Baker, Rogers, Shlemenko and Vianna Advance to Semis of Middleweight Tourney

Posted on | September 18, 2011 | No Comments

Hollywood, FLA. (September 17, 2011) By Derek Constable- It was a night of big finishes at Bellator 50 as the beginning of the Season 5 Bellator Middleweight Tournament boasted three finishes out of the four quarterfinal matches.

Bryan Baker put an exclamation point on a sensational night of fights and turned in a stellar performance against Season 1 Middleweight Tournament Finalist Jared Hess. Both men were committed to takedowns but Baker was able to outwork Hess on the mat. Baker secured two anaconda chokes and attempted a rear naked choke more than once, but in the end it was an exciting ground and pound finish by Baker who sunk in his hooks from rear mount and flattened out Hess until there was no escape from his ground assault.

Alexander Shlemenko showed that he is a complete mixed martial artist and used a standing guillotine choke to submit Zelg Galesic at 1:55 of the first round and as a result will advance to the semifinals of the tournament.

Bryan Rogers defeated Victor O’Donnell by ground and pound as well, but it was a questionable stoppage after Rogers dropped his opponent with a head kick and a barrage of punches. The straight right was the shot that put O’Donnell down and after a number of unanswered punches the referee ran right in to waive a stop to the contest.

In the closest fight of the night, Vitor Vianna edged Sam Alvey by split decision. Alvey opened a cut on Vianna and landed a number of jabs and leg kicks, but Vianna controlled the pace and the judges eventually awarded the Brazilian the victory.

The competition will only get tougher as Baker, Shlemenko, Rogers and Vianna advance to the semifinals. All of these men are working for a shot at reigning Bellator Middleweight Champion Hector Lombard. The semifinals will feature Rogers taking on Shlemenko, and Baker meeting Vianna.

“We saw some great finishes tonight from some very exciting Middleweights,” said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney. “Shlemenko’s first round finish shows his spectacular striking game now has a submission companion and Brian Rogers again, looked very, very explosive.”

Bellator Fighting Championships will return next Saturday, September 24 as Bellator 51 comes to the Canton Civic Center in Ohio for the first leg of the Bellator Bantamweight Tournament. Fans can look forward to current featherweight champion Joe Warren taking on the undefeated Alexis Vila as he drops down to 135 pounds and attempts to become the first person in history to hold two Bellator titles at the same time.

Floyd Mayweather Extends His Record To 42-0; Gives Ortiz A Lesson Out Of Million Dollar Baby

Posted on | September 17, 2011 | No Comments

By: Rich Bergeron

All’s fair in love and war. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. recovered from a foul late in the 4th round against Victor Ortiz and hit his opponent twice when he had his hands at his waist to end the fight as Referee Joe Cortez stared into the crowd.

The much-anticipated fight was just starting to turn into a war. For the first three frames Floyd took control with an untouchable defense and an unstoppable offense. Ortiz blazed into action late in the 4th, but with just under :30 left in the round things began to get dicey. Mayweather taught Ortiz a lesson taken right out of the movie “Million Dollar Baby,” but without the resulting paralysis.

The cardinal rule of boxing is “protect yourself at all times.” No matter what routine a particular ref goes through to start a fight between two boxers, the spiel typically includes that dire piece of advice. Ortiz let his frustration get the better of him as he bulled Mayweather into a corner and headbutted him in the chin to start the snowball of controversy rolling toward an avalanche. Cortez took a point from Ortiz and restarted the fight. The ref looked away as the two fighters did the kiss and make up routine with a brief center-ring embrace. Ortiz hugged low, and when he retreated back a step, Mayweather hit him with a left hook and right-hand combo. If it was tackle football, Mayweather would have been hit with a penalty and a fine for launching at a defenseless receiver. Since it was boxing, there’s no instant replay that can reverse the call. Love it or hate it, the win counts.

Mayweather relied on cunning trickery to end the fight early, but he was well on his way to dominating the fight before the final seconds of the fourth round unfolded. Questioned aggressively after the fight by HBO Analyst Larry Merchant, Floyd unleashed his verbal fury on the aging commentator. Mayweather exhibited some patience in answering early questions but flipped out late in the session and dismissed Merchant after suggesting HBO should fire him. “You don’t know shit about boxing,” Mayweather bellowed at one point. Merchant wished out loud that he was 50 years younger so he could kick Floyd’s ass.

Just as the drama of the 24/7 series opened the introduction to this fight with a major episode, the fight that resulted from all the hype ended in the same wave of reality-is-stranger-than-fiction style. Floyd at least was gracious enough to offer Ortiz a rematch if he wants it. Ortiz did connect with a variety of hard punches to the head and a few ringing body shots, but Floyd let him know nothing Ortiz could throw would hurt him. For most of the fight it was the walk in the park Mayweather promised it would be.

Mayweather’s never-stop attack was key to the victory. He fought like a heavyweight. At times he looked like a vintage George Foreman using Archie Moore’s patented defensive style relying on covering the belly with one arm and the head and chest with the other. He looked like Roy Jones, Jr. as he slipped the best punches thrown by Ortiz and ducked behind a raised shoulder to keep his head out of range. Floyd’s jab was in full effect in this fight, and he showed flashes of a prime James Toney in that respect. He also adopted aspects of Mike Tyson’s infamous peek-a-boo style, particularly when he wanted to throw a potent left hook. The starching overhand right thrown by Floyd hearkened back to Rocky Marciano’s Suzy Q. He painted a masterpiece up to the point when all Hell broke loose.

As wild and crazy as the finish to this fight was, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. made it into his own personal chess match. He lulled his opponent into a false sense of security and checkmated him viciously with two blinding back-to-back moves. Ortiz left his king unprotected and paid the price. It happens. Is it a cheap way to win a fight? Most certainly. But, it was also cheap for Ortiz to corner and headbutt Mayweather. The underdog champion was just starting to show some promise when he resorted to dirty tricks, and he found out that Floyd knows all the dirty tricks in the book. You can’t blame Floyd for responding with an eye for an eye mentality, and in the wake of the fight Ortiz didn’t blame Floyd, either.

Looking at the way Floyd performed in this fight there’s no excuse to put off a fight with Manny Pacquiao. Both sides seem more willing than ever to negotiate, and there’s no doubt that this controversy will only fuel the raging fire consuming the boxing fan base screaming for this fight to finally happen.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Must Fight Through Ortiz To Meet Pacquiao in 2012

Posted on | September 17, 2011 | No Comments

By: Rich Bergeron

Putting all the drama aside, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will be tested tonight by a relentless young challenger and champion. Victor Ortiz will come to fight, but Floyd’s undefeated record seems to say it all. This is one many experts and fans see differently, though. The polls and predictions I’ve seen so far lean heavily toward Ortiz taking his title home with him.

Our own Tony “The Tornado” Penecale crunches the numbers and analyzes the skills and stats of each fighter to come up with Floyd as a knockout winner. I look back to Floyd’s last fight in the moments before the first bell. Floyd Senior leaned over in the corner and whispered something into Floyd’s ear, and the son nodded at the father and went to work. It was his most aggressive performance of his career in many respects. I barely ever saw him take a step back against Shane Mosley last May. He will have to top that show of sheer will tonight to win against a hungry Victor Ortiz.

Floyd also faces more pressure to win. During his open workout interviews (see some of the workout footage below and HERE) “Money” repeatedly thanked the media for keeping him “relevant.” Should he somehow manage to wind up on the losing end of this fight, Floyd might not be so relevant anymore. Instead, he’ll be relegated to playing second fiddle to fighters like Amir Khan and Manny Paquiao. Floyd simply has more to fight for even though it’s Ortiz who has the strap around his waist coming into this bout. This is a legacy fight for Floyd, a battle to prove he can beat them young and old in the boxing ring.

A win tonight paves the way for Pacquiao and Mayweather to belly up to the negotiation table and nail down a fight deal. As long as Pac-Man’s November showdown with Juan Manuel Marquez goes according to plan, these two phenoms are ripe to face each other now or forever hold their peace. These superstars are at the precipice where 2012 is the year they will either face off or face retirement with open questions as to who would have won if they had fought.

Floyd is in a must-win situation. Ortiz is in position to score the upset of the century.

Is Floyd’s 0 about to go, or will Ortiz be on the “Money?”

Tune in tonight to find out. My bet is on Floyd’s record staying unblemished with his 42nd victory in a row.
