AWE Night Of The Legends PPV – Saturday, Oct. 15

Kevin Nash, DDP, Rock‘ Roll Express, Terry Funk, ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan, Tommy Dreamer

FISHERSVILLE, Virginia (September 27, 2011) –Professional wrestling returns to its hardcore roots Saturday night, October 15 when 30 all-stars appear at the “AWE Wrestling: Night Of The Legends”Pay-Per-View event, live from Augusta Expo in Fishersville, Virginia.

Wrestling icons being showcased include “Big Sexy” Kevin NashDiamond Dallas Page (“DDP”), The Rock-n-Roll ExpressTerry Funk“Hacksaw” Jim DugganFit FinlayTommy DreamerAmy “Lita” DumasPerry Saturn, and many more.

The Awesome Wrestling Entertainment extravaganza will be available for live viewing at 9 PM/ET – 6 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, AT & T and Verizon in the United States, as well as Bell TV in Canada, for a suggested retail price of only $24.95. The broadcast will also be available live on an Internet pay-per-view basis at AWEonPPV.com and GFL.TV.

“AWE is all about old-school wrestling with today’s look – glitz, glamour and a light show to rival any other wrestling pay-per-views,” AWE founder Marvin Ward explained. “It’s the best of both worlds. This is what real pro wrestling fans want, not the soap opera shows they’ve been getting. Instead of watching the typical 2 ½-hour-pay per view with four matches and two hours of talk, AWE is pro wrestling from start to finish: less talk, more action.”

Ward, a former wrestler himself turned entrepreneur had more to say: “Young wrestling fans will have an opportunity to see legends who they’ve heard so much about, while older fans will be able to turn-back time, watching their heroes again. Young fans will see where wrestling evolved from and how it got where it is today. This is an opportunity for young and old fans to come together as wrestling families, enjoying a memorable evening, one that will probably never happen again with so many wrestling legends featured on one show.”

The feature match pits 7’ 1’, 300-plus pound Kevin Nash, a former WWE and WCW World Heavyweight Champion, and his mystery tag-team partner, somebody who could very well be an infamous member of ‘The Clique,” against former three-time NWA Tag Team Champions, The Rock-n-Roll Express. Ricky Morton, one half of famed “The Rock-n-Roll Express” along with Robert Gibson, and Nash have had a hateful relationship for a decade, and the two are going to settle the score Oct. 15 in front of a live national television/Internet audience and packed live house in Virginia.

To determine the real King of Hardcore wrestling, ageless Terry Funk goes to war with former ECW superstar Tommy Dreamer. Funk, a two-time heavyweight champion in the ECW and NWA, as well as a multi-organization Hall of Famer, has inspired countless wrestlers aspiring to emulate his hardcore style of wrestling. Dreamer, known as the hardcore heart-and-sold of the ECW, is a 14-time WWF/WWE Hardcore Champion and two-time ECW world title-holder.

Patriotic“Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, proudly waving an American flag with his trademark 2 X 4 in his other hand, will enter the ring to take on Mohammad Akbar, the sneering son of an Arab-American oil magnate.

The biggest comeback in wrestling history will take place when, after a nine-year absence, past WCW and WWE star Perry Saturn returns to face enforcer CW Anderson.

Also scheduled to be in action is former WWE and WCW title-holder Fit Finlay against 21-year-old rising-star“Loose Cannon” Alex Silva, who is considered a future AWE World Heavyweight contender. He will have“Nature Boy” Buddy Landel in his corner. Sonjay Dutt faces Jamin Olivencia.

The action doesn’t stop there. Also scheduled for this exciting Awesome Wrestling Entertainment (AWE) card is former three-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion and one of the most popular wrestlers of all-time, Diamond Dallas Page (“DDP”),as well as Amy Dumas (formerly known as Lita), former World Tag Team Champion and member of the “Four Horsemen,” Tully Blanchard and Babydoll, in addition to Midnight ExpressIvan Koloff, and Tommy “Wildfire” Rich.

All wrestlers and matches are subject to change.

Ringside tickets are already sold-out but $20.00 general admission tickets are available to purchase at The Augusta Expo (540.337.2552), Crossroads Music in Staunton(540.885.3612 andWaynesboro(540.943.3613), or order on line at www.awesomewrestlingentertainment.com.

British Title Shot For Williams – Faces Norton In London, Oct 21st

Posted on | September 27, 2011 | No Comments

Streatham’s Leon ‘Solid’ Williams has had a very good week or so, first he beats Battersea’s Nick ‘The Ox’ Okoth with a fifth round TKO on Sunday last week, then a few days later his manager, Johnny Eames, receives a call from Frank Warren Promotions’ match maker, Dean Powell, offering Williams a shot at Rob Norton’s British Cruiserweight title on the 21st October at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London.

Following a training session, under the watchful eyes of his co-trainer Barry Smith at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, Williams spoke briefly on the upcoming British title fight. “It’s a good move, it’s something I’ve wanted for a long time.

Every British boxer wants the British title and that’s what I want to do. I’ve got the shot now and I want to bring the belt back to South London.

I’ve had a couple of really good stoppage wins lately, thanks to Johnny Eames and Barry Smith, they’ve been training me well. We study the opponents thoroughly, then put the game plan together to shut them down in the ring to get another good win for myself and the TKO gym.

I think it could be a messy fight, Rob’s an awkward southpaw, but I’m still going to bring it to him. A fight’s a fight and I like to fight, so it’s ding ding and put it on him.

It’s absolutely brilliant, can’t wait, team solid all the way every day, yeah.”

Leon ‘Solid’ Williams versus Rob Norton for the British Cruiserweight Championship headlines the Frank Warren promoted event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Friday the 21st October 2011.

Tickets, priced £40 (standard) and £60 (ringside) for Williams vs. Norton will be available shortly, either direct from Leon Williams – tickets will also be available at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA and on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com

Rumble in the Cage 44

Click here to watch this event on GoFightLive!

Once again R.I.T.C proved why it is the Premier MMA Organization in Western Canada, with a night filled with EXCITEMENT. Out of 10 fights only 1 went the distance.

The amateur’s stared off the night with a blast. Mike Amstead (3-1) took advantage of the inexperienced Kale Barr (0-1), causing him to tap out via arm bar in his pro debut at the0:42 mark of the 1st round.

In the final amateur bout, Nathan Harrison (2-1) used superior striking to dominate the 1st Round and a 1/2. Midway through the 2nd Round, Harrison made the first take down. He then quickly transitioned the take down into a triangle choke causing Rylee McKay (1-1) to tap out at the 3:07 mark.

The Pro portion of the card started off with Josh Kitchen (2-1) using a take down to set up a fierce barrage of punches on Joff Johnston (0-1). This caused the Referee in charge to call a halt to the action at the 3:44 mark of the 1st Round.

The Pro Debut of Ali Saif (0-1) did not go exactly as planned against Joey Tracey (2-1). Saif, the amateur wrestling stand out, finally took Tracey down in his 3rd attempt and applied an ankle lock. Only to have Tracey finagle out and rain down a storm of hammerfists. This cause the Referee to stop the action at the 2:23 mark of the 1st Round.

Allen Munroe (4-3) and Maged Hammo (1-1) were once training partners, but tonight they we enemies. Munroe used his superior wrestling to take down Hammo time and time again in route to a workman like Unanimous Decision.

In the only Pro Kick Boxing (K-1 Rules) fight of the night. Tim Tamaki (1-0) used what can only be deemed vicious striking to drop veteran Jesse Seberg (5-4) 3 times within 1:16 of the 1st Round. The referee finally stepped in after the 3rd knockdown to wave the fight off.

Brendan “The Hacksaw” Blacquier (3-1) showed why they dubbed him “The Hacksaw” tonight. He sawed right through Rob Ryan (0-2) stopping him cold with an insane right/left combo at the 1:05 mark of the 1st Round.

Veteran Nolan Clark (4-11) took the fight to the younger Brandt Dewsberry (6-1-1) in the 1st round. Clark scored a take down early and subdued Dewsberry with strikes, while attempting to lock on a rear naked choke. Both men stared the 2nd Round trading strikes, until Dewsberry land a thunderous straight right hand. He followed that up with a tornado of punches on the grounded fighter, causing the referee to wave off the bout at the 0:43 mark.

Moise Rimbom (18-9-3), who has faced big names such as Allistar Overeem, landed a monster take down causing his opponent Jared Kilkenny (9-9) to break his arm and tap out in the 1st Round. Kilkenny showed great sportsmanship by riling the crowd up from the ground after the fight.

In the Main Event, Brandon MacArthur (8-17) submitted hometown favorite Dan Chambers (16-17) via standing guillotine at the 0:32 mark of the 1st Round.

This card was MUST SEE I..P..P..V!!! 10 Fights, 6 T/KO, 3 submissions, and 1 Unanimous Decisions are now available on GFL.TV ON Demand for a LOW LOW Price of $9.99. School of Hard Knocks Fighting Championship 14

Click here to watch this event on GoFightLive!

In the main event, Keto Allen (6-2) fights Andrew Buckland (13-8-1) in a welterweight championship bout in a battle of British Columbia natives. Allen is coming off of an impressive first round submission win in July and looks to add to his momentum with the bout against Buckland. Buckland is on a two fight submission win streak of his own. Buckland has fought all over Canada and his record reads like a “who’s who” of some of the top MMA fighters from the Great White North. With the HKFC Welterweight Championship on the line, expect these two gladiators to leave it all in the cage. Both guys have wins via TKO and submission and are well-rounded athletes, but it might come down to experience as Buckland has faced much tougher opponents throughout his career. This is a great matchup and what is sure to be a barnburner of a fight.

In the co-main event, Charmaine “Not So Sweet” Tweet (0-1) battles Heather Martin (2-1, amateur record) who is making her professional debut. Tweet is coming off of a tough debut fight with Ronda Rousey who caused quite a buzz with her last fight in Strikeforce. For Tweet, the bout with Martin is another opportunity to showcase her overall MMA skillset which begins with her base, kickboxing. Tweet was also able to show some great scrambling in her previous fight so she is quite proficient in her standup and ground. Martin is no stranger to throwing punches and will look to mix it up with Tweet on the feet. Expect Martin to stand in the middle of the cage and throw punches in bunches. This bout could be Fight of the Night and should be action packed from the opening bell.

Along with 5 pro bouts, HKFC is also a proving ground for amateur fighters ready to earn their stripes. The 10-bout amateur series will separate the contenders from the pretenders and build to the future for HKFC and Canadian MMA.

Looking Back on a Looming Legend: Jon Jones vs. Ryan Verrett: USFL War in The Woods (May, 2008)

Posted on | September 26, 2011 | No Comments

By: Rich Bergeron

I was in the audience, very near the area where the above footage was shot at Foxwoods Casino when Jon Jones scored his third first round knockout of his young, promising MMA career. He tore through the local East Coast circuits with virtually nothing but knockouts. There was only one submission win for Jones on his way to back to back UFC fights where he saw his first decisions in the sport. Andre Gusmao (UFC 87) and Stephan Bonnar (UFC 94) went down by way of unanimous decision to Jones in his first two UFC appearances. He proceeded to dominate 99 percent of the competition he faced from then on. Only one DQ against Matt Hamill stains his spotless record.

Jones took Quinton “Rampage” Jackson to the deepest point in a fight he’s ever personally been to. His first time entering the fourth round worked out well for Jones, and he drowned Jackson quickly in the deep water with a rear naked choke. It was his first time securing a win that way with only three of his previous fights ending with a submission, all of them guillotine chokes. Talk of Jones someday battling Anderson Silva is overtaking the chatter calling for a fight between Georges St. Pierre and Silva. Jones is still taking it one fight at a time, but his confidence level is through the roof.

Rashad Evans may provide more of a stylistic challenge for Jones, but the champ’s amazing reach and natural ability is bound to allow him to overcome any obstacle he faces in that fight. By this time next year fans will be salivating over the prospect of Jones fighting Silva to settle the pound for pound best debate. There are still plenty of people not ready to jump on the Jon Jones bandwagon for fear it’s too early and he hasn’t been tested. If he continues to blaze this kind of bold path through the sport, though, there’s little doubt he’ll be dominant enough to demand a fight with Silva someday.

Jones’ success is a tribute to his dynamic fighting style matched with the physique of a true athlete. He is built for the sport with long reach and lanky arms and legs that come in handy on leg kicks, knees, elbows, and long range punching. A slick wrestling background adds a new dimension to his striking, as once you enter his grappling range you can forget about landing any really effective punches or strikes of your own. Jones smothers opponents at close range and picks them apart from afar. At one point against Rampage, Jones casually reached out his hand and gingerly took hold of Jackson’s wrist while the two were going toe to toe. Jackson seemed to suddenly appreciate Jones could literally reach out and touch him from so far away.

The prospect of a steadily improving Jones moving through the short list of potential opponents in his way at this point is exciting. His performances will surely elevate the sport and make him a household name as the UFC’s Fox deal comes to fruition over the next year. He’ll be a huge draw, because he’s really one of the only fighters out there who can dictate the pace and fight a technically sound brawl that pleases the audience… and the judges who don’t have to score the fight.

Looking back on the 2008 Jones fight above, you see him land a smashing right hand in the first few seconds. That’s Jones more than 3 long years ago, and he’s ever evolving. The transition for Jones has gone so smoothly from being a relative unknown into acquiring his new status as a superior fighter who mixes everything together perfectly. His win Saturday night confirms he’s made it to prime time and can handle the championship rounds. The sky is the limit for this young champ, and the prospect of a superfight between him and Silva may be more realistic at this point than the signing of Pacquiao vs. Mayweather in boxing.
