Maromo eagerly awaits making more MFC history

Posted on | November 14, 2011 | No Comments

‘African Assassin’ fired up for stand-up war with Lynn at Bitter Rivals

By MFC Staff

Mukai Maromo has already had a taste of making history in the Maximum Fighting Championship.

That bit came from taking a significant role on the MFC 31: The Rundown card that recently made its highly anticipated debut on TSN2. But Maromo, ever the stylish showman, is eager to be a part of more history-making ventures, and he’ll get his chance at MFC 32: Bitter Rivals.

When Maromo (6-2) takes on Adam Lynn (17-8) at MFC 32, it will mark the first time in MFC’s 11-year run that winners of back-to-back Knockout of the Night awards will meet in a follow-up clash. Maromo took the honor at MFC 30 when he clubbed down Scott Cleve in only 36 seconds. At MFC 31, Lynn accepted the award by way of his lights-out elbow to the jaw of Curtis Demarce only 1:38 into their bout.

Maromo, who will ride a three-fight winning streak into the battle with Lynn, is thrilled to have a prominent spot in MFC history and he’s hoping to take full advantage of the opportunity.

“I’m very glad to be a part of such an exciting piece of MFC history for sure,” said Maromo, who will square off against Lynn in key contest on the Bitter Rivals card emanating live on HDNet Fights from the Mayfield Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, on Friday, January 27 (check local listings for channel designation).

“It’s going to make for an exciting night for everybody having that much knockout power in the ring at the same time. I see it being a very exciting stand-up battle and I think everyone should expect another dynamite performance on my part for sure.”

Maromo knows he’s in for a big test against Lynn, the former U.S. Marine who boasts a current six-fight winning streak, but “The African Assassin” feels his game has reached the level where he can stand toe-to-toe with one of the fiercest foes in the MFC’s stacked lightweight division.

“I’m very excited about fighting Lynn. It’s a welcomed upgrade in the calibre of competition,” noted Maromo.

“Lynn looked very good against Curtis (Demarce), and showed he had an air-tight boxing game on his resume. But that’s where I like to play so if he does decide to keep it standing, then it’s going to be fireworks all night, baby!”

Fireworks was certainly what Maromo flashed in his second MFC fight, a spectacular showcase of his proven Muay Thai skills in an electrifying decision win over Sabah Fadai. While Maromo’s physical talents were dazzlingly displayed, there was a new air of confidence about Maromo that grew in force as he steadily began to dominate Fadai.

Maromo will need every bit of confidence in his game plan as he faces the tough-as-nails Lynn.

“Before I was a little more tentative with my Muay Thai because my ground game was not where I needed it to be, but now it’s exactly where I need it to be,” said Maromo. “And if you thought that last fight was a good one wait till you see this one!”

A win over Lynn is the next step in Maromo reaching his long- and short-term goals.

“I’m obviously in this to try and be the best at it so each fight serves as a measuring stick for how much I have improved,” he explained. “So with that in mind the majority of my focus is on the fight at hand, but as far as my standing in the MFC lightweight ranks goes, I think I just made a big splash, but also have a way to go before I reach the top of that ladder.”

Tickets for MFC 32: Bitter Rivals are going fast and are available exclusively through the MFC Ticket Hotline at (780) 504-2024.

Bright Future Ahead for Boxing’s Newest Star

WBA Junior Middleweight Champion Austin Trout Heading for
High-Profile Showdowns

Austin TroutThe future is looking extremely bright for WBA Junior Middleweight Champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout (24-0, 14 KO’s) after the virtuoso performance he turned in against Australian challenger Frank LoPorto on Friday night at Cohen Stadium in El Paso, Texas.

Making the second defense of his title and his national television debut, Trout was masterful in logging a dominant TKO victory at 2:32 of the sixth round. Showing off his elite-level power, speed, timing, and fluid movement, Trout was barely touched while delivering a savage beating to his #14-ranked opponent.

It was the type of showing that gets the boxing world’s attention.

“I couldn’t be more proud,” said his elated promoter, Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions. “Austin was sensational. He set out to make a statement and he made it emphatically. He is now regarded as an elite-level fighter in a very talent-deep division.”

Cohen says that Trout now has two options for his next fight and both are lucrative, important fights.

“Miguel Cotto is the super champion of the WBA Junior Middleweight division. He won his title in June 2010 against Yuri Foreman. When you’re the super champion of the WBA, the rules state you need to defend against your mandatory every 18 months, so the winner of the upcoming fight between Cotto and Antonio Margarito must make their mandatory title defense against Austin Trout. We want to make that fight against either guy as soon as possible.”

If, however, the winner of the December 3 rematch between Cotto and Margarito declines to face Trout in his first defense, the other option would be a defense against Australia’s colorful Anthony “The Man” Mundine.

“If they choose not to fight us and vacate the belt, then we’ll be the only ones with a rightful claim to be WBA champion. In that case, we’ll make our mandatory against Mundine in a fight that would have not only all the new fans Austin made over the weekend, but the entire continent of Australia also buzzing the day it was made. Either way, it’s a win for my fighter. He’s finally going to get the kind of fight he’s dreamed of getting and all the recognition that will also come when he wins. He went from something of a secret in boxing to one of the hottest fighters in the sport with that one terrific performance.”

After that, Cohen says the Austin Trout hit list will have some recognizable names on it. “After Cotto or Mundine, it’s on to (WBC Light Middleweight Champion) Canelo Alvarez, James Kirkland, Alfredo Angulo; we’re going to clean out the 154-lb division before we’re done. The future is very, very bright for Austin Trout.”

Holly Holm vs. Anne Sophie Mathis Major boost for Women’s Boxing

World Dominance,’ Dec. 2 at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque

Fresquez logoALBUQUERQUE, NM (November 14, 2011) – The ultimate confrontation – “World Dominance” – on December 2 between the top two women boxers in the world, American favorite Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm (30-1-3, 9 KOs) and French knockout specialist Anne Sophie Mathis(25-1, 21 KOs), promises to give women’s boxing a much needed boost in worldwide popularity.

“World Dominance,” presented by Fresquez Productions, will be held Friday night, Dec. 2 at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Holm-Mathis 10-round bout will be for the IBA Welterweight title and WBAN Championship Belt, as well as to determine the mythical No. 1 pound-for-pound world championship in women’s boxing.

“I agree that Holly and Sophie Ann are the two best women boxers in the world,” Holm’s head trainer Mike Winkeljohn said. “Holly’s beaten everybody here. She’s at the top of her game with nowhere to go (in the U.S.) Holly has a tremendous fan-base in Albuquerque. She makes so much more fighting there due to her fan-base, so there’s no reason for her to fight anywhere else. She’s always been willing to fight anybody. . Now, two continents are coming together. We’re both excited about this new challenge (Mathis) and she will be up for that challenge. ”

Holm is a nine-time world champion in three different divisions (light welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight) and the 29-year-old boxer has an amazing 20-0-1 (6 KOs) record in world title fights, in addition to sporting a 14-0-1 mark versus world champions. She has fought and beaten virtually all of the notable names of the past decade in women’s boxing, from 135 through 154-pound classes, including Christy Martin, Mary Jo Sanders, Mia St. John, Jane Couch, Duda Yankovich and Chevelle Hallback (twice). Holly is riding a 24-fight unbeaten streak, dating back to her only pro loss in 2004, when a serious cut under her eye prevented her from continuing to fight.

“Holly can box or do MMA equally well,” noted Winkeljohn, who trains Holm in both combat sports. “Women’s boxing isn’t on television in the U.S and, for sponsorships, she’s turned to MMA. Holly is the best boxer in the world and, MMA-wise, in a year she will be the best in women’s MMA, too.

“What separates her from others are her intelligence and drive. She works very hard and is a student of the game. Holly can change game plans on the spot. She always wants to do more in training than she did in the last camp. Sometimes, I have to make her stop.”

Six-time world titlist Mathis is the reigning the WIBA, WIBF and WBF World Welterweight Champion. She has won 24 consecutive bouts, dating back 16 years to her only pro loss in her second pro fight. Her Dec. 2nd showdown against Holm will mark the fifth anniversary of Ann Sophie’s first world title win, in which she stopped previously unbeaten Myriam Lamare (13-0) for the WBA crown and vacant EBU championship. Mathis’ victims also include world champions Couch, Yankovich, Ana Pascal and Nathalie Toro.

“Mathis is an anomaly because of her length and size,” Winkeljohn concluded. “She’s caused fits for opponents trying to close the gap because of her long arms. She hits hard, too. We don’t want to be on the end of her punches.”

Bucknell’s Wirnsberger: Team Has Bright Future, Talks to Takedown Wrestling

Posted on | November 14, 2011 | No Comments

LEWISBURG – Dan Wirnsberger was surprisingly upbeat following Bucknell’s season-opening 28-9 loss to Nebraska on Thursday night.

That final score pasted on scoreboards throughout Sojka Pavilion wasn’t exactly something to smile about, but what he saw from as young a team as he’s had since his first year in Lewisburg was. He saw a lineup filled with eight wrestlers that were either freshmen or sophomores not back away from a Nebraska team competing for the first time as a member of the Big Ten.

Bucknell won three of the first five bouts last night, and had a better-than-good opportunity to win five of the first seven.

“I was extremely pleased with the overall effort,” Wirnsberger said. “There’s one or two weight classes I have some concern with, and hopefully we get those fixed. But the overall effort, for this being our first match with a young lineup, you never know what to expect.”

What the Bison got was a brilliant performance from true freshman Austin Miller to start the night at 125 pounds. The Hempfield product – who two years ago was responsible for the only loss of then Line Mountain wrestler Zain Retherford in his state championship season – battled from behind after Nebraska’s Shawn Nagel funked out of a takedown attempt and scored a takedown of his own.

But there was never any panic from Miller. Instead, he pounded on Nagel, eventually wearing out the Cornhusker. Miller took the lead with a late first-period takedown and increased the lead to 4-2 with an escape midway through the second period. And despite just the two-point lead, it never seemed like Miller was in danger, eventually winning, 4-2.

“We’re extremely excited about Austin Miller,” Wirnsberger said. “He’s a superstar in the making for our program. It’s all about effort for him and determination. It’s all about wrestling for him.”

“We’re going to rely on him,” Bucknell co-captain John Regan said. “This is the first time I’ve seen him tired this year. The kid can go 40 minutes straight of live wrestling. We’re expecting great things from him and not just in close matches with good kids. He’s going to turn heads.”

But that’s the way Regan feels about this entire Bucknell team, not just Miller. This Bison team doesn’t feature a returning All-American like Andy Rendos or Kevin LeValley of the past three years and it’s a team that not much is expected of. And not to mention, the Bison are without Corey Lear who is sitting out the first semester and will join the team in December. The team is also without Joe McMullen who has a knee injury.

Even beyond what Regan – who picked up a 6-1 win at 157 pounds last night – saw from Miller, the senior was even more excited about the overall direction of the program. He saw it even in a 2-0 loss by freshman Shawn Armato at 133 pounds. He saw it in sophomore Stephen McPeek being just a late takedown away from a win at 174. And he saw it in freshman heavyweight Joe Stolfi coming up just a takedown short of beating No. 8-ranked Tucker Lane.

And it was results like that that had Wirnsberger walking out of Sojka Pavilion pleased last night. And it was a sentiment his senior co-captain shared.

“A lot of them just don’t have college experience,” Regan said. “But we’re looking for upsets because none of us are on the radar right now.”

“This is a good measuring stick and a good gauge on what we need to do to improve,” Wirnsberger said. “I like our overall team effort. I’m not worried about wins and losses, I’m worried about effort. Wins and losses will take care of themselves.”

Regan did his part to show the way for the Bison last night with his 6-1 win over Green, who was a blue-chip prospect coming out of high school in New Jersey a year ago. Regan had a 3-1 lead in the second period and scored a huge takedown with a double leg shot for a 5-1 lead.

From there he broke Green by riding hard on top. Green couldn’t escape in his two minutes on the bottom in the third period.

125: Austin Miller, Bucknell, dec. Shawn Nagel, 4-3. 133: No. 17 Ridge Kiley, Nebraska, dec. Shawn Armato, 2-0. 141: Jake Sueflohn, Nebraska, pinned Alex Pellicciotti, 4:35. 149: Derrik Russell, Bucknell, dec. Brandon Wilbourn, 4-3. 157: John Regan, Bucknell, dec. James Green, 6-1. 165: Robert Kokesh, Nebraska, pinned Ray Schlitt, 2:01. 174: Tyler Koehn, Nebraska, dec. Stephen McPeek, 7-6. 184: No. 10 Josh Ihnen, Nebraska, dec. Jamie Westwood, 9-3. 197: James Nakashima, Nebraska, maj. dec. Tyler Lyster, 19-7. 285: No. 8 Tucker Lane, Nebraska, dec. Joe Stolfi, 5-2.

Big Fight Preview: Return Of The Mac – Enzo Maccarinelli Vs. Gyorgy Marosi

Posted on | November 14, 2011 | No Comments

By Gianluca (Rio) Di Caro

Francis and George Warren may be new to the boxing promotions business, but no one can deny they have hit the ground running. Their first show produced a ‘Fight of the Year’ front runner, when Liam Walsh successfully defended his Commonwealth title in a proper barnstorming battle royale with Paul Appleby. Their second event see new star signing, Cruiserweight Leon ‘Solid’ Williams, wrestle the Lonsdale belt from long time Champ Rob Norton’s iron grip.

For their third event, at York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday 18th November, and live on BoxNation (Sky platform channel 456) Francis and George have another major battle headlining, as former WBU and WBO Cruiserweight World Champion Enzo Maccarinelli makes his welcome return to the ring… as a Light Heavyweight.

Big Mac’s opponent on Friday will be unbeaten Gyorgy Marosi. This will be no easy fight for Maccarinelli, as Marosi is a tough battler who has stopped eight of his twelve opponents and is the reigning Hungarian Super Middleweight Champion.

Whilst I do not know too much about Marosi’s fights, well all the reports are in Hungarian and whilst I do speak various languages Hungarian is not one of them. Saying that I have had a good look at his record though.

The first thing that struck me was this guy is a fast starting big hitter – having stopped six opponents in two rounds or less, one in the third and one in the fifth. His biggest scalp to date is Arnold Turos, who was 14-1 with six KO’s when he faced Marosi, who stopped him in the first round.

Now Maccarinelli is another thing altogether, how could I not know about his career, I’m a big fan of the Cruiserweight division and he was a two time World Champion.

As a Cruiserweight Maccarinelli overcame an early career loss, to Lee Swaby in only his fourth contest, to build up an impressive record before becoming. one of the biggest names on the World scene.

With ten excellent wins, seven within the distance, under his belt since the loss to Swaby, the Welshman challenged for the vacant WBU World title, against the seriously tough Bruce ‘Lionheart’ Scott. Maccarinelli overcome a first round knockdown to stop the durable Scott in the fourth and lift the coveted crown.

Maccarinelli successfully defended his crown seven times, with only two going the full distance. His first, against Andrei Karsten in September 2003, lasted just one minute and ten seconds. His second victim, sorry opponent, Earl Morais fared just a little better, having lasted until the one minute thirty second mark before being knocked out.

In February 2004 Garry Delaney visited the canvas no less than seven times before referee Dave Parris decided to call a halt to the proceedings after two minutes and thirty seven seconds of the eighth round.

Five months later Ismail Abdoul achieved something no one else had during Maccarinelli’s reign to that point, he went the distance. Saying that he was totally outclassed by the Swansea man, who had out pointed the Belgium by a 120-108 and 119-109 (twice) margin.

Two further stoppage finishes followed, a third round knockout of Jesper Kristiansen in September 2004 and a fourth round stoppage of America’s Rich LaMontagne in January 2005.

For his final defense, of the WBU title, Maccarinelli faced and beat former British, Commonwealth and WBU World Champion Mark Hobson in a thrilling encounter at the M.E.N. in Manchester in March 2006.

In his next bout Maccarinelli challenged Marcelo Fabian Dominguez for the interim WBO title. In yet another thriller Big Mac added another stoppage finish to his record, this time a ninth round TKO finish.

Seven months after their first encounter Maccarinelli and Mark Hobson again went to war, this time for the full WBO World crown. Big Macc took no chances and dispatched Hobson after just one minute and eleven seconds of the first round.

In April 2007 American Bobby Gunn crossed the Atlantic to try his luck against Swansea’s finest, without success as Big Mac stopped him after just two minutes and thirty five seconds of the first round.

three months later another American, Wayne Braithwaite, made the trip to see if he could do what Gunn couldn’t and take the belt away from Maccarinelli. He couldn’t either although he did manage to go the distance to become the only person that did during Big Mac’s reign as WBO champ.

In November 2007 Mohamed Azzaoui made the even longer flight, from New Zealand, but got sent back home after just fifty eight seconds of the fourth round.

Then it was the big one, on the 8th March 2008 Maccarinelli and WBC/WBA World Champion David Haye locked horns in a unification Battle Royale. The fierce battle lasted just over five minutes before the almighty Haye became the unified Champ.

One non-championship bout followed before Maccarinelli was back on the Championship trail, this time against American exiled Brit Ola Afolabi for the interim WBO title. Maccarinelli’s fans could see their man easily cruising towards another title, when the unthinkable happened – Afolabi, who was way behind on points, was under big pressure and was backed up to the ropes, as Maccarinelli started to unload Afolabi let rip with a sharp right and sent Big Mac down and out.

Maccarinelli brush him self down and in his very next fight challenged Denis Lebedev for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental belt. Big Mac’s luck had run out as after just two minutes and twenty seconds of the third round referee Terry O’Connor called a halt to the proceedings to save Maccarinelli suffering another knockout.

Two further non-championship bouts followed, neither opponent were to go the distance, before Maccarinelli challenged Alexander Kotlobay for the vacant European crown. The Mac was back, having dispatched Kotlobay in just two minutes and fifteen seconds of the first round.

Unfortunately Maccranelli’s reign came to an abrupt halt, after being dropped twice heavily in the seventh round, by challenger Alexander Frenkel in September 2009.

Maccarinelli decided to switch to the Light Heavyweight division earlier this year and on Friday will make his first outing at this new weight. Word is he is stronger at the lower weight so even though Bonfire night was just over a week ago you can expect fireworks on Friday night.

Heading up the support is Tony Conquest versus Toks Owoh for the vacant Southern Area Cruiserweight title. New British Champ Leon Williams is sure to be taking a lot of interest in this fight, as it’s rumoured that the winner of this then gets to face him early in the new year.

This will be former World #3 ranked Super Middleweight Owoh’s first shot at a Cruiserweight belt.

With just two wins under his belt since moving to the division, back in March, Owoh may find his much younger opponent too much to handle. Conquest is some twelve years Owoh’s junior and is unbeaten in seven outings.

The leveler may be experience, Owoh has not only fought eighteen times more than Conquest but has also fought a Championship bout previously, having fought and lost to American Glenn Johnson for the IBF Inter-Continental Super Middleweight title.

The undercard features a plethora of local prospects, including the exciting young Lightweight prospect Billy Morgan, who is coached by the legendary Jimmy Tibbs and his son Mark at the TRAD TKO gym in Canning Town, and Graham Earl’s unbeaten protégé, Heavyweight Tom Little.

Southampton’s unbeaten Light Welterweight Matty Tew makes his first trip to the famous York Hall, whilst Light Heavyweight Menay Edwards makes a much shorter trip from Crayford.

Finally, and adding an International flavour to the proceedings, is Norwegian Featherweight Andreas Evensen. Some may remember former WBO Inter-Continental Champion Evensen, as last year he crossed the North Sea to unsuccessfully challenge WBO World Champ Ricky Burns for his Super Featherweight crown.

Francis and George Warren’s Queensberry promotion event, headlined by the Enzo Maccarinelli versus Gyorgy Marosi, takes place at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, and broadcast live on BoxNation (Sky Platform Ch. 456), on Friday the 18th November 2011.

Tickets, priced £60 (Ringside) and £40 (Standard Seated), are available now on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or from the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA
