FLOYD MAYWEATHER: LEGACY OR MONEY

Floyd Mayweather: Legacy Or Money?

By Matt Yanofsky

Following his impressive tenth round stoppage over previously undefeated Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton, Floyd Mayweather once again told the boxing world of his plans to retire. Mayweather claimed he would take at least two years off and would only return after that if there is a huge money fight. Unless Floyd is once again pulling one over our eyes (like he did with his brief retirement after his victory over Oscar De La Hoya), he is making a big mistake.

Boxing lifer and former world title challenger John “Iceman” Scully offered up his opinion on Mayweather’s situation. “One thing that needs to be understood is that there is so much money involved with big fights involving a guy like Mayweather. It often isn’t as simple as to where he could just say, “OK, I want to fight so and so and that’s it because there are people who have money and time invested as well and they have a say, too,” claimed Scully.

“Back when I was an amateur, I trained with Sugar Ray Leonard before he fought Donny Lalonde, and I learned a lot. On my own I learned that at a certain level, when you’ve reached a certain position and level, it is sometimes a thing where you seriously have to weight the risk versus the reward factor.”

In regards to his fight with Tommy Hearns back in 1981, he said that he knew he could have fought Tommy earlier than he did. They could have fought in 1980 and it would have still been a very viable fight but he knew for a fight with potential like that, he had to wait “until grandmothers came to him on the street and asked him when he was going to fight Tommy Hearns,” When that scenario started happening he knew it was time to get the maximum out of the fight in terms of both exposure and money. “So basically, at the level of a Floyd Mayweather is at, despite what many say to the contrary, I for one don’t believe fear of any man comes into the equation when he makes moves in regard to his career now. Its business all the way,” claims the always colorful Scully.

This is an interesting view point from a man I have the world of respect for, but it is like comparing apples to oranges. Sugar Ray Leonard fought everyone out there and Mayweather has not even come close. Leonard?s list of opponents includes legends, Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, Wilfred Benitez, and Hector Camacho among others. The only “all time legends” Mayweather has faced are Oscar De La Hoya and the late Diego Corrales.

In addition to unifying his titles at welterweight and attempting to at super middleweight (fighting to a draw with Thomas Hearns), Leonard’s victory over the then unbeatable Hagler is far and above anything Mayweather has accomplished. Aside from never unifying his titles, Mayweather defeated an old Oscar De La Hoya, a weight drained Corrales, and a Ricky Hatton who showed he did not belong at welterweight by previously struggling to a controversial decision victory over B level champion Luis Collazo.

Even as the undisputed number one pound for pound fighter and one of the best over the last 25 years, Mayweather has a lot left to prove. The self proclaimed “greatest of all time” is the linear champion of the best division in the sport. There are still many names left to tangle with. Miguel Cotto, the WBA champion is the biggest fight out there and Floyd somewhat avoided the idea of fighting Cotto in the near future. Mayweather would make a substantial amount of money in that fight and there is a good chance he would beat Cotto similarly to the way he did Hatton. A win, which would make him a unified champion and once again put him victorious over a previously undefeated fighter, would only further secure his excellent career.

The problem may be that “Money Mayweather’s” head has grown too big for his own good. If he really cared about his legacy, he would realize that he may never again make as much money as he did against De La Hoya and Hatton and accept it. Mayweather will undoubtedly realize that he can earn a substantial amount of money against anyone.

Aside from Cotto, Floyd needs to prove to the world that he can defeat “risky” fighters in the welterweight division. An example of this is Joshua Clottey, who is not the most well known to the general fans, but boxing pundits know will give a tough fight to anyone. WBO champion Paul Williams who has a growing popularity after dethroning a man Floyd Mayweather dodged by the name of Antonio Margarito would also have a good chance of beating him.

Mayweather will claim “nobody knows Paul Williams and he hasn’t beaten anyone besides Margarito” but deep down inside this may not be the reason he won’t fight him. In reality, Mayweather has never faced a fighter like Williams who aside from being a volume punching southpaw, has a 5 inch height and 10 inch reach advantage. This undoubtedly gives him the best chance among anyone of beating Mayweather.

These fights may never happen because opponents such as Williams and Clottey might be deemed as “bringing nothing to the table” but top fighters did not always have the attitude of Mayweather. In the 1980’s Marvin Hagler was the best fighter in the universe, having defeated the legends Thomas Hearns, and Roberto Duran as well as world champions Vito Antuofermo and Alan Minter On March 16th 1986, Hagler challenged John Mugabi who at the time was 26-0 with all knockouts.

Hagler could have easily side stepped the bout in a similar way Mayweather would with Clottey or Williams. Hagler instead elected to prove his greatness by taking the fight, and overcoming some tough moments en route to an 11th round stoppage of the knockout king known as “The Beast.” This is an example of something a fighter who will always remain above Mayweather on an all time scale is willing to do. Hagler was not only great because of his toughness and incredible chin, but also due to his willingness to take risky fights and until Mayweather does so, expect his all time status to be questioned.

EUROPEAN BOXING NEWS

Posted on | December 16, 2007 | No Comments

December 14, Rome, Italy: Danish cruiser Johny Jensen, a huge underdog, won the EBU title with a second round stoppage of Italian Vincenczo Cantarore in front of perhaps 7000 fans at the huge Palalomattico. Both men started slowly, Jensen scored with a good left jab to the body but from then on – up until the end that is – the fight belonged to Cantatore. Jensen, hands high, blocked some of the punches but the champion gained confidence as the challenger seemed fall apart mentally. In the second it was more of the same. Both men missed, Jensen tried to work the body but was shaken by a left-right-left hook combination. Jensen retreated, the crowd cheered, the confident champion had a killer look in his eyes but then walked into a right hand and was hurt. With hindsight it should have been stopped right then and there but as it was Candatory tried to punch, wobbled, Jensen – as surprised as anyone else – scored again and the Italian began to slide against the ropes. The Dane landed again, and again, with British referee Ian John Lewis watching. Cantatore finally went down with Jensen landing with a final punch with the champion on the floor. If ten and out actually was tolled I couldn?t tell but to me it seemed as if it was stopped. Time given as 1.12. The Danes began to cheer with the crowd partly in an uproar, some felt it was stopped too soon, others blamed the punch when Cantatore was already floored, and one spectator seemed to blame “cosa nostra” involvement. But to this observer it seemed as if Jensen, a decent puncher, caught an aging fighter on the right spot at the right time. Once Cantatore realized he had been stopped he tried to resume fighting but was on very shaky legs and it took several minutes before he was back in the real world.

Jr middle Emanuele Della Rosa stopped Belgian Hicham Nafil in the sixth after a foul filled contest where Della Rosa, got away with a lot of things that should have seen him dq:d elsewhere but in Italy. As it was Nafil had to retire due to a shoulder injury caused by Della Rosa?s wrestling tacticts.

Danish heavy Claus Bertino opened the show and walked through Bulgarian Anton Simeonov for a second round tko win.

News:
The undercard to Cunningham vs Huck in Bielefeld December 29 shapes up very interestingly: Jose Alfaro and Prawet Singchawa will indeed fight for the vacant WBA lightweight title in this German town with Don King Promotions and Sauerland Event joining forces. Polish cruiser Tomasz Adamek is also on for the show and take on Tiwon Taylor. At heavyweight Francesco Pianeta will again face tough Italian Paolo Ferrara. The records show a split win for Pianeta the first time around but most neutral observers at ringside had Ferrara well ahead.

Francois Botha is off the fight against Odlanier Solis December 23 in Halle / Saale with Julius Long replacing him. Herbie Hide will fight Russian Mihaly Nasyrov for the vacant WBC Int’l cruiserweight title.

Former multiple lightheavy and cruiser champ Fabrize Tiozzo have announced plans for a comeback. No concrete plans have been announced, Tiozzo is freelance and open for offers.

Ulf Steinforth’s SES have made public a 750 000 USD for Laila Ali to face Natascha Ragosina, who come December 15 is likely to hold five world titles at supermiddle.

Newly crowned ABU lightweight champ Sam Rukundo lands at number fifteen in the latest WBC ratings. Rukundo, who like opponent Robert Osiobe weighed inside 135 lbs November 24 in Gilleleje, also won the UBO bauble that night – but not at lightweight. UBO insists Rukundo is their jr welter champ and have sanctioned Abdu Tebazalwa to fight for its still vacant lightweight “universal” title December 22 in Kampala, Uganda.

Mehdi Amar vs Pierre Moreno and Kamel Belagchemi vs Hassan N’Dam fight in the first eliminators in the French version of the Contender January 24 at Cirque d’ Hiver in Paris.

EBU supermiddle champ Cristian Sanavia and Danilo Haussler will do it again at a date to be announced. The two drew controversially in Basle December 8. Sauerland Event promotes both.

Stefan Raaff and Rene Hubner fight tonight for the vacant GBC cruiser title in Cologne. Ex-pro Mario Guedes and his P4Pound Promotion stage the show.

TRISTAN YUNKER SHARES HIS THOUGHTS

Posted on | December 15, 2007 | No Comments

Where to begin? Well, I guess I?ll start by giving you my thoughts on my last fight with Rob Kimmons. On September 21, in Las Vegas, NV, I took on Mr. Kimmons for the International Fighting Organization?s vacant welterweight championship. As many of you may or may not already know, that bout turned out to be unsuccessful for me. All I can say is that I definitely underestimated Rob and his abilities. He is definitely a great up & comer with a bright future ahead of him. I also feel as though I tried to rush things and was looking to finish the fight as quickly as possible, so I made some stupid mistakes that are uncharacteristic of my fighting style. All the aforementioned, along with probably a little karma coming back to bite me from all the pre-fight hype, ultimately led to my demise.

But alas, a new day has dawned, and a new fight is on the horizon. I will now be fighting on December 15, in Dallas, TX, against 7x UFC veteran, Pete ?The Secret Weapon? Spratt, as a feature bout on the HDNet Fights 2 event headlined by Jason ?Mayhem? Miller vs. Tim Kennedy. I think Pete is definitely an awesome striker, but I am planning to utilize my wrestling and top game to take him out of his element and putting him where I am most comfortable. Hopefully this will be the win that I need in order to get a long term deal with a little bit of job security.

Also, incase many of you haven?t already figured it out?I am now officially a welterweight. I?ve recently hit somewhat of a growth spurt (at least that?s what I call it??growth spurt? just sounds so much better than saying I?ve gotten fat) and I?ve decided that I don?t think I will be able to make the 155 lb weight limit anymore. It?s going to be a rough transition, but I think with the added size I will now be able to compete at 170 much better than I have previously faired.

And before I go, I would like to thank all my sponsors and everyone who helped out with my last fight. Thanks to Scientific Street Fighting for the gear, Sport Kilt & ScientificWrestling.com for covering my medicals, and of course UnlimitedFightNews.com, TheMMADigest.com, & MMAJunkie.com for any prefight coverage that the great people at these sites have provided. I guess this is goodbye for now. Hopefully everyone will tune in to HDNet on December 15 to watch me take on Pete Spratt.
