Cayo 100% Healed, 100% Ready

FIGHT NIGHTS LOGO

Finishing up training for one of the most critical fights of his boxing career, the Dominican Republic’s once-beaten IBF #3-rated Victor “Mermelada” Cayo (20-1, 18 KOs) says he’s too strong and too fast to be denied a victory against Washington DC’s IBF #4-ranked Lamont Peterson.

The two will meet in a 12-Round IBF Super Lightweight Elimination bout that will serve as the main event on Friday, July 29, at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas and live on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

A devoted family man who has dedicated his entire professional life to boxing, Cayo says his lifelong dream of winning a world championship is finally in his grasp and he and the people of his beloved homeland can feel it.

After some final sparring, Cayo sat down to answer a few questions.

You will have been out of the ring nine months by fight time, the longest inactive period of your career. Will ring rust play any role in the fight?

I’ve been in camp since December of last year. I had the opportunity to fight earlier in the year, but that didn’t come about. And then I was supposed to fight in March and go injured, so I’ve been in the gym nearly the whole time. This inactivity will benefit me in the end because I had time to heal from my injury.

Are you 100% healed from your injury?

Thank god. Yes. I am 100%. I have a great therapy team and I’m ready to go.

Tell me what fighting for and winning a world championship would mean to you.

That’s a loaded question. I fight for myself and my family first, but I also fight for my country. Another world champion would be great for Dominican Republic. This is something I’ve been dreaming about all my life. I’ve dedicated my entire life to boxing.

Why are you going to win this fight? What’s your big advantage?

I’m better prepared than he is. My advantages are that I am faster stronger and smarter than him and I’m a better boxer. That’s why I will be victorious.

You came up a little short your last time on the world-class level. What’s different this time?

The difference this time is I’ve matured and learned from my mistakes. I am a better person from the loss to Maidana. Maidana was a dirty fighter. I don’t want to make excuses, but he probably hit me behind the head a hundred times. I’m past that now and I’m just a better fighter today than I was last year.

Tell me why you train in Oxnard and how your training went.

I train in Oxnard because this is my home away from home. I’ve been coming here for three years. You have to come here to be a champion. I have all my coaches here and I have a great team to help me. I also have great sparring. This is a great place and a great environment. This is where I need to be to become a world champion.

Do you get nervous before big fights?

No. I don’t get nervous. It’s more excited than anything. Once the bell rings, it goes away. I just get really excited, like I am for this fight.

Have the Dominican people reached out to wish you good luck? What would you like to say to them?

I get a lot of support from Dominican fans. They want another world champion. I appreciate the fans very much. They love me. My family and friends call me to keep my spirits up while I’m away from home. I would like to say thank you very much for supporting me.

###

Also scheduled for the July 29 fight night is a sensational 10-round light heavyweight showdown between Edison “Pantera” Miranda (34-5, 29 KOs) and Yordanis Despaigne (8-1, 4 KOs).

Topping the all-action undercard will be Miami, Florida, via Cuba’s undefeated knockout artist Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy 12-0 (10 KO’s) in an eight-round super featherweight matchup against Kansas City’s Gerardo Robles (14-9, 6 KO`s).

In a 10-round battle with a touch of international flavor, Chelyabwsk, Russia’s undefeated Sergey Kovalev (15-0, 13 KO`s) will face Nairobi, Kenya’s Douglas Otieno (23-6, 12 KO`s) for the NABA Light Heavyweight Championship.

Also featured is a six-round light heavyweight scrap between Las Vegas’ (via Sweden) Badou Jack “The Ripper” (6-0, 5 KO`s) and Athens, Georgia’s Timothy Hall Jr. (6-11, 4 KO`s); and in a four-round lightweight attraction, popular Las Vegas fighter Cameron Kreal will make his highly anticipated pro debut against fellow Las Vegas resident Franky Martinez (0-3).

In conjunction with Warriors Boxing Promotions and Blue Wave Group, “Fight Nights at The Cosmopolitan” combines the mystique and excitement of legendary Las Vegas boxing matches with a new and socially dynamic experience. Tickets are on sale now and priced at $250 for VIP tables, $150 for ringside seats, $100 for floor seats, $50 for grandstand seating and $20 for general admission tickets and are available for purchase by calling 877-551-7778 or at www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com.

Teenage Sensation Terry Holmes Back In Action July 31st

Posted on | July 25, 2011 | No Comments

Stevenage teenager Terry Holmes is set for his fourth pro outing this coming weekend, when he takes on Earl’s Court’s Bheki Moyo at the Graham Earl promoted ‘Renaissance’ event at the Liquid Nightclub in Luton.

Terry, who is just nineteen year of age, has made an impressive start to his professional boxing career, having already notched up three superb wins against very good competition, in Johnny Greaves, Danny Connor and Jason Nesbitt.

What’s more Terry didn’t just win, he won every single round to secure shutout 40-36 points victories on all three outings to date.

Following a sparring session, under the watchful eyes of Graham Earl, young Terry spoke briefly on the upcoming showdown with Bheki Moyo, “Yeah, I’m looking forward to it. Looking to build my record now so looking for another win.

I want to win well, same old thing you know, stick with my jabs, big rights and my combinations. just going to do the same things as last time, no sense in trying to knock him out, if it comes it comes and if the chance comes that’s it.

I’m just going to try and relax, use my jab and pick him off with my combinations.

I’m not trying to rush things, but I’m looking to build myself up to get in some kind run going and possible title contention in the next year or so. There’s a long way to go, I’m only nineteen so I’ve got plenty of age to go, there’s no rush.”

Terry Holmes versus Bheki Moyo will be supporting the highly anticipated rematch between Manny Oshunrinde and Jahmaine Smyle that headlines ‘Renaissance

Graham Earl has put together an exciting undercard to support Oshunrinde-Smyle II that features, besides Terry Holmes, Belfast’s big banging Joe Hillerby as well as the debuts of local lads James Smith, Danny Mulhern and Tom Little.

Tickets, priced £30, for the Graham Earl Promoted ‘Renaissance’ event at Liquid Nightclub, Gordon Street, Luton on Sunday July 31st 2011 are available on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at Graham Earl’s House of Champions Gym, Unit 11 Hitchin Road Industrial Estate, Luton, Bedfordshire, LU2 0DZ

TYSON FURY PUNCHES OUT HEAVY DUTY RATINGS

Posted on | July 25, 2011 | No Comments

London (25th July) TYSON Fury proved on Saturday night that he’s not only the new star of World boxing after winning the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles but also a major ratings puller for Channel 5.

Channel 5 executives were left thrilled by 6ft 9′ Fury’s sensational performance in the victory over Dereck Chisora at Wembley Arena which attracted a peak audience figure of 3m viewers – demonstrating once again the appeal of boxing to the public.

British and Commonwealth champion Fury is now ready to become a global star with not only Channel 5 but American broadcasters eager to screen his future fights.

Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy believes the victory over Chisora is just the start of a great journey for the 22-year-old right to the top of world boxing.

Hennessy said: “The figures for Channel 5 were fantastic and I have to give great credit to Channel 5 because they listened to me and they believed in me when I told them about Tyson, unlike other broadcasters.

“When I promoted the World title fight between Carl Froch and Jean Pascal the figures were roughy 2.9m and that was a World title on ITV with a big build-up.
This is just the start for Tyson, he’s a winner in the ring and he’s a winner with the public sitting at home wanting to see a proper fighter and a guy who has the charisma to entertain them.

“The future is looking very bright for Tyson, we want him to win the Irish title next and then the European title and Channel 5 now have the opportunity to bring those fights to an even bigger audience. Nobody in British boxing is getting this amount of people watching their fights. Towards the end of the fight it recorded the highest veiwing figures and was the most watched program on British television.”

CARL FRAMPTON TO FACE KIKO MARTINEZ ON ‘BREATHTAKING’ SEPTEMBER 10 SHOW

Posted on | July 25, 2011 | No Comments

Belfast boy gets hometown European title shot on McCloskey undercard

Carl Frampton will challenge Kiko Martinez for the European Super Bantamweight title on September 10 at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast.

The fight will be the chief support bout on the Paul McCloskey vs. Breidis Prescott WBA Light Welterweight World title eliminator, and Frampton is confident he can wrestle the title from the Spaniard in just his 11th pro contest.

“I’ve wanted this fight for a long time and I believe 100 per cent that I will beat Kiko,” said Frampton. “He’s a dangerous fighter and a World class one but I believe that I am a World class fighter too and a massive hometown show is the perfect platform for me to prove it.

“It’s going to be a great occasion and I’m so excited to be fighting at the Odyssey Arena. I’m sure it will be a sell-out and the support I’ll get will push me even harder against a top quality opponent.”

Martinez won the European title in April with a tenth round knockout of Jason Booth in Madrid, the third time he has held the belt that he first won with a stunning first round stoppage over Bernard Dunne in Dublin.

Frampton’s manager Barry McGuigan admitted that Martinez represents a step up in quality for his hot prospect, but believes his 24 year-old charge will respond with his best performance since joining the pro ranks in June 2009.

“There are risks attached to any fight you take but we’re confident and convinced that Carl will beat Kiko,” said McGuigan. “Kiko is a World class operator who can box, punch and take a shot and we’ve got great respect for him coming to Belfast to defend his title. He’s fought in hostile territory before and come out on top, but I firmly believe that Carl will take his title.

“It’s a massive occasion for Carl as a Belfast boy and it’s going to be a fabulous night. You have two breathtaking big fights that are going to be great to watch so it’s a hot ticket and everyone going will be in for a treat.”

Tickets for Paul McCloskey vs. Breidis Prescott plus a full championship undercard led by Carl Frampton vs. Kiko Martinez are on sale now priced at £30-£200 (tickets may be subject to service charge) and available from the Odyssey Arena Box Office on 02890 73 9074, Ticketmaster 0844 277 4455 (24 hour). Tickets are also available in person from the Odyssey Arena Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, and online from www.ticketmaster.ie.
