Team Gunn Launches Premier Bare Knuckle Boxing Website

Posted on | December 7, 2011 | No Comments

Team Gunn recently announced the launching of their new website—www.wbkba.com—to spread awareness of bare knuckle boxing and connect fans around the world.

The mission of the WBKBA—World Bare Knuckle Boxing Association—is to provide BKB fans around the world with the latest news and updates about everything related to bare knuckle boxing.

“We are the Bare knuckle bible; we are the first website of its kind,” said World Heavyweight Bare Knuckle Boxing Champion Bobby Gunn.  “We want to pay homage to the legendary John L. Sullivan and keep the sport clean and free of the corruption and politics surrounding other combat sports.”

Since Gunn defeated Richard Stewart in August of this year to claim Sullivan’s vacant linear title, bare knuckle boxing has rapidly grown in popularity throughout the fight world.

“Bare knuckle boxing combines the skills and techniques fighters need to excel in the boxing ring with the excitement of the standup aspect of a MMA fight,” said Chris Cella, co-founder of WBKBA.  “Bobby Gunn displayed what an art BKB is in his recent title defense against Ernest Jackson.”

In the fight against Jackson, Gunn showed poise and patience as he slowly picked apart his opponent on his way to winning via knockout.

“Bare knuckle boxing is not a street fight or an alley fight between two bums,” said Gunn.  “It is a strategic fight that needs to be fought smart, like a game of chess.  You have to be as mentally sharp as you do physically.”

Team Gunn was adamant about creating the WBKBA to create a foundation for everything related to bare knuckle boxing.

“Going forward, the only way we are going to take off with the WBKBA is to offer legit, sanctioned fights to give fighters around the world a chance to shine,” said Gunn.  “I have participated in over 70 BKB fights, but none of them meant anything until my sanctioned bout against Stewart this past summer.”

At WBKBA.com fight fans can learn about upcoming fights, connect with their favorite BKB fighters, and get all of the latest BKB news, videos and interviews.

Join the conversation on Facebook, and for more information on the World Bare Knuckle Boxing Association visit www.wbkba.com.

FRAMPTON FACES HUGHES IN NEW YEAR COMMONWEALTH DEFENCE

Posted on | December 7, 2011 | No Comments

The Jackal takes on Scotsman at York Hall on January 28

Carl Frampton will make the first defence of his Commonwealth Super Bantamweight title against Kris Hughes on January 28 at York Hall, Bethnal Green live on Sky Sports.

Frampton claimed the vacant title in September with a commanding fourth round stoppage against Mark Quon at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, stretching his unbeaten record to 11 fights, and fights in London for the second time in his career.

Former World Featherweight champion Barry McGuigan continues to guide the career of the 24 year-old Belfast boy, and the Clones Cyclone is predicting that his charge could add more titles to his Commonwealth belt by the end of 2012.

“It’s a big year for us – we’re not looking past Kris but I believe Carl can go a long way, and by the end of 2012 I would like to think he would be European Champion,” said McGuigan. “(British Champion) Scott Quigg is a target fight down the line too and he’s enthusiastic for the fight so there’s exciting things ahead, but Kris comes first and Carl will be ready.”

For Scotsman Hughes, also 24, it’s a second crack at the title after a narrow decision loss to Jamie Arthur last October in east London. The Scottish Area Featherweight champion will look to go one better this time round, and McGuigan is looking forward to seeing Frampton face a tough challenge in London.

“He’s a tall rangy guy who gave Jamie Arthur a real work out, he’s got experience and he is a Southpaw so it’s a different type of fight and challenge for Carl and I’m looking forward to it,” said McGuigan.

“We’re looking forward to fighting in the York Hall again – it’s just like the Ulster Hall really so it’s a home away from home for Carl, every bit as atmospheric and we will be bringing a lot of fans over.

“There’s a huge underground movement of excitement and support for Carl from boxing fans all over the place who are talking about him so it’s good to get him fighting in new places. I’m sure that there will be three or four-hundred fans from here going over and a large number in London who will be looking forward to seeing Carl in the flesh for the first time.”

It will be Matchroom Sport’s first boxing show of 2012 and promoter Eddie Hearn says he is thrilled to be starting with Frampton’s first Commonwealth title defence, promptly followed by the first Prizefighter of the year on February 11 at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton with the Light Welterweights II.

“I’m delighted to be kicking off the New Year with one of Boxing’s most exciting prospects in Carl Frampton,” said Eddie Hearn. “There are some big fights out there for Carl in 2012 and I know he will be looking to make a statement on January 28. We will be putting together a jam packed undercard led by our rising middleweight star John Ryder, who will be looking to extend his unbeaten run ahead of a promising year.”

Tickets for Carl Frampton vs. Kris Hughes for the Commonwealth Super Bantamweight title plus full championship undercard led by John Ryder are on sale now from Matchroom Sport priced £35 unreserved, £60 ringside and £100 VIP – to book call 01277 359900 or visit www.matchroomboxing.com

Tough Test For Freddie Turner – Faces Kevin McCauley on Dec 14th

Tough Test For Freddie Turner – Faces Kevin McCauley on Dec 14th

On Wednesday 14th December Canning Town’s exciting unbeaten Welterweight prospect Freddie Turner will be making the short journey to the York Hall in Bethnal Green, where he is set to face Birmingham’s Kevin McCauley.

With just four pro bouts under his belt, all won by shutout 40-36 points margin, young Freddie will surely be facing the toughest fight of his fledgling career to date, as McCauley is not just more experienced but also the reigning British Masters Light Middleweight Champion.

Saying that Freddie is more than confident that he will win through on the night, having said earlier, “Yes, just found out it’ll be Kevin McCauley I’ll be fighting on the 14th.

He’s a tough kid who loves to come forward. He’s no walk over, I mean he went to Scotland and beat Craig Windsor Jnr. in his own back yard to win the British Masters title last month. I think that says all that needs to be said about him.

That doesn’t bother me though, I never mind who I fight, I believe in my talent and ability and hopefully it’ll all come together on the night.

I’ve been training hard, all’s well and looking good. I live clean and train hard, nothing can stop me now really.

I’m with the best training team, Jimmy and Mark Tibbs, in the country at the minute and they’re producing great champions.

I’m in a great, great stable, again the best in the UK – The TRAD TKO. There’s always plenty of great sparring, it’s really good and I really enjoy it here.

All’s really well and I can’t wait for the 14th, he’s gonna get smashed.”

Freddie Turner, against Kevin McCauley, features on the Francis and George Warren’s Queensberry promotions event, headlined by the British and Commonwealth Featherweight title clash between Lee Selby and John Simpson. takes place at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, and broadcast live on Sky Sports, on Wednesday the 14th December 2011.

Tickets, priced £60 (Ringside) and £40 (Standard Seated), are available now on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or from the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA

Mendy Defends Against Madni

Posted on | December 7, 2011 | No Comments

World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental Light Welterweight Champion Yvan Mendy, 22-2-1 (11), will make the second defense of his championship on December 16, taking on Belgian Challenger Tarik Madni at the Salle Marcel Cerdan in Thourotte, France.
Having won the WBF title in June 2010 with a dominating performance against tough Britt Peter McDonagh, 26-year-old Mendy successfully defended against Ugandan 2004 Olympian, and former African Champion, Sam Rukundo last December.
Since then he has been plagued by some bad luck, drawing with and losing a close decision to Abdoulaye Soukouna in French national title bouts. Soukouane also holds a 2008 victory over Mendy, thus being the only man to blemish his countryman’s record.
In November Mendy returned with a victory in a non title fight against Serbian Mladen Zivkov, and he is reportedly determined on putting the Soukouane-disappointments behind him and focused on achieving greater things in the future.
Tarik Madni, 15-2 (0), is somewhat in the same situation as his opponent on the 16th. After winning his first fourteen bouts, the Belgian suffered two straight setbacks, albeit against formidable opposition, and is now going for redemption after scoring a tune-up victory in November.
Both losses on Madni’s record came in Ukraine. Last year he dropped a decision to Volodymyr Kravets (22-0) for the IBC title, and this past summer he lost a ten-rounder against Viktor Postol (13-0). While not carrying much of a punch himself, Madni proved against these hard-hitters that there is nothing wrong with his chin and durability.
No shame in losing to top-notch opponents such as Kravets and Postol, and Madni got back to winning ways in January by defeating former Georgian champion Khakhaber Avetisian. But at 36 years of age, he has limited time to fulfill his potential and capture a professional title. With that in mind, Madni is bound to give it his best shot against Mendy.

Williams And Conquest Face To Face On The Fight Show This Thursday

Posted on | December 7, 2011 | 1 Comment

This Thursday evening British Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams and Tony ‘Conqueror’ Conquest, who will be challenging him for his crown at York Hall in London on the 13th January, will be taking a little time out from their big fight preparations to be studio guests on The Fight Show, presented by Dom McGuinness, on Sports Tonight (Freeview HD Channel 112 and available worldwide on-line at www.sportstonightlive.com) from 5.30pm (GMT)

Leon, Tony and Dom will be discussing all the latest boxing news, upcoming fights and of course the BIG ONE, the most defining British Cruiserweight battle in recent history, when the man himself, Leon Williams, defends his coveted Lonsdale belt against Tony Conquest in what can be best described as the ‘Battle of Britain’.

Between them Leon and Tony have breathed life into the often overlooked division, with their all action, yet highly contrasting, styles – Leon being a big punching close quarters battler, right out of the ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson mould, whilst Tony’s quick handed slick boxing style is more akin to that of two time Cruiserweight Champion of the World Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham – ensures a true Battle Royale come the 13th January.

There’s much more to this fight though, which has caused both Leon and Tony a bit of a dilemma, as after their first fight, back in their Amateur days, the pair became close friends and have remained so until this day.

On Thursday you can be sure that one of the topics being discussed is how they intend to go about separating their friendship from the serious business of big time Championship boxing.

The Fight Show, hosted by Dom McGuinness and featuring British Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams and title challenger Tony ‘Conqueror’ Conquest, is broadcast live on Sports Tonight (Freeview HD Channel 112 and available worldwide on-line at www.sportstonightlive.com) from 5.30pm (GMT).

Leon ‘Solid’ Williams Versus Tony ‘Conqueror’ Conquest for the British Cruiserweight title headlines Francis and George Warren’s Queensberry Promotions first event of the New Year, which takes place at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, on Friday 13th January 2012 and broadcast live on BoxNation (Sky platform Channel 456 & Virgin 546)

Tickets, priced £40 (Standard Seated) and £60 (Ringside) for Williams vs. Conquest are available now on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com. Tickets are also available direct from the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA.
