The seven-time world champion Mayweather was honored to make the donation. “I think the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization does a great job raising money for a cure for breast cancer and I hope my donation allows them to continue to do this outstanding work.”

Stephanie Kirby, Executive Director of Susan G. Top Welterweight Prospects to Meet Again at Patriot Center

Fairfax, Va. (January 19, 2012) – On the heels of their riveting first fight last month, top regional welterweight prospects, Richie “The Rock” Andrews (2-0-3) and Juan “Savior” Rodriguez (4-1-1, 4 KOs), will square off again in a four-round rematch as part of the Jimmy Lange Boxing card returning to the Patriot Center on February 11, 2012.  Tickets for the event, sponsored by Valcourt Building Services, start at $35 and can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets including the Patriot Center Box office.

Training out of the Staunton Boxing Club, Andrews, 20, has gone the distance in all of his five bouts to date.  The Stuarts Draft, Va. boxer handed Rodriguez his first loss by way of four-round decision on December 17, 2011 at MCCS Henderson Hall in Arlington, Va.  The two warriors proved worthy competitors with Rodriguez’s traditional stalking matched by Andrews’ slick boxing technique.  The crowd-pleasing fight was considered one of the beltway’s most spirited of 2011 with non-stop action from the opening bell.

Rodriguez, 21, has fought three times at the Patriot Center, scoring a pair of first-round TKOs over Damien Butler and Dwartney Wortham, respectively, and drawing with Dontre King.  The hard-hitting Haymarket, Va. fighter whose parents came from El Salvador trains in Falls Church, Va. at Olympia Boxing Center.

The action-packed, seven-bout card is headlined by local favorite Jimmy Lange defending his WBU junior middleweight title against Ruben Galvan in the Main Event. Mike “No Joke” Stewart battles Joe Wyatt for the vacant WBU welterweight belt, while WBC middleweight champion Tori “Sho Nuff” Nelson of Ashburn, Va., facesVashon “Lady V” Living for the vacant WIBA women’s middleweight crown. Chantilly, Va. junior middleweightZain “Tiger” Shah will face his toughest test to date with highly regarded “Lightning” Harry Joe Yorgey, and junior welterweight Todd “White Lightning” Wilson of Fairfax, Va., goes for his 12th win against Fernando “The Whip” Basora. A heavyweight battle between pro debuting Duane Mobley of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Dennis Benson of Norfolk, Va. is also scheduled.

Doors will open at 6:00 pm, with the first fight scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm.  All bouts are subject to change.

Crystal Lake’s Curran seeks World Title as he faces Joe Warren In front of hometown crowd on March 9

Bellator Featherweight Tournament winner faces champion Warren at Hammond’s Horseshoe

CHICAGO, Ill. (1/19/12) — Bellator Season 5 Featherweight Tournament winner Pat Curran stands one win away from realizing his dream. After a brilliant 3-0 tournament run, it was a lightning-fast kick to the head of Marlon Sandro in the final that propelled the 24-year-old rising super star from top prospect to top contender (Watch Here:http://bit.ly/qKvQ5m).

Now the contender will get his well-deserved World title shot.

The Chicago-based Bellator Fighting Championships heads back to the Chicago area as Crystal Lake, Illinois’ own Pat Curran (@PatCurranMMA) will take on current Bellator Featherweight Champion “The Baddest Man on the Planet” Joe Warren (@JoeWarrenMMA) LIVE from The Venue at The Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana on Friday, March 9. Tickets for this event go on sale at 10 a.m. CT on Friday, January 20 and are available at The Horseshoe Casino, Ticketmaster, www.thevenue-chicago.com, or by calling 1-800-745-3000. Tickets are priced from $42-$107.

The event will broadcast starting at 7 p.m. CT on MTV2 and in commercial-free HD on EPIX. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. CT, with the first fight scheduled for 6 p.m. CT. The preliminary card will be streamed LIVE and FREE around the world on Spike.com starting at 6 p.m. CT.

“Everything is falling into place right now,” Curran said. “My hometown is really close to where I’m fighting and I know I’ll have the support of my family and friends. This is something that is meant to be.”

Even though Curran admits he will have the “home-cage advantage” on March 9, the 24-year-old Crystal Lake native knows the challenge that is right in front of him.

“Even though he’s coming off a loss, he’s a very dangerous opponent,” Curran said of Warren. “He is a very strong wrestler who’s going to try to close the distance and work the clinch against me. I’m looking forward to a great fight.”

After a one-fight stint at Bantamweight, Joe Warren is back defending his Bellator Featherweight championship. Winner of his last five Featherweight fights, the 35-year-old Denver product has the experience and the cage savvy to bust up Curran’s homecoming party.

“The Midwest is known for great fighters and great fight fans,” Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney said. “To be hosting an event of this magnitude in our backyard is like Christmas morning; plus you get to see Chicagoland’s own, rising superstar Pat Curran vie for the World Title against one of the toughest fighters in all of MMA – Joe Warren. As a diehard MMA fan, I can’t wait for March 9th to get here at Horseshoe.”

Also on this big night in Hammond, the Season 6 Featherweight Tournament kicks off as Season 5 finalist Marlon Sandro (@351marlon) takes on Roberto Vargas (@RobertoVargas45). A member of the renowned Team Nova Uniao, the 19-3 Sandro is widely regarded as one of the top featherweights in the world. With seven of his 19 wins coming via KO/TKO and three by submission, don’t blink when the dangerous Brazilian enters the Bellator cage. A former wrestler at Cal-State Bakersfield, Vargas has used his wrestling pedigree and parlayed that success into a 12-1 mixed martial arts record with three knockouts and four submissions.

Born in Thailand and raised in England, the UK’s best featherweight Ronnie Mann (@RonnieMannMMA) has the talent and drive to make a deep run in this season’s tournament. A tenacious standup fighter with 10 submission victories on his record, the 20-4 fighter has possibly his toughest test to date when he takes on dangerous veteran Wagnney Fabiano (@wagnneyfabiano). The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and former WEC fighter holds an impressive 14-3 record and adds another true contender to this season’s featherweight tournament.

Top featherweight prospect Alexandre “PoPo” Bezerra(@Alexandre_popo) enters his first Bellator tournament and will face stiff competition in his quarterfinal matchup as the 12-1 submission ace battles fellow Brazilian Genair da Silva. “Junior PDQ” is coming off an impressive victory at Bellator 52, and will be looking to carry that momentum into the tournament on March 9

Daniel Straus (@DanielStraus) returns to the Bellator cage after nearly a year. Straus made a dominant run through the Season 4 Featherweight Tournament, only being stopped by eventual tournament Champion Patricio Pitbull (@PatricioPitbull) in the finals. When the Ohio native steps into the cage on March 9, it will be against the undefeated Jeremy Spoon (@JeremySpoon), who brings a spotless 12-0 record to the cage, including eight submission victories.

Vic Darchinyan vs. Shinsuke Yamanaka CONTRACT FINALIZED FOR WBC BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE

Posted on | January 19, 2012 | No Comments

Darchinyan-1
Photo by Bret “The Threat” Newton

New Jersey (January 19, 2012) – Seeking the best possible fights on the planed, former multiple world champion, Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan (37-4-1, 27 KOs) has finalized his negotiations to challenge Japan’s undefeated WBC bantamweight titlist, Shinsuke Yamanaka (15-0-2, 11 KOs).

Promoter Gary Shaw stated, “Contracts have been signed, sealed and delivered.  The fight is finalized and will take place in Tokyo, Japan sometime in April.  Nothing makes me more proud than having a throwback fighter like Darchinyan, who will take risks and step in the ring with anyone, anywhere.  Yamanaka will be defending his belt in his native land so Vic’s got to go in there and put it on him.  I believe Darchinyan’s power punching style will lead him to victory.”

Darchinyan, an elite fighter in the flyweight and super flyweight divisions went on to say, “I’m extremely pleased with the WBC’s decision to give me another title shot.  I’ve fought and defended the WBC title with honor and pride.  I love everything the WBC stands for because I believe they know I’m a true warrior and will leave everything in the ring when I go to battle.  My gratitude to José Sulaimánis everlasting because he’s always been there for me throughout my career. Capturing a world championship in three divisions has been a goal of mine since I won my first belt.  I know I have what it takes to be champion at bantamweight.”

Having traveled the globe from Australia to America and now Japan, Darchinyan must be recognized as one of boxing’s most respected fighters.  A Hall of Fame career is fast approaching should he continue his march toward a treasured third world title in as many divisions.

Shaw went on to say, “There’s no doubt about it, Vic is a future Hall of Famer.  In his era, he fought the best that was out there.  He’s never been in a boring fight.  His style has always been crowd pleasing and you’ll never see any quit in him, ever.   He’ll get my vote for the Hall of Fame when that time comes.  Vic’s got plenty of fight left in him and come April, you’ll know why he’s one of the best prize fighters of his time.”

In a quest to capture a world championship on foreign land, Darchinyan has a difficult task in front of him.  Most fighters at the elite level would never take that gamble.

Shaw continued, “You have to give Darchinyan a ton of credit for taking this fight in Japan.  Not many fighters will travel overseas to fight for a world title.  He’s given his heart and soul to this sport and I applaud the WBC for recognizing his soldier spirit.”
