Boxing Judge Glenn Feldman Conn. Boxing Hall of Fame Founder & 2011 Inductee
Posted on | October 5, 2011 | No Comments
7th annual Gala Induction Dinner Oct. 29 at Mohegan Sun
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (October 5, 2011) – Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame (CBHOF) founder and president Glenn S. Feldman will be one of seven inductees to be honored at the seventh annual CBHOF gala induction dinner Saturday, October 29 in the Uncas Ballroom at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville.
The other 2011 inductees include five-time world champion Vinny “The Pazmanian Devil” Paz, 1996 U.S. Olympic Boxing team captain Lawrence Clay-Bey, world light heavyweight title challenger Eric “Magic Man” Harding, ringside physician Dr. Michael Schwartz and, posthumously, boxer Kelvin Anderson and boxing coach Billy Taylor.
Also being honored are 2011 winners for professional and amateur fighters of the year, Delvin Rodriguez and Tremaine Williams. Don Trella will receive the official of the year award, and Peter Timothy will be the recipient of the achievement award.
Feldman of Avon, founded the CBHOF seven years ago. He is one of the most recognized and respected boxing judges in the world and has judged 97 world title bouts.
“I’m deeply honored to have been voted in as the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame’s first judge,” Feldman said. “I had the pleasure of working Vinny Paz’s 50th victory at Foxwoods as well as having judged a few of Eric Harding’s fights.Mike Schwartz and I have spent lots of time at ringside together over the years and we even traveled together for a memorable trip to Bangkok in 1996.”
Feldman, a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch in West Hartford, began his judging career 23 years ago and is closing in on his 100th world championship fight. He is a member of the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Organization, International Boxing Federation and the International Boxing Organization. He has judged fights all over the world including Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Panama, Japan, Scotland, Thailand and Kazakhstan.
The 57-year old Feldman recently judged the WBA heavyweight title fight between Alexander Povetkin and Ruslan Chagaev in Erfurt, Germany and earlier this year officiated the Victor Oritz-Andre Berto title fight at Foxwoods which is widely considered the 2011 Fight of the Year. “It was a wild affair,” Feldman noted. “Both fighters went down twice during the bout.”
Feldman has judged some of the sport’s biggest names including George Foreman, Ricky Hatton, Evander Holyfield, Micky Ward, Dana Rosenblatt, Chad Dawson, Sergio Martinez, Miguel Cotto, Andre Ward, Floyd Mayweather, Acelino Freitas, John Ruiz, Pernell Whitaker and Shane Mosely.
“It has been a privilege to be part of this sport,” Feldman added. “I’ve met so many great people all over the world and seen places you couldn’t even imagine.
“I pinch myself before every title fight. I’ve never taken an assignment lightly or for granted. We can determine a fighter’s destiny so we have to be sharp every night and for every fight whether it’s a four rounder or a championship.”
Tickets for the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame dinner are priced at $75 and are available by calling Kim Baker at the Mohegan Sun at 860-862-7377. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. followed by cocktails, dinner and the awards ceremony.

Pitt Coach Jason Peter’s Talks of Strength of Schedule to Takedown Wrestling
Posted on | October 5, 2011 | No Comments
PITTSBURGH–The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team released its 2011-12 schedule on Wednesday. The slate includes 16 dual meets and three tournaments.
In dual meet competition, the Eastern Wrestling League champion Panthers will take on six teams that finished in the top 30 at last season’s NCAA tournament. Included in that group is the defending national champion, Penn State.
During its six-match EWL schedule, Pitt will host three matches at Fitzgerald Field House. The final conference match will be at home against Edinboro (Feb. 17). The Panthers and Fighting Scots have combined to win the past eight EWL dual meet titles, including the previous two by Pitt.
In addition to hosting Edinboro, other home opponents include Michigan (Nov. 19), Ohio State (Dec. 9), Lock Haven (Jan. 13), Clarion (Jan. 20) and Hofstra (Feb. 10).
On Jan. 7, the Panthers will wrestle four matches when they host the Pitt Duals. Teams scheduled to attend are Columbia, Davidson, Eastern Michigan, Princeton and VMI. The complete schedule for the event will be finalized at a later date.
The Panthers’ road opponents are Lehigh (Nov. 12), Drexel (Nov. 13), Cleveland State (Dec. 11), Bloomsburg (Jan. 15), West Virginia (Feb. 4) and Penn State (Feb. 19).
Scheduled tournaments include the Buffalo Open (Nov. 6), Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas (Dec. 3) and the Lock Haven Invitational (Dec. 29). The Cliff Keen Invitational could be some of the toughest competition Pitt sees during the season as 12 of the top 25 teams from last year are expected to attend.
The 37th EWL Championships will be held at Clarion University on Sunday, March 4. Pitt is the defending team champion in the event after winning its first-ever title last season. Individually, Tyler Nauman will attempt to become Pitt’s first-ever four-time EWL champion and only the sixth wrestler from any school to accomplish the feat.
Pitt returns six national qualifiers from a team that set a program-record with eight wrestlers making the NCAA Championships. Returning qualifiers for the Panthers are seniors Nauman (141), Ethan Headlee (165) and Zac Thomusseit (197), juniors Donnie Tasser (157) andAnthony Zanetta (125), and sophomore Max Thomusseit (184). Matt Wilps, who redshirted last season but won the highly competitive Midlands Tournament, was a national qualifier in 2010. The NCAA Championships will be held March 15-17 in St. Louis, Mo.
Fans will get their first chance to check out this year’s team at the Blue vs. Gold Match on Thursday, Oct. 27 at Fitzgerald Field House.

World Bareknuckle Boxing Champion Bobby Gunn Calls Out To MMA Fighters, Boxers; Anyone Looking To Capture His Title
Posted on | October 5, 2011 | No Comments
It was recently announced that world heavyweight bareknuckle boxing champion of the world Bobby Gunn will be putting his title on the line as he accepted a challenge from world renowned and undefeated bareknuckle boxer James Quinn.
The two men solidified the fight this past week in New York City at the premier of Quinn’s movie Knuckle.
In the past few days, British heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury made it well known on ESPN and a variety of sites that he has much interest in fighting former UFC champion Brock Lesnar in a “bareknuckle war.”
Upon reading this, Gunn found it quite comical how a variety of fighters and organizations have been “piggy-backing” off all of the exposure he has garnered surrounding his winning the world title.
“Prior to my fight with Richard Stewart in August, the words “bareknuckle boxing” were rarely if ever uttered in the professional sports world,” said Gunn. “Now everyone has seen how big it is getting on an international level, and they want to be part of it.”
Gunn is excited to see the growing interest spread throughout the sports world about bareknuckle boxing, but doesn’t feel too threatened about losing his title anytime soon.
“There are a lot of great fighters out there in both the MMA and boxing world who are most likely going to try out bareknuckle boxing, but until they take me on and beat me, I will always retain the championship title of the world.”
Gunn will be squaring off against Quinn in January of 2012, a fight which is highly anticipated throughout the fight sports world.
“James Quinn is a great fighter and a great friend of mine, but come January, it is all about business,” said Gunn. “After I defeat Quinn I will accept any challenge from any fighter out there, and I will win.”
A seven time world cruiserweight champion, Gunn has tasted success before in the square circle, but is adamant on focusing all of his efforts going forward on bareknuckle boxing.
“I got into bareknuckle boxing scene to get away from all of the politics that surround boxing and MMA,” said Gunn. “I am a fighter, that’s what I do. I don’t want to deal with all of all the hassles that you see in boxing and MMA—fighters ducking each other, the corruption, etc. Being the world heavyweight bareknuckle boxing champion of the world, I will fight anyone anytime if the money is right. And until I get dethroned, I will always be the world champ.”

KELL BROOK’S SHEFFIELD SHOW SOLD-OUT: Steel City star vows to ‘make a statement’ on Saturday night
Posted on | October 5, 2011 | No Comments
Kell Brook’s World title eliminator with Rafal Jackiewicz at the Ponds Forge International Arena in Sheffield on Saturday night is a complete sell-out.
The unbeaten Welterweight star has now sold out back-to-back hometown shows as he continues his march to a World title shot, but fight fans without a ticket can catch the action live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1 from 8.30pm.
Brook recently signed a sponsorship deal with adidas and as his stock continues to rise around the World, so does the pressure on him to perform against the rugged Pole, ranked number five with the IBF and seven with The Ring magazine. Former undefeated European champ Jackiewicz, 34, fought Jan Zaveck for the IBF World title last September and has never been stopped in 48 fights – so the pressure is on for the 25 year-old to perform and he says he’ll thrive on that on Saturday.
“I’m getting a lot of attention and I love it – I know now that I have to win and I have to look good and I think Jackiewicz is perfect for me,” said Brook. “The World champions at my weight are making excuses or asking for too much money. After I do a job on this guy I will get my chance and the World title fight I deserve. I want to fight for the World title after this fight and I’m happy to fight any of the World titles away from home if I have to.
“Fighting in Sheffield again in front of another sell-out is fantastic and we’re moving up levels all the time – better fights in bigger venues,” said Brook. “Lovemore N’dou was the toughest opponent of my career – I’m so glad it went 12 rounds and I’m pleased to have put what I thought was a good performance in for the crowd and Sky – that’s what it’s all about.
“The N’dou fight was unbelievable. I hadn’t boxed in Sheffield since I was 18 and the atmosphere was so special. To come out and face a great name like N’dou was a great experience and now we’re going even bigger in Ponds Forge against Jackiewicz, it’s going to be even more intense and I’m looking to make a statement and be the first to stop him.”
