couch, Duda Yankovich and Chevelle Hallback (twice). Holly is riding a 24-fight unbeaten streak, dating back to her only pro loss in 2004, when a serious cut under her eye prevented her from continuing to fight.

The reigning the WIBA, WIBF and WBF World Welterweight Champion, French invader Mathis has won 24 consecutive bouts, dating back 16 years to her only pro loss in her second fight, including fights against world champions Myriam Lamare, Couch, Yankovich, Ana Pascal and Nathalie Toro.

Doors open at 5 PM/MT, first bout scheduled for 7 PM/MT. For more information about “World Dominance: Holm vs. Mathis” go on line to www.FresquezProductions.com.
