“My fighter will beat everybody in the heavyweight division; it’s only a matter of time,” says Boris Grinberg of AB Boxing, manager and father figure of undefeated Russian heavyweightMagomed “Mago” Abdusalamov (12-0, 12 KOs).

To say Team Abdusalamov is confident their fighter is the next big thing in the heavyweight division is an understatement. They are certain of it. “This guy beats everybody, including the Klitschkos. He’s too big and strong. Nobody can even go more than a few rounds with him in sparring.”

Abdusalamov will face Cuba’s Pedro Rodriguez (8-0, 6 KOs) in one of the televised bouts of the Friday, February 3, ESPN Friday Night Fights broadcast presented by Warriors Boxing and Sampson Boxing at the Texas Station Gambling Hall & Hotel in Las Vegas.

The event, entitled “Superbrawls”, will be topped by a 10-round light heavyweight main event between Colombian powerhouse Edison “Pantera” Miranda and South Africa’s WBC #6, WBA #13, and WBO #14-rated Isaac “Golden Boy” Chilemba, and also feature Hylon Williams Jr. (15-0, 3 KOs) of Las Vegas and Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (14-0, 11 KOs) in the eight-round lightweight co-main event

30-year-old “Mago” Abdusalamov is a crunching southpaw powerhouse who moves forward constantly and imposes his brute strength on his unfortunate foes.

Blessed with amazing patience for such a heavy-handed boxer, when faced with a challenging style, the big Russian also has the ability to study his opponent before pulverizing them, probably due to his extensive amateur career where he was the 2005 and 2006 Russian amateur champion at super heavyweight.

“They’re calling him the Russian Tyson and a lot of people are anxious to get a look at this guy,” said his promoter Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing. “The opponent he’s fighting was on the Cuban national team as an amateur and is also undefeated, but our guy is unstoppable. He never stops training; he’s strong as an ox, has all kinds of international experience and he listens well and learns a lot.”

Abdusalamov currently lives in Oxnard, California, training under the watchful eye of trainer Pablo Sarmiento. Sarmiento has tremendous experience in guiding southpaw fighters to glory, as he is also the trainer of WBC emeritus middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.

“By the end of this year, he’ll start beating top contenders like Chris Arreola and guys like that,” continued Grinberg. “He wants to fight them now, but nobody wants to fight him. We tried to make this fight against Travis Walker, but he ran away. Two or three fighters refused to fight him for this event. Nobody wants to be knocked out.”

###

Topping the all-action undercard will be “can’t miss” Puerto Rican super middleweight prospect Roberto Jose Acevedo (2-0, 1 KO) in a four-round showcase fight against Las Vegas resident Velvet Malone (0-3).

Other bouts scheduled include a noteworthy six-round super featherweight tussle between Igrim, Russia’s undefeated Eveny Gradovich (11-0, 6 KOs) and Las Vegas’ Robert Osiobe (11-3-4, 6 KOs); a four-round junior welterweight match-up between Vegas residents Cameron Kreal (0-0-2) and Jesus Gutierrez (1-0, 1 KO); and Puerto Rico’s Juan Carlos Velasquez (10-1, 5 KOs) in a six-round super featherweight bout against TBA.

JM: Isaac, February 3rd you will be stepping into the ring with Edison Miranda. What are your thoughts on Miranda as a fighter?

Isaac Chilemba: “Edison Miranda is a good fighter. He’s a puncher, he knows how to fight. I am not going to walk in there and not be ready. I know myself and I am ready for him. I am working in the gym, focusing on his weaknesses. I am feeling comfortable and I am looking forward to it.”

JM: You just said you are focusing on his weaknesses. I know you don’t want to give up your entire game plan but are there any specific weaknesses that you see in Miranda that you are looking to exploit in the ring?

Isaac Chilemba: “I don’t want to give up the game plan but I’ll just tell you that I will go into the ring, smack him, and knock him out!”  Read More…

KICKBOXING CHAMPION CHRIS ALGEIRI AIMS TO CONQUER THE BOXING WORLD

Posted on | January 27, 2012 | No Comments

By David Kassel ~ FightHype.com

Most 27-year old boxing prospects in the prime of their careers are getting ready for the marquee victory that will vault them into contender status for a world title shot.  Most of these boxers have a decorated amateur pedigree and have been active in the sport before hitting puberty.  Junior welterweight Chris Algieri (12-0, 6 KOs) isn’t most prospects, however, and he isn’t waiting for his chance.  He plans on taking it.  Algieri’s beginning in boxing began long before he turned pro in 2008 at the age of 24.  Truth is, he has been training for this opportunity for a long time.  Read More…

B-SCENE NEW SCHOOL PICK OF THE WEEK: CHRIS ALGIERI

By Jake Donovan ~ BoxingScene.com

Interview set up by Bernie Bahrmasel

As the trend of the current TV fights indicates, a fighter’s skill level is only a small part of the equation in keeping his name in lights.  There also has to be a backstory, as well as a reason to not only want to watch his fights, but to also keep coming back for more.

Chris Algieri is fortunate enough to be able to place a check mark next to each item.

The unbeaten junior welterweight is pulling off the improbable at the moment – succeeding in the pro ranks despite boasting no amateur experience and campaigning in a Long Island (NY) market that has long ago ceased serving as a boxing hotbed. Read More…

Bellator & MTV2 Bring Heavyweight RevengeTo Bossier City March 16

Posted on | January 27, 2012 | No Comments

This time it’s personal as Prindle faces Santos for the Heavyweight Tournament Championship

CHICAGO, Ill. (January 27, 2011) — Bellator Fighting Championships returns to the Bayou State on Friday, March 16 for Bellator 61 live from Bossier City at the Horseshoe Riverdome. The night will feature the long awaited rematch between “The American Solider” Eric Prindle (@EricPrindleMMA) and “The Big Monster” Thiago Santos (@BigMonsterMMA) to determine a winner from last season’s heavyweight tournament, as well a host of local talent from the Louisiana area.

Tickets for the event are now on sale and can be purchased online at Riverdome.com, by phone at 888-512-SHOW (7469) or by visiting The Gift Horse at Horseshoe Bossier City Casino. Tickets are priced from $25-$75. The event will also be broadcast LIVE starting at 7 p.m. CST on MTV2 and in commercial-free HD on EPIX. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. CST, with the first fight scheduled for 6 p.m. CST. The preliminary card, featuring the area’s top local talent will be streamed LIVE and FREE around the world on Spike.com starting at 6 p.m. CST.

“Louisiana’s been an amazing home to Bellator.  Our last two Louisiana events we’re spectacular sell outs, so bringing Bellator to Bossier City was an easy decision to make,” said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney. “This Prindle-Santos fight has war written all over it and both of these guys have taken this huge fight very personally. March 16 should be a great night.”

Prindle meets Santos after last season’s Heavyweight Finals were declared a no contest as Santos delivered what was ruled an accidental illegal blow to the groin of Eric Prindle, which eventually halted the fight. The two will square off to determine who will earn the right to face current Bellator Heavyweight Champion Cole Konrad(@ColeKonradMMA).

The night will also feature the quarterfinals of the Bellator Season 6 Middleweight Tournament. UFC veteran Maiquel “Big Rig” Falcao (@Falcaomma) will make his Bellator debut against the dominant Norman Paraisy. Falcao enters Bellator with an astonishing 23 knockouts to his record and will look to keep that trend intact at Bellator 61.

In a matchup worthy of a Middleweight title fight, Brian “The Predator” Rogers (@Brogthepredator) battles Brazilian ace Vitor Vianna (@VitorVianna) for a spot in the semifinals. For Rogers, the Ohio native wants to build off last season’s semifinals appearance and punch his ticket to a guaranteed title shot. Vianna put up a tremendous fight against eventual Middleweight Tournament Champion Alexander Shlemenko(@StormShlemenko) and is eager for another long tournament run.

Entering Bellator on a 14-fight win streak, explosive Russian Vyacheslav “Slava” Vasilevsky (@SlavaVasilevsky) will be making his U.S. debut in a fight with Victor O’ Donnell (@Victor_ODonnell). One of the most promising prospects in the world, “Slava” joins Bellator as two-time Sambo World Champion and will look to make his mark with Bellator.

Giva “The Arm Collector” Santana (@GivaSantana) is back with Bellator and will be gunning for another victim when he takes on Bruno Santos. Always looking for the armbar, Santana has tapped 13 of his 17 career opponents with the hold.

“A lot of fighters like to go out there and try to knock their opponents out as soon as they can, and that’s the same way I am with my submissions,” Santana said. “For me, to tap a guy out is the same feeling as the knockout. When a punch lands and you know you knocked your opponent out, I feel the same feeling when I lock up a submission on my opponent. I know right away that he’s going to tap, and it’s a great feeling.”
