RISING FEATHERWEIGHT STAR FREDDY ASSUNCAO SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH AGGRESSION MMA

Posted on | August 15, 2011 | No Comments

Description: cid:image003.jpg@01CC5B6C.F373CD30

Will make promotional debut at September event

Edmonton, Alberta (Canada): Aggression MMA, one of the top Canadian fight promotions in operation, today announced that it has signed talented Brazilian mixed martial arts (MMA) competitor Freddy Assuncao to a contract with the organization. A member of the famed Assuncao family of fighting brothers, Freddy has garnered a reputation in his young career for his submission wizardry and exciting fights. He hopes to continue to build on that rep in his new fighting home, where he will make his debut on September 16th at “Unfinished Business.”

“I’m very happy to sign with a promotion like Aggression,” says Assuncao. “It’ll definitely be a boost to my career, and I am very excited about that!”

“We are very excited to have added a fighter the caliber of Freddy to the Aggression stable of competitors,” states Aggression MMA Co-owner Moin Mirza. “We expect him to compete for our featherweight belt sooner rather than later.”

A native of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, Assuncao (4-1) made his pro debut in 2009. Fighting is in his blood, as evidenced by his brothers, Raphael and Junior, who are themselves accomplished MMA fighters. All three brothers train together outside Atlanta, Georgia at Ascension Mixed Martial Arts. Raphael is currently fighting for the UFC®, while Junior is a veteran of the UFC® has not tasted defeat since 2008. Freddy, the youngest brother, is coming off a submission victory over UFC®/WEC® vet Kit Cope, but has shown that he isn’t a one-trick pony, as evidenced by his evolving striking game. He is a prospect MMA fans need to keep an eye on, as the sky is the limit for this developing young star.

Assuncao’s first opponent in Aggression MMA is being determined, but whoever it is will certainly provide a stiff test for Assuncao.

Aggression recently announced that it is bringing back some of the top Canadian stars out there for its September 16th“Unfinished Business” fight event. Recent Bellator® signee Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford and multi-time UFC® competitor Tim “The Thrashing Machine” Hague will both be competing, as will fellow Canadian favorites Steve Beaumont, Rio Wells, and Nick Penner. In addition, the Aggression MMA featherweight title will be contested. The full fight card will be revealed shortly. Canadian fight fans won’t want to miss this incredible event!

Making a strong debut in front of his new Canadian fans is of the utmost importance to Freddy, and to the fans, he says, “Thanks for supporting the sport of MMA. I promise I’m going to give you guys a show!! My goal is to become the Aggression 145 lb. champion!”

“Freddy is a strong submission fighter, and whoever wins the featherweight belt on September 16th is going to have a very dangerous challenger waiting in the wings for his crack at the belt,” concludes Aggression MMA Co-owner Harvey Panesar. “I can’t wait to see how the 145 lb. division shakes out.”

Checkmate for Edwin ‘La Bomba’ Rodriguez; Undefeated Dominican boxer headlines Broadway Boxing show Sat. Night

Posted on | August 15, 2011 | No Comments

WORCESTER, Mass. (August 15, 2011) – Boxing is like chess for unbeaten Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez.

The 26-year-old Dominican Republic native, considered by many as the premier super middleweight prospect in the world, returns home Saturday night (Aug. 20) to headline a special edition of Broadway Boxing, presented by DiBella Entertainment, against intra-state rival and Iraq War veteran Chris Traietti (10-2, 6 KOs) at historic Mechanics Hall in Worcester (MA).

Rodriguez is a talented chess player who also has some great moves in the ring. “Chess and boxing are similar because you have to think of your moves ahead,” Rodriguez explained. “They’re both fast-paced. You have to be able to know your next move and do it fast. I love chess. You need to know what your next move is in a second and go for it. If your strategy isn’t working, like in boxing, you need to adjust by reacting quickly. Sometimes you set-up a move – I may sacrifice my horse, but I’m really baiting you, and you react to find yourself in a checkmate position. Checkmate is the knockout punch.”

The Lou DiBella-promoted Rodriguez (18-0, 13 KOs), reigning WBC USNBC title-holder, is presently rated among the top 13 by all major governing bodies in professional boxing: International Boxing Federation (#8), World Boxing Association (#9), World Boxing Council (#12) and World Boxing Organization (#13).

“Edwin’s always loved chess,” Rodriguez’ manager Larry Army added. “Because of that we’ve had a saying, ‘you’re playing chess and they’re all playing checkers.’His mind works like that in the ring, quickly reacting to his opponent’s move, and that’s why he’s been so successful.”

Rodriguez is an avid on-line chess player. If you’d like a chance to play Edwin in a game of chess, join-up for his free newsletter (go to www.edwinrodriguezboxing.com) and challenge him. Edwin will select a few opponents to play.

Edwin started boxing in 2001 and he developed into one of the top amateurs in the United States, compiling a solid 84-9 record that included gold-medal performances in the 2005 USA Boxing National Championships and 2006 U.S. National Golden Gloves Tournament. Rodriguez, who has dual citizenship in the U.S. and Dominican Republic, became the first Massachusetts boxer to win the middleweight title at the Nationals since “Marvelous”Marvin Hagler in 1973.

The Broadway Boxing co-feature showcases the return of former WBA junior middleweight champion Joachim Alcine (32-2, 19 KOs) vs. upset specialist Jose “Stinger” Medina (14-9-2, 6 KOs), also from Quincy. Also seeing action are two other boxers from Traietti’s hometown of Quincy – Rodriguez’ stable-mate junior lightweight Ryan “The Polish Prince” Kielczewski (10-0, 2 KOs) vs. James Lester (9-5, 4 KOs), and Gabriel Duluc (1-0, 1 KO) vs. Springfield (MA) junior welterweight Noel Garcia. Also scheduled to be in action are popular, female heavyweight Sonya “The Scholar” Lamonakis (5-0, 1 KO), fighting out of New York City, vs. Tiffany Woodard (4-4, 3 KOs); unbeaten Louisiana heavyweight prospect Kelvin Price(10-0, 6 KO) vs. Joseph Rabotte, and New Haven super bantamweight Luis “The KO King” Rosa (7-0, 5 KOs) vs. Shawn “Bones” Nichols (5-6, 5 KOs). All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets for Broadway Boxing are on sale now through DiBella Entertainment, and start at only $35. Main Floor tickets are priced at $55, $75, and $125. Rear Balcony tickets are $35 and $75. Tables for groups of 10 are priced at $1,000. Tickets can be purchased by calling DiBella Entertainment: (212) 947-2577, and more information can be obtained by visiting www.dbe1.com.

Doors open at 6 PM/ET with the first bout slated for 7 PM/ET.

AT HORSESHOE CASINO IN HAMMOND, INDIANA, ON AUG. 19;

TELEVISED LIVE ON ESPN’S “FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS”

Art Pelullo/Banner Promotions, Bobby Hitz/Hitz Boxing, Joe DeGuardia/Star Boxing, and Prizefight Promotions will present a sensational fight card on Friday, August 19, 2011, at the Horseshoe Casino, located at 777 Casino Center Drive in Hammond, Indiana. The main event, co-featured bout, and other selected fights will be televised live on ESPN2, ESPN Deportes – ESPN’s Spanish-language network – and ESPN3.com, the network’s broadband platform service. It is the final fight card of ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” 2011 season.

In the main event, scheduled for 10 rounds in the junior middleweight division, former two-time world amateur champion and 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius Andrade, 13-0 with 9 knockouts, of Providence, Rhode Island, will step up in class against his most accomplished and dangerous opponent yet as a pro – veteran Grady Brewer, 28-12 with 16 knockouts, of Lawton, Oklahoma.

Promoter Art Pelullo said, “Demetriushas practically grown up as a pro on ESPN. We think he’s the top young prospect in boxing and a future world champion, and it’s fitting that his first big test as a pro and in his first 10 rounder be on ESPN Friday Night Fights finally for 2011. Grady Brewer is a very dangerous fighter who has real ability as a puncher and the tenacity that is needed to win big fights. He proved that in his last fight when he knocked out undefeated prospect Fernando Guerrero.”

Doug Loughrey, Director for Programming & Acquisitions at ESPN said, “We are proud to have this bout as the 2011 FNF season finale main event. It will be an interesting contest as Demetrius is stepping up with Grady Brewer as an opponent. We have seen both fighters this year on our network of platforms and we are confident this televised card will continue to deliver excitement for our boxing audiences.”

Andrade, 23 years old, finished his impressive amateur career representing the United States in the 2008 Olympics. He was also a gold medalist at the 2007 World Championships in Chicago, the 2005 and 2006 U.S. National Championships, and the 2006 and 2007 National Golden Gloves Championships, among many others. A pro now for over two and a half years, he has stayed active in the ring and made good progress, and feels that he’s ready for the next level of competition.

Brewer, an 11-year pro, won the 2006 season of the reality series, “The Contender.” He has derailed the progress of up-and-coming prospects more than once – Brewer is coming off a fourth-round TKO win against previously unbeaten prospect Fernando Guerrero (21-0 at the time) in his last fight on June 17, and he TKO’d previously undefeated Anthony Thompson (15-0 at the time) in February, 2004. Brewer also has to his credit wins against current IBF junior middleweight world champion Cornelius “K9” Bundrage (W10, Nov. 2008), and former IBF junior lightweight world champion Steve Forbes (W10, Sept. 2006).

The co-featured bout, scheduled for 10 rounds in the lightweight division, could stand as a main event on its own – former WBC lightweight world champion David Diaz, 36-3-1 with 17 knockouts, of Chicago, will battle rising contender “Hammerin'” Hank Lundy, 20-1-1 with 10 knockouts, of Philadelphia.

Diaz was born and raised in Chicago, and is a local hero. A 1996 U.S. Olympian, he won the WBC title in August, 2006, and made a successful title defense against Mexican legend Erik Morales at the Allstate Arena a year later. Lundy is coming off an exciting 10-round decision win against former two-time Venezuelan Olympian Patrick Lopez in his last fight on April 1.

More exciting fights will be announced. All bouts subject to change without notice. Doors open at: 6:00 P.M. (all times Central time)

First fight at: 7:00 P.M.

Tickets prices: $90 Ringside, $40 Orchestra (main level), $30 Mezzanine (balcony). Tickets available at: www.fanfueled.comand www.thevenue-chicago.com.

World Boxing Champion John ‘The Quietman’ Ruiz Opens full-contact gym

Posted on | August 15, 2011 | No Comments

MEDFORD, Mass. (August 15, 2011) – Two-time World Boxing Association (“WBA”) heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz has opened Quietman Sports Gym, inside of Gold’s Gym in Medford (4000 Mystic Valley Parkway), which is a suburb of Boston and only a few miles from where Ruiz grew-up in Chelsea.

Quietman Sports Gym is a full-contact gym, featuring a boxing ring as well as a cage for MMA, wrestling, jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai fighting. The gym also offers boxing and full-contact fighting classes, personal and semi-private instruction, self defense classes, and white collar boxing. The gym is also available for rentals on Sundays.

Ruiz is the owner and chief boxing instructor. Other instructors include John’s brother, Eddie Ruiz, and Jose “Raul” Sanchez for boxing; Miguel Rivera, MMA/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; Michael Matulonis, kickboxing; Rich Bloom, wrestling; NiccKossivas, Muay Thai/MMA striking.

“I grew up in this area and wanted to return to my roots in order to give back to these communities,” Ruiz explained. “I’m very close to my family and friends I have back here, so this is also an opportunity for me to spend more time with them. I believe a gym like this helps communities and children. Our goal is to create a gym that develops Olympians, but also give kids a place to go, just like I had at the Somerville Boxing Club, where they stay off the streets and learn how to box, wrestle or mixed martial arts training. There are so many bad temptations today for kids and many of them really need a place to go. We want to help them develop self-esteem and character.”

Future plans call for Quietman Sports Gym to become a sanctioned USA Boxing gym. Ruiz also wants to become a boxing and MMA promoter – professional and amateur – and he has already started a boxing consulting agency, Quietman Sports, along with his longtime attorney and advisor, Boston Attorney Anthony M. Cardinale.

“I was able to see the world because of boxing and I want to help kids do the same as part of our future ‘Quietman’ traveling team,” John added. “I’ve been fortunate to have had so many memorable times through boxing and I really want to pass along those experiences and what I’ve learned.”

The 39-year-old Ruiz, who lives in Las Vegas, retired from the ring a year ago. He had a 44-9-1 (30 KOs) career record and fought in 12 world title fights.

Quitman Sports Gym offers active military personal, as well as police officers and fire fighters, discount memberships.

Hours of operations for Quietman Sports Gym are Monday-Thursday, 11 AM/ET-9 PM/ET; Friday 1 AM/ET-8 PM/ET; Saturday 9 AM/ET-2 PMN/ET (closed Sunday).

Formore information about the Quietman Sports Gym, call 781.396.6700, go online to www.JohnTheQuietmanRuiz.com  or  WWW.Quietmansports.com, or on Facebook at John Quietman Ruiz.
