BERNARD HOPKINS MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

Posted on | October 4, 2011 | No Comments

Bernard Hopkins, WBC and Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight World Champion

“I chose to continue to fight and defend what I worked so hard to get.So why not get all of the benefits of what I’ve been doing for 20-something years and then walk away when it’s time?

“I think that it’ll come down to who is the better fighter. The better fighter, the better person, the better strategist and who wants it the most.

“It really would be gratifying to me and happy for me to sit back in my 60’s and hear commentators say, “This guy is four fights away from beating Bernard Hopkins’ record.

“In today’s world where, unfortunately, most athletes, either don’t stay as focused long enough after they get a taste of what we call success in life, or just run into the wrong match, the wrong person. So I’m going to have fun in the second half of my life.

“Well, Chad Dawson said something that made sense. He’s going to be throwing a lot of punches, but I’m going to be connecting a lot of punches. He’s going to throw all the punches he wants, but I’m going to be connecting more than he is throwing.

“I’m coming in there with an aggressive game, but a smart game. If people think that the last two fights of my career were the old Bernard Hopkins from the Blue Horizon to Atlantic City days in the early 90’s, then I’m saying that they should watch this fight.

“The bottom line is they are going to see a better, a more aggressive, smart fighter in me when I beat Chad Dawson.

“When you look at my résumé compared with his [Dawson’s] résumé, you must say, or must agree, that my résumé is a Ferrari and his is a Mercedes.

“Keep an eye on [Danny] Garcia. He’s got a fight coming up [on October 15] that’ll prove he belongs in the pound for pound contender’s bracket.

“At the end of the day, what Dewey did is beyond anything that I’ve done in the ring; it is beyond anything I accomplished outside of the ring in my personal [life].

“I want my gray to be in the ring. I want Chad Dawson to see I have gray hair. I want to look like his father—well, I could be his father. I’m not, but I could be!That age difference is appropriate for me to look like I’m gray and I have gray, because realistically, if you do the math, he could be my son.

“There are a lot of people that are 46 and younger that feel lousy today that never took a punch. Well, change your lifestyle. Change what you do. I did it years ago, so I’m ahead of the game. I’m not feeling like I’m 26 every day.I always say if I have to put a number on myself, the way I feel today, I feel like I am 36. So if I’m 36 to 46, that means I’m 10 years ahead of the game.”

Danny Garcia, Top Undefeated Junior Welterweight Contender

“I feel blessed, just for being recognized that I have the talent.[For Hopkins to] recognize my hard work and dedication. I’m just blessed now, and it’s motivating me more to shine on October 15.

“I never rely on my power because that can’t win you a fight. I rely on my skills. I think I use my brain, and I break my opponent down and land the big shots. So my power is just my last resort.

“I know I got more mature since I turned pro.I’m a lot smarter and it’s a chess game in there. So now when I feel like a guy’s kind of outsmarting me a little bit, I stay relaxed and I just try to figure it out.

“It was definitely a growing process. I learned how to be a smart fighter and not go in over anxious and just set the pace.

“I just feel strong, and we had a great camp. I’m just anxious to show the world what I can do. I’m ready. I wish it was tomorrow.

“I watched Kendall Holt’s last fight and I said to my dad, ‘I am going to fight the winner of this fight.’So I feel like I predicted my future a little bit.

“Holt isn’t going to touch me like he did to his last opponent. You can’t hit what you can’t see.

“I feel like I took my time. I have had 21 fights; I never rushed and was like, ‘Yeah, go ahead and put me on HBO,’ or begged for it. It came to me when they thought I was ready. I know I am ready, so we took the opportunity and we trained hard.”

Dewey Bozella, Top Undefeated Junior Welterweight Contender

“When I was young, I was bitter because I never thought I’d get out of there [prison].I thought I’d die in there.

“I came to Bernard Hopkins’ camp and I was approved to fight.Thank God for that. I worked hard and it paid off.

“I’m not going out to lie down; I’m going out to fight. I’m not going to let this guy come and whip my butt.

“[On being able to have his first professional fight] it’s just like getting out of prison. It is a new experience.

“I always thought I had a chance to get out.People said, ‘Ah, it’ll never happen, it’ll never happen,’ but it did happen.

“I want to get this [fight] over with and then I want to open my own gym.

“My goal is to help young kids as well as adults to help turn their lives around and keep out of trouble.

“[My gym is going to be for] whoever comes in, but it’s going to be for the kids.

“I am a professional fighter. I’m here.

“[On earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in prison] I always said, ‘How can I give something back to society if I have nothing to offer?

“I knew I was getting out of prison.Either I was going to die in there and go out in a box, or I was going to walk out of there.”

Naazim Richardson, Hopkins’ Trainer

“You can’t underestimate Dawson in any way, shape or form.

“Pascal and Pavlik were supposed to be the guys running the sport. I said if you can beat these kids, you can beat anybody.

“I love boxing. I love the sport. And this guy [Hopkins] is boxing.”

Darley Perez new power player in lightweight division

Posted on | October 4, 2011 | No Comments

TOTOWA, N.J. (October 4, 2011) – Undefeated Columbian power-puncher Darley Perez has firmly established himself as a serious contender in the lightweight division, destroying veteran Oscar Meza last Friday night on ShoBox: The Next Generation, at Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California.

Perez (23-0, 18 KOs), a 2008 Columbian Olympian, introduced himself to the American television audience with a bang, as he controlled the action from the opening bell, consistently beating a game Meza (22-4) to the punch, before finally pounding the tough Mexican him into submission for an impressive victory by technical knockout (TKO6 – 3:00). After Meza sustained a cut over his left eye, compounded by Perez’ brutal assault in the sixth round, Meza’s corner asked the referee to halt the action prior to the bell for the seventh.

Perez is co-promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and Thompson Boxing Promotions. “Darley was in complete command of the fight,” promoter Gary Shaw said. “He certainly made a name for himself in the U.S. We believe he’s ready for any of the top lightweights in the world, including world champions Brandon Rios and Miguel Vasquez.   In addition to his obvious power, Darley showed very good boxing skills, and solid defense. Now, boxing fans know why we are so high on him and Darley is only 28 years old.”

The 5′ 7″ Perez is presently rated No. 5 by the World Boxing Association and No. 12 by the International Boxing Federation.

After the victory, Palmer Tweeted, “Winning feels great. I won’t have it any other way.”

King of Hardcore: Funk vs. Dreamer ‘AWE Wrestling: Night Of The Legends’ PPV

Posted on | October 4, 2011 | No Comments

Saturday night, Oct. 15 in Virginia

FISHERSVILLE, Virginia (October 4, 2011) – Who the real King of Hardcore is will be decided October 15 when ageless Hall of Famer Terry Funk takes on the heart-and-soul of ECW, Tommy Dreamer, for bragging rights in the explosive “AWE Wrestling: Night Of The Legends”Pay-Per-View event, live from Augusta Expo in Fishersville, Virginia.

The featured match pits former WWE and WCW World Heavyweight Champion Kevin Nash, and his mystery tag-team partner against the former three-time NWA Tag Team Champions, The Rock-n-Roll Express, Ricky Morton, and Robert Gibson. The 7’ 1”, 300-plus pound Nash and the small but wily Morton have had a bitter, blood-letting feud dating back a decade. That grudge match will finally be settled once and for all on Oct. 15 in front of a live national television/Internet audience and a packed live house in Virginia.

The Awesome Wrestling Entertainment (AWE) extravaganza will be available for live viewing at 9 PM/ET – 6 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, AT & T and Verizon in the United States, as well as Bell TV in Canada, for a suggested retail price of only $24.95. The broadcast will also be available live on an Internet pay-per-view basis at www.AWEonPPV.com and www.GFL.TV.

Funk vs. Dreamer is drawing as much fan attention as the featured match. This one is mentor vs. protégé, teacher against student, plus an overabundance of mutual respect between the two combatants. The inspirational Funk, a two-time heavyweight champion in the ECW and NWA, has taught Dreamer, a 14-time WWF/WWE Hardcore Champion and two-time ECW world title-holder, most of what he knows about wrestling.

“Someday,” Funk explains, “you have to pass the hat. But, I’m not ready for that, not yet. If I had to pass it, the guy I’d pass it to is Tommy Dreamer. He has a lot of guts and ability, and I’ve always felt that way. He’s a very sharp guy in the world of professional wrestling, and he came-up through the school of hard knocks. I certainly don’t want to pass the hat, but Dreamer has paid his dues. It’s certainly going to be an interesting match.

“I am his mentor and have been since he was a young man. I’m his mentor…but he still wants to kick the crap out of me. I guess we all feel that way. I’m really looking forward to fighting Tommy Dreamer. I can’t beat him but I can out-smart him.”

Other wrestling icons among the 30 all-stars being showcased at the AWE Legends event include Diamond Dallas Page (“DDP”), “Hacksaw” Jim DugganFit FinlayAmy “Lita” DumasPerry Saturn, and many more.

“Hacksaw” Jim Duggan continues his fan-supported patriotic theme, waving an American flag as he enters the ring, and then using his trademark 2 X 4 on the hated Arab-American oil magnate Mohammad Akbar.

After a nine-year absence, past WCW and WWE star Perry Saturn makes the biggest comeback in wrestling history, against feared enforcer CW Anderson.

Also scheduled to be in action are former WWE and WCW title-holder Fit Finlay versus 21-year-old rising-star and hot AWE World Heavyweight prospect, “Loose Cannon” Alex Silva, who will be aided in his corner by “Nature Boy”Buddy Landel.

Included in the non-stop action Awesome Wrestling Entertainment (AWE) card is former three-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion Diamond Dallas Page (“DDP”), as well as Amy “Lita” Dumas, former World Tag TeamChampion and member of the “Four Horsemen,” Tully Blanchard and Babydoll, in addition toMidnight ExpressIvan KoloffTommy “Wildfire” Rich and Sonjay Dutt tangles with Jamin Olivencia.

All wrestlers and matches are subject to change.

Ringside tickets are already sold-out but $20.00 general admission tickets are available to purchase at The Augusta Expo (540.337.2552), Crossroads Music in Staunton (540.885.3612 andWaynesboro(540.943.3613), or order on line at www.awesomewrestlingentertainment.com.

Bang Productions Seeking Pledges for Duva Documentary

Posted on | October 4, 2011 | No Comments

Bang Productions and well-respected producer/director John Edmonds Kozma are currently soliciting pledged donations on www.kickstarter.com, the largest funding platform for creative projects in the world, to help produce a 90-minute documentary for worldwide release on legendary boxing trainer/manager Lou Duva.

Funds raised will help Kozma and his team shoot and archive footage for about 75 days. With an additional 30 days of post-production for a total of 105 days. Interested donors are encouraged to visit www.kickstarter.com as soon as possible, as the project will only be funded if at least $133,000 is pledged by Friday, November 11, at 10:38 AM/EST.

There are several incentive “thank you” packages available onwww.kickstarter.com for different donation amounts and no minimum donation.

89-year-old Duva, known as the “Godfather of Boxing” has a story to tell like no other, from humble beginnings in New Jersey to his rise to icon status in the sweet science, Duva has rubbed shoulders of the rich and famous, as well as all of boxing’s most well-known and beloved heroes.

To be narrated by film and television star Tony Danza, the film promises to tell both the story of boxing itself from the perspective of a man who lived through it all, while also telling the deeply moving story of a man devoted to his wife (a bond made stronger by her diagnosis of MS).

Included in the film will be many surprising details about the legendary man, including:

1. His discharge from the army during World War II due to fistfights.

2. His friendship and business relationship with Rocky Marciano.

3. His rise to fame after the 1984 Olympics.

4. Hanging out with a diverse mix of Hollywood stars and infamous characters including John Gotti, Joe Dimaggio, Frank Sinatra, Tom Cruise, Sammy Davis Jr., and Christy Brinkley.

5. The crazy, ticket-selling schemes from the days of promoting small shows at theIce World facility inTotowa, New Jersey.

6. His exploits with the biggest names in boxing history, including Evander Holyfield, Pernell Whitaker, Lennox Lewis, Hector Camacho, etc.

7. His interesting day jobs (Duva worked and owned a trucking company, was a restaurant manager, a minister, and a circus clown).

Kozma first came to prominence as a producer of music videos and later produced the sports documentary “The Enduro at Erzberg”, chronicling the world famous motorcycle race in Germany. In 2006, he followed up the success of The Enduro at Erzberg, with a documentary entitled Travis Pastrana’s Baja Diaries, looking at motosport superstar, stunt performer, and MTV personality Travis Pastrana.

That same year, Kozma completed his trilogy of motosports documentaries by producing Freestyle Prague, which he also directed.

In 2007, he produced and directed a documentary called Giant Maximus, focusing on the annual Los Angeles-based music festival. The film was narrated by world famous club DJ Armin van Buuren. That same year, it was announced that Kozma bring an adaptation of the Erin Chandler’s play June Bug vs. Hurricane to the screen. Scripted by filmmaker Nick Cassavetes, the film, entitled Kentucky Rhapsody, tells the colorful real-life story of Chandler’s family, led by her father, former Kentucky governor and Commissioner of Baseball A. B. “Happy” Chandler, Sr. The film is set to go into production 2012.

“We are very excited to have this opportunity with Kickstarter,” said Kozma. “This documentary will show the world the history and true grit of boxing.”
