Tyson’s World Class Gamble

TYSON’S WORLD CLASS GAMBLEKing’s Hall, Belfast, 17th September

London (5, Sept 2011) Tyson Fury says he will battle with North American champion Nicolai Firthaat Belfast’s King’s Hall on September 17 because he wants to give the Irish fans a night to remember.

The 12 round international contest will be shown live on Channel 5.

British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Fury could have fought lesser men but instead he faces the 32-year-old from Ohio who two fights ago went the distance with the new WBA World heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin who recently won his title with a points win overRuslan Chagaev.

Firtha won the NABA title in 2010 after stopping Tony Grano in two rounds and since then he has been in the form of his life, his most recent victory coming on 13th August in Ohio and he has warned Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy that he is ready to halt the Fury bandwagon.

Unbeaten Fury says he is taking “a bit of gamble” against 6ft 6′ Firtha but is ready to handle what he expects to be the biggest challenge of his career. Fury says, “There was a lot of talk about me fighting Martin Rogan and a few other names like Mike Perez and Leif Larsen were mentioned but I’ve accepted to fight Firtha who’s a lot younger than Rogan and has mixed in a lot higher company than any of those other guys.

“With two weeks to go I know this is a risk, a gamble but I’m a true fighting man and a man of honour and I’m prepared to fight any man on the planet and I want the Irish fight fans to come out and see a real fight not some knock over job.

“Anybody who knows anything about boxing can see that this is a risky fight because Firtha has gone the distance with the man who now holds the WBA belt which David Haye once held. It’s going to be a big test for me so soon after me beating Dereck Chisora but I know it’s a challenge that I can rise to.”

Promoter Mick Hennessy expects Firtha to bring out the best in Fury and says a win will help Fury’s stock rise even further on the world scene.

Hennessy commented: “Firtha is always in great shape, he’s coming off the back of a good win and a very good performance against Povetkin the WBA champion so it’s going to be real test for Tyson but I believe in Tyson and that’s why I’m prepared to put him in with such an opponent.

“Although the fight has been agreed with just over two weeks to go, the Firtha camp have known about the possibility of this fight for some time. We had been looking at the Rogan fight but when that fell through then we looked to make the Firtha fight. Tyson’s profile in America is on the rise and a win against Firtha will only help that.

the King’s Hall with former WBC Champion Junior Witterfighting current Irish welterweight champion Stephen Haughian and Ryan Greene and Willie Thompson who will be fighting it out for the vacant Northern Ireland Light Middleweight title”.

Also Joining these fighters at the King’s Hall will be a host of talented boxers including Kid Galahad, Phill Fury, Tommy Tolan, Phil Townley and former British title challenger Kevin O’Hara who is looking to get his career back on track.

An Evening With Joe Calzaghe Saturday October 8th

Posted on | September 5, 2011 | No Comments

Former Super Featherweight World Champion turned promoter Carl Greaves presents the opportunity for boxing fans to spend an evening with one of the greatest British boxers of all time – undisputed Super Middleweight World Champion Joe Calzaghe – at the Cedric Ford Pavilion, Newark Showground, Newark, Nottingham on Saturday 8th October.

For those attending there will be plenty to talk with Joe about, as during his magnificent career Joe not only won the WBO World Crown, after beating Chris Eubank at the Sheffield Arena on 11th October 1997, but went on to successfully defend the belt no less than twenty one times. He also secured all the IBF, WBC and WBA to become the coveted Ring Magazine Champion.

On the 4th March 2006 Joe added the IBF belt to his collection, after sensationally beating previously unbeaten Champion Jeff Lacy.

A couple of defenses followed and then in November 2007 Joe faced Mikkel Kessler at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Joe put his WBO title on the line and Kessler the WBA and WBC belts. After twelve magnificent rounds big Joe became the possessor of all the major belts.

Joe rounded out his career with two super fights, the first against Bernard Hopkins and for his final professional bout took on Roy Jones Jnr.

After forty six fights, and forty six wins, Joe hung up his gloves and in doing so entered the record books yet again, as only the fourth European to retire as an undefeated World Champion, the others being Terry Marsh, Michael Loewe and Sven Ottke. He also become one of only three undisputed and undefeated World Champions, Rocky Marciano and Ricardo Lopez being the other two.

As mentioned earlier Joe defended his WBO World Crown twenty one times, but most amazingly he held that title for an unbelievable one hundred and thirty one and half months. He not only possessed the Ring Magazine belt for thirty months but also was a two time Ring Magazine title holder, having also won the Ring belt at Light Heavyweight on his beating Bernard Hopkins in his penultimate fight and defended against Roy Jones Jnr.

On the 8th October those lucky enough to attend will get the chance to not only have a chat with Joe but will also be treated to a four course meal and a photo opportunity with him.

There will also be an auction of Sporting memorabilia, a raffle, as well as entertainment, comprising of a comedian and singer Liam Moore, the winner of Stars In Your Eyes as Phil Collins.

An Evening With Joe Calzaghe will be held at the Cedric Ford Pavilion, Newark Showground, Newark, Nottinghamshire on Saturday the 8th October.

Ticket prices:
Gold £100-00 – Doors open 6:30pm – Champagne reception
Silver £75.00 – Doors open 7:00pm – Champagne reception
Bronze £60.00 – Doors open 7:30pm. Meals served 8:00pm

For tickets for this not to be missed opportunity to meet one of Boxing’s all time greats book on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com.

Last night at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, NABA Featherweight champion Luis “Orlandito” Del Valle (14-0, 11 KOs) continued his march up the world rankings by stopping Kenya’s Anthony Napunyi at 1:12 of the third round.

Fighting on the Zaveck vs. Berto undercard, Del Valle’s relentless precision attack, punctuated by a sharp right hand, dropped the African veteran. He rose but was rendered helpless by the follow-up barrage and was rescued

orlandito_posingby the referee.

“I’m very excited about the victory,” said the 24-year-old dynamo, post-fight. “The work I have implemented in the gym with my team paid off.”

Before the fight, Del Valle had expressed awareness of the African’s considerable strength. “Napunyi was heavy and very strong and that was the main reason why we started working the body hard in the fight. In the third round, I used his force against him and connected with the right and knocked him out, “said Del Valle.

“We were accurate in the fight, attacking the body from every possible angle until Orlandito could catch him with a fastball on the jaw and finish the fight,” said Raymond Rivera, trainer and manager of Del Valle.

The undefeated puncher from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, will meet with his management and promotional duo of Gary Shaw Productions and DiBella Entertainment in the coming days, to jointly decide the next move.

Gary Shaw Productions/ACE Boxing Sign Australian Future Star Joel Brunker to Promotional Agreement

Gary Shaw of Gary Shaw Productions is proud to announce the he and elite Australian boxing promoter Angelo Di Carlo of ACE Boxing Promotions have signed a co-promotional agreement with 25-year-old Sydney, Australia, featherweight Joel Brunker.

Brunker (20-0, 13 KOs) is the current WBO Oriental Featherweight Champion and ranked #6 in the world by the WBO. He won the vacant Australian Title by shutting out Ernie Gonzales and defended it twice before moving on to win the WBO Youth World Title in September 2010 against Carlos Lopez.

As an amateur, Brunker went 106-19 while competing in the 2004 Olympics; he was also the NSW Championship six times, the Australian Champion four times and won gold medals at the Arafura and Oceania Games.

He caught Shaw’s eye recently on the undercard of IBF Middleweight Champion Daniel Geale’s victory over Eromosele Albert at the Derwent Entertainment Centre in Tasmania. Fighting in front of 5000 of his countrymen, Brunker scored a hard-fought decision over Reynaldo Belandres of the Philippines.

“I was so impressed with him,” admitted Shaw. “He was in a very tough fight, but you could see he’s going to be a top featherweight and will soon be a world champion. It was a tremendous victory for Joel and I’m very happy to be working with him and with my co-promotional partner Angelo Di Carlo.”

Shaw says that he and Di Carlo will give the fighter a week off and then sit down and plot their next move, which will involve steady movement up the world rankings.

Shaw Congratulates Armenian Hero Darchinyan for Landmark Victory

Gary Shaw of Gary Shaw Productions wishes to congratulate IBO bantamweight champion Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan (37-3-1, 27 KOs) for his dominant 12-round victory over Evans Mbamba (18-2, 9 KOs) at the Karen Demirchyan Sports Complex in Yerevan, Armenia, on Saturday.

Fighting as a professional for the first time in his native Armenia (in the first-ever professional boxing event ever held in the country), Darchinyan delighted over 12,000 screaming fans by battering the iron-jawed African for the duration of the contest.

The judges’ scores were 120-107 on two cards and 119-107 on the third.

“Vic is a superstar on the level of The Beatles in his homeland,” said Shaw, his proud promoter. “On the morning of the fight, he asked for Gatorade, which they don’t have in Armenia, and someone drove three hours just to get some for him. In fact, the President of the country was at the fight!”

In defeating Mbamba, Darchinyan successfully defended the IBO Bantamweight Championship he won by knocking out former IBF champ Yonnhy Perez in five rounds last April. He also maintains the mandatory WBA #1 position.

“From the day I started working with him, Vic has always wanted to fight in his homeland and I’m very happy he finally got that opportunity,” Shaw continued. “He’s a great champion and he’s been a terrific ambassador for Armenia and it’s just a great story to have the country’s number-one hero finally fight at home.”

Shaw says an announcement will be made shortly about Darchinyan’s next move.

Mayweather breaks from training to spend time with US Troops in Afghanistan

While in the midst of busily training for his upcoming bout with Mexican powerhouse and WBC Welterweight title-holder Victor Ortiz (29-2-22KO), the undefeated six-time world champion of five weight classes, Floyd Mayweather Jr (41-0, 25KO), temporarily set aside his preparations holding a candid, yet lighthearted, Skype session on Friday with United States Soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

Despite his training schedule, Mayweather Jr. found the time to hold nearly two-hour discussion in which he appeared relaxed, confident, and in good humor prior to his September 17 HBO PPV fight.

“God bless you, thank you for fighting for this country… the red white and blue, there’s nothing better than this country, America – you guys are great, thank you so much… from the bottom of my heart.” Continuing, “You know, you guys are out there [fighting] in 120 degree weather so, if you guys can make [that] sacrifice, why can’t Floyd Mayweather make a sacrifice?” asked the Michigan born boxer to the Soldiers of mostly 1st Battalion 6th Field Artillery HHB “Hellions”(Task Force Centaur) and other Soldiers of Task Force Duke.

He was cordial and humorous even when he gave the deployed warriors a tour of the “Big Boi” Mansion. “Hey, y’all need anything? Let me show you house.” And with that, the Soldiers were granted a VIP tour of a dwelling that puts other people’s homes on an episode of Cribs to shame. From the built in waterfall to the large screen television hidden behind a picture to the closet that is a home within itself, Floyd proved that he lives his moniker, “Money.”

When Floyd finally discussed his upcoming showdown for the WBC welterweight title, he dismissed the punching power and chances of Ortiz with a laugh and a flash of a smile.

“Ortiz? Ha. Its gonna be easy work -like taking candy to a baby. I’m not worried about him at all, I have a lot of experience and I’ve been places in the sport [boxing] he will [probably] never go in his career.”

One Soldier asking Mayweather why so many of his fights have gone the distance at this stage of his career? Floyd responded by laying blame on the foe not wanting to engage him in a fisticuff scrap.

“It’s like y’all, one shot can end it all.”

Continuing he explained, “Once I get to beating these guys and I take the lead, these guys go into survival mode. They try to say they went the distance with Floyd Mayweather instead of trying to go for the victory. You have fighters that will just settle and be happy that way. You know, you have fighters like Shane [Mosley] who hit me with a good shot. I bit down like a true champion and I kept fighting and what did Shane do? He went into survival mode. When I was beating [Juan Manual] Marquez, his corner could have easily stopped the fight but what did he do? He went into survival mode, so there’s nothing I can do. And when I faced Oscar De La Hoya, he chose to be the heavyweight gloves, he chose the weight class, so they are always putting me in a no-win situation, so, you know, all these guys work together. I’m a one-man Army. You know, you have all these guys working with certain promoters, and like I said before, I’m the trainer, the promoter, and the fighter.”

Despite a 16-month layoff, Floyd’s trip back into the ring promises to be  an event, victory, or both. His prowess is second to none. His defense is “impregnable,” but more importantly, like many others hypothesize, it seems like a tune up for bigger things.

“I’m working on the biggest contract ever!” he exclaimed. “Y’all know who it is.” To the delight of the packed room, Floyd began simulating the act of tying a tourniquet around his arm and pretending as though he was injecting a syringe into his veins.

“Poochiao (Manny Pacquiao) don’t want this. You know,” he claimed. With Pacquiao supporters amongst the gathered troops, Floyd exclaimed, “He can’t say nothing. He’s getting my left overs. I beat them [Manny’s biggest named conquests] all way before he got to them. What’s he gonna say? I beat them in their prime and when they still had something to give. I got ’em first.”

When another Soldier questioned him on how he stays motivated, Floyd stood up in front of the camera, pulled 100 dollar bills from his pant pocket, numbering in the seemingly thousands, and flushed the screen with what could only be “chump change” to the world class fighter and entertainer. He described himself this way, “There’s talented and then there’s gifted. I’m God gifted. It doesn’t matter who they put in front of me. Others have been knocked down and lost.“

As the soon to be seven-time world champion ended his time with the troops, he did offer his political views on the conflict in Afghanistan.

“Everytime we get someone new in the White House, they always say they’re gonna bring you (Servicemen and women) home; well it’s time to bring y’all home. You know what I’d do? I’d be buying jets and sending them over there to pick you all up, that’s what I’d do. Gotta send the jets over there to pick y’all up and bring y’all back home.”

With all the bravado and swagger that only an undefeated fighter can possess, Floyd Mayweather showed he is more than just a self-promoting boxer. He proved he was a supporter of the troops and offered to put on an exhibition – meet-and-greet for the Servicemembers of FOB Salerno, Afghanistan after he makes “easy work” of Oritz and prior to his “biggest contract ever” against whom he hints is ”Poochiao.”

Note: The Salerno Skype Session between the Soldiers and Floyd Mayweather Jr. would not have been possible without the sincere dedication, hard work, and cooperation of Kelly Swanson and Leonard Ellerbe. And a special thanks to Floyd for taking the time to answer questions from some of those who are currently serving in Afghanistan.
