Theophane And Williams Co-Headline At York Hall On 18th September

Posted on | September 6, 2011 | No Comments

Miranda Carter  and Bruce Baker have joined forces to co-promote their first event of the new season, ‘Great Expectations’, at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Sunday 18th September 2011

Miranda and Bruce, along with Matchmaker Jim Evans, have put together a mouth watering fight card, co-headlined by British Light Welterweight Champion Ashley ‘Treasure’ Theophane and Southern Area Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams.

Finchley’s Theophane, comes into this fight fresh off a sensational tenth round knockout win over Jason Cook, on the first defense of his title at Wembley back in July.

Streatham’s Williams is also coming off a first title defense knockout win, this time a fourth round KO of Danny Couzens, back in May. On September 18th the Johnny Eames managed and co-trained ‘Solid’ will be facing super tough ‘Fighting Fireman’ Nick Okoth from Battersea.

Heading up the support sees William’s TRAD TKO Gym mate, the sensational Mark Tibbs trained Light Middleweight prospect, Nathan ‘Sugar’ Weise steps up to the plate against Woodford’s Duncan Cottier.

Unbeaten Brixton Heavyweight Ian Lewis, another big hitting knockout artist, will be back in action, against a yet to be named opponent.

Another youngster from Johnny Eames’ TRAD TKO stable of thoroughbreds, Belvedere’s exciting featherweight prospect ‘Saint’ George Jupp, gets his first outing since the highly controversial loss to Raffi Khan back in March. At ‘Great Expectations’ young George will be taking on awkward Welsh southpaw Chuck Jones.

Mitcham’s Danny ‘Cassius’ Connor will be keen to continue his winning ways. The Alec Wilkey coached Welterweight has really turned his career around this year, having notched up two excellent wins over Duane Grimes and Danny Dontchev before the summer break.

A pair of the Capital’s upcoming young Middleweights, Diego Burton and Dalton Miller are both keen to get their first wins of the new season under their belts, as will Light Welter Ideh Ockuku.

Finally, making their debut on the 18th will be Billericay Welterweight Luke ‘Lights Out’ Fowler and Lightweight Francis Maina.

The Miranda Carter and Bruce Baker co-promoted ‘Great Expectations’ takes place at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Sunday 18th September 2011. Doors open at 2pm and the first bout is at 3pm.

Tickets for ‘Great Expectations’ are on sale now – priced £35 (Unreserved) or £65 (Ringside), book on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at The TRAD TKO Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA. For further information please call 07960 850645.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER TAKES TIME OUT OF TRAINING SCHEDULE TO SKYPE WITH TROOPS IN AFGHANISTAN

Posted on | September 5, 2011 | No Comments

9-17-11 HBO Final1

“God bless you, thank you for fighting for this country… the red white and blue, there’s nothing better than this country, America – you guys are great, thank you so much… from the bottom of my heart.”

– Floyd Mayweather

Las Vegas, NV (Sept. 5)… While Americans were preparing to celebrate the Labor Day holiday this past Friday, our troops overseas who work tirelessly to protect our country, received a virtual visit from another hard working individual. In recognition of their bravery and dedication, boxing’s biggest star, Floyd Mayweather, busy training for his September 17 championship fight against Victor Ortiz, took the time early Friday morning in Las Vegas (2:00 a.m. PT, 2:00 p.m. AFT) to Skype with the Soldiers of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Task Force Duke at Forward Operating Base Salerno in Khowst Province, Afghanistan. Mayweather spoke to the troops for almost two hours, answering questions and delighting the group with a special tour of the “Big Boy” mansion.

“When the troops asked me to Skype with them, I was honored to say yes,” said Mayweather. “They are over there sacrificing everything for me, my family and our country’s freedom. I know I am training hard for my fight against Victor Ortiz, but their dedication and the training they go through to protect us is the biggest championship fight of them all.”

Below please find a story and photos posted on the Defense Video & Imagery Distribution System (a 24 hour news service for military serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain) written by Maj. Travis Dettmer. Dettmer was on hand for the Skype session.

Note: A special thank you to Spc. John Martinez for working tirelessly to arrange the Skype session. His story about the chat can be found on Box Score World Sportswire by clicking HERE.

KHOWST PROVINCE, Afghanistan – “I know what it takes, I’ve been there before,” world-renowned boxing champion Floyd Mayweather told Soldiers of 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Task Force Duke at Forward Operating Base Salerno via Skype Sept. 2. He was responding to a question from one Soldier about his game plan to defeat Victor Ortiz, current World Boxing Council welterweight champion, in their upcoming title fight scheduled for Sept. 17.

“Do you see the age difference as a threat?” asked Houston, Texas, native U.S. Army Sgt. Josh Bova, a field artillery non-commissioned officer from Battery A, 1st Battalion, 6th Field Artillery Regiment, referring to the fact that Ortiz, a southpaw from Ventura, Calif., is 10 years younger than Mayweather.

“The age difference between me and Victor Ortiz, I’m not worried about that at all,” responded Mayweather. “I have a lot of experience; I’ve been places in the sport of boxing, in the square circle, that he’s never been before.”

Mayweather further explained that today’s fighters are no better than the fighters he fought early on in his career.

“The competition hasn’t gotten any tougher. The fighters today are not throw-back fighters. Once I get to beating these guys and I take the lead, these guys go into survival mode,” said the five-time WBC champion.

With a record of 41-0, including 25 knock-outs, since entering the professional boxing realm in 1996, it’s easy to see where Mayweather derives his confidence. Speaking from his home in Las Vegas, and with the crew from HBO’s Mayweather 24/7 series filming in the background,
the prize fighter enthusiastically engaged the group of 17 soldiers, mostly boxing enthusiasts, just weeks before his much-anticipated championship bout.

Spc. John Martinez, a field artillery specialist assigned to the Headquarters, Headquarters Battery, 1st Bn, 6th FA Regt., is credited for organizing the event. The Austin, Texas native, who joined the Army on a two-year enlistment in 2010, is a respected boxing expert and writer who has interviewed many of the sport’s top fighters and continues to write a regular boxing column for Boxscore World Sportswire, even from Afghanistan.

Using his connections in the world of professional boxing, Martinez secured some time on Mayweather’s busy training schedule for a conversation with deployed soldiers. This was the first of its kind for both Mayweather and the soldiers of TF Duke.

Although their Skype session was focused mainly on his fight with Ortiz, which is scheduled to air on HBO Pay-Per View, there were plenty of other questions from the soldiers in attendance.

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Terry Waddington, a Rockford, Ill., native and radar weapons specialist from 1st Bn, 6th FA Regt.; and who plans to try out for the All-Army Boxing team upon redeployment; asked for some training pointers.

“How many times a week do you recommend doing bag training?” asked Waddington.

“It all depends on how your body feels, you got to work according to how your body feels,” said Mayweather. “When I was beating these fighters early on in my career… I trained, but I didn’t train as hard as I train now because, you know, on the plateau that I’m on I know everyone is gunning for me,” he said.

“What about running?” asked Waddington.

“At least five times a week… sometimes I run outside, sometimes I run on the treadmill, and when I run on the treadmill, its only uphill,” responded Mayweather, who was careful to also emphasize the need tobalance training with adequate recovery time.

“Tuesday I boxed 12 rounds, so I knew I didn’t want to run when I got home [in order to] let myself recover,” he added. “I’m in tip-top shape, but basically, you’ve got to know your limits.”

U.S. Army Pfc. Christopher Holton, a field artillery specialist assigned to HHB, 1st Bn. 6th FA Regt., and native of Mount Pleasant, Mich.,conveyed his respect for the fact that Mayweather maintains near his fighting weight year-round and asked how he motivates himself to stay that way.

“It’s part of being responsible and having discipline. The sky is not the limit, I believe there is no limit,” Mayweather explained. “My Uncle Roger Mayweather [told me this from the beginning]. When you get into the sport of boxing, it’s a lifetime commitment, why not be
responsible?” he said.

He went on to compare his discipline to that of the soldiers in attendance. “You know, you guys are out there [fighting] in 120 degree weather so, if you guys can make [that] sacrifice, why can’t Floyd Mayweather make a sacrifice?” he stated.

Inevitably the conversation came back around to Victor Ortiz. More than one Soldier, knowing Mayweather had experienced some trouble with southpaw fighters in the past, asked how he planned to deal with this fact in Ortiz. His answer was in keeping with how he answered that same question in an episode of “Face Off with Max Kellerman”, which aired recently in Afghanistan on the Armed Forces Network.

“It comes with the territory, what can I say? A good fighter has to be able to take a shot,” said Mayweather. “You gotta kill me, [or] I’m gonna keep coming.”

Not one to reserve the spotlight just for himself, Mayweather was sure to convey his appreciation for the soldiers in attendance.

“God bless you, thank you for fighting for this country… the red, white and blue, there’s nothing better than this country, America. You guys are great, I love you guys, thank you so much… from the bottom of my heart,” he said, before hinting toward a possible visit to Afghanistan in the future after his fight with Ortiz.

“Hopefully after this fight, I can come over there and put on some exhibitions for you guys,” a notion that was received with enthusiastic applause from the soldiers.

Before that can happen, however, Mayweather is focused on taking the title from Ortiz. As to his prospects against the younger fighter, Mayweather himself perhaps answered it best on Face Off.

“They put 41 in front of me, 41 came up short,” said Mayweather.

Premier Sports Ink Six Fight TV Deal With Spencer Fearon’s Hard Knocks Boxing Promotions

Premier Sports have signed a broadcast deal with Spencer Fearon and Ciaran Baynes’ Hard Knocks Boxing Promotions for six events, starting with their October 7th York Hall Super Show ‘This Is Hard Knocks’ which will be headlined by Mongolia’s two time World Featherweight Champion Choi Tseveenpürev.

The dynamic duo’s commitment to featuring genuine 50/50 match-ups throughout their fight cards, which constantly produces leading ‘Fight of the Year’ contenders, is almost certainly the reason that Premier Sports came banging on the Hard Knocks office door just days after the massively successful, sensationally exciting ‘Summer Smash’ event.

On making the official announcement Spencer said, “Yeah, we’ve got a fantastic deal with Premier Sports, people are buying into the Hard Knocks brand. It’s a six fight deal, which can be extended to more than that.

I’m really pleased to be involved with Premier.

The thing is they approached us, it’s really cool because like they’ve seen the hype we’re getting right now. A lot of press and stuff, so I’m really, really grateful for every news writer who actually believed in me.

Steve Bunce predicted this about a year and half ago and now it’s come to fruition.

The first guy to publicly scream this out, was in the Sun newspaper a few years ago, was Colin Hart and Claude Abrahams of Boxing News he put out a big piece that I was promoting.

This means a lot to me, I mean when people are coming up to me and saying how fantastic our shows are. So when people like you Rio, you’ve been in boxing a long time. People like you, people like Jim McDonald, people like Steve Bunce and people like Steve Lillis say that I’m the man that can, it really says it all and TV had to come on board.

Everyone knows that to promote is to sell something and it’s no good selling rubbish, you’ve got to sell the best product, you know what I mean. All these other guys can have a load of money and the rest of it, but they can’t beat my atmosphere, you know what I mean.

Now everyone is screaming about 50/50 fights. Other guys are screaming that they want to do 50/50 fights so everyone is cottoning on. So the fact that I have been pioneering it.

Now everyone is looking at me, I’m raising my game, yeah I did it first, now everyone wants to do it, which is cool as we’ll get rid of the garbage and the sport will grow. Now you’re going to get guys that want to fight each other on other shows, just like they always have on Hard Knocks shows.”

An announcement will be made later this week detailing the full lineup for Hard Knocks Boxing Promotions ‘This Is Hard Knocks’ event, which will be headlined by Choi Tseveenpürev, that takes place at York Hall, Bethnal Green, on Friday 7th October 2011.

Tickets for ‘This Is Hard Knocks’ – priced £35 (Unreserved) and £60 (Ringside), will be available later this week on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at The TRAD TKO Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA. For further information please call 07960 850645.
