British Title Shot Is A Golden Opportunity For Me Says Murphy

Posted on | December 8, 2011 | No Comments

Just thirteen days ago Ben Murphy successfully defended his BBBofC Southern Area Lightweight Title, with a magnificent fourth round stoppage of Tony Owen at the Coronet Theatre in Southwark, London.

This coming Saturday the tough, pit bull like, thirty one year old from Hove will move up a weight division to challenge Ashley Theophane for his British Light Welterweight title at the Frank Maloney Promotions event at the Peterlee Leisure Centre.

Murphy got what he describes as a ‘Golden Opportunity’  following the proposed opponent, Nigel Wright, being forced to step aside on medical grounds.

Following a training session, under the watchful eyes of his coach Johnny Eames at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, an elated Murphy spoke briefly on his unexpected shot at the British title, “I keep pinching myself and asking myself is it real, you know.

Yeah I know it’s not even two weeks ago I fought Tony Owen, so this may seem too soon to some, but it didn’t go the distance, it was a fourth round stoppage.

Tony’s pretty decent, a good boxer, but I bullied him really, I bullied my way in and stretched him.

I knew that was going to happen. I may have been able to out box him as well, but I just knew I was going to take him out and finish the job. I just didn’t want to wait around, so got it done quick and kept my Southern Area title.

It’s good I done the job so quickly because now I’ve got a shot at a British title against Ashley (Theophane) on Saturday.

I still can’t believe it’s happening. Johnny (Eames) called me up on Tuesday and said do you want to take the fight.

Yeah, I jumped at the chance, it’s a golden opportunity for me to come out and prove to people what I can do.

I don’t know Ashley personally, I know he used to train here at the TKO, I’ve seen him fight and seen him spar so I’ve seen a little of him.

He’s a decent fighter, you can’t take that away from him, that’s why I’m so excited for this opportunity.

If I go in there and do this job – I’m so positive, I can see visions of me winning this fight you know. There’s no negatives in my mind about this fight, it’s all positive visions coming to me – I see the British title coming back with me.

When I do that I’m rolling from there and I’m looking forward to it.”

Ashley Theophane versus Ben Murphy, for the British Light Welterweight title, headlines the Frank Maloney Promotions event at Peterlee Leisure Centre, Peterlee, Tyne and Wear on Saturday 10th December 2011, and broadcast live and exclusive on Sky Sports HD1.

DC-AREA FAVORITES ANTHONY PETERSON AND FERNANDO GUERRERO AND UNDEFEATED PROSPECT JAMIE KAVANAGH TO SEE ACTION ON “CAPITAL SHOWDOWN: KHAN VS. PETERSON” UNDERCARD THIS SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE WALTER E. WASHINGTON CONVENTION CENTER

Posted on | December 7, 2011 | No Comments

WASHINGTON, DC (December 7) – “Capital Showdown: Khan vs. Peterson” fight week is in full swing and big-time boxing’s return to the District just got bigger as Golden Boy Promotions and Khan Promotions present an undercard jam-packed with compelling matchups in the lead-up to the WBA and IBF Super Lightweight World Title fight between champion Amir “King” Khan and challenger Lamont Peterson this Saturday, December 10 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.

Hometown favorite and lightweight contender Anthony Peterson, popular local standout Fernando Guerrero and unbeaten Irish prospect Jamie “The Nuisance” Kavanagh are ready for action as they prepare to show DC what they are made of on Saturday night.

The brother of main event challenger Lamont Peterson, lightweight Anthony Peterson(30-1, 20 KO’s) is forging his own path to a world title, and his bout on December 10 is a step in the right direction. A former NABF and NABO champion whose only pro loss came via disqualification to Brandon Rios in his last fight in September of 2010, the 26-year old Washington, DC native’s long-awaited return to the ring will come in his backyard against the always tough 34-year-old Ghana native Daniel Attah (26-8-1, 9 KO’s). Attah, a rugged warrior who has faced the best the game has to offer including former World Champions Acelino Freitas and Nate Campbell as well as current World Champion Antonio DeMarco, is always ready for battle and will look to spoil Peterson’s ring return on Saturday night.

Hailing from nearby Salisbury, Maryland, 25-year old Fernando Guerrero (21-1, 16 KO’s) is one of the east coast’s most popular fighters and for good reason considering his charisma outside of the ring and his action-packed style inside of it. Looking to bounce back from the lone loss of his pro career to Grady Brewer in June, Guerrero squares off with Minnesota’s Robert Kliewer (11-13-2, 5 KO’s) in an eight-round middleweight bout.

Unbeaten in eight pro fights, Ireland’s Jamie “The Nuisance” Kavanagh (8-0, 3 KO’s) has had a busy 2011, winning all four of his bouts this year without losing a round. Now fighting out of Hollywood, Calif., the 21-year-old Freddie Roach trained lightweight will take on San Juan, Puerto Rico’s Ramesis Gil (6-3-4, 5 KO’s) in a six-round contest.

Plus, Washington, DC fighters will take the stage on the biggest night of their pro careers to date when Fort Washington, Maryland light heavyweight Thomas Williams (5-0, 3 KO’s) faces Reynaldo Rodriguez (6-2-1, 3 KO’s) of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, welterweightsDusty Harrison (2-0) and Terrell Davis (0-4) face-off in an all-DC match-up, White Plains, Maryland lightweight Joshua Davis (1-0, 1 KO) takes on Chris Russell (2-7-1, 1 KO) of Shattuck, Oklahoma in a lightweight battle and White Plains lightweight Terron Grant (1-0) faces North Carolina’s Dashawn Autry (0-1). Each of these exciting bouts featuring hometown up-and-comers are scheduled for four rounds and are sure to start “Capital Showdown: Khan vs. Peterson” off right.

The Maximum Fighting Championship’s arduous search for a fitting opponent to take on Dhiego “Maluco” Lima at MFC 32: Bitter Rivals has come to fruition.

Stepping up to battle the undefeated welterweight prospect Lima (6-0) is judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Bruno “BC” Carvalho, who has signed a multi-fight deal with the MFC. Carvalho (13-5), who was born in Brazil and now splits his home base between Sweden and the United States, has won eight of his last nine fights, and will be Lima’s toughest test to date when they square-off on main card of the HDNet Fights broadcast emanating live from the Mayfield Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, on Friday, January 27.

The HDNet broadcast, with Michael Schiavello and Frank Trigg handling the commentary, begins at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT (check local listings for channel designation).
