Loaded Spike.com fights Saturday at Bellator 52 Feature Debut of World Class Striker & 2 Tournament Competitors Going Head to Head

Posted on | September 28, 2011 | No Comments

Cosmo premieres & Electric featherweights Bryan Goldsby and Genair da Silva square off

CHICAGO, Ill. (September 28, 2011) — The fans in Lake Charles, Louisiana need to get to their seats early – and the fans at home around the world need to get to Spike.com as the Bellator fighters continue to produce memorable fights each week. Bellator 52, which takes place THIS Saturday, Oct. 1 from L’Auberge du Lac Casino Resort, features a stacked Season 5 Heavyweight Tournament, plus the highly-anticipated debut of devastating striker and champion kickboxer Cosmo “Good Boy” Alexander against Lake Charles native Josh Quayhagen and a fantastic featherweight battle between Bellator tournament veterans Bryan Goldsby and Genair da Silva. These two instant classics can be seen LIVE around the world on Spike.com at 7 p.m. ET.

The Season 5 heavyweight tournament will feature an eight-man field that boasts a dominating 73-15-2 record along with 41 combined knockouts and goes LIVE on MTV2 and in commercial-free HD on EPIX starting at 9 p.m. ET.

The 29-year-old Alexander will be making his MMA debut against Quayhagen, who is a local fighter getting his pro start as well. Alexander enters Bellator with an incredible resume in Muay Thai, as the accomplished striker has over 50 professional kickboxing fights under his belt, along with several of the sport’s most notable championship titles. The Miami resident is one of the most highly-coveted prospects in all of MMA and looks to put on a show for Bellator fans. To see video of Cosmo’s devastating striking in competition, please click HERE.

The prelims will also feature two former featherweight tournament participants vying for another run in a Bellator tournament. Season 3 participant Bryan Goldsby is eager to get back into the Bellator cage, and will have his hands full with Brazilian knockout artist Genair da Silva. Goldsby has studied da Silva, and is ready for anything the budding star will throw at him.

“I really feel good right now,” said a confident Goldsby. “I’ve put on some muscle, and improved my game across the board. I’m still expecting a stand up war, but if he wants to take it to the ground, I’ll be ready. Either way, it’s going to be explosive.”

Obtaining a tough draw against Top 10 featherweight Marlon Sandro in Bellator’s Summer Series Tournament, da Silva suffered his first loss in over two years with a close split-decision result. After watching the tournament unfold, da Silva was quick to accept the invitation to step back into the Bellator cage.

“I’m just ready to fight and show the world what I can do,” said da Silva. “I wasn’t happy with the decision in my last fight, and I am not going to leave it in the hands of the judges this time. My goal is to become the next Bellator Featherweight Champion and this is the first step.”

Undefeated light heavyweight Matt Van Buren joins Bellator looking for victory over Alexandria, La. resident Nick Nichols. At 25 years old, the Virginia based Van Buren will look to impress Bellator brass with a dominating win.

There are also two intriguing non-tournament heavyweight fights on the ledger as Josh Burns battles former The Ultimate Fighter competitor Zak Jensen, and Liron Wilson takes on the undefeated Justin Frazier, who will put his 4-0 record on the line.

Darren Hamilton: I’m Fighting For Redemption, Not The Money

Posted on | September 28, 2011 | No Comments

With all the controversy surrounding the recent Victor Ortiz – Floyd Mayweather jnr. fight many London fans may be a little confused to why Ortiz only received the penalty of a single point deduction – and a dubious sucker punch KO for his efforts – whilst back at York Hall in June Darren Hamilton was not just disqualified, but also fined and suspended, for an almost identical action against Dave Ryan.

Like Ortiz, Hamilton accepted the result without argument. In fact the likable Bristol born fighter, now residing in London, has spent a lot of time soul searching and bridge mending, as he is keen to make amends before the pair once again face each other, for The British Master Light Welterweight title, a second time on the Spencer Fearon Hard Knocks Boxing Promotions ‘This is Hard Knocks’ show at York Hall in London on Friday, 7th October.

Hamilton’s determination to make amends, for that red mist moment, became clear  when he spoke earlier today, “I’m fighting for redemption, not the money, he’s fighting for the money.

Basically Dave Ryan has asked for more money to fight me again, myself personally  I’m completely not interested in the money.

You wouldn’t believe what I actually went through. On the night I didn’t realise the seriousness of what I did.

Afterwards I soon found out.  Not only couldn’t I box for twenty eight days, because the British Boxing Board of Control suspended me, but I also had to pay a fine to the BBBofC.

I was getting abuse from his fans.  My girlfriend, who was at the fight at the time, she was getting abuse as well from his fans. Some of it I heard, it was racial abuse.

Since then I’ve also been getting abuse on the internet from his fans, which I may not like but do understand.

I let Spencer (promoter Spencer Fearon) down, I let the fans down and I let myself down, something I am really sorry for.

It’s put me in a position, like where I was before, where I have to prove myself again like I did against Ideh Ochuku, after being knocked out by Daryl Setterfield, and the time they said I didn’t have a chance against Peter McDonagh, where I was the complete underdog.

I’ve gone right back to that hunger again, this is it again right now. I am completely solemn and completely dedicated to winning this fight. My head is completely on it, it’s all I’ve been thinking about, you know.”

Darren Hamilton versus Dave Ryan, for the British Masters Light Welterweight title, will take place at the Hard Knocks Boxing Promotions  ‘This Is Hard Knocks’ event, which will be headlined by Choi Tseveenpürev, at York Hall, Bethnal Green, on Friday 7th October 2011 and broadcast live on Premier Sports (Sky channel 433).

Tickets for ‘This Is Hard Knocks’ – priced £35 (Unreserved) and £60 (Ringside), are available now on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at The TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA.  For further information please call 07960 850645.

Carl Froch Brings In Top Prospect Richard Pierson To Prepare For Ward Fight

Posted on | September 27, 2011 | No Comments

To assist with the training for his upcoming WBC Super Middleweight championship of the world against reigning champ Andre Ward, Carl Froch has brought in top middleweight prospect Richard Pierson as a sparring partner.

Pierson (9-2, 6 KO) has a style that is comparable to Ward with his speed and power, and will be able to emulate what Froch will face in December.

Under the tutelage of former heavyweight knockout artist and renowned trainer Lou Esa, Pierson is looking to use his skillset to move up the ranks of a strong middleweight division and work his way towards a title fight in the near future.

“I think he (Pierson) can be one of the best middleweights out there in a short time,” says Esa.  “He has a lot of drive and purpose, something a fighter needs to give him an edge.”

In his short career Pierson turned heads with his unrelenting attack and his ability to end the fight with one punch.

Inactive since last June, Pierson was originally scheduled to fight last week, but the show got postponed.

“We are in the process of putting together another fight for him now,” said Esa.  “I am confident that Froch’s team will see the skillset Pierson has and makes a try to get him on the undercard of the title fight in December.”

Esa is quickly becoming well known as one of the top boxing coaches in New Jersey.  In addition to Pierson, Esa works with rising welterweight star Vinny “The Lion” O’Brien.

“We have a great team here,” said Esa.  “These kids work harder than any fighters I have ever had the opportunity to work with, and it will show when they get into the ring.  The boxing world is going to become very familiar with the names Pierson and O’Brien very soon.”

Esa currently trains out of Final Round Boxing and Fitness in Whippany, New Jersey.

Carl Froch will take on Andre Ward for the WBC Super Middleweight championship of the world December 17, 2011 in Atlantic City.
